Gourd, what is that you have it growing on?

Mesilla Park, NM

Thanks Ron, I'll go change that.

speckledpig,
Been using the green bamboo sticks, make teepees out of them (some have the four foot, some have the two footers)
I really like your name..!!!

Hi everyone and Happy Spring!
I am new to this forum and to planting different kinds of seeds as opposed to buying plants.
I have two different types of Morning Glory seeds from Nichols Garden Nursery with instructions to "chip" seeds and soak for 24 hours.
What and how do you "chip" seeds? I live in Austin Texas, zone 8 and wondered if I can plant them now?
Thanks for any help.

I missed their initial opening, but when I had two picotee blooms opening at the same time, on a day off when I wasn't going to need my notebook for a while, I set up the time-lapse rig to capture them in action. I set up in a hurry, so the framing is a bit off, but I think you get the general idea.

Wow! I loved it. That vine growing reminds me of a cowboy with a lasso. It is trying to "lasso" the structure to get growing! This reminds me of how very alive plants are and the flowers are beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

THat was great, it looks like they are dancing in South America. that is called the "Queka" hopefully I spelled it right, where they take a hanky and swing it around like that.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I didn`t get any sound but some Latin music would go very well with it!

This chocolate color Sunsmile forced me to post the picture.

I`m innocent here. :)

That time lapse photography clip was out of this WORLD! Wow!!

How did you do that?

Joseph

Great video! I liked it a lot. I'll watch it again to see exactly the sequence of the flower closing... nice work.

Karen, did you purchase the Chocolate Sunsmile seed this year? I've got one plant a few weeks behind yours. I'm hoping mine is similar to yours!

Arlan

This came out a pack of mixed Sunsmile. I won some brown Sunsmile seeds but they are still babies right now.

Karen, at the end of the season, I'd like to compare the "creepers" we are growing and exchange some seed.... I'm on a "creeper" mission! - Arlan

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Arlen,
Knowing you like 'Creepers', look at this beauty. I bought actual plants yesterday in Nacogdoches [another Master Gardening venture]. The lady at the nursery has been growing these for SEVEN YEARS and they all remain True as she grows no other I. nils.

The *Star* is very unusual for a Creeper.

Emma, I love it! I must say, I have not seen that in a creeper either. You know what my next question is!!!

I've got your red Kawaii growing now, but it hasn't started blooming yet.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

The purple creeper is beautiful! Yes, It would be good to compare the flowers and trade out seeds later on. That is a great idea.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Arlan & Karen . . .

Isn't that a beauty!

Of course you can have seeds *-*

Curious to see what the Kawaii does its 2nd year.
Also, I really do like the leaves on the Kawaii too.
Here is one of last years photos that has a pretty good view of the leaves.

That`s lovely and unique looking, Emma. The leaves are really neat on that one.

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

The seedling I'm raising this year from your Kawaii plant, Emma, has leaves just like it. Here is another Kawaii plant from another seed source that is literally covered in flower buds. It goes in the ground this week end. I counted at least 13 flower buds on it and it is still in the 16 oz cup.

...doesn't the cane stake give a Japanese flair to the common American Ipomoea hederacea!

Thanks Karen - I did enjoy those creepers.

Arlan, good grief, what are you feeding your babies?

What do you call this type of leaf on the Kawaii?

Emma

Here is the first JMG flowering for me. The plant is from a seed I got on ebay. I like it, the rays are pronounced / raised on the corolla, nice effect.

Very Pretty Joseph. . .

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

Emma, I have had very good results this year with the medium I'm growing my seedlings in. It must have a good blend of nutrients in it as I have not fed the plants at all.....

The term I've seen for the leaf type found on Kawaii, with the extremely long center lobe and small, narrow single side lobes is translated from Japanese (electronically!) as "hoe", referring to a shovel I believe. ( ...got to be careful here or the media may kick me off the air!) When this same leaf has two narrow side lobes on either side, it is referred to as a dragonfly leaf. Both are derivitives of a single recessive gene called dragonfly; dg. It is one of the complex of genes found in most large flowered JMGs.

Joseph, I really like that somber purple. Curious as to what it was sold as....as in variety name! ...it may be growing (hopefully) in my garden too!

Arlan

Hi Arlan,

It was from an unknown mix. You know, the flower has grown on me too, at first I was not impressed but then the last flower opened which is in the photograph and I noticed the details. The mites got to the leaves and stunted it. Maybe with it being outside it will make more vine and leaves and flowers. So far it has dropped every spent flower. I hope it does make seeds, I will let you know of successes.

Joseph

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

I know I called it a somber purple earlier, but when I looked at it again, I'm thinking more blue than purple!.. - Arlan

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Arlan,
Thanks for the leaf explanation.
Interesting . . .

Gerris 2,I think the color of your flower is interesting. I`d like to see if the raised "ribs" on the corolla repeat in the other blooms. I think that is neat.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

The threads devoted to Morning Glories started as a thread in the Vines and Climbers forum where everyone could post information and photos devoted to various Morning Glories and these early threads were the forerunner to the forum devoted exclusively to MG's...and I was helping to keep the main thread going for awhile, but I wasn't sure that the yearly MG thread was continuing to serve a specific and/or clearly defined purpose once the forum devoted to all aspects of MG's was firmly established...
I thought about suggesting that it be devoted to photos >a quasi-yearbook of sorts with other questions related to the 'hows' and 'whys' of things kept to a minimum and/or befittingly better addressed in other threads,so I thought it might just be better to let it 'ride' and see what develops...but if someone wants to continue a series of threads devoted to MG's prefaced by the current year...you're certainly free to do so...

Karen - this one
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/gardener2005_1178638954_191.jpg
has an almost 'iris' look to it...has it produced any other flowers like this one(?)...

Arlan - I really like this view
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/atenkley_1178722957_748.jpg
...I wonder what a back upward view of the corolla would look like on a flaked like that...

Emma - this one
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/EmmaGrace_1178909352_671.jpg
has the ray along the primary and secondary folds...I like it...

NIce 'early birds'...

Ron, you mean like this? http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/si/126627/ .... I took this one the same time as the original one.

All the photo documentation of this plant can be found here: http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/viewentry/125896/

Ron, The bloom repeated with two more blooms split three ways. I`m going to let it bloom once more just for more pictures and then I`m going to tie blooms to give this one another try.

I always thought of the current year thread as a way for all DGers to share the newest most exiting new blooms of the current season. As far as any information or descriptions and explanations I`m a blabbermouth when it comes to my garden so keeping anything to a minimum will take some work. :)

Perhaps new discussions can be discovered in the spontaneity of a picture thread. As Ron said let it ride. When you go for a ride in the car you don`t always have to know what you will do or where you will go. It is plain fun when you see a spot of color beside the road and stop to get a closer look.

If I get something interesting I`ll start a new one or someone else can be be free to continue by starting a new morning glories 2007 thread. This is everyone`s garden here the way I see it. :)

P.S. - if you don't see me posting 'as usual'...it means my computer isn't stabilized yet...I'm working on it...

Here is a picture of my little seedling farm. It is fun watching them grow out!

PS I shall refrain from posting cotyledon images unless you really wanna see 'em.

Hey Guys, I`m just loving all the University Mixes, Unknown Mixes, and MG Festival blooms that`s being shown. Later this year I will aggressively seek to obtain more of these unique seeds as they become availble. Last year I did not think that the free sample seeds would produce anything special so throw that thinking out the window and will collect as many as possible.

This is called white ribbon MG. TTYL

Joseph - I certainly don't mind cotyledon photos...especially of anything with an unusual shape, size or coloration...

I made my way to one of the sections of Kyushu where they have a gazillion cotyledon photos that basically looked the same to me...but they have painstakingly notated every possible visually observable difference and claim to be able to accurately determine every strain by the cotyledon characteristics alone...maybe(?!)...
it's unusual to see such incredible attention to detail on many aspects and yet they have some photos posted that are blatantly the wrong species...I'm not sure what to make of it...

Dee - post the sepals of that white one if you can...it looks most likely to be Ipomoea nil but..(??)...

Keep the unusual types from Japan flowing...

TTY,...

Ron

Here are seedlings of a MG I bought from Chilterns Seeds that were identified as Ipomoea tricolor 'Wetterleuchten'. The seeds didn't look like tricolor seeds but resembled purpurea shaped seeds to me. I recall tricolor cotyledons to have more narrow seed leaves, yes?
