Mother Lode on the "Rescue Me Aisle" @ Lowe's

This photo shows how close it was to the house.

Looking at the back of the building now.

The guy with the black muscle shirt on was jacking it up and the front end loader ( or whatever the big machine out front was) was pulling it so that it would slide the whole building to the right..... one little inch at a time.

My neighbor is the one in the red shirt, kneeling. I really don't think he was praying, but I sure was! :-)

When they finally got it around that corner, there were a few trees, next to the fence. WERE is the operative word there. They are no longer there now.

Whew!!!! The building DID come out of that hole, after several hours of maneuvering it. I was amazed that only a couple of the trim boards on the little building got damaged. I've never seen a building being moved that way before.

You can see how close the two buildings were in this photo.

lol...and here I thought that I was alone in going to Lowe's and getting all excited about their .25 "Charlie Brown" plants...lol. I rescued a sad coral colored Salvia and it is really gorgeous now. Some didn't make it...but most of them have... I just feel sorry for all of the little guys that don't find a home for so cheap a price.

Janet - I see you did your braggin and boastin in another forum! I guess you were savin my feelings since you know I have no store at which to find "rescue me" aisles.....but $7.98!!!!! I am so green someone is gonna plant ME! Well done!!!!! (but oh I am so very very very jealous....)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL Mel and Shari! I do love a good bargain. I really feel sorry for them too. But my yard is only so big, so some of those poor babies must be left behind for other kind souls. Or for me, if I can figure out somewhere else to park them.

I told Connie when we left there that we oughta make a whole bunch of pretty container gardens and have a plant/garage sale. We'd make a killing!!! Many folks just don't want to go to the trouble, or don't want to get their fingernails dirty. I told Connie this morning I am going to paint my nails a vivid color, so it'll hide the dirt! :-) HAHAHAHA

I had a very hard time deciding just WHERE to post my "glee" thread! HAHAHAHAHA I knew it would go SOMEWHERE though! :-)

For those of you that don't know Shari, she, along with others, have got some incredibly beautiful photos in some underwater garden threads going on in the Tropical Gardening Forum. It's a whole 'nother world out there folks! :-)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Kind words - thankyou! :-) I will still envy you in my heart, but wish you joy in your new babies!

Great buys, Janet... Connie! and Connie! LOL

My MIL & I go to the sad plants section every time we find an excuse to go to Lowe's. When we go with my husband, we know he's getting real hardware kinda stuff and we just point to the garden center and tell him we'll meet him at the register. Invariably, he ends up meeting US at the register in the garden center LOL

We have found so many, SO MANY, wonderful plants at such cheap prices. I can't begin to name them all, but we have picked up a white and a purple butterfly bush, 2 esperanza (Tecoma stans), Plumbago, Bat faced Cuphea, yellow cannas, TropiCanna, and I'm not going to be able to remember the rest.

The white BB, no kidding, we were sure was dead... 2 or 3 different times. Kinda sad, but ya know... for so cheap... we thought. This year it's probably 4' tall and 5' wide and LOADED with beautiful white blooms.

We also get a LOT of cheaper plants at our favorite local flea market on 105. There are 6 or 7 flea markets on 105, but ours is Olde Security on the south side, about 10 miles west of 59 and 15 miles east of 45. There are 2 or 3 vendors we always hit. They sell gallon size just about anything for $3 and 3 gallon size of most things for $5, but occasionally a little more, depending on what it is. We've bought fig trees, pecan trees, grapevines, hibiscus, and a lot more for no more than $10--usually less. Got a lot of our garden plants there too (tomatoes, peppers, etc.)

Anyway, I'm rambling b/c it's 2am and I was having trouble sleeping. Time to get back to bed with thoughts of gardening in my head.

BTW, Janet. I love the design of your front flower bed and your solution to hiding your stump. If you have to dig around that stump to put your liner in, you might just have better luck digging to put plants around it. MANY times, I've done that and just put a pot on the stump. Either way you go, you have a good eye for color and texture mixing.

Thanks for sharing!

Last fall, I hit another "Mother Lode" at Lowe's. I had just gotten interested in Butterfly Gardening. I brought home so many plants that were just perfect for a BF garden for 25 cents each. I planted them into an unused pond form and have really enjoyed them this year. The Buddleia I bought full price, but everything else was a rescue plant.

I also got this beautiful Mandevilla for 25 cents at Lowe's. It's taking off this year! The blooms are such a vivid pink that I just love looking at them.

We have a wonderful mom & pop style nursery close by called Betty's Bloomers. I set up a spot on Go Gardening for them. http://gardens.com/go/view/6493/ They have many plants that you just hardly ever see at the Box stores and their 4" pots are $1.00. The hanging baskets are $8.00. They have several greenhouses that we can go through to ooh and aah. She takes her own cuttings and has a wonderful assortment of plants. Between Connie and I, the back of Connie's truck is completely full by the time we leave there. Yeah, we're addicted to plants and we like cheap "fixes"! HAHAHAHAHA

OK, I won't keep you all on pins and needles any more! HAHAHAHA

Yesterday afternoon, Connie and I were wandering around Home Depot in the Garden Department. Connie needed some clay saucers, so we walked by the beautiful statuary. I saw a gorgeous lady about 2 ft. tall that I really wanted. She was $24.99. I didn't NEEEEEEEEEED her though, so I kept on walking. I got to the other side of the statues and saw one that someone evidently had dropped. A big chunk of her neck was missing. Connie and I "conferred" and she said she knew how to repair it. So I told her I was going to see about getting it discounted. She said to me, "We're at Home Depot and NOT Lowe's. They never mark anything down here." I said, well they sure won't if I never ask. So I went to find someone to help.

The first HD lady wandered over to where I was talking about and said that only a manager could discount it. I said, then I want to talk to a manager. She said she'd go find one. I stood there and waited, and waited, and waited. It was hot and I felt like I was beginning to melt. So I went looking for someone else. I found a nice HD man. I asked if he was the manager. He wasn't but asked me what I needed. So I gave him my "spiel". Poor lady, no one will ever want to buy her. I'm willing to try and repair her, but would like a discount. He said, let's go see what she rings up at. So he punched in her "number", and it came up 24.99. He acted like he was only going to give me a few bucks off, so I said, I'll give you $15 for her. He hesitated a bit, then said, OK. So he wrote up a new price ticket for her and I brought her home.

Here she is. Awaiting major surgery.

Connie had just what was needed to do the repair. Don't ask me what it was. She'll have to tell us.

Thumbnail by UniQueTreasures
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Whatever it is, you knead it together quickly, then just apply. It's very sticky and was hard to get off my hands. I didn't realize I should have worn gloves. I'm just thankful that no grandbabies were here needing something. HAHAHAHA

Here's the back view of the broken goddess. I'm going to have to give her a name.

So I kneaded, and pushed the stuff into the hole. Then I smoothed it out as best as I could. And here is the repair job.

Thumbnail by UniQueTreasures
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Although it "set" within just a few minutes, it's going to have to dry completely. I am hoping it will lighten up as it dries. If not, I will make a necklace for her to wear. :-)

Very good job! Before it dries completely, get a piece of medium sandpaper and rough it up, it'll look just like the rest.
I have no idea what that stuff is called. I get it at the hardware store and it has something to do with repairing drain plumbing. My kind. Like the old lead pipes.

I'm off to get some sand paper and git er done.

unique...so glad someone else is a nutcase besides me....last year i didn't have the innergardner in me yet....; the innergardner is starting to emerge and i am now able to see the beauty in dirt cheap plants and how beautiful they will be in a couple of weeks or so; i have 2 nurserys close to me and this time of year they start giving stuff away, i mean GIVING it away....last year i got 15 of the huge nursery trays full of plants for free....; well, last week they started their plants at $1.00 each....so i am beefing up on the perennials...and trying to get them planted b4 i go get more...; anyway, i drove to town last week and sutherlands had their .25 cent rack....i got 3 angelonia, 2 nicotainia, ; then i was feeling a little less poor and much more inquisitive so i went to another rack.....everything was a buck; i got 2 2ft disco belle hibiscus for a buck each....and a penstomen for 1 buck...i am really mad at myself cause i didn't get anything else.....they had some other great perennials...; then back to my local nursery i got 2 monardias and 2 pineapple sage....about 2 ft tall each .....all for 9.00....so i am still goin....lets keep posting each other on these great find!!!!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh Man! I saw monardia for the first time at a local public garden. It's gorgeous! I've never seen them for sale here though. How big are the plants you got, and would they ship? (wriggling eyebrows)

This is the one I saw. I didn't know what it was until I posted it on the PHOTO forum.

You got some excellent deals there S & S. Way to go!!!

You pegged the term just right, I think. Innergardener! I like it! I are One!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

the 2 i got were over 2 feet tall....; this is that 'hometown' nursery so alot of their plants haven't been manhandled....i haven't ever seen them this tall b4....even last year they werent that tall at this nursery...the 2 i got were pink....; i am not sure if they would ship....and i think i got the only 2 they had left.....but i am going again tommorrow...so i will have a look...

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

unique....i don't know about you but i am in my 50's...and there was this book called something like.....'the inner game of tennis'....i was trying to learn to play and this stupid book was talking about going deep inside oneself to relax and visualize and play tennis well......;

well, i take that one step further with gardening....relax, have fun and find that gardener inside yourself .....thus innergardener:)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I knew they got pretty tall, but was hoping you'd have found some smaller ones that could be shipped. I'd have gladly paid you for your time and trouble. Though, as you know, I need no more plants. (Those famous words will most likely be on my tombstone!) I would have bought all they had also. I just love those big bodacious wicked looking blooms!

Gardening is about the only thing I truly enjoy these days, other than my grandbabies. I find it very relaxing to spend at least an hour out there watering each evening, praising the things that are blooming, and encouraging those that aren't there yet.

I've always been an "outside the box" thinker, but more so this year than ever before. Whenever we go to Goodwill and other thrift stores, I'm always trying to find unique things to use for planters and garden art.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

unique... i am trying to get to thinking more out of the box...but sometimes it aint easy for this ole gal; i will check tommorrow at the nursery to see if they brought more monardia; what i love about it is that the foliage smells lemony....; plus this monardia is pink....so i will check tommorrow for ya and keep you posted:)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks. I don't remember smelling the leaves. I just remember how pretty I thought it looked.

We don't have any "hometown" nurseries here. I do prefer shopping at places that are more mom and pop type shops. They seem to have heathier plants that I don't mind spending "real" money on (meaning prices are more reasonable for the quality of the plant).

Sometimes, when I see how much plants are neglected at Lowe's and Home Depot, I just want to go get a job there to take care of them. I know there are A LOT of plants, compared to what's in my yard, but if they'd hire folks that act like they care, their plants would look so much better. But then, deals like I got would be much more rare. So I'll just shut up and tear up my application! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

unique ...you sound like me...

our town is 1800 people...we had the nursery here last year.....then the people running it got greedy and decided not to reopen it....the ma and pa people supply the greenhouse with plants....the retail person just sells them and takes care of them.....i have toyed with the idea of doing it as i already have a store and this would just be an addition....but then i also would be afraid of people trashing my plants....don't know whether i could deal with that....so i still haven't done anything to see about getting the greenhouse here....; ahhhhh then i would have to work....ahhhh why would i wanna do that ?? i work in my yard everyday till i come to work and then i work.......on second thought....hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

What type of store do you have?

It's a catch 22 situation! HAHAHAHAHA

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i actually have 2...one is closed...but we own the building so it is sitting there like i left it the day we closed the store...antique store...; we also have our other business which is a video/dvd rental busines....but it has alotta room for a greenhouse:)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hi folks! I know I'm not in Texas - but my mom and dad are in Brownsville - so maybe I qualify by proxy....anyway, I am so jealous of your great sales, but I wanted to share my own little "great deal". When people leave the island, they have to sell or give away all the potted plants around their residence....leaving a "clean slate" for the next tenants. Anyway, my friend is leaving and gave me this beautiful Ixora cuz she wanted it to go to a good home! Its about 5ft tall and full of blooms.

Thumbnail by Islandshari
Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I just love the two tone colors on it:

Thumbnail by Islandshari
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Connie is more the antique gal in our family. She even lives in a historic section of town. Looking at her home from the outside, you'd never know that 90% of what's inside is "really old"! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA She always KNOWS what things are at the thrift store when we see something old. ALWAYS. And now that the internet is here. Whoa Nelly! She can find parts for things on there like you wouldn't believe.

Hmmmm..... I can "see" the video/dvd/greehouse business doing very well. Kids and or Dads shopping and browing videos, while the mom shops for plants. You could hire college kids to run the DVD part and you could putter around in the plants, keeping an eye on things. Set up some movies and popcorn for the kids so they can be entertained while Mom or Pop continues to buy your plants. If your feet get tired, plop down and watch a movie. HAHAHAHAHA As much knowledge about plants as you have access to here, your greenhouse would do a wonderful business.

Janet

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey Shari! You were talking at the same time I was typing! HAHAHAHA You are more than welcome here Sweetie. We Texans are a friendly bunch of folks! With the heat and humidity we have here in Southeast Texas, sometimes I feel like I am in the Tropics.

Your plant is gorgeous. I've seen that name *Ixora* in several threads, and even seen a plant or to at the box stores. But none was ever in bloom. WOWOWOW!!! It makes me think of a hydrangea. The 2 colors are so pretty too.

Beaumont, TX

That's that plant Janet! The one that the man was returning at HD that his wife didn't want. LOL We just couldn't believe she didn't want it! I'd never seen it in bloom either. But there were some blooming at HD the other day and I nearly had one in my basket but resisted as it was 20 bucks.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

(Looking over non-existent glasses at Connie) Oh Reallllly? I remember the plants you are talking about. Maybe we can get Shari to send us a tiny piece. (wriggling eyebrows at Shari) HAHAHAHAHA

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I have Ixora in 5 different colors....Have tried to root a white, but it didn't take - I have red, yellow, deep coral, pink and this two tone now. This group here doesn't have any Ixora in it - but Ti, Diffenbachia, Croton, Portulaca, Walking iris, Euphorbia, Aloe, Bougainvilla, Panax and Wandering Jew.....just a corner of my front yard, but the reason I'm posting it is cuz probably all together I spent maybe $75 on this corner....its filling in very nicely - you can see the second story mark on the far right....so they are pretty big plants.

Thumbnail by Islandshari
Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Geesh - I can''t imagine anyone not wanting an Ixora - they are such easy plants. Oh well - that's what makes horse races. Janet - I meant to tell you first thing and got sidetracked....I LOVE your little aphrodite! If her neck scars - just give her a pretty scarf of sweetpeas, or morning glories....I have cutesy pootsey things in my garden....silly frogs, turtles, crickets...But have always wanted a garden goddess just like yours. Well Done!!!
