Mother Lode on the "Rescue Me Aisle" @ Lowe's

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh Man! FIVE!!!! I have Ixora envy now! HAHAHAHAHA

Show us more! That's beautiful! I am going to be working on a Tropical area in my front yard soon. I am gonna pick your brains soon Gal! HAHAHAHA

Beaumont, TX

Might cost a fortune to ship. And I do mean "ship" from where she is. No UPS ground! lol

You didn't answer what the yellow blooming shrubby thing we both got was called. The tag must have come out in your truck.

Beaumont, TX

Crotons get THAT big?????????????

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Shari. I have always wanted one of these also. I've seen them at Garage Sales in the Ritzy parts of town and stood there just sighing. I'm thinking she will go into the tropical garden, far enough away from the road to not have easy access to her. I want to light up that area at night and I think she is definitely a treasure to be proud of. :-)

I've had to enjoy her in the garage so far. It's raining and I don't want her to get wet at this point in her recovery. The "stuff" is not hard yet, but still tacky. It's smoothing out just lovely.

I may make a necklace for her anyway, even if the stuff dries to the same color.

Janet

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

islandgirl....you indeed got a lovely treasure....very beautiful:)

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

You mean this? http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3649738

I'm gasping at Connie's question about the Crotons? I didn't recognize them when I first looked at the photo. Good Lord! Maybe in the Islands they do, but surely not in this Texas heat!!!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Shari, do you have USPS Global Priority available there in the Islands?

And more importantly, is it legal to ship plants? I had a problem trying to send cactus to Canada and learned my lesson there.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

My bath is about to overflow. I didn't want you all to think I was ignoring you! HAHAHAHA Aaaaahhh Calgon! Take me away!

Janet

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Sorry....I'm still laughing at the UPS Global Priority.....nope....we get a plane in twice a week with mail....some that got sent two or three weeks ago! However going out isn't so bad....I sent some Hippie bulbs to Raydio a couple of months ago and he got them in 5 days! Shocked us both! So I can try to send you a cutting....pick a color. Same friend gave me this Caladium....I've been wanting one for a long time for my shade garden. Have it right next to my bird's nest fern....really pretty. Oh - and the Crotons - I have another one over by the patio that's only about 6 ft tall. Yep - they get big out here.

Thumbnail by Islandshari
Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm not picky about the color at all. I'll let you choose. My house is white though, so maybe NOT white. I'm sure I will love whatever you send! :-)

I have a couple of "exotic crotons" that came from Home Depot. They are very small. I am trying to see if I can get cuttings to take root. Have you ever tried cuttings from yours before?

Thumbnail by UniQueTreasures
Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Yep - every time I cut them back! I usually let mine root in water first - but sometimes I just stick em in the pot....usually works....Janet d-mail me your address, and I'll see what I can do. Ixora are real water hogs though - so be warned! Your Orange Prince is beautiful!!!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I've really enjoyed this pot of plants. The Orange Prince though needs to be moved out of that pot. It keeps on losing it's blooms. I thought at first maybe it was getting too much sun, so I moved it to the deck that has a lattice cover. It did better, but then, lost most of it's blooms again. It's probably getting too much water because I do keep that pot very moist. I have spaghnum moss on the top of the soil to keep it from drying out. The container itself has no hole in the bottom. Now and then I have to drain the excess water out. That's probably what the problem is with the Prince. I found him at either HD or Lowe's. There were a dozen pink ones and only one orange one. I didn't NEED another plant, but knew if I didn't get it, I probably never would! HAHAHAHA Lordy I can always think of a REASON for buying a plant.

I do love those little crotons. It took me a while going through the ones here on Dave's to find what I had. The only thing the tag said was Exotic Croton. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr Since joining Dave's, I want to KNOW these things! Whereas before, it never bothered me to not know the "true" name.

I'll shoot my address to your Dmail. Shari, I really appreciate your sending me a cutting. I'll mail something back to you that won't be bothered by mail time like a plant would! :-)

Janet

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

That's a sweet offer - but totally unecessary! I just hope the Ixora works out for you! DH is home from work - so I should go think about dinner....talk to ya soon.

Yokwe,
Shari

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I like your flawed goddess....just goes to prove that even a goddess can have something wrong and still be beautiful! :) Glad you fixed her neck ache!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you Connie. Finding her has given me a whole new perspective on what I want to do out in the front yard. Even though the sun is shining at the moment, according to the weather folks, we are still due for more rain. So I've left her in the garage for the time being.

I've been looking at (googling) Greek Goddesses, and I finally figured out WHO she is.

From Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Hēbē (Greek: Ἥβη) was the goddess of youth (Roman equivalent: Juventas). She was the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hêbê was the cupbearer for the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, serving their nectar and ambrosia, until she was married to Heracles (Roman equivalent: Hercules); her successor was the young Trojan prince Ganymede. Another title of hers, for this reason, is "Ganymeda." She also drew baths for Ares and helped Hera enter her chariot.

In Euripides' play Heracleidae, Hebe granted Iolaus' wish to become young again in order to fight Eurystheus. Hebe had two children with her husband Heracles: Alexiares and Anicetus. In Roman mythology, Juventas received a coin offering from boys when they put on the adult men's toga for the first time.

The name Hebe comes from Greek word meaning "youth" or "prime of life". Juventas likewise means "youth", as can be seen in such derivatives as juvenile.

In art, Hebe is usually depicted wearing a sleeveless dress. There is a statue of Hebe, by Robert Thomas; (1966), in Birmingham city centre, England. Antonio Canova also sculpted four different statues of Hebe: one of them is in the Museum of Forlì, in Italy.

Janet, when I lived in the PI, my yardboy would cut the crotons to a level height. Then he just stuck all the clippings, regardless of length, into the soil @ other spots. By the time I moved out of that house, I had the most beautiful 'wall' of crotons a good 6' tall. Of course, they were hiding my ugly concrete wall with glass pieces in the top.
True story!

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

WOW Smockette! A whole wall of them!

This is the first year I've had any crotons in quite a few years. I can remember buying 2 big pots of them years ago and just loving the big bang of color they added. I don't remember them getting very tall though. Perhaps if I'd planted them in the ground, I'd still have them. That was way back when, before I truly "committed" to taking care of my plants. There was too much "life" going on at that time, between raising kids and working to really do my yard justice.

Now that the kids are grown and gone, and I no longer work outside of the house, I have much more time to take care of my plants. Ohhhhh if I knew then, what I know now...... I can only imagine how jungly my yard would be! HAHAHAHA

I'm looking forward to seeing you again in Houston next month. I can't wait!!!

I've been starting cuttings like crazy. This is the first time I've tried rooting hormones. Still have more "spots" to fill too. :-)

UniQue....is that the origin of our "I've got the hebegeebies?? ha

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Ummmmmmmmmmm ...... I don't think so Connie. I've always thought of hebegeebies as something terribly frightening.

Janet

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Janet - loved the stories! I work with the native handicrafts here on island, and one of the reasons I do is because of all the folklore and mythology that goes with most of the pieces. It's all so fascinating to me! May your garden goddess grant you and your lovely plants many, many years of youthful vigor and beauty!

Smockette, here too there are walls of crotons.....and depending on the amount of sun they get, some are dark purples and greens, others are oranges and reds, and still others bright yellows with green spots. Mix in walls of Eranthemum's and you have a whole rainbow of color, without a single flower!

This isn't a wall, just proof that they grow well in pots:

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you Shari for the blessing. :-) I'll be checking the mirror to see if it works! HAHAHAHAHA Just kidding! I love learning about "new" things. It makes life so much more interesting. The internet makes learning so easy these days.

That's one "serious" croton TREE you have there Shari! The biggest I've ever seen them with my own eyes are the pots of them at Home Depot and Lowe's.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Shari, I knew it wasn't a wall of them or you would not be able to see any of the white concrete! lol

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Well, I'm never sure of the intelligence level of the people I'm talking to, so I just wanted to be "perfectly clear". LOL.....Could I convince you the concrete was allysum or something?????

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

The corner of the house looks just like the corner of my house in the PI.
Solid square, no bed, no nothing! lol
:~)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Oh! The Army Corps of Engineers built your PI house too? These were built in the 50's and still hangin tough. Good builders those COE's!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, that was my new house offbase! lol
We were on a waiting list for 2 yrs to move onbase! Hooray, we moved onbase! That house was built b4 Pearl Harbor! Wall to wall windows!
They tore it down when we moved out!
Then it was back to Texas for me, regardless of where he was going to be stationed next! Good thing for him, he came back to Carswell!
The way of military life! Travel, see the World @ Uncle's expense. That's the joke b/c they don't tell you what you have to live in & with when you are overseas!
I still have three 'military' sisters that I am in constant contact with & that was the early '70's!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I know what you mean! The overseas life makes for strong friendship bonds. We have friends we made here in the 80's that we are still very close to, and friends we made in Saudi Arabia in the 90's from all over the world, that we still keep in touch with. When you share the same strange experiences, in fairly close societies, you share something that other people just don't get, and it stays with you. But then, now that I have DG, I am making new friends from all over the world, withwhom I'm sharing totally different stuff. Ain't it all so much fun!?!?!?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

problem is that sometimes with the kids.... instead of making and keeping friends they stay alone and don't know how to make best friends. I was over 30 before I had a best friend....

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

My Dad was in the Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland in 1963. They bought a house close to the base. While he went overseas several times, we never went with him. He brought back a lot of neat stuff from other countries. He retired in 1973. I grew up in San Antonio and stayed there until I got married in 1979. Although my Dad has gone on to Be with the Lord now, my Mom still lives in that same house.

My husband's Dad was also in the military and his whole family traveled all over the world. He said the same thing Renata. That it was hard to make any friends when you knew you'd be gone in a year or two. He went many different schools. There was one other family though that pretty much followed them from base to base.

Janet

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

yep. when I graduated HS I had lived 4 years of my life in the states. Born in Germany, lived Wake Island and Italy.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

My older brother was career Navy, I was engaged to AF. My AF went to Nam & I stayed in Texas. He came back after I went to Ipswich, MA. Sad story!

Then I married career AF & my big brother never got over it. He told me 2-3 days b4 he died, that he never liked my one & only husband. I told him to STOP! He never knew my husband! He just didn't like the fact that he was AF & not Navy. Simple case of big brother wanting to protect little sis!

I spent 12 yrs as a dep/sister of the Navy & then 7 as dep/wife of AF. Only needed one more yr & Uncle should have given me the 20 yr retirement! LOL

People stateside that have never been overseas just don't understand how lucky we are here in the States!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Martial law? Most don't even understand the definition of the words!!! Sad fact!!! But I lived thru Marcos in the PI!!!

I'm a Degreed Accountant & do Income Taxes on the side. No $$ just for friends.
BUT I tell EVERYONE....I'm glad to pay my Taxes b/c I have seen the other side & people just don't realize how lucky we are to live in this Country!
AMEN!!!

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep... I lived the oil crisis in Italy. LINES? noooo we just didn't HAVE any gas! *giggle

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Hear hear, Smockette! I've only been to New Zealand and London, both on short vacation type trips. And even though those are both very nice places, I still really appreciate what we have in this country. I've worked in companies that had offices in other countries and let's just say that our post office, our utilities - pretty much everything - works better here than other countries' services do.

I am not a military kid - my father was a Marine but was out before I was born. But he certainly instilled an appreciation for our country in both me and my sister.

Maybe everyone feels this way no matter what country they are from, but I love to travel and visit other places, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere but here! It's not perfect, but no place is, and I'll take the US over anything else!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

My god, I can't believe I actually hesitated before responding! I was thinking that I really love living out here, so maybe I'm not as nationalistic as I thought I was....but no, that's not it. Our little island out here is just a small slice of America, spack dab in the middle of the ocean. I have traveled a lot, and I will always love to do so. But my DH and I decided long ago that the best thing for American youth would be to have every child, say as a junior or senior in high school, spend 6 months in a third world country. It would sure show them what they have, and what they should protect! American kids just have no clue! And I guess - to me- what is so great about America, is that we can fix what ain't great! So many other countries just have to accept it.

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL OK Unique I got brave today and went to Lowe's to look at the "Save me Plants", and let me tell you what a great deal you got!! Out Lowe's only marks things down to 1/2 of the full price! LOL SOOO.... to say the least I was mad because you where getting a better deal! LOL But I found to plants that I have been looking for all summer! LOL And they where both like $1 so.... it was not bad I guess! LOL

Then as I was standing there another worker walked up to the "paint" (paints the color dots on the plants) lady and said I think you need to come and look at some more rows I have new ones coming in and I am not sure where else to put them. LOL I got ALL EXCITED! LOL And thought about you and Connie and tried not to laugh! LOL I really wanted to stand there and see what else she showed up with but I really don't have any place to put new/more stuff and I can only bring so many in until I am "living" in a greenhouse! LOL

Anyway I just thought I would let you know! LOL I got some miniature Zinnias and Vice Minor (the vining kind), some kind of Begonia (which I paid $2 for but it was setting in a place that said 87 cents! LOL But it too had a yellow spot so I did not fight the guy when I ws checking out! LOL), and a pot of orange Daises for my daughter! LOL I will post pics later I have to get off here I have promised here we would plant HER spot today and it is already 7! LOL

And there where several plants that where marked down that I thought nothing was wrong with at all other then they needed to be watered! LOL They where dry as a bone! LOL

I really would like to go back and get the Cannas that I saw!! They are going to be beautiful!! And where only like 5-7 for a Bucket! LOL It looked like they where in a paper bucket anyway! And they where closer to $20 regularly!! LOL

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

txflower...our lowes does the same cruddy thing....1/2 price...and some of the plants were not even soil level....like dead big time...; anyway,i was ever so disappointed....(like i really need anything )...BUT, (we always need stuff, right?)....i did happen to get some gallon containers of carex for 2 bucks each...and some other perennials for .50cents at my hometown nursery....

go get those cannas!!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I think I wrote this above, but they said the rack I bought was called a "cold pack." You might call your local Lowe's and ask the manager if they ever do that. I still have the slip she rang up from, and the total retail was over 300.!!! ...for 20.00...unheard of. And they were ALL in beautiful shape. I thought I had died and gone to Heaven!! :)

Canyon, TX(Zone 6b)

LOL You make the score of the year if not a life time Connie!! I remember reading that!! It made me sick, and jealous and so happy for you all at the same time! LOL CONGRATS!!!

I SOOO want the Cannas! LOL there where at least 5 of them! The had a reddish stripped leaf and where going to have big orange flowers if labeled right! LOL I would rather have red flowers but it would have been awesome either way! LOL

I really don't know where I would put them but.... awwwwww I am still thinking about them! I literally had to stop myself! LOL And think "it is almost the 1st and I need to pay bills, and rent! AAANNNDDD MAYBE they will mark them down some more! LOL Even though nothing else is lower then 1/2 off! LOL And if they are still here Monday it is meant to be!" And I have been thinking about them every since! LOL

Cannas are a bulb right? They double every year?

I remember a lady here in town had them and just mowed them down every year and they grow and looked great the next year!

AWWWW Maybe, maybe I will go get them tomorrow! LOL I know that is bad but..... I don't ever see Cannas in the store very often, and I know they are pricy! LOL

I felt guilty putting some of the Zinnias back! LOL I could hear them just having heartbreak saying "We need a good home TOO!! And we KNOW you will give use one! We will come back next year we promise! AAANNNDD we give good seed!" LOL

How sad is that! I felt sorry for a plant! LOL

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

From the sounds of it, you saw a Tropicanna. Those are like gold around here. The leaves are gorgeous and the blooms are pretty too.

I bought one this year. They had been about $35. They had split a pot into 3 and I gave $12 for it.

Cannas will get away from you if you aren't careful about them. We started with ONE canna about 15 years ago. It has red leaves and red blooms. Not the big showy blooms, but smaller blooms. Now I have several "stands" of them. They pop up wherever the heck they feel like it. They go to seed, so if any seeds fall, they sprout up a new plant. If you dig them up, you had better use a bulldozer because next spring, more WILL come up!!! Sometimes you don't even have to wait until next spring. I've had them come up in many pots when I know for sure I didn't plant them there. I have several varieties of them now.

I love them, so don't get me wrong about them. And please don't let me talk you out of the. That isn't my intention for telling you all of this. They are really beautiful plants and definitely are worth the money. :-) Just be REAL sure you want them "wherever" you decide to plant them (it). Cuz there ain't no going back! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Might as well rescue some more of those zinnias while you are at it. :-)

Janet

You can see how tall mine get in this photo. This was June last year. They got even taller before summer was over.

LOL I know you are just trying to help Unique! LOL I have always loved Cannas! LOL Any Tropical for that matter pretty much! LOL

I have a porch/deck that is at least 2 feet of the ground and is open all the way around. You can see that some thing used to be around the bottum, but who ever lived her last pulled it off.

Anyway that is where I would plant them is right up to the deck, and then at least you could not see under the deck! LOL It looks so ugly! But my cats (2) and my little dog love running and hiding under it! LOL

Besides since I am just renting I am not putting out any money to sand and redo the deck! I must have been painted red at some point and then painted over and weird cream/tan/greyish color! LOL

Yes you are right they are Tropicannas. Here is a link I found about them http://images.ask.com/fr?q=canna+tropicanna&desturi=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tropic.ca%2FC%2520-%2520D%2FCanna%2520Tropicanna.htm&fm=i&ac=24&ftURI=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.ask.com%2Ffr%3Fq%3Dcanna%2Btropicanna%26desturi%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.tropic.ca%252FC%252520-%252520D%252FCanna%252520Tropicanna.htm%26imagesrc%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.tropic.ca%252Fimages%252Fplants%252FCanna%252520Tropicanna.jpg%26thumbsrc%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252F65.214.37.88%252Fts%253Ft%253D17490246885205378849%26thumbuselocalisedstatic%3Dfalse%26fn%3DCanna%2520Tropicanna.jpg%26imagewidth%3D316%26imageheight%3D536%26fs%3D41%26ft%3Djpg%26f%3D2%26fm%3Di%26ftbURI%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fimages.ask.com%252Fpictures%253Fq%253Dcanna%252Btropicanna%2526page%253D1%2526pstart%253D&qt=0 But it says you have to dig them up in the fall/winter after the first frost and store them and I REALLY don't want to get into having to do all that work, and I don't really ahve a good place to store them!

I did not realize you needed to do the same thing to Dahlias when I go them or I would have stuck with Zinnias all the way around! (At the time I could not really tell you what the difference was aside fromt eh fact that Zinnias usually get like three feet tall! LOL) They both have the same looking flowers and in the same colors! At least the ones I got do! LOL

But I do think I might go get some more! LOL I can dead head them for seed right! LOL

Can you get seed from Dahlia flowers too? Now that I have learned that I have to let the flower dry on the stem before you deadhead it! LOL Man have I been shoting myself in the foot with that one! LOL
