College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

In our "normal" summer months, I put small holes at the bottom place them at the base of my fruit trees then fill them up with water in the cool of the evening. It's my own cheap drip system

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

ah, yes, Anne - our "normal" summer months... what a memory! It's thundering and raining here on the sw corner of loop 610 again. Looks like we're in for another new normal for July! Good idea to use a bucket for irrigation. Carol - hope you found a restaurant - I don't know much about the Heights for food.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

been dark and thundering here all day, but no rain. I think it's going to take a shortcut around us. Must be in a hurry to get to Houston. lol

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Randy, the Pyrex casserole dish with blue lid is mine. Also, a big 'bucket' with handle & lid that had the cabbage salad in it ,as well as the wine tasting glasses are all mine.
This was one of the cases where I thought Painter got them & he thought I got them.
Also, unless Kristi is coming up, I could take the wine bottles to the 'Bottle Tree' owner, Fly-girl. Since she lives in the Woodlands & I live across the hiway fr there, it would be no problem at all.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

That would be great, Smockette. I'd really appreciate it and I know she would too.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Randy and Smockette, I just talked to Fly and she has enough bottles for the bottle tree now. Guess you can throw them away unless someone else wants them. Thanks for saving them anyway!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I will take the wine bottles. I have a fun idea for them. Smockette if you don't keep the one you bought I would like it to put something decorative in and sit in my kitchen. I don't drink wine I only whine. I would also love a colbalt blue vodka bottle or more than one. My sons friend devours the stuff but I guess he is too gone to remember to save the bottle.

My DDIL is a bartender till dec. when she graduates as an X_ray tech. But they are not allowed to bring home any bottles, they must be counted by the owners. Then??

Dallas, TX

Sandy that is some expensive vodka in that blue bottle, maybe he has more than one usage for it. I just received this email today. lol

Who knew?

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the
bandage with vodka. The
solvent dissolves adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers,
fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the
caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The
alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses
with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The
alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with
vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the
alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade
and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush,
and then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an
astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of
shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes
toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy
hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle and spray
bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a
Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy,
refreshable ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly
packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal
the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days.
Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the
tincture to aches and pains.

11. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka
on your chest and back as a liniment.

12. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

13. Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish
sting.

14. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy
to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

15. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow
your gums to absorb
some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

And silly me. I've only been drinking the stuff!

Sylvia

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

What a waste of money. Seems like alcohol would do the same thing?? I didn't know it was expensive. He use to drink one a day.

I will tell him these uses and maybe not so much will go in him.

Everyone also pray for the things that have been happening at a few airports. Houston and washington DC are 2 of them. I don't remember which one he said I would arrive. I am not afraid but it makes for a miserable bunch of stuff to go through just to get on a plane. My DB told me the other day they are going to stop taking peoples lighters as they get well into 5 or more digits of them. I know it was over 20,000 maybe 200,000 a day or a week? not sure. But they made smockette throw away an unopened can of dr. pepper. I think a lighter is more dangerous. I guess dr.pepper you could pour on someone and sticky them to death? LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay Smockette...I think the cabbage salad is still in that bucket,
Got the casorel dish cleanned, and the wine tasting glasses, although Brian has taken a fancy to them.
So..let me know...

Re the Security at U.S. airports, -- no comment

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Randy tell Brian that I will ck in Dallas when I go next month for the TNLA show. If I can get some more, I'll let him have those.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

Nancy, we did find a restaurant, the Spanish Flower, on North Main. The name, Berry Hill, sounded unique, but dh picked Mexican food as he had eaten there years ago, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Kerrville, TX(Zone 8a)

AuntAnne,
Those cat litter buckets are great, and we do have a collection of those. My Ragdoll, Mr. Peepers (17 yrs.) appreciates them, too. :)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Speaking of airport security, can I crochet on a plane?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9b)

Can you crochet on a plane? I won't even tempt to guess. The rules don't make sense to me anymore. They broke off the 1 " inch nail file on my nail clipper. When's the last time someone threatened another with the 1" nail file on a nail clipper. You'd think there'd be more concern about the guy with the lighter, ball point pen, lazer pointer, or stainless utensils they hand you in first class. With this logic, knitting needles and crochet needles are probably allowed - just be sure to leave your mail clipper at home. I give up.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

OMG! I can't believe they did that! So, your nail file has gone to clipper heaven, heh? Well, I'm hesitant to take my crochet needle because it's 'the one' and is most special to me. It fits perfectly in my fingers and has just the right amount of wear and tear on it. It would take years to get another 'g' hook just right like that again.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Yes you can knit and crochet on a plane. I don't recall if I had scissors with em or not. I had enough needles to do damage if I wanted to though, and the needles were much longer than one inch files, how silly... I was worried so I just brought one project, turned out ok.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

ps... what is a DB?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I just flew about 2 weeks ago on SW and a lady in front of me was knitting.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I think there are specific knitting needles you can use, though - very large ones. There was a lady knitting when I flew to England recently, and the needles were at least 1/2" around.

I would call the airline or something first Knolan. Don't risk The One True Knitting Needle.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Just lost everything I typed. Phoey! Not doing it again. I have a severe migraine and 1 pill left and no insurance. That is heck.
Better just go to bed and see if 2 vicodin will knock me out. If I take it now won't have one tomorrow. And they usually last 3 days.

DB means dear brother.

Call the airport no sense losing you crochet hook and from what I hear from a friend who flies all the time they change the rules alot.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the info. guys.

Are any of you having trouble with DG tonight? It's taken me over an hour to get this thread open and I'm having trouble opening dmail as well. shut my whole system down several times and did pc maintenance. I'm not having trouble with any other websites.

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

I'm not having issues at all, if you are on high speed though comcast is switching over and there are citywide gliches off and on....

I did knit and crochet on an airplane in February... Although, I didn't pack my favorite needles for the plane just in case, I went to wallyworld and got some cheapo's so if they did get takin away it wouldn't be sentimental at all ( I have needles from my deceased grandmothers )...

I'm on my computer tonight instead of the dslite so I can really surf and write back for real. The girls went to visit their momma tonight, so I get a break, I miss them. If anyone knows any child psychologist's who'd be willing to trade for massage please let me know. A certain someone is have serious separation anxieties and acting like there are ghosts in the house, this is far from normal 'invisible friends'.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Are we talking Drop Dead Fred type Invisible Friends?

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

No like talking to mommy and daddy when they aren't around because she misses them. Jumping at the window everytime a car goes by to see if its them... I think one of them told her they would come visit..I've told them not to lie to her anymore... It gets rough though, she is starting to really act out.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

That's great, UT.

Actually, Manic, these 'thoughts' are very common for the age. They may seem totally 'out there' to you or I, but it's a fairly common occurrence amongst children her age. Especially with what she is going through right now. There's bound to be lot's of play on words and dramatics. My own daughter went from LOVING ET....as in the Extra Terrestrial...and having him as an imaginary friend for over a year to being suddenly terrified of him, any commercial that had him in it and Reeses Pieces. Freaked me out when it happened. I couldn't understand how she adored him one day and was terrified of him the next. TWO years later, when she was five, we got to the bottom of it. A tree branch 'shadow' in her window looked like him but was distorted and it scared her to death. She's 12 now and still terrified of ET. If you look back way deep in your childhood, there's probably something that scared you deeply as well. Just know that this is pretty normal behavior, regardless of the circumstances, and do your best to stop those fears for her. Spank the ghosts out loud, tell them to stop scaring her and to go away or you will send them to 'Pluto' or time out.....really yell at them like you are an authority figure and send them there. She'll feel like you're in control and you have the best on whatever it is that is scaring her. She'll feel safe and everything will be alright. You might have a tough time after she comes back from this visit. She's going to be missing mommy. Give her lots of love and let her know that mom loves her very much. So does Aunt Lisa. Roll with it and things will be okay. You're doing a great job.....we could all tell Saturday. If you need some help, we're here.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Just read your last post and that's a little different. I think the best thing you can do is let her know that mom and dad love her very much but right now, Aunt Lisa is here to love and play with while they get their work done. Don't give a timeline. Like I said, it's going to be really hard when she comes back from this visit. She's going to miss them ten times more. Tickle her, play with her, feed her fun foods (make animals out of fruit and such). Make it fun to be with you. She's so young that eventually, she'll get used to that and mom and dad will be in the back of her head.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I used to take a slice of apple and carve it into a heart for my daughter. She used to ask for it well up into her teens. Red apple of course

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

wow, That was great validation, I have told her those things... Haven't quite spanked the ghosts yet, because she isn't telling me there are ghosts there, she is just acting like it (i had a whole bunch of invisible friends when i was a kid, so that would be normal).
They now know about the kitten though, When I took care of my other niece when she was little I told her that cats and dogs eat monsters and bugs- so we have no reason to fear if one of them is around and is part of our family house. Hopefully that will help some...
I'll admit( I still like them), my mom used to make me peanut butter smiles and hearts for breakfast (crescent moon turned sideways=smile); I really like that idea. I knew there would be somethings that were different with them then when I've cared for kids before , its just overwhelming sometimes because I was married before and now I'm by myself with them and they have been through soo much. Thank Ya'll for the support, it means alot.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

My son and now DGDs love pancakes with smiley faces. Just drip the eyes in the hot skillet then make the mouth. Brown a little then pour the panke over top making sure the pieces in the skillet don't slide. Brings a smile everytime. My son still likes them because of the TLC that goes into them. They are never too old to spoil.

I also read someone uses an air spray and calls it a ghost repellent. My girls know about Jesus and how he protects them all the time.

It is amazing how hard it really is to think on their level. But if you watch them they will give you clues as to what will work. I always have to remind myself to stop thinking like an adult. Not easy. Just remember how you were with your imaginary friends, maybe help her have one that is strong and beats up on any ghost that comes around. There are so many good ways people have shared.

I know there is a family counseling center in baytown that works on a sliding scale. I am not sure where you find them. try calling some adult therapists in your area and see if they know or maybe the chaplin at a hospital or even some churches.

Hope this helps.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey guys! GREAT NEWS!!!! Plantlady (Ann) has been transferred to a rehab hospital and is now eating regular food.

Here's her information, in case ya'll want to wish her well:

Triumph Hospital - Town and Country. Her direct line is 713-932-2908 and she’s in room 308

I'll bet she can't wait to get home.

Missouri City, TX

Pancakes are fun - you can make Mickey Mouse ones, too. just pour small amounts for the ears. Lots of shapes are possible. And you can add fruit, too. I remember mom putting in blueberry smiles, strawberry noses, etc.

Glad you suggested that, Sandi.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't have time to read all the posts...maybe someone has suggested this...but unless one is an athiest, what is wrong with saying the angels are "camped" around and will protect against any night-time "boogers"?? It worked for me!

Connie

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That's excellent news, Kristi! Thanks for keeping us informed on Ann's progress. :-)

Houston, TX(Zone 10a)

Yay Ann being out and eating real food again!

We do have our gaurdian angels around also. I guess I was unclear, she hasn't said anything about ghosts, that would be simple... She is ACTING like her parents are ghosts and still there with her. Like she'll look to her right (where noone is) and then look back at me and say, my mommy said i have to go potty now... I'll tell her, if you need to go potty, then go. Not really sure what to do about the other, trying to just let it slide for now. Although with both parents being alive, it seems wierd that she is acting like they are dead and following her around. Reminds me of an old sg1 episode where a guy got left on a planet alone and he imagined his fiance was there with him the whole time... She actually showed up one day there looking for him and he was like who is this old lady, my katherine is only 20 something....he had been there for like 70 years... sigh se la vie'

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic....this will probably be short lived. She's grapsing on to what she misses. Once she gets into a good routine, this will pass. Same bed time, same wake up time, same reading time, etc. every day. Once she gets used to a schedule it will reassure her and give her some stability. You're doing great!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Maybe wishful thinking that mommy is there helping her.
I think it is great she used it to go potty. Some really affected kids revert back to going in their pants. She may be a little shy in telling you she has to go.

Yeah glad Ann is doing so well.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Manic - you should post and would be most welcome over on the 'parenting' forum. You'll get a lot of great advice from folks who are going through exactly what you are right now. It's worth a shot! Personally, I'd love to have you over for a dinner and play date. My daugher is so good with children....she amazes me. Let's dmail. I'm leaving tomorrow and will be back in a week. Let's talk then. Bless you and all your efforts.
