Where's the pics of all the Caladiums everyone's planted?
Not sure what this one is. It was supposed to be either White Queen or Red Flash but I think it is something else. Whatever, I like it! I just got Marie Moir and Gingerland. Potted them yesterday so it will be interesting to see how long they take to do something. I got the bulbs in these pictures in late March/early April and I almost gave up on them. I think some of them took almost six weeks before they started sprouting. Once I put them under lights, they moved along a bit more. Somebody above posted about using a heat mat and I might try that next year. Anyway, they were definitely worth the wait!
Gingerland???
Trackin,
Yep, the stragler is Gingerland. Thankfully they look great planted with Miss Muffet

thanks bill! i always like to know the names, even the bad boys. lol i think they all look terrific.
Two questions Bill: how many leaves does the average bulb grow? Will cutting the flower off increase the leaf production?
Good questions, pennefeather! I'd like to know the answers to those questions -- also do the leaves last the whole season or will the earlier ones fade? Several of mine have what looks like a flower or seed bud and I'd happily sacrifice that if it means more leaves. . . .
Those are two good questions.
First, the number of leaves a bulb produces is going to depend on several different things. What variety it is the main one. How much water and fertilizing it gets would also play a role. To be honest, I've never counted the leaves from just one bulb(I'll have to try it) When I plant my containers and put bulbs in the ground, I like them nice and full. I have a bunch of 10" pots I planted and I put (6) #1 bulbs in each pot. When planting in the ground, I put them 2"-3" apart.
The flower doesn't really do anything. Some varieties will produce more then others too. I personally cut them off. The energy is then re-directed back to making more leaves. De-eyeing a bulb is the best way to get a bushier plant though.

Thanks, Bill. I think I will cut my flowers off, too. They don't really do much for me and I'd rather have the leaves. Did not try de-eyeing this year because it is the first time I have planted caladiums. Next year I will probably try it with a few to see what different results I get.
Yea!! Mine are finally peeking through the soil!!
I cut the flowers off ASAP, I want foliage naturally on these not flowers! Better the energy get spent on leaf production! I notice a lot of pre-started caladiums this year have quite a few flower stalks....

If I had planted my Miss Muffets in the ground 2 - 3 " apart, I sure they would be very full, but I would need about 50 bulbs! I think that next year, I will just use them in a smaller area. Meanwhile, I will go ahead and get rid of the flowers, and FERTILIZE like crazy.
Just starting to come in...will take pics when they are up!
My Florida Sweethearts are popping up! I'm so excited!

I noticed several of mine beginning to come out....some from both co-ops too! I marked them so I can tell which were which...different varieties too. Can't wait to see them all up and nodding!
Tplant, Does this planter look familiar?
This is from my daughters house Miss Muffett and Red Flash. I find it interesting, the completely different looks I got from the 3 differnt combs, of plants, pots and locations. My daughter sent me this picture. I'll have to go up and get a better one to post.
Wow Bill very dramatic show you have! I like the "Brandywine" - might have to order some of those!
Those are wonderful! You are a few weeks ahead of us I think. I just noticed a few beginning to come up in some of the commercial landscaping around town, so I think mine must be getting ready too...lol I will post pics though as soon as they do!
I did find this one hiding underneath some plants in the front bed....so that is a great sign, they are coming soon!
