What is growing nicely for you right now? page 2

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Plenty of room there for more perennials Andy - looks good. Fanfare has shorter flower stems and the fluted flower petals as differences.

Celeste - The smoke tree my nieghbor has is the biggest one I have ever seen -25' tall. I have a smaller purple one but the flowers are pretty thin and off mostly.

Thanks Pirl - I liked that photo.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not a great photo but it shows the back of the J. Maple that is above the pond waterfall.

Andy, looks good as always!

V, I never saw a j. maple's backside before. I found it strangely appealing.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Well you are at that point in life, Dave...

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Dave, it looks better now, I just mowed the lawn, lol. Thanks.
Victor, how old is that beauty?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I hope over 18 for Dave's sake.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Spoken by Al, who has a thing for Little Debbie! Hmm - what kind of company am I keeping here??!!

Andy - thanks - it was planted in the Fall of '03 and was already about four feet tall at that point.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Don't be talking bad about Little Debbie now!

I took a wider shot of some hostas today. I am trying to have them in front and columbine in back for my plan.

What's the big gold one? Not Sum & Sub, is it? Is that your basement with the glass block? Nice stone.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Our house is a 1911 Craftsman, since I was talking about that a while ago.

I need to find out what THAT gold one is, I do have S&S which has similar form, but some darker spots in it

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, my S & S have turned more green even though they get a decent amount of sun. Do you have any shots of your whole house? I have an appreciation for architecture as well. Took a class at Columbia on NYC architecture - loved it.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I can get you one, there has been some remuddling over the years.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Please do.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

One of the main reasons I liked "Hannah and her Sisters" (the NY architecture)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Such beauty in NYC's buildings!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Stuff is really popping here now.

This is that tall floppy aster. I must remember to put a cage around it next year.

I didn't know the hollyhocks were that close.

great shot of the bachelor button bigcityal

very pretty bed sarahskeeper... i had my first polish spirit blooms yesterday... just planted them last year.... love it when something new blooms

:)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Al - love that hollyhocks. Is it 'Nigra'? For the asters you can use a little old lampshade with fabric removed and earth staples to keep it in place year round. I do that with our Baptisia. Of course it looks "unusual" but it will remind you of me and my insanity.

Good idea Pirl - homemade Peony ring.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Al I love that hollyhock! Mine are no where's near blooming.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Victor.

Pixie - neither are mine.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks, yes it's nigra.

I thought Andy invented the peony ring last month.

I don't really have any themed gardens, but I always thought it would be neat to have an oddity or Addams Family themed garden. You could have that hollyhock and maybe this Green Wizard rudbeckia - any other suggestions?

Mitch (big in daylilies) did create a daylily garden with names from the Addams Family. I have Lily Munster and that's enough for me.

I don't remember the Green Wizard being part of the Addams Family but the mind is always the first to go.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Green Wizard wasn't a part of them-you're mind is still gone though. It is a flower without petals.

Here's one for Victors hot colors nightmare. Oranges & Lemons gaillardia.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Green Wizard is quite interesting though looks as if it's missing the petals.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I really like that Oranges & Lemons gaillardia, and my mind is already gone......I miss it!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

OneWish, that Polish Spirit Clematis can get really big ~ to 12 feet. The ones on the dog fence are are about 9 years old, give or take. I started them by 'layering'.
Pirl, I like the lamp shade idea. Off to yard sales, lol.
Al, I 'invented' the "Horizontal Peony Fence", that's different. It's not round, lol.
The yellow Gaillardia is a beauty, is it tall or short. I don't want the tall ones, I'd have to invent a Gaillardia fence.

Pirl has a light themed garden which she inspects in her coal miner hat!

Al, Why don't you cut your aster back?

Cool - it reminds me of middle aged balding guys who, in major league denial, grow their hair long.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dave - I actually saw that one and thought so too.

I don't cut anything back - I like tall plants - even if they flop I guess.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

There are a few wacky allium. I just tried hair.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

A good Tracy Desabo Aust tip is cut back the front half. Then the back blooms first (& biggest) and when they are done you have more smaller flowers in front, covering up the spent stalks and doubling bloom time.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

You know if my Addams Family history serves me right they had a scene once where Morticia was gardening and pulling out normal plants and leaving the weeds.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

And the ever popular removing rose flowers to leave the thorns.
Victor, Maybe it should be a Chernobyl garden?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dave - Sad to say I've added a new garment of sorts - an umbrella hat. I won't need it if I wear the head light unless I don't want a moonburn.

I heard about a tip as you've explained and tried it with my rugosa rose and it worked!

Al - if you like floopy you'll love the joys of aging.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Floopy sounds even worse than floppy.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You're right!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's loopy and floppy combined.
