Cool Dave. I was able to see them (Firefox 2) but there was a lot of pixelation. Great new feature - look forward to the 'library'!
Gardening videos
Dave....Maybe you have a future in Info-mercials too...so much talent!
Just practice this phrase: ".....but first...." LOL
I loved the videos...and they came through nicely for me...and I use IE. Jo
Great new feature! Can't wait to see more! Everything worked perfectly.
Sounds good but I only see the upper left hand corner of the video :(
I'm using IE6 here at work.
This is great feedback; thank you! I'm going to play around with this tomorrow and see if I can see some of these errors on my windows based laptop (I can check it with both IE6 and IE7)
I'll also look at the pixelation. There's a balance between quality and download size and we need to find the right balance...
dave
Too bad the world at large doesn't use DivX. ;)
Next week HD videos? Then 3D? Loved the spiking of the tomato. Be careful if you do a video with baby chicks.
Yes that's Dave in the videos. :)
Yes, that was a store bought tomato. :) These videos were shot months ago- way before ours had come in.
Victor- the baby chicks were safely in the coop for the shoot :) Oh, and yes, that was a one-take deal. We just hoped for the best with it. If the chickens HAD known what was coming, they never would have left Dave alone until he actually slammed it into the ground! They would have attacked him :)
There really weren't any bloopers or out-takes. All of the videos took about 7 hours or so- all in one day. It was Dave and one camera guy, so Dave had to do the same 'script' several times per video to get the multiple camera angles.
A bit pixelated, but not that bad. I enjoyed each and every tutorial, thanks. This is a great new feature.
Trish, when do we see you guys together??
Love the videos! Dave--a future in Hollywood maybe?
I have IE6 and I'm having the same problem as everyone else, you can watch one video but then when you go to watch a 2nd one it just shows up in the corner. I never upgraded to IE7 because of all the bugs in it, but this one is showing up in version 6 as well. It's fine in Firefox though.
I booted up my laptop and I saw the same bug. This means I'll be able to fix it. :)
By the way, I found that if the bug strikes, just hit the reload button and it should straighten itself out....
dave
Yep, that works!
You are right - refresh works great - love the tree video too!
Hmmm...I tried refresh and shift-refresh (IE6) and it still shows up in the corner. Not really a big deal though, more inspiration to switch to Firefox! I'm not quite sure why I still use IE anyway, guess old habits die hard!
Dave, most excellent, just the other day I was talking w/darius on the phone and we wondered when we would be able to get weezingreens or kisska to put up some video of the northern lights! Looks like it will be soon if we can talk them into it (or I am gonna have to buy my sister up in Alaska a subscription) (I need to put that on my list anyways).
Anyhow - thanks for another great feature to the site. We really do appreciate it.
I'm glad everyone likes it. :) Please do send me some videos! I know everyone doesn't have a camcorder, but anyone who does, please do send me some stuff. It'll be fun.
Also, someone wrote something above that gave me an idea: what if we collected the top 10 or so questions that people would ask me in person, and then when we get the questions together Trish interviews me and I answer the questions on video...
dave
Dave
Thank you so much for this new addition of Videos, actually I was mad for how to make compost and got lots of informations from Pirl , today she mailed about this new section.I think my problem is resolved now. Wonderful and fantastic Idea. Thank you..............
Kaleem
The paper pots played fine but the tomatoes only stayed in a little picture in the left hand corner I could hear it fine just could not really see anything. Deanna
Sorry Dave but the only short videos I have are of my grandson eating grandpa's ice cream and my dog running at the park. Nothing garden related which is what I assume is what you are looking for.
I really like the idea of instructional and demonstration videos for this site though. They would be helpful on some of the craft and art forums like making hypertufa troughs, yard art projects etc...

Dave,
Yesterday sometime between 5pm and 8pm I watched part of the paper pots video and it was great this morning when I returned to view it again I now only get a small section (upper left hand corner) of the video. kt
Runktun, I had the same but it helps when hitting the reload button.
Thanks bonitin, I feel very foolish but when you say reload button are you refering to my refresh button on my browser? I did hit that with no change. kt
The reload button (I borrowed the term from Dave in the above post) is the same as the refresh or renewal button.
Strange it doesn't work for you though.
Don't feel foolish runktrun, I'm not any better with computer stuff.
It doesn't work for me either :)
Above Dave says he has got the same on his laptop, so should be able to fix it.
Yes, definitely it's a bug that I'm going to work on today.
dave
I made a change to the videos system just now. With the new change in place, I was no longer able to create the error that we all saw. So could ya'll check them out again and let me know?
dave
i watched the mator one-cute! ;)
Dave....It's working fine for me....I flipped through all of them and they showed very nicely....
How do we send you our video's? Through Contact Us?
A new subscriber here in town has the neatest video of baby owls....I asked her to send them to you. She has put them on U-Tube.......for those that are interested see: Southwest Gardening....Look what I found in my attic. Jo
It's working fine for me now. (IE6)
I'm glad it's working!
roadrunner: I want to keep the videos related to gardening and the site. We'll one day have a website devoted specifically to animals and the baby owls video will be perfect for that site.
best,
dave
Report:
1rst video (paper pots) works but still has the sudden interruptions.
2nd (weeds) works fine
3rd (compost) gets stuck on the entering image
4rth (tomatoes) works fine
5th (raised beds) works fine
6th (trees and shrubs) doesn't work
7th (bulbs) doesn't work.
With the ones that work fine, I no longer have to use the reload button.
OK Dave.....Jo
I use IE and had no problems whatsoever, all played fine. If we send you a video, do we send it right to your name/dmail? Or to this thread. Maybe you already said, but I'm too lazy to go back and read all the posts.
meezersfive, if you have a video, dmail me to let me know about it and I'll give instructions on how to send it in.
Eventually I'll have the process streamlined with an "Upload a video" form so you don't even have to go through me.
dave
Thanks, I tried one with my Kodak Easyshare, but there was too much shade, so I'll try it again this afternoon when it's brighter on the deck.
I have both Firefox and IE (Ver. 7) on my computer. (My kids can't access their on-line classes using Foxfire, so we have both loaded.) I don't know if having both on the system at the same time means I have true versions of each, but I ran the DG videos using each one and both of them worked just fine for me.
Great new option! If a photo is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a million or more! :-) Love your instructional videos, Dave! I do expect you to have your own gardening show next on cable TV! :-)
I may have missed this in one of the posts above, but for anyone that has video for you to try using, how and where do we upload it to you? And what kind of videos are you looking for right now? Just gardening videos, instructional videos ???? (What specifically?)
Very cool new tool for everyone to use here on DG! And your instructional videos are awesome! I hope we get to see more! That's exactly the kind of information I need to see since I am relatively new to gardening. Thank you for adding this GREAT feature to DG! :-) :-) :-)
~Becky~
Becky,
If you have a video, for now just dmail me to let me know about it and I'll give instructions on how to send it in.
Eventually I'll have the process streamlined with an "Upload a video" form so you don't even have to go through me. We're looking for any gardening-related videos. Instructional makes the most sense but I'm confident there are other uses for video, too.
dave
They all work fine for me now, thanks very much Dave!
Dave, will there be some time limit on these video submissions? Will they be available to all before any pre-screening by you guys? Will there be video ads at some point? Thanks.
