Don't feel bad about that. I learned that this year also when my bluebonnets went to seed. I plucked a whole bunch of the pods thinking I was doing good. Then I found out I was supposed to leave them until they turned brown! Oops!
I don't know that I'll be digging anything up. If it survives, it survives. I've never had to dig up any of my cannas in the past. Of course, we only get about 3 really cold days here in Southeast Texas.

Mother Lode on the "Rescue Me Aisle" @ Lowe's
Well our Lowes didn't have much on sale but I did get 4 plants for .25 each. They had some nice dark blue salvias that I haven't seen before. I got two of them. Still haven't figured out where I'm gonna plant them though.
Connie and I went to M & D today. Well, actually we went to Sutherland's (which is across the street from M & D) As we were leaving Sutherland's, we saw a sign ALL PLANTS 1/2 PRICE!!! Well, you can bet your bottom dollar that Connie and I went to check out THAT sale! I came home with a nice size Desert Rose tree and a flat of caladiums and coleus. Did I NEED these plants? Well doggone it..... YES I did! I'm going to use the caladiums to "announce" the entrance to my Tropical Garden. In other words, they will line the little path there. I didn't have a Desert Rose, so I definitely needed that one! It does have mealy bugs though, so it's currently in isolation. The trunk is braided on one of the trunks. The other isn't braided. There is some damage to one of the braid sections, so I may end up with a total of 3 of these. All in all I spent $22 on those plants and had a great time looking. Most of their plants are on the pricey side. Connie found a red plumeria and a yellow shrimp.
I don't have any of the dark blue salvia. I bet it's beautiful. I've seen the black and blue and it's really pretty. I do have mystic spires. I just love that plant. It's been blooming it's little heart out for me since early spring. Those that I bought last week were red.
I got home this evening, made dinner, and went out to put something over my milkweed pods before they burst. I was too late. 8^{ There were only 2 of them left.
My Desert Rose and my Crown of Thorns both didn't make it through the winter. I really liked my desert rose... it was just sooo pretty.
Connie has had several of the Desert Roses. We've been eyeballing the Crown of Thorns. We've seen it, but wasn't "in the market" for it at the time.
that was my first desert rose. Had it since I moved in here... 5 years... then... dead
Oh Man. I'm so sorry to hear that. I wonder if it got the mealy bugs also? This is my first case of mealy bugs. I plan on spraying it down with insecticidal soap tomorrow.
oh well fine you girls.....just GLOAT(grin)....; my lil hometown nursery was suppossed to get a whole new shipment of plants ....with the prices of a buck or 2 each....and did they?? NOOOOOOOO....so i am having withdrawl.....; so they said that monday or tuesday is the next shipment....so i will come here and BRAG BRAG BRAG.....(grin)....; i hope that they have something....will keep you all posted!!!
Well I can't think of a better place to "brag". We all love to hear about good deals on plants. I hope they have some really good ones. You're way overdue for a good "plant fix"! HAHAHAHA
Janet
unique...if you have mealies....you need to chunk the soap and purchase bayer tree and shrub to apply when you water.....; take it from my experience...if you have mealies on one plant you probably have multiple mealies and they are hard to get rid of if you are just spraying.....last year i kept spraying and spraying and spraying ....and the next day they would be back.....etc etc....; finally got the bayer tree and shrub and you put it in the water and it gets rid of them...
janet i am SO overdue for a plant fix.....i did however get a planter fix....5 new ones and dirt cheap at that....; i was trying to find those bee balms for you when i go to the nursery that has them on sale
OK but ONLY the desert rose has the mealies and it's "quarantined". It just came home today. That was why I was going to treat ONLY that plant.
Connie had them on her hoya and got rid of it with the Insecticidal Soap
oh...i didn't read b4...yup if it is only one then that may work....; and glad you have it quarantined.....; my dang mealies have already started up this year and from a perennial that i have had a couple of years.... i hate them...
Oooo... :o Did someone mention Crown of Thorns? I do love these plants. Have about 7 of them in different colors...including a tree in a pot about 4 1/2'. I've discovered tho...that not only do yellow jackets love them...but also love to build nests within their thorny branches. (They love the nectar on the blooms). So I mixed up some insecticidal soap and spritz em every now and then..lol.
Melanie
I've only seen them in yellow and red. Do you have photos of your trees Mel?
I've got one photo, Janet....taken last year of my large tree in a pot. It got so big that it started to lean over....and has refused to sit up straight ever since, lol. The blooms are pink....and I also have some yellow ones, red ones....some hybrid pinks and some hybrid reds. These are one of my favorite plants... :)
Melanie
WOW Melanie! That is huge!
Looks pretty wicked too! Maybe with grand babies running around, I don't need one of those afterall. Connie could have one at her house though.
Thanks so much for posting the photo. It's a really pretty plant.
Janet
Hello all,
I am posting this in a few different spots in hopes I get a fast answer as I know this is time sensitive (I think)!
I got a Reiger Begonia Today at Lowe's on the clearance rack. The sign said $3.47, the tag said $7 and the computer said $28! LOL
I got it for $2.00 which would be an awesome and happy tail, but the "employee" that picked it up out of the cart to get the tag off of it broke more than half of 1 on the three plants off that where in it!!
They are all Reiger Begonias and where all different colors! Beautiful! The piece that he broke off had a huge bed of flowers on it and more growing on the stock!
My daughter had eyeballed it the other day when we where in there looking and I told her that maybe they would mark it down and but in the clearance rows. She got all excited and said, "YEAAHH then it would be a good deal and we can get it, it is my favorite and I would be really happy to have it!"
I was amazed they did but there it was, and the part that he broke off was the part that she eyeballed and the reason she had picked it! I told the guy it was the only one, and he said well I guess it is a $2 plant now!
I just looked at him! LOL I know he did not mean to break it off, but still!
Anyway, Can I root the part that got broke off?
Should I use "Take Root" cuttings starter?
Should I just stick it in water?
Or should I just stick it back in the dirt?
I just am not sure about cuttings!! LOL I brought back some cuttings from my Grandmothers Geraniums and stuck them in water and they all died!
I have some plant tape and a steak (sp, or wrong kind of steak anyway! LOL), so I can wrap and steak the two broke steam pieces back together and maybe it will grow back!
I did the same thing to a Snapdragon and Salvia and it worked! LOL
Thanks for your help!
it is my understanding that you can root via water or soil for the begonia...my last begonia i just put in soil and watered it...and it rooted....just make sure to not to let it rot.....; i am just now starting to use a rooting medium so i am not sure if the success rate increases with that....
as for geraniums....i have a 50/50 success rate for them....just cut and put into soil and make sure to water it...yet not let it rot
LOL Well now I know!
I always throught you where supposed to root it in water until it had root! That is the only way I had ever heard of before now! LOL But then I guess if it does not have a root bump (what ever that part is called! LOL) dirt would be better! LOL
the only thing i have ever rooted in water is ivys, coleus, sweet potato vine... those did well....everything else has been done in soil
wow, i wish our lowe's did that!!!
