Here is Fujishibori seedling, thanks Emma!
Morning Glories 2007
Ron, when I get back to my main computer I'll submit the photos. I've been to the cotyledon heaven on Kyushu too. Interesting irony in the attention to detail and lack thereof! I've documented, in my journal, the cotyledons of all the plants I'm growing this year in an attempt to see for myself any trends or uniqueness. I have found that I can determine many of the mutations, and some of the other genetic factors from the cotyledons.....but individual strains is a bit ambitious for me!
Dee, the white ribbon is fascinating. I'd also be interested to see the leaves more closely. Some of the factors involved in splitting of flowers also evidence themselves in the leaves....
Arlan
Great mg farm Joseph.
I'm real envious of all those blooms.
A.
Gourd, the cotyledons contorted in this fashion are representative of the maple-willow mutation, which , as you are finding out, produces the willow leaf. The flower will be diced in a fashion the Japanese say resembles the dianthus flower. The flowers are usually sterile. These systems also very often carry the duplicate gene which doubles the flower. Looks like you have a great batch of seeds!
If any of them produce more normal looking cotyledons, leaves and flowers......save the seed as they could carry these traits and show up again in the next generation.
...edited to add that upon a second look...I think this plant may also have the delicate gene which changes the willow leaf to a thread leaf...much narrower....really cool!
Have fun! - Arlan

Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing flowers here. Here is another with the more normal cotyledons from Komeri's Blue Asagao (four seeds germinated) one still has not.
Arlan, so this one is the one I should save seeds from? This is a photo from about 2 days ago and the leaves are now up, they are trilobed. Will take another photo.
For us beginners in the group:
Is there some source available which lists and/or describes the various genotypes/mutations/crosses within the Ipomoea genus, perhaps enumerating which varities have which ones? I am nowhere near the level of sophistication where I would be able to selectively breed flowers for specific traits, but with the truly mind-boggling variety in colors, patterns, leaves, vine characteristics, growth patterns, and everything else, I am curious as to just how many different recognized traits are out there, to be mixed and matched between cultivars.
Thanks!

colderwild,
go to this site.. it helps alot.. also, I finally printed each page so that I could make sense of what everyone was talking about.
THANK you to everyone (Ron and Emma) that posted this site.

Antoinette,
LOVE your cotyledons from Komeri's 'Blue Asagao', I have seeds 'Ao Asagao', wonder if they are they same....I'll need to start these for sure as this looks like a very interesting vine.
Dee, LOVE the White Ribbon JMG -
Oh, and your comment
'I can`t believe I`m still looking and germinating JMG seeds'
made me laugh. You should see my collection of seeds *ha*. . .
Welcome to 'Morning Glory Madness'!
Way to go Joseph on over-wintering your Hewittia malabarica.

I know I'm probably out of my league here but this is the first year I've attempted MGs - or any plant from seed. Started my MG seeds at the beginning of March and have been continuously starting new ones since. Had some trellis issues, bug issues, drainage issues, but just keeping growing them and setting them in the ground. They're climbing nicely now. This was my first bloom the other day!! It's Blue Star. Have yet to see any Heavenly Blue flower yet (mixed them in the same bed). I'm pretty excited. Anyone know why this bloom and the two since have stayed open all day? Aren't they supposed to open, then close up and reopen? Mine bloom, stay open ALL day, then drop a day or two later.
Hi Bunsengirl and welcome to this forum. Your flower you posted here looks like Heavenly Blue to me and maybe you are waiting on blue star to bloom.

good luck and happy gardening
Emma, yes the MG thing has got me going. Today I germinated 12 new ones to go with the other 350 plus that I have going. TTYL

Hi Bunsengirl,
I don't why they might stay open all day, but I've have the same thing happen with some of mine on a couple of cooler, overcast days.
Here's my first bloom of solid Chocolate Silk--seeds from one of Emma's ebay auctions. The edges weren't really straight, there was more of the petal or sepal curled under. I really like the color on this one!

HI bunsengirl. . .
Welcome to the Morning Glory Forum. You will learn more than you will ever need to know if you can keep up with all of these Threads. LOTS of great information, and so many folks eager to help you with any questions.
Your first Bloom is a pretty one, however, your Bloom looks like Heavenly Blue to me. Blue Star is much a much lighter 'Sky-Blue' Color with a very definite *star*.
Here is a photo of 'Blue Star'

I haven't grown Blue Star in a while, but it continues to remain one of my favorites. We are in a similar climate and last year my Heavenly Blue Blooms did remain open most of the day. Not sure how they bloom in other climates, but maybe others will give you their experiences. When the weather starts to cool down at the end of the year, my Heavenly Blue Blooms stayed open all day and into the night. Also, they would change colors turning to a Lavender color at the end of the day with a Bright Lavender Star. STUNNING!
Here is one of my photos from last year of Heavenly Blue.

Guess Dee, Mark and I were posting at the same time *-*
Mark, You are right, the color on the SOLID CHOCOLATE is very pretty. It continues to remain True. Sometimes my blooms would look the shape as what you have posted, but they will all not be like that.
Dee,
You are really getting into germinating your seeds. I have always germinated MG's all throughout the growing season. Last two years I've grown between 700 to 900 vines. Ran my silly legs off taking care of all of them too. . .But such fun!
Emma
Did we have a vote for Karen to handle the 2007 Morning Glory Threads?
I'll go ahead and start a new Thread as we now have over 100 posts on this Thread.
Karen, I am assuming you want to keep up with the 2007 Morning Glory Threads. If you need me to help, that isn't a problem - I just can't do it right now.
Here we go to . . .

Gardener2005-Karen have you germinated any of the Japanese Special Mix seeds you received from our trade? I germinated two packs and they are all showing lots of different distinguishing characteristics. Guys, notice the strange looking leaves on this one and it even has a double point at the end of one of the leaves. TTYL
