Hi RE: Buddleia Bicolor

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi Mark
No sign of the buddleia. Now 29 days. Think I will complain see if they will throw in a sweetner. Got my lantana camara off ebay though and it looks promising. Was gardening all day yesterday. My hubby has built me some raised beds and he spent all yesterday filling them with soil. Can't wait to start planting! While he did that I was doing lots of weeding and tidying. My other buddleias are starting to look good. pruned them a couple of weeks ago - starting to bush out a bit.

Hi Mandy

Wow............... yes i would complain too if it took that long to arrive!!
Pleased the Lantana looks promising........... at least something is!!
Oh yes i was gardening too, and painting an outside wall and moving my crocosmia out of the greenhouse, conservatory and pigeon loft.........
Oh lucky you, wish i had room for some raised beds too......... great isnt it when you can start planting into something that is totally new and empty!!
Yes, i just cut all my buddleias back the day before yesterday.......... they are all around 2 feet high now.

Does the name of this forum keep changing or is it just my imagination???????????

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hey Mark
I am off all next week and I want to try out some new nurseries/garden centres. How can I find some good ones near me that I haven't tried. Was looking at Embleys in Preston or Larch Cottage Nurseries in melkinthorpe Cumbria - I fancied a drive out.

Mark, you've got an active imagination... but yes, the name went through some recent changes. To increase search engine hits, "Butterflies and Hummies" was changed to "Birds and Butterflies." That caused a big outcry (in which I participated LOL) from those who felt this would lead to traffic jams on this already busy forum and add to the confusion as to where one should go to discuss gardening for birds (see "Wildlife Gardening" for a lot of good bird threads -- I finally found them there!). So the name was simply rearranged, and "Hummies" was changed to the more grammatical and more searchable "Hummingbirds."

If you're curious, there was quite a thread over in the DG forum about it...

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Larch Cottage is suposed to be a really nice place............ I have had a looksie at their stuff lots of times!!
Or you could go down Cornwall way............... there are some beautiful nurseries down there........ a friend of mine owns one.
www.properplants.com

she has some amazing stuff!!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

AHA...................... I knew i was right...................... I kept thinking, i am sure the name has changed again!!!!
Oh, i will have to have a look at the DG forum and see what went on!! LOL

formidablelady, I have two of the bi color buddds here in New Jersey, got them from Wayside Gardens in the US...they are a little slower growing than my white and deep purple ones.........but..... the hummingbird moth and the hummingbirds as well as the butterflies just love 'em. They are worth the wait, yup did I say they grow slow..LOL

Good luck.....

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Ohhhhhh noooooooooooooooo, my little stick is gonna be a little stick for a long time by the sound of it...................

Thank you for the link Becky!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Thanks Quaqbe do they look as stunning as they do in some of the photos I have seen? Mines on its way I hope from the same place as Mr-Crocosmia so I am expecting a stick too!!!!LOL

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Mandy

Still no sign of your stick arriving???????????????????????????????????

Mark

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi Mark
I emailed them on Saturday no reply! Rang this morning and was told they came on 13/3/07 no reply so card left. Not picked up so sent back. Then she said I know they sometimes don't leave cards. I replied that if I had a carrier like that I would not use again. I have asked for express delivery!!!! Terrible customer service. I wouldn't buy from them again!!!!!!!! On the posative side have planted up some of the raised beds and still need some more plants.......yes.........happy days. When I sit out in the garden it feels like my piece of heaven on earth.........

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Hi Mandy
OMG what sort of a delivery company does that................ that is pathetic. But then again, maybe it wasnt even sent out......... from what i have heard about Parkers, i wouldnt put it past them!! Although, i didnt have a problem, but then again i was in when the carrier came. No, i wont buy from them again either.....
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh good, i bet they are looking good now then...........How many raised beds do you have???? Are you just putting bedding plants in there???
Yessssssssssssssssssssss, i have a bench in my garden, at the top, near the greenhouse, i love to sit up there with a coffee and just sit amongst all the flowers and listen to the birdies singing and watching the bees and butterflies float by.............. isnt nature wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just gotta love it.........

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Thats why I love this forum so much. I think my family thinks I am nuts the way I talk about my plants and care about them as if they were human. They don't really understand the absolute bliss that nature gives me....LOL!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yes, i think we all think like you................ in a way they are kinda human, they start from seed and you grow and care for them as if they were children...............
I feel sorry for people that dont understand the pure bliss of nature............. i think they must walk around with their eyes closed. LOL

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

HI Mark managed to post some pics of my new garden on the design page if you or anyone else wants a peek...http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/712916/

Alrighty. The shipment of Budds came in Saturday, and they looked alright. The Rainbow (Bi-color) is in front...It seems to have broader leaves than the other 3 Budds. Now finding the right place to plant these little wonders.

Yeah they look small, but in no time at all they will fill out.

deb, if you don't mind sharing, where did you buy? I think yours look great, compared to my experiences. I have yet to have a mailorder buddleia survive. I have bought the bicolor twice and it has died twice. Don't remember who from.

I do love this plant. I have white, yellow, pink, rose red, and either nahno blue or black knight. Mine look like they'll be blooming soon. Of all the butterfly attracting plants I have, I believe buddleia is the one that has truly increased butterfly traffic in my garden.

Hi Vossner,
Sure don't mind sharing..Wouldn't it be mean if I were here only to show off? LOL!
Here is the collection of the 4 I bought.. in the pic above>

Here is the Rainbow (Bi-color)>

Seems they are still on sale now too. Only thing is they kept moving my ship date. I only ordered them a month ago, but they had a ship date of 4/2, then 4/11, and 4/26... So I sent an email and asked them, "whats up wit that?" Then I called and they said they ship according to my zone. Long story short, they sent them out that day.

The plants come in some pretty cool little reusable packaging which I am saving to ship plants that I share here with you guys. I am really happy with the order and the good prices, you just may have to stay on top of the order status is all.

Deb, you were just meant to have those plants. Mich Bulb doesn't have a good rating in the GWD, but your pic looks good.

I hope to one day find the bicolor locally.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah Vossner,
I saw the ratings and just stayed on top if it.. I don't mind a challenge if it's something I want bad enough.. Still waiting on 2 Brugs from Parkseed too, then that toothpulling transaction will be over too. Parks was waaaay worse than MIch Bulb.

At last its here my buddlea bicolor or should I say 3 small sticks with the odd leaf. But I still love it. Can't wait till summer............

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Mandy

Yours has 3 sticks??????????????????????
that sucks, mine only had one stick......................
Lucky you

Rochdale, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi Mark
Yes 3 twigs I am doing well. LOL. My buddleia alternafolia still poorly despite lots of water. I will have to cut it back as you said. I think it will hurt me more than the shrub.
By the way put some piccys of my garden on GARDEN DESIGN page under MY NEW GARDEN. Don't know if you like modern gardens or are a traditional garden lover. Have you any pics of your garden?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Does he ever! LOL!

Mandy - Your garden photos are awesome!!!! Very nice design and very well done. Looks like a great deal of work to do all the decks and raised beds and arbors. But boy! does it ever look NICE!!! Thanks for sharing that forum link and all the photos!!! Love the water garden, too!! :-)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Mandy

Right, thats it, i am going to complain to parkers that i only have one twig and you got three..........LOL
Yes, cut it back now Mandy before its too late.................... it will grow like heck after you have done it................. This is the time of year to cut them back!! Really they should be cut back every year........ otherwise they get very very woody at the bottom and look awful.
I have around 6 i think, and i cut them all back in spring!!
Awwwwwwwwwwwww, dont be sad at doing it........... it will afterall be better for the Budd.
I have had a look at the Garden Design.................. I am not really into modern gardens, I am what you call a cottage garden man myself.......... all these deckings and structures to me take up too much of the valuable soil that can be used for plants!!
But if i was into modern gardens then yes............... you made a good job of it....... looks very nice!!!! Like the raised beds as well.........

Nooooooooooooooo i dont really have any pics of my gardens................. LMAO

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Deb........................ you are such a naughty girl!!!!!!!!! LOL
They arent very good photos on there.............. the new ones this year will be much better..... as someone is making me take photos of every inch of my garden!!!!! I wonder who it is that is making me take photos of my garden............. could it be someone called BEC|KY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Oh BTW Mandy.................. If you do go to my site.............. pleaseeeeeee sign the guestbook, won't you??? Thank you!!!!!
