Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

What color are the bugs?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

t.j..................... if you will either put a picture of the bug on the bug i.d. forum or just give a really good description of what he looks like and what he does , and on what type of plant he does it on somebody on that forum will know.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K. here are some links to the cactus bug, very interesting. Josephine.

Hmmm... well, I don't grow any cactus, so I have noooooooo idea! But, did y'all know that, if you can't get an ID on DG, you can send Howard an e-mail, and he will answer.

Real interesting Josephine, Mexico has a rich culture and I find all aspects of it very interesting.
Linda you got to help me find that thread :) about the Desert rose.

I just got to let you guys see what a show my Black&Blue Salvia is putting on. :)

Very lovely Sylvia.

Dallas, TX

Thanks Jo.Next year I think I am going to move Ladyin Red next to it, what a contrast that will be. :)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Then all you need is some Salvia Coccenemie!!! How about that for a major misspelling! :~)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

whas rong wif 'at spellin'?

Dallas, TX

LOL @ MAMAJACK

Did I have that one before Linda?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the link Josephine, but that's not it. It's a larger, beetle-like bug with 1/2" long antennas and a needle for sticking into the prickly pear. They only like prickly pear, none of my other cacti and succulents. I think I'm gonna have to get a photo.

I found the bug. The immature ones look different. I thought the adults were a the ones eating the others, but it turns out they're the same bug. Dangit!

broncbuster, what is the name of the bug? My friend has the same ones up in Oklahoma and they are destroying her prickly pear.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Sweezel, here it is. the only photo is of an adult. The immature ones don't have wings.

nearly looks like a stink bug.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Any updates on the date/location/time? I saw the red river round up thread. TX/OU weekend is Oct 6th.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

We are still the last weekend in Oct.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Good weekend.

Dallas, TX

I have seen that bug often and he likes more than prickly pears.

Dallas, TX

Did i hear there was a date set for the Swap? October 27?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

They may like more than prickly pears, but PP must be their favorite.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Sylvia - the date we have talked about is the last weekend in Oct. Sat or Sun is yet to be for sure but we tend to alway do these on Sun. so I would guess this one will be too. We are going to meet at the same place we always do, it will be fun. I have a lot of plants getting ready if they beat the heat.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey guys! Who is the resident tree expert?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

what type of tree? Natives tend to be Josephine or Hazel.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Mitch! It's a tree called a Gum Bumelia, it's a native and I've found some info on the web, but I'd like to know some more. The tree is not in the plant files. Is Hazel a user ID?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

no Hazel is Htop, and Josephine is Frostweed. I dont know anything about the tree but I am sure if it is native they will.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

broncbuster, I had a mature gum bumelia at an old house on a fence line. They make great small evergreen trees. If you nurture it and let it grow, it will eventually look like a small live oak. Kind of like the one's you see in the depths of the hill country. You just have to watch out for the thorns. And it suckers pretty heavily, but they are easy to mow down.

Here's the plantfiles entry... http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62572/

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Bronckbuster, here is the link to the plant files for the tree you are looking for;
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62572
Sometimes looking by common name doesn't work because plants can have many common names, of course we don't always know the scientific name, so we have to do the best we can.
Here is another link;
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ornamentals/natives/bumelialanuginosa.htm
I have not personal experience with the tree, but it sounds like it would be a good one to have.
Josephine.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Sweezel! Just what I needed! I didn't even think to put Chittamwood in the search. How big was yours at maturity? How come mine lose their leaves in winter?

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for that extra aggie link, Josephine! I wanted to know the height at maturity...80ft! But the DG page says there are several different varieties....I hope I have the 80ft variety!

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I didn't know anything about Gum Bumelias either, but was given one at last years RU in October. It's small but weathered our cold/wet winter and extremely wet spring/summer, so it's a keeper in my book. See, Bronc, all the more reason for you to attend the RU! Well, that and I'm hoping to get some of your cow poo!! :-)

Carla

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I doubt yours will ever get to 80 feet. The Texas champion is only 79 feet and champions are usually not the norm. Plus it is in east Texas and the trees in east texas grow a lot taller than the ones west of I-35. :-) I would guess the one at our old place was no more than 15 feet tall. One of these days I need to go over and ask the new owner if I can take a picture of it.

As far as loosing their leaves, I should have said semi-evergreen. The one we had only went bare I think one of the 5 years we were there, but were in the city in kind of microclimate.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Looks like I've got a lot of shoveling to do between now and October. It will take me back to my barnboy days in highschool.
Sweezel, maybe my Gums aren't the norm! I could have the future champion! Did you ever try to eat the fruit that they produce?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Bronc, last wkend some of us got together in Hou. You should have seen the non-plant material that was there!
Coffee grounds, 5g white buckets, vermiculite, garden art, various kinds of 'poo', wine bottles for bottle trees, etc.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

All the rain may have done a number on seedlings this year.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

that all sounds like plant material to me! *giggle hey if I can use it in or on my garden it counts.

btw that reminds me... if anyone has cats and uses the cat litter that comes in plastic sorta square buckets (will take a pic if you dont' understand), please save buckets for me.

Thanks Renatelynn, you just reminded me that I need to clean the litterbox. ...and no I dont buy the buckets... too expensive.:(

Mitch check out this cute little Canna a DG'er sent me from another state a year ago. I wonder if its 'City of Portland'?

Thumbnail by City_Sylvia
Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

ohhh I just love that one.... maybe I can get some from you some day.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Same here... wow. Not City of Portland, they are more Salmon in color these look brighter. Very nice... I love them.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

My computer is down so I'm just dropping by occasionally on my son's. It's not the 'puter... it's having to sit in his room to use it. LOL.

I was just wondering... isn't Oct 27 a little late for the fall swap? Last year it was Oct 8. That's about 5-6 weeks before the first frost date of Nov 17 (or whatever it is these days). But Oct 27 only gives us a couple of weeks, which isn't much time to establish a good root system before winter.

Dallas, TX

Do you guys see how much is in that pot? No probelem getting some ... just remind me. I got to go thru my old Dmails and see who sent this to me. I think It might have come from Nebraska.
