Pirl - I just told someone on another forum (maybe containers?) that you were on vacation!! Did I get you mixed up with another person? Eleanor

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just returned this afternoon, about 3 PM.

About 20 minutes ago I received a note from the daughter of a DG person I've been friends with for quite some time and she died this afternoon. It's rough.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very sorry to hear that Pirl.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Me, too. She had survived so many back operations that I just didn't expect this ending.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Oh, my god! Is she very ill or did she die??

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Pirl - welcome back, did you get the 49 dmails I sent you?LOL

That is sad and a reminder that these words and pictures do relate to real people with real lives.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

She did die, Dave.

Yes, Al, and I have a photo for you from Provincetown - from a certain person named Pearlene - trying to imitate me!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Here's something to smile about.

Oh! I enjoyed her company here. May here family find the strength they need.

I'm very impressed by his teeth! So nice and neat - not like Harry.

Dave - we cross posted.

Many are sending their good thoughts to her family. She loved her garden so much.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pirl, sorry to hear about your friend.
Pixie, love your irises, how long is their bloom time? I had some at our old house that lasted awhile. I planted Tigers Eye(I think that's what it's called)here and the flower only lasts about a week very disappointing.
Dave, love the color combo of the peony/iris...is that an outhouse in the background?
Seandor, I haven't personally met anyone that actually talks like that.
Gardenmart, how long ago did you leave Trenton? I live just east of there.

Pirl - glad you're back. So sorry to hear about your friend. Eleanor

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

flowerjen, I have dwarf, standard, and tall bearded Iris's so the bloom time last longer by having all 3. They started a week or 2 ago and some haven't even started yet opening yet.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Sorry to hear about your friend, Pirl. Michaela

Thanks to all.

The Rugosas were in all of their glory on Cape Cod.

It's the amazing fragrance wafting through the air when there are 1,000 of them in bloom that captures my heart. Ours were in full bloom about two weeks ago.

Now I hope I selected the right thumbnail. It will need pruning or else take over the area (not a bad idea).

I have no Rugosas. Should I??

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Pirl, please accept my sympathy for your loss.

Hugs and love,
Harper

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Harper. She was very sweet and loving.

Victor - I've heard they do sucker but mine hasn't yet. It's the fragrance that gets me! They would make a great barrier if you needed one but they do have thorns (actually prickles but no one asked).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Pirl. I've heard they are more shade tolerant as well. Where are yours sited?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Full hot sun. The nice part is they can be clipped back to a foot or two if they get too wild with no harm and more blossoms. They hate pesticides and can be killed if they're used on them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do they get any fungal nasties? How long do they bloom? Do they repeat? Sorry for all the questions but I prefer people's actual experience over other sources.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No diseases but I'll keep checking them. They have the usual great first bloom and then it's sparse but enough to keep me happy. By the time summer ends I will hopefully have kept you updated on it enough that you'll know if you want them and then you should find them at 50% off.

Calais, VT

Hi Pirl, add my condolances, sorry for your loss.

Do you grow the Rugosas for the hips?

This year everything is growing well, last year I lost all my cukes, it was wet and cold. But this year so far, terrific on everything. Even have a few small tomatoes. The bibb lettuces are spectacular. Keep your fingers crossed!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks TD.

I thought the birds would be thrilled with the hips but that didn't work out at all.

I can't believe the tomato stems this year. I think they're on steroids.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor, I have a rugosa seperating my veggie garden from a perenial garden in mostly sun. Roses peak now but repeat in lesser quantities. For some reason mine isn't a huge bloomer but it is no fuss, no disease, much prettier leaves & hips than other roses.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Agreed. Rugosas remind me more of photos of little boys with tousled hair and smudges on their faces as opposed to formal portraits - like hybrid teas.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice analogy Pirl. I always prefer easier to perfect. Plants that is.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Not CZJ?

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Pirl, Please accept my sympathy on the loss of your friend.

Sue

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

She's already perfect. As for easy...

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh dear! Victor's ready for trouble!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Duel with Michael Douglas?? He can have Sharon Stone back.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

He might want Sharon Stone front.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

He can have her any way. I'll 'mind' Mrs. Douglas.
