Carolyn Whorton...the jumbo bulb you sent!
Where's the pics of all the Caladiums everyone's planted?
Hi Janet,
Is the first Carolyn Whorton pic "just the mammoth bulb"?. I know they had a ton of eyes on them and would be producing allot of leaves. The second pic is also Carolyn Whorton. Those are #1's I sent you, right?
Like I've said in numerous post's, the bigger the bulb, the more leaves you'll get.
Those mammoth bulbs were huge though!!
I have a real nice bed of Carolyn Whorton too. I planted about a dozen of the mammoth bulbs in a 4' X 4' bed. They're un-believable!!!

I wish they would start in the Spring...I would just have them everywhere!!!! BUT I have to dig them and bring them in....ACHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Well I've learned my lesson Janet. The earlier you plant them, the longer they take to come up. I suppose it all depends on how warm the ground is, but the ones I'm putting in now take 2 weeks vs 5 in April. I just wish I had more shade cause I would love to plant some of the less sun tolerant varieties! Gotta love them though!
I am blessed with plenty of both Sun/Shade! So I am really excited about the different varieties we have been able to get with Bill and also with Bert's Co-op...all of mine are just awesome! I have several pots planted more recently and of course you are right they are already coming up..LOL Yours are doing great too! Love that one!
I've just loved planting Caladiums, as this is my first year. I've totally made mistakes and planted them in the wrong places (different heights and non-sun tolerant's). I say that I've learned my lesson in planting, but I'll probably be out there in January planting. hahaha. Not really...but next year, having a little experience and knowing what to expect...I'll plan a little more. I've already got my eye on 2 beds totally devoted to these gorgeous plants. The nice thing in Fla. also, is that we get to enjoy them for an extended time.
Very nice Kat!
KatG- yours are wonderful!! Getting zone envy here :)
Bill, would you say that if one got jumbo bulbs, they might be stronger and thus survive inground thru winter? Or would you still recommend lifting? I'm in zone 9a.
Janet the jumbo C. Whorton is incredible!
Nery,
The size of the bulb isn't going to make a difference. You're border line on whether they'd survive in the ground through the winter. If it wasn't a cold winter they might be OK. If you had a cold winter, I think you'd be in trouble if they were left in the ground.
The Carolyn Whorton pic from janet is from a mammoth bulb. They were good size mammoth's too..

Yes, it was absolutely HUGE! I have never seen anything like that one! I just thought about digging them up and had a brain storm...I have GRANDCHILDREN! LOL I can get them to dig them up and they will have a ball! They are six and seven so they could it easliy and they love my gardens!
Great question! I have seed pods too...never even crossed my mine...LOL
It is a great question...I always just nip those blooms off as I figure the foliage will do better without having to share. Every time I do though...I think about those seeds!
Holly,
Cute little boogers aren't they?
Here's a web site that has allot of information about Caladiums. It's from the University of Florida. They're the ones developing allot of the new varieties.
Some of you might find this site interesting, I learned a couple things too.

Nice little surprise Holly!
My Caladiums are hanging in...Some of the Sun haters that are getting too much sun are starting to decline, but most of the others are doing well. Next year, I'll know better.
Here's a mix of Red Flash, Galaxy, Rosebud and Gingerland (with some horrible firecracker bush!)
Kat, they look great!!

Love your Fla. Cardinals Kate!
Where did everybody's Caladiums go?
