Damping off - Cucumbers

Not very good

Champaign, IL(Zone 5b)

*sigh* Well, at least I have two broccoli....how come they didn't eat the tomatoes or peppers?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

There are few critters that will eat tomato vines. Peppers are not too attractive either. Blood meal is an excellent rabbit/deer deterrent. just keep a little sprinkled around your plants. have to renew it with each rain.

What's blood meal? is it as icky as it sounds? ;)

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

It s dry and stinks, Actually is dried blood. Sold as a fertilizer for the "organic" folks. Very expensive to use as a fertilizer, but a little goes a long way as a herbivore deterrent.

I had a feeling it might be something like that. Yuck....What about coffee cans with the bottoms removed to put around the plants? I've honestly never had this happen in my garden...they've always attacke my flowers before...

Bremerton, WA(Zone 8b)

Blood meal isn't really all that bad, roses LOVE it. It looks like instant coffee or the dry grounds and doesn't smell unless you get close. It is high in nitrogen and is acidic, which has been a big help in my alkaline soil.

Urine (eew) works too, but you have to dilute it to avoid harming the plants. Most all small mammals will avoid "marked territory".

The wildlife in my area would pick up and play with coffee cans ;)

LOL...I'm just picturing rabbits and squirrels playing soccer in your garden with coffee cans....and stopping for cabbage breaks. A lot of people around here I've noticed do the coffee can thing. Like I said before, I've never had anything eat stuff outta my garden before(except insects). I may try the bloodmeal...I agree urine is a little gross...especially if you have to water it down.

I'm still a little sad about losing my cabbage and broccoli...but I still have quite a few broccoli seeds that I was planning to use for a fall batch....but no cabbage this year. :( Those were the two things I was excited to have, because I've never planted them before. Dang rabbits...

Thanks guys for the help, and I'll keep you posted on the last remaining broccoli.
