July 21st West Houston Meet

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Gang,
There are two running threads about the July 21st Houston Plant Swap. Could somebody get Dave's people to consolidate the two into just one thread for us and give us a new link? THANKS, and much appreciated. Getting harder to keep up with two LONG threads about one topic!

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Could you bring me a start of your fig? Looooove those things!

Ann

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I think combining the two threads would be difficult. Perhaps we should start a new thread titled 'Houston Swap Trade List' and everyone copy and paste their own trade list into that thread. Have that thread exclusively for the trade lists.

What do ya'll think?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, originally one of these threads was supposed to be just for trade lists and it quickly ended up having conversation too. I think that's human nature and would just happen again.

So I'm afraid if we do a third one, we'll just end up with 3 instead of 2!

Perhaps, instead, let's just all agree to only post on one or the other from now on?

Or, Gymgirl can go ahead and talk to DG and see if they can combine.

Whatever! I'm flexible.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

I've written Dave and asked him how to consolidate the two threads as they were getting too long and therefore "messy". Didn't (&don't) know how to do these things so anyones suggestions on doing something along these lines such as knolan & Gymgirl (I think) suggested would be great w/me.
Edited to say that I was emailed by Terry and she informs me that we could agree to use just one of the threads and they could eliminate they other. Told her that I would get back to all of you and let you decide what to do, if anything, as I was not about to make an Executive Decision :>). Anyone have any ideas what if anything to do to make this a bit more manageable?
Ann

It would be complicated for Dave.. So, we have to agree to keep conversations on one thread and swaps and contributions on another thread. I vote to keep this one for the trade lists/pot luck lists, as started. Go to the other thread for general conversation.

Everybody CUT YOUR OWN general conversation posts from here and move them to the other thread --

"Texas Gardening: Houston (and surrounding area) meetup/swap meet."

How about that?

Gymgirl - I'll start a black cherry cutting for you. They taste really good!

Would you start a hen and chicks for me, please?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Sure, book.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Book, may I have some of the cuphea?

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Should anyone have some extra bat face cuphea I would appreciate a start of that and easydirections as to how to root it.

Ann

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'll get you a cutting Ann.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh Kristi...wink wink...bat face!! me too

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

You got it, Randy. Who can live without a bat face in their yard?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL...Right? I'll put it next to the poison arrow flower!

Those long tentacles are the stamens from the flowers. Apparently these were used to make poison blow darts at one time.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Now, that's a cool plant to have. Where on earth did you find that?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I got it from Wayne down the street. Need a cutting?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'd love one! That will be a conversation. Thank you very much. Shade or sun?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have it in shade pretty much, but it does get an hour or so of afternoon sun. It's at the base of the west end bamboo ladder ..that would be the ladder adjacent to the seating area and pond.
Got ya down for poison arrow.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

oooohhhhh I wanna poison arrow plant, puleeeeeze.

Anne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

One poison arrow for Anne!

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

kewl.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Knolan may I cancel the Bat Faced Cuphea and substitute the "Miss Priss" variety? I couldn't resist a sale of them and went ahead and bought. However, I couldn't find a picture of the Miss Priss but am sure I'd love it. And I promise to stay out of garden centers till July. (actually I need some potting soil) I went on a plant buying spree. Won't be able to eat for 2 weeks but who needs to eat when there are plants to go into the ground. lol Needed to diet anyway. lol

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, that would be a hard promise for me to keep, staying out of a garden center until July.

You'll love 'Miss Priss'....she's a pink cuphea with a purple center, growth is identical to 'Bat Face'. And an even bigger plus, 3 of the cuttings I have started have already taken root. One is promised to you!

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Kristi, can I have the leftover Batface? Wouldn't want it to think it wasn't wanted in it's young age. lol

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Gotcha down, Smockette.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh my goodness. Went to the Hibiscus show and sale in Bellaire this afternoon. Spent over $100.00. Now I have to go by pots. Tee hee, like this is a problem. lol

Anne

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Ooohh.....did they have all of those pretty Bahama Bay hibbies?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I saw soooo many varieties that I just couldn't tell you if they did or didn't (though that does sound familiar) I bought 8 and got 2 free when I joined the AHS and my sister got 11. We just had a blast.

rj - Are you certain of your Colocasia ID? I think it is an Alocasia - possibly sanderiana aka amazonica. I have Colocasia jensii Black Indian Princess' aka 'Illustris' and it is not the same - with soft leaves, instead of the shiny, wavy leaves you show. If I have been wrong all this time, please let me know. Could be.
I have Alocasia 'Mark Campbell' and A 'Frydek' and they show the same strong veination and shape of your plant. This photo shows Colocasia jensii (Illustris).

I have gotten all the cuttings started. If there's anything else someone may want, speak up in the next few days so they will have time to get established. Whatever doesn't take out of this go around, I'll try again. If, for some reason, I just can't get some of these to take at all, I'll let ya'll know.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I keep fogetting to mention, Fly_Girl is sending me with 10 Sweet Autumn Clematis for the swap. She can't make it but has these to share. I want one, so there is 9 up for grabs. Speak up!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Whew! I have been labeling and planting all night long.

I just edited my list. There are some new things. I have added 4 'Pride of Hankins' Hibiscus. They were cuttings I made a few weeks ago and wasn't sure if they would take but, they're sprouting. I've also added 1 (only 1) pink jasmine and 3 knockout roses. These were all things I wasn't sure about. In addition, I have more purple porterweed cuttings that I started and it looks like my pink porterweed is large enough that I can start some cuttings if anyone is interested.

Just FYI, on labeling....Fly_Girl had an excellent suggestion. Instead of buying those expensive markers that are 20 for $5, get a cheap, plastic mini-blind and cut your own markers. Saved me a lot of $$$! I've got over 80 cuttings trying to turn themselves into wonderful plants. I' marking the plant name, the date it was planted and who it is for as well as my name on the back in case you have any troubles or questions.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Are you kidding? I have no clue, I searched pictures and textures and that's the name that matched closest to texture and shape.. I usually call it "that striped colocasia! I think the original came from Another place in time.. Maybe you can solve the identity when your here? ..ooh...I Looked at the alocasias and didn't see anything to resemble..do you have picts? I'm going to mark it back to striped exotic EE that won't stop putting out pups.
http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/viewimage.php?did=21859

The way I understand it ...is that Alocasias go right from stem to ear and point up., Collocasias, hang down from them stem.
See how the stem and the leaf point up?
http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/viewimage.php?did=18925

and Collocasias, the leaf points down
http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/viewimage.php?did=17326

The ones in the picture point down. Now...having said that...they are probably neither..LOL...

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

One for me, that leaves 8.
I have scads of gingers that I got in MS fr Gaylams. Anyone have some partial shade that needs something that smells WOOOOONDERFUL????????????

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Sign me up, Smockette! I have a nice shaded area that I'm trying to fill with gingers. Fragrant ones are desired!

Got you down for the sweet autumn clematis.

Fly needs to pose her head in here and see if there's anything she might like that I can take back to her.

Also, one of my GF's who doesn't have a pc, is probably coming with me and she's bringing a load. I think I've already told ya'll that. She hasn't looked at the lists yet but I'm going to tell her to this week. Honestly, I'm starting to worry how I'm going to fit everything in the car.

Randy, did you see the food sign up? Should we still bring food? Will you have an area large enough? Do you need some of us to pitch in and bring tables?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

rj - What do you think?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

CJ, I am waiting for you to get this straight so I can say 'Can I have one of each?' lol
I'm building a mandatory retention pond in my yard in self defense & am wanting any kind of 'EE' (used loosely) to go around it.
By the way, I got some BnB salvia that is going great guns for me! Amazing!!!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Smockette - Do you want any mickey mouse taro - Xanthosoma atrovirens? I have some extra, and I have been killing off (well, trying to) the Colocasia jensii 'Black Indian Princess' popups. I'll save them for you if you want them.....And I have some Frydek pups. But I'm not going to this swap, so you'll have to come and get them.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

CJ - Yes, ma'am! I'm going up to City_Sylvia's Fri to help with her irrigation system b4 her next surgery but I will be back in town (Magnolia) Sunday nite. I'd be glad to come get them anytime you say, especially since you are so far..... across 2978! lol
