Hi RE: Buddleia Bicolor

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi to everyone!
formidable,
I just bought a Budd that looks very similar to the bi-colored. This one is called Rainbow. It was $5.99 (US of course). If you get a free brochure you will have a $20 coupon for $20 off order of $40 or more.... My whole order was 49 with the 20 off, and shiping was a flat 7.75.
DH wanted a few of the plants and said to fill out the form and send it in.......(yeah, honey, twist my arm).

Hope you get one! They are very easy to grow.. I never met a Buddleia that I didn't love!

Deb

Wallaby1 - Your Acacia dealbata is gorgeous! How tall does it get? Very attractive tree, indeed!

My Buddleias are growing fast and getting big. Don't think I have room for another one, but if I did, the Rainbow variety is a must have over the others. Very lovely flowers. Wished I had seen that one first. ☺

Hi Debnes just been on the link its the same plant as its says the botanical name is buddleia bicolor. I love the photo. Wow you got some bargains. I wonder if plants ship well to the UK? What else did you get? I am dying to know. LOL.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Boy! I got a few goodies coming. When I posted that formidable, I didn't realize that they don't have UK in the order form. I might have to get some cuttings from new growth later on and try to root some for you.

This is what I ordered:
4 Buddleia bush collection
Meadowsweet (3)
Blue Mist Flower (1)
Scarlet Bee Balm (2)
Cardinal Flower (3)
Rainbow Buddleia (1)
Rudbeckia Green Wzard (3)
Triteleid Royal Blue (20)

Will let you know when I get them.

ooooooooooooooooooooooo green wizard are lovely Deb....................

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

becky, mine must be 35' tall now, but I read a few years ago someone had one 70' tall, they bought the house because of it! Mine has done well form about 10" tall in early 1999!

I have a robust pink buddleja too, it was with the same package and does grow big but I keep it cut back. It had dozens of butterflies on it last year, they liked the bicolor too. I got my lot cheap, half price, bare root but only ended up with two but they are good ones! Also grew Royal Red and Black Knight from cuttings, they have been behind a tree and not doing as well as they could, I moved one and need to do the other. Got a variegated one too, Harlequin, it has some reverted to green but the flowers are great so I leave it on.

Mark, I don't think your post was there last night when I posted! It wasn't behaving, some threads weren't loading the newest posts for the last 2 weeks unless refreshed. Green Wizard is available here.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yesssssssssssssssssssss i have loads of green wizard in the garden that i grew from seed!!

Deb
was on lunch break. Lovely selection of flowers. I especially love the rudbeckia!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Formidable, and all ...
Yeah, the Green Wiz Rudbeckia was one DH wanted, lol...Also the 4 Bush collection and Meadowsweet. I'm glad he is involved, even if it is only paying for plants and enjoying the gardens.

Cool Mark you have it!!

Wow Wallaby!!! 35', that's HUGE!!

Deb

Deb I took that shot from an upstairs window, the trellis behind is over 8' tall! The main trunk is leaning away from the conker tree, but there is another smaller branch going the other way to balance it a little.

It fits in the spot well, imagine it when it gets twice that height!

Getting your man involved in gardening is a great idea!

If I'm not mistaken, wallaby.. most Buddleias have yellow centers. The Bi-color has lilac and bright pink petals on wee flowers, also with yellow centers...
I love your Butterfly pictures!!
See the yellow centers in this White Profussion?>

I think you are right Deb., although some have much darker eyes. Mine is closer to Nanho Blue, which is the one I think I found before, the wide habit and silvery leaves match too. It does have an orange eye with a yellow edging, as far as I can see.

Victor's B. bicolor did seem so much like mine, but that only shows the top, which would be darker when not fully open. The pictures I am seeing of B bicolor show a different flower form and larger leaves, plus of course the colour, which is difficult often to gauge in pics unless you know it matches your own!

Plus the fact that J Parkers are selling it, and that's where mine came from. Over the years I have had their catalogue I have seen very little change in their product range, but they do have the occasional new plant. It's a wonder they still send me one, the last twice I bought from them I had lots of problems, got a voucher first time, second time I just couldn't be bothered. I paid a lot of money for a Zantedeschia Schwarzwalder (which took a lot of doing!) and 3 Z albomaculata, only one Z maculata grew, the others were like cork. That was only one of the many disasters from them, temptation won't get me again!

I wish we had Monarchs here, but we do have other pretty ones!

This is a snooty butterfly, it has it's nose in the air!

No worries Greg,
Your pics are stunning..

:-)

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi Greg
Kinda glad yours are not bi-color, lovely as they are, as I was hoping for more of a contrast. Wallaby1 I am worried about your review of parkers maybe I should have got my plant off EBAY. Actually got a nice Lantana Camara off there the other day...... think I must hava a thing for multicolored flowers.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Formidable

I wouldnt worry................... mine is coming from J Parkers too.............. and i am not in the slightest bit worried!!!!
Are you getting a free Azalea with your order too???????

Buford, GA(Zone 7b)

Formidable, I have thing for bright multi-colors also, especially toward the tropical side. I came very close yesterday to getting a very bright deep red Buddleia yesterday but ended up with 2 Key Line Coral Bells and a Velvet Night Coral Bell for the color coordination or maybe contrast of. Also a Bachelor's Button (purple), Indigo Spice Salvia, Strawberry Foxglove, Hummingbird plant and a white fragrant clematis, Sorry but I only remember the common name at this point in the evening. Brain dead.
Mr. Crocosmia, not to leave you out, I did plant a good many crocosmia bulbs (lucifer's) today.

Oh boy! Sounds like you bought the Mother Lode, Greg! Do post some photos when they are blooming. I'd love to see your flowers on all the plants you bought! :-) :-) Happy Spring Growing!!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

YAY nice one Greg................................ lets flood the world with crocosmia!!!!!!!!!!!!

Becky, not got your first packet yet??????????????????

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL! Nope, I haven't gotten the seeds yet, Mark. But I've got a bed ready for them. All the seeds that you have sent me have germinated. I'm very impressed. Must be the packaging with the foil. I bought commercially sold seeds for this year (Spring) from a major company here in the USA and they didn't sprout.

Here's a photo for you, Mark! My lone Crocosmia bloomed! I thought I had 2 Crocosmia, but one turned out to be a Freesia. Which blooms bright yellow! The plants look kind of similar until they bloom.

Sorry! Wrong photo! Here's the one I meant to post for you, Mark. And of course it is the most common Crocosmia variety.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Doesnt look like crocosmia to me..........................................LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

It's the Lucifer variety. Should I take a side photo of it for ya? ROTFLOBO!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

That is noooooooooooooooooooooooooo way lucifer...........................................

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Really??? That's what it was labeled when I bought it a year ago. If it's not a Crocosmia, then I have no idea what it really is? Should I post it on the Plant IDing forum????

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

hold on a sec

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

This is a photo of Lucifer.............

Maybe its the angle you took it at............................... but it looks far to dark for lucifer.............. looks more like some kind of lily.

How tall is it Becky????????????????????

Oh wow! Yours is gorgeous!

Well, guess what. I smelled the flower and it was mis-labeled when I bought it. It's a Freesia as well. All this time I thought I had a Lucifer Crocosmia and it was really a Freesia! That kind of blows me away! Can't trust those garden shops!!!!

Thumbnail by beckygardener
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here's the yellow flowering Freesia. No wonder they looked similar. Because they are the same plant! Sheesh! All this time I thought I had 2 Crocosmia and they were instead Freesia! That is toooo funnnnnny!

Well, Mark ...... guess Crocosmia are not easy to get here in Florida. Because in all honesty, that was the only time I ever saw one for sale. (And of course, they were lying about!!! lol)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

LMAO........................... and you thought i didnt know my crocosmia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 LMAO

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww shall i send you some proper lucifer.......................????

Mark

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Does Crocosmia have any kind of scent? These Freesias have a distinct scent which is used in perfumes and shampoos. I actually happen to enjoy the scent, but never really smelled them until just now. Too dog-gone funny!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

The Freesias are quite pretty though Becky...................... I love em but they arent that hardy here!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Actually, Mark, I thought you were pulling my leg when you asked what it was. I figured you were just joking with me. Pardon me for giving YOU a hard time! So glad one of us is a Crocosmia EXPERT! ROTFLMBO!!! Are they bulbs or tubers?
