so i just got a huge order in...and of course told the hubbie that this was my last
purchase for this year....; BUT that was b4 i had to rearrange some plants that
the sun is damaging and now i have a HUGE HOLE in my little patio stand....
i HAVE to fill it...HAVE TO...so how in the world am i going to explain that??
tell me your cover stories to that significant or insignificant other in order to
disguise, explain, rationalize etc your new needs, purchases, trades etc??
So kids..what are your cover stories for your new purchases?
"I have to buy what's out there, if I don't, nobody else will, and they will die. DO YOU WANT THAT ON YOUR CONSCIENCE????"
Doesn't really work but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
voss...you made me laugh.....how funny; that wont work.....but i gotta drag some more in....i have blank spaces...
DH just rolls his eyes - but if I can get them into the ground immediately, he doesn't even notice - lol!!! The other day I had a large amount of pots sitting by my car and he said "where in the world are you going to plant those?" Well, they were actually leaving our place and going to several cousins' gardens so I was happy to have the opposite answer that I usually have!!! I have several orders about to arrive via the Internet and am hoping I am home when they get here and DH is not!!!! I did have a plant sale this year and made $600 so he's less likely to give me a bad time (in fun - he doesn't really care, of course).
I need to quit getting emails from these Garden Centers. LOL It's hard to resist when you're sitting looking at all these beautiful pictures. I try to keep DH from knowing what all I'm buying. Sometimes he thinks I'm nuts! LOL But the next thing I know he's bragging about how pretty our yard looks.
We are in the process of trying to plant a privacy screen. Dh's cousin has a place just over the way from ours and we would like more privacy. They have a home in Houston but do come up here on weekends and rip and roar with their 4 wheelers and lots of company. Nuph said! We are old foggies and like things private and quiet. ;)
murmur....how many years had you been doing plants in order to sell 600 dollars worth of plants....i am hoping to do that one of these days...but not there yet....; one of my downfalls would be if someone damaged one of my plants...couldn't deal with it ....it would be WAY TOO personal of a damage...
i too have to wait for the mail every day to make sure i get the evidence and get it 'disappeared';
This message was edited Jun 8, 2007 3:11 PM
dancey...do yall wanna kill his cousins? we too are old foggies...and want NO noise...bless you hearts knowing that it is family and that is EVEN harder to live thru as you Have to be nice...how are you building a privacy fence?
well, i just had a slip; i had a 5.00 off coupon that expired tommorrow....so i used up 10.00 worth of gas to use a 5.00 coupon to buy plants to replace the ones i had to move cause they were getting burnt up ....makes so much sense doesn't it ? somehow?? make sense?? you understand don't you?? hmmmmm?
now i have to buy new pots.....that is legal right?
Sticks, makes perfect sense to me! And, yes, new pots are legal. Anytime.
And I've only been in this house for five years and the gardens have all been new since then. I have a lot of plants that divide or spread easily - i.e. Cornflower, Heucheras, Daylilies, Ornamental Grasses, Salvias, Lamb's Ear, Tall Verbena, etc. I sell them for very little and accordingly feel good about making a few dollars and also about sharing. If something doesn't make it, I'm not likely to know - and would prefer not to!! BTW, for pots, I beg, borrow and steal. I do buy good potting soil, but get the HUGE bag of Miracle Gro at Costco and figure I only spend a dime or so on each pot.
murmur....i buy miracle gro too....as for pots...i buy alot at garage sales...i love the terra cotta pots for some of my stuff....i find that they are timeless; for other items...i love the stryofoam pots for other items...; i also use baskets, metal etc....but i am completely out of pots...; whats a gurl to do??
I GOT CAUGHT.....we live 45 miles from 'town'...so i decide i NEED to go to town....never in a million years did i think i would get caught....; but i call hubby to check in and he sez....i could have sworn that i saw you this morning in 'town'...; i can;'t lie...; so i said you did......he asked what was i there for....i had to tell him; .....so at least i am legal; but guess what else i got ? a lovely set of wind chimes i have been wanting for several months and they were the last set.....so i HAD to buy them....will photo later
Sticks sure it makes sense!! LOL Makes sense to me. Now you must buy pots. Heck what's a pretty plant without a pretty pot??? Right???
We have a brand new barn that is so pretty, clean, and nice. We added a nice lean-to covered concrete porch on the front of the barn. Have big cedar posts attached to the roof of the porch. It's really cool looking. We love it out there. Lots of shade and a nice view (except for the neighbors). Wahhhhhhhhhhh! So we have planted a very nice live oak tree that we have been growing now for a while. It is already 5' tall and is doing nicely. We also planted a Gardenia out there. We don't want a 'set' look. Everything being the same plant. I like a mixture of different things. I have planted some 'Laura Bush' petunias out there since there is shade. Those petunias do overwhelming well for us here even in the hot boiling sun even. I have two Blue Point Junipers I am thinking about planting out there. This area gets good morning sun and filtered sun till sometime after noon. It's a large area so I may even put in some tall cannas. It may take a while but pretty soon we'll have em' fenced from view and hopefully some sound!!
I buy less, but more exspensive plants it seems. How about this one then " If I don't buy it, someone who won't appreciate it will"
the story on the chimes ......during the pre spring warmth i was out...and it was lightly raining...and no greenhouses were open...no one was selling plants yet....waaahhhh; i am perusing places in the misting rain....i hear the tinkle tinkle tinkle of these chimes....they are lovely sounding....i said, i am not paying 40 bucks for some stupid wind chimes.......; so i have been looking looking looking for something i would love as much as these......alas none; so i gave them my money today....i deserve it....
Yes indeed - you do deserve it!!!!! I heartily approve.
The pots I am usually looking for are the free ones for the plant sale plants - the local hardware store garden center often has a lot of them in the back of the store. Some are discards by the garden center people of plants that died, some plants that just didn't sell and don't look so good (I love nursing them back to health!). And local gardeners drop their empties off as well - sort of a "recycling center." I go by all the time (plus I job coach disabled people there twice a week so have an advantage!). For my own pleasure, I try to buy pots on sale, but have certainly given into temptation more than once!!! I love blue ceramic pots and have quite a few of them, along with a blue bird bath.
Uh oh. DH was sitting on the deck, but just came into tell me I have two packages out front. Oh, well. I almost got away with it!!!
murmur....too funny..i hope it is something good:)
Five new daylilies (you know the routine - buy three from this sale and get two free . . . who can resist), three Salvia East Friesland, three Amsonia "Blue Ice" and Viburnum dentatum Blue Muffin.
Would someone please tell me where I am going to put all this stuff? I also recently got some other daylilies and several clematis - they are in pots waiting for a permanent home. What was I thinking???!!!
murmur ...you were thinking just what i was thinking....which i am not sure what that was....but we will figure it out!!!
I love yard art , pots, and vases.
The only way that it works so that I don't get yelled at, is if it pretty enough for DH to brag on it.
The other day I bought this vase from a potter from Nawlins that came to town, and I KNEW I needed to dress it up to make the hubster happy.
I went and bought some pretties to slip in to it, and life was good. :)
Gorgeous!!!
You did good. That's a beautiful vase.
texy....very lovely ...if hubbys happy, then everybody is happy:)
well i have bought 2 out of the 6 new pots that i need....will spread out the purchase over a week so that it doesn't seem like a major expenditure.....
i feel a major slip coming on....now that i bought the 6 new bouginvillas....and the 2 new purple fountain grasses....well....i have found several places that the fountain grasses would go good....so i will need to buy several more to "pop' the look of the various places i put it.....but then when i was looking for the bouginvillas....well, i found 2 other sages that i hadn't seen this year....they happen to be annuals...but i can take cuttings....and i am thinking i need to buy 2 of those...and then all will be well........right?....you understand that all will be well....and that i really will not need to buy anything else this season,.....okay...this month...alrighty...this week.....i think you understand and that there are heavy drugs for whatever my malady is....
Sticks - I love you to pieces . . . I'm sure you (and probably everyone else on DG) are related to me!!! Or at least we've shared our very contagious disease with each other - even via the Internet!!!
Darned if I didn't find myself ordering from Wayside again - "buy one, get two free" is just sheer drug addiction for me . . . can't help myself at all!!!! Not fair. This is what I succumbed to this time: Heuchera Brownies, Salix Flamingo, Leptodermis oblonga, Pyrethrum James Kelway, Thyme Ruby Glow, Callicarpa Early Ameth. Keep in mind, I do have to pay shipping on the "freebies" so it isn't quite the great deal it appears to be, but oh well . . . makes me happy!
Now I just got an e-mail ad from Jackson & Perkins selling rose/clematis pairs - not inexpensive at all, but gorgeous beyond description. Heaven help me!
murmur...will have to go check out wayside...i am still looking for a couple of 'things'...some are things i don't even know i am looking for...we are SOOOO bad:)
Just tell DH that you filled the gap by moving and/or divided some other plants that you already had :)
I'm pretty fortunate, he only gives me grief if I have too many pots waiting to be planted.
shadyfolks....thanks for the cover story...; actually mine is fairly good....(fairly)....but i am flipping nuts ...my brain needs to stop obsessing....(grin)
Whenever I buy new plants I have to take the purchases and sort of blend them into the other plants untill I can get a chance to plant them. Once there in the ground he'll never notice. Whenever I get boxes in the mail. they are all trades over the internet, wink wink.
I am evil,lol
Sue
Sad thing is we all know our DH all have their own vice that they lie to us about...now doesn't that sound like another topic for a thread, LOL! So all is fair in love, right!
shadyfolks...cant you just see a thread entitled....'dumbbroads expenditures and how to act like we don't know what they are doing?' ....too funny; but they DO have theirs i know....and it is afterall an expenditure for the house....it is not like a diamond bezel for my watch.....oooopppss...that was in october ...and that was after he bought 'ourselves' a plasma humongus tv that only he watches.....so i had to buy a diamond bezel for my watch which he still hasn't noticed....i wear it daily and our watches are matching so you would think he would notice SOMETHING....but NOOOOOOOOOO....
oh well i have already said way too much....going back to my corner of the world:)
LOL, Shady! Yup - in fact, DH had had quite a few drinks yesterday when he told me about my package(s) delivery . . . so guess what? I don't think he has any recollection of it!! I guess I can find the rainbow just about anywhere!! (And, honestly, he doesn't really care what I spend - not only does he drink & smoke, but he golfs as well so spends far more each year than I would ever come close to!)
There is a lovely Hebe with a pale blue blossom that I simply must buy for myself (it's at the local garden center) so when I go to buy DH's Basil tomorrow (at his request), guess what else is going to jump into my cart!!!
Sticks! That's a good one!! Besides my plants, I don't spend much, but since I have both a granddaughter and a great-grandson on the way, I admit to buying a lot of little baby clothes!!!
murmur...load up that hebe in the cart....and make that a double!!!! he he
i really really don't spend that much either....(normally)...and that bezel was 50 times cheaper than that tv we just had to have....so there....(grin)
murmur....i just realized we are in the same zone....and yet so far away....amazing; does that mean you have as long of a growing season as we do here in texas? and do you have wind?
Sticks, no I don't think we have as long a growing season - and I think your temps are much higher in the summer. We had an extra cold winter with temps in the high teens a few times and far more days/nights than usual in the 20's and 30's, our highs are generally in the 80's with occasional days into the 90's. We definitely have wind, though - especially where I am as we are just above an inlet (Honeymoon Bay, which is part of Holmes Harbor, which is part of the Saratoga Passage, which is part of Puget Sound, which is part of the Pacific Ocean - lol . . . did you get all that?) and since the land in back of us was clear cut there is nothing to stop or slow down the wind.
We are not into our major gardening time yet - today was only in the high 50's with rain, rain, rain.
murmur....i can't believe that you aren't quite into your gardening time yet.....i think i would move to the worst place in the world just to have as long of a growing time as we do....i don't know what i would do with myself.....gardening is my therapy...
Sticks, believe me, I am out there anyway. In fact, I was out in March in horrible weather digging up a garden to plant my new roses that DH gave me . . . it was a killer! And I've been expanding a bed and building a little rock wall, plus have planted a gazillion things. It's just not warm yet!
