The Best Thing/Worse Thing and What did I learn Today..Pt 9

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Betty, you have given me my laugh for the day! Thank you very much!!!! Great story!! I can only imagine what the conversations were like when you got off the bus!!! LOL

Pacifica, CA

betty,
absoultly enjoyed the story

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

betty - that was one funny story.

murmur - bet the guys you partied with aren't glad you left those days behind. LOL

OMG..what a storm we had last night, not sure that I slept much more than an hour...Sailor is frantic..cries, hides, tries to get in bed with me...it was thundering/lightning, hail as large as golf balls, high winds..so shortly I'll take a walk in the gardens and see if any damage has occurred..

But as always my thoughts go to you all as I start my day..you are such encouraging, supportive individuals and I've come to care for each and everyone of you, so I make a point of checking the thread to make sure you ok...hope that the storm passed you by (or not for those of you who are in so much need of rain)...as long as you are safe! Glad you enjoyed the story...was fun recalling the memories...

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

too funny......

gosh your all great!

looking forward to getting back into a creative flow. betty thanks for your encouragement on the prayer thread.. very much appreciated.

Bes thing? Lost 9lb 3oz this week!! couldnt believe it when i saw the scales, kept checking in case something i needed had fallen off!!! lol

worst thing? had a disagreement with hubby, not talking and i hate that but i m tired of being the one to go to him. i know its probably pride but im frustrated and cant seem to get past it. help me to find the grace that i so often ask for..... sigh.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning Laura, trying to fill in the last 1/2 hr. before I leave for work..talk about being organized this a.m. - no damage outside, lots of branches/leaves etc. but that's minor compared to what many received.. they will confirm today if tornado did hit not far from here! Darlene, girlfriend that teaches here on Mondays called to see if I had power..they are about 8 miles away and they've had no hydro since last night and not likely for most of today..she's coming over early for shower and clean-up..

Watched news this morning and saw the 6 Canadian soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan late last week arrive at Toronto airport yesterday...the procession went via 401 and the Don Valley Parkway...each road was filled with onlookers carrying the Canadian Flag..our Emergency units were on hand saluting as well...thousands of people lined the street, all in honour of these soldiers...it is understood that many do not support the war efforts but indeed we do support our soldiers...Friday's here is 'red day' we wear red to show support of our troops..all so overwhelming...families of the fallen spoke, and spoke highly of how strongly their loved ones felt and that they felt they were making a difference..my heart goes out to these families...

Victoria Harbour, ON

oops, just thought about what I had written, hope it wasn't controversial and against Dave's policy..it certainly wasn't meant to be, simply an observation of this morning's news...so please no response to the above so we do not get booted of this site...how I would hate to loose you all....

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

if your worried betty just edit it all out....

a tornado!!! eeek, they terrify me. all my life i have had shocking nightmares about them amongst other things but they are predominant, we dont really have things like that. where i am the weather is fairly even. some high winds but not much gets to me as such. our suburb is a little bit of a hollow and the bad weather seems to pass over. hope that continues.

pay day i am going back to home depot and getting 2 birdhouses to paint. i was thinking of collecting some aussie things to put on it like gum nuts and such and make them like a little outback cottage.... will give it more thought. i am really looking forward to getting back into it all. we also use bingo boxes down here. do you all have bingo? we use books that you cross off numbers. people buy like a slanted pencil box about 6" wide and 12" long with a lift up lid. they keep their pens inside. on the outside they usually use a bull dog clip to hold their bingo books on while they play. I used to base coat them and paint flowers and teddies on them and such, their lucky numbers and the like. its been so long since i have done one. i will ask my husband to make one for me to paint and see how i go. there is a lady at work who plays whom i think would love one.

anyway, going to have a bath and look up some folk art patterns on the net.
If there are any lessons you would or can pass on, i would love to be your student....

xx

Morning All. It will be a scorcher here today! And NO rain in sight. My poor plants look so sad by the later afternoon. Already like 79 degrees at 8am!

Had a great weekend. My parents came up on Saturday so we went around to a few stores and had lunch. My Mom is a quilter and has gotten me addicted as well so she brought me up a huge pile of quilting magazines to look at. She also cut the bindings for two quilts I have sent off to be "quilted". Once I get them back, I just need to add the binding and they will be done. I'm going to send one of them to my old boss who took a new job up in RI last month - as kind of a "going away - thatnks for being a great boss for 3 yrs & house warming" gift. I'll take a pic and post them before I send it. I don't sew much in the summer as I am outside so much. Quilting is a cold weather thing for me.

Yesterday, we went down to Buggs Island on the NC/VA line and spent the day with SIL & her DH and another couple (friends of SIL). It was a great day for the lake and we kept cool by staying the water much of the time. Murphy is getting more comfortable in the water. We're working on coaxing him to jump off the boat into the water. He has the cutest life perserver!

So I'm going to do a best/worst for the weekend:

Best: my parents coming up for a visit

Worst: our son chipped his permanent front tooth while playing in the pool. He was quite upset but now thinks it looks "cool man"!

Learned: nothing - I took the weekend off from thinking!

Keep cool everyone!!

No thinking is good!
Only problem for me is I have days where i dont get a choice.. the old brain just doesnt want to work!

Do you do the quilting the old fashioned way?? by hand or is it machined? could you show me one??

pllllllleeeeeeeeeaaaasssee?

Im so going doen the craft road...... its theraputic! sanity saver so to speak.....

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

HA! I was thinking yesterday, just not retaining anything!

My Mom hand quilts the "quilting" part of a quilt but sews the pieces together by machine. I on the other hand use the machine for everything! I tried hand quilting but I was on my own and didn't have the patience for the slow process. I'm sure if I could sit down with my Mom and really learn the technique I could do it. I machine quilted a small wall hanging I've got - just straight lines. I still need to find fabric for the binding for this one.

The other two I've done are off at the quilters to be machine quilted for an intricate pattern. They should look really great so I can't wait to get them back. I also have start a "stack-n-whack" quilt. These are also called kaleidoscope quilts because the blocks are cut to look like well, a kaleidoscope. I also have a number of kits that I bought at a quilt show my Mom & I went to in February. I might get these done before my kids have kids!!!!

I am a totally craft addict! I have supplies for more crafts then some of the stores! I have stuff for soaps, mosaics, beads, buttons, paints, pots, scrapbooking, knitting, punchneedle, Xmas ornaments, tie dye, cross stitch, faux stained glass....whew!!! I need to have a craft party so I can get rid of some of this stuff!

lol...join the club..I have more craft supplies than Michael's I'm sure...but it's a fun addiction....

I have enough floral design supplies to open a supply store - and I actually sold a bunch of it a couple years ago. Somehow I just can't quite bear to part with a lot of the baskets, vases, ribbons, etc. I still do some floral design, but not too much.

Herbie, my dh definitely wishes I still partied - he's still the all-time partier and misses that side of me for sure. But it was controlling me (as it does him) so I was fortunate to get out alive!!!

Well HELLO Everyone!
Wow you all are talented! I absolutley loved the Crochet doilies!! i think it is a lost art. Never got into it myself, but trulely love the introcrite work. Wow to be able to design and make a dress now that is quite the feat! You and your dress are beautiful. I took up sewing way back in really only have made costumes for my kids and us and as of late enjoy making baby blankets. I do enjoy embroidary. Usually these are done in winter. Just something that keeps anxiety down. My hands have to be doing something..LOL. Enclosed is a bulletin board I made for an on-line friend. The teddy bear was a real doozey! Designed him with a coffee cup. Well I love the idea of scrapbooking, always say I am going to give it a whirl but so far just have boxes of parts and pieces. I would so enjoy a workshop to attend, but i don't cause I am not that great about attending all by myself.

Betty-Oh gosh loved your story-still giggling over hear! And your chair is just beautiful. Glad no harm was done with that storm, bet Sailor is curled up sleeping, after being so frightened...poor baby. Your art class sure looks like loads of fun.

Oh and i am on the same no cook, no shop agenda. LOL kids learned to cook from their dad. I can but man do I hate all that work. My son makes a mean breakfast-eggs bacon, pancakes toast-coffee fruit-the works I just love Sunday Morning Brunch. About 2 years ago i had to assume the dinner making as my honey had to work real late so thought i suprise him and make dinner. My son came runnning in with the camera and say I just have to show dad you actually know how to turn on the stove...hahaha-Brat!

Welcome ...Planter! Love how you picked your name. Sorry forgot the numbers tho-

trying to remeber all I've read-let me see, oh saw the cutest little additions-Little kitten and lap puppy, what an adorable little balls of fur.

Well -I've actually got loads of work so I'll be back later.

Ok Betty since you were so kind so share to take us on Betty’s Wild Adventure LOL I’ll tell you a story. In my younger days, I worked for a restaurant chain called Cracker Barrel. One hot summer afternoon as was common in rolls a tour bus, the doors open and out tumbles like frolicking puppies a plethora of senior citizens. No stretching, hobbling or creaking for this bunch they were lively and wide eyed.

Turns out that the tour originated in New York and was headed to Mississippi to do a little gambling and site seeing of the natives. Well you could tell that some of these elderly folks thought that the “Southern Charm” of Cracker Barrel was just “to cute” and they gobbled up the tin roosters, cast iron skillets, and John Deere T-shirts faster than an eye could blink. Now on our end, some of the waitress had never been out of the state of Alabama (some not even the town of Opelika) so these ladies with the big hair, gold sneakers, big gold purses and wind suits and New York accents just cracked them up. So we finally got them all settled at the tables and started taking orders…and the trouble began.

As policy dictated we got drink orders first and came back to the drink stations to fill the orders and get a basket of biscuits & cornbread for each table we all noticed that all our tables had asked for drinks in to go cups, we puzzled over this but thought “ok, there old, they drink slow they want to take it with them” so off we go to deliver drinks and take entrée orders. The only thing I can say about that is it was a nightmare! Between having these frazzled servers who had never even seen a Jewish person more less cooked for one as me what the heck kosher meant (I was the older and most traveled of the bunch and also in college so I was information central) to explaining what grits and pot licker was to an 80 year old Jersey guy I was ready to pull my hair out…and then through a gap in the table I spotted something….One of the little old ladies was spiking her drink.

Soon it became evident that ALL of them were spiking the drinks and the more we tried to stop them the wilier they got about it. The longer it took for the food the more boisterous they became. Soon we had 60 drunk as skunk geriatrics who felt that since they were old had the right to say anything they pretty much darn well wanted, and did. One bus driver who looked like he’d been through this before and was waiting for the lynch mob to come and ride them out of the restaurant on a rail, which we thought of. We finally got them fed, shoved a ticket at them and cleared the tables as fast as we could in hopes that they would take the hint and get back on the darn bus and head out of town, but ohh no, they want one last hurrah before they left. One lady who was on the heavy side with a booming voice, massive chest (with the best bra ever made or a boob job) Complete with gold tennis shoes, purse and wind suit with sparkles on it started to hunt through the gift shop with a purpose. You could tell she was looking for something particular so our Asst. Mgr went over to ask her could he help her find anything. She said yes she was looking for a doll for her granddaughter. Ok easy enough we had several porcelain dolls that were pretty enough so he steered her over towards those. “OH, No not those type” she replies and goes back over to the soft toys while she and several of her buddies look. So again Dennis goes to try and help and this time he ask her what type of doll she’s looking for and he gets a description, a very loud one “One of those Negro dolls, with a bandana on her head and a apron” Well I’m behind Bill and I break out in peels of laughter because even from behind I can see all the color leave his face then return in the fashion of red. Well you could have heard a pin drop. The only sound was my snuffling sound as I was trying to control my laughter. BTW have I mentioned that Dennis is African American as where several of the cashiers and customers shopping and checking out? The bus driver hurried over and yanked the lady by the arm, who really had no idea of what faux pas she had committed was protesting her treatment loudly the entire way to the bus.

oh to be a fly on the wall in Alabama that day!!! I'm sure the Cracker Barrel hasn't been the same since!

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Just FYI Betty,

You visited during one of our many many festivals- this one was Essence, a largely R&B/Funk music festival- it brings lots of younger, friendly, primarily black people into the city to have fun. Which would explain why you were so much in the minority, both age and race. :)

Though as a rule, black or white, we in the city are talkers and friendly, so I hope whoever you ran into treated you right... come back soon and see us when we're not so crowded- or so hot! lol...

Let's see- given the thread, I should answer the questions, no?

What I learned- Stressed out teens will find a way to make everything- including, in this case, the fact that her favorite sandwich shop is closed for vacation this week- your fault.
Best thing-Said teen is going away for 4 weeks to visit her father on Wed.
Worst thing-Said teen is going away for 4 weeks to visit her father on Wed. ;)

As for talents, I crosstitch, but no handy photos of it, and am a pretty fair amateur photographer. Here's a pic from the swamps of a Banana Spider- he's a big boy, but harmless.

Oh hahahahahahah, how funny! Can just picture you trying to contain your laughter. Don't think I could, are you still laughing today...What a memory.

Hi Tess. I was down in NOLA during the Jazz Festival although not for that. Had a great time walking around the French Qtr and eating way too much good food. I spent a half day over at City Park volunteering in the gardens. LOVED IT! I hope to get back there soon.

Everyone was very nice especially "Fast Freddy" the guy who tried to talk my DH into getting his shoes shined while we were sitting on a bench on the river. God only knows what that stuff was he squeezed onto his shoes was - all the while talkin, talkin, talkin so we couldn't get a word in edgewise. After he polished one shoe, I handed him a $5, he refused it cause it wasn't enough!!! He wanted $10!! He's walking around the river with this little plastic piece of fruit (you know, the kind the kids get that has powdered sugar in it) (Freddie's was grape!) squeezing what looks like Ivory liquid onto my DH's beat up topsiders, all the while complaining about how dirty they were! It was a riot!! Fast freddie got two more bucks out of us and and headed on to the next tourist with dirty shoes!

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Beth, that's a beautiful quilt!!

Araness, I'm so laughing out loud...omg...it must have been difficult to contain your laughter....I'm sure no ill was meant, but it could have started a riot...

I'm sure they were out of place like fish out of water...know all the trips I took over the years with this group turned out to be the greatest memories I have of my job...most have all passed on, but, those who are still with us remember the fun times...

Tess..welcome to the group, so very pleased you posted...as for how we were treated, well I've been back 4 or 5 times since and each time I fall more in love with the area than ever..probably the most interesting place I could visit..would go back in a flash....I'm french as well so enjoyed the cajun people...I would love a week or so going in the bayou and visiting graveyards..now doesn't that sound appealing!!!! Love everything old!! How did you fare in the trauma that New Orleans experienced? Is Bourbon Street destroyed??? Would love to go back tomorrow...wow, what vibrant colors your photo has...Banana Spider..yuk..how big would you say he is...and not poisonous? hmmmm claws look like the could sting...

Good afternoon Judy...quiet here today ... boss at meetings and Suzanne has enough work for 3..nothing that I can help out with ... so, to entertain myself today I purchased a map of USA, and giving you all a home...very interesting, most are on east or west coast..loooovvvvee the bulletin board...you are all just so talented...I wish we all lived closer so we could have a 'craft night' ...

Murmur...could you not do floral arrangment for weddings etc. might be a way to make a few $$$$... probably only to restock lol mom took florist course years ago and did some gorgeous arrangements but with age she just packs those flowers in....sooo I'll pass..did a Christmas arrangement and I took it out only when she visited..not nice - right?

Beth...love the quilt..do you do the handquilting? Love the color combination..do you know the name of the pattern??? I love quilting but there is only so much one can do...maybe this winter...I've a 'watercolor' quilt to bind and dear mom did a cross stitch quilt for a gift for me...it's a queen size and my aunt has offered to quilt it for me but it's just sooo much work for her and she's not a youngster..

Jeannine..think Fast Freedie took advantage of you...money was probably well worth it for the laughs you got...

Victoria Harbour, ON

hello Sher...beautiful colors...first of many to come I hope..will they vine all summer...I planted some this year but it was mid June so doubt they will have flowers....thinking of you today..hope your day is going ok...it's high 90's not far from 100 here in the city...very humid, calling for another storm later today...hope it happens once we arrive home...

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Hi, Betty...
Hot here too, worked in the flowers for a short time this morning, but soon gave up it was so humid. But I did enjoy the morning glories.

Betty Bourbon Street is still alive, can't say 100% well but still kicking. We went last Jan. with family from Chile, my DMIL had a blast. She speaks no english and just had to stop and look in every window, doorway etc. to peer in and peek at the people and goings on. LOL didn't bother me a bit but I thought the DH was going to lose it when she stopped for a closer look at a poster at a strip club. I wish I had the pictures of that visit but they are on DH's computer

LOVED the morning glory photo. I like that dark purple. Can you believe....this is a MUTANT morning glory too. Doesn't even look like a morning glory!

Thumbnail by ByndeweedBeth
Victoria Harbour, ON

Beth, I've never seen a morning glory that looked as beautiful as the Mutant..can seeds be purchased at garden centers?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, I always wanted to go to New Orleans... and what a cute new kitten!

Had a long vacation at the beach, which helped with a bit of perspective

Best: Lots of fun, swimming, seeing old friends, went to a pool party on the 4th, then another party afterwards..lol

Worst: my mom has become an internet junkie like no monster I have ever seen!

What I learned: Don't let friends who haven't seen you in years mix your drinks for you...heehee

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Mutant seeds are usually traded between enthusiast and are not generally available outside of Japan. There are a lot of threads in the Morning Glory forum about mutants. If this vine produces seeds I will save some for you,
beth

Victoria Harbour, ON

Well aren't you kind...I've planted morning glories but think it should have been done earlier, but am hoping to get blooms...I'm going to set up a journal in effort to show my garden and it's needs so I'll be organized for 2008...because of construction these past 2 years my plants have done more moving than I .. so now that reno's are complete I'll start to organize the gardens next year...

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

There are all kinds of mutant MGs. Here is one that has petals shaped like ribbons.

Thanks BBeth, That does sound framiliar. Highly poisonous too. It only grew the one year. I keep getting something new each year, If I like the leaves will let it grow and see what comes of it. Had a whole field of Marsh Marigolds couple of years a go. Very cool!

Little late but posting for last night, guess I was much to active all weekend and by the time I got home, make a few calls and fell asleep..stormed last night but no hail....

Best thing that happened to me yesterday was the d-mail from a young lady who was having difficulties and I've been communicating with her...she put my name in a frame on her friendship shelf which helps her get through the difficult times...I am HONOURED!

Worse thing..got a call from my Aunt...nephew Jerry Anderson passed away at 60..went out for a walk and fell to the ground...Jerry lost his father 3 years ago, he then purchased a house for his mother in a town nearby..Earla passed away last fall - cancer..Jerry retired early June, was a wealthy man, just built himself a beautiful cottage (home) on Lake Superior...everything a man could want..lovely family...anyway, he had not been feeling the best since his retirement and he and family thought it was a bit of depression as he wasn't certain he wanted to retire...only to find out, his heart was 'giving up'...very sad...

What did I learn...we'd better start to enjoy all that life has to offer, at no time do we know when we or someone we love will make their home with the Lord... Sometimes it's so hard to let the sadness take over..it's a fight to smile during these times, but smiles/laughs (although hurting inside) can make us appreciate life!.....do something for yourselves today..you deserve it..

Oh yes, had such fun marking where you all live on a map...now when we post, I have an idea where you are playing (lol)

Better get my act into gear...off to work..today I'm bringing in some knitting...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Laura, getting that package off to you today! Hope all is well in Australia..
