Pixie, did you lift the dahlias before it got close to freezing? I'm told chilly nights trigger the dormancy in dahlias. I often let them get a touch of frost before lifting them. I store mine loose in paper bags in cardboard boxes on the un-heated basement floor. They don't 'wake up' until I divide them in April.
Al should know what went wrong.

Pix, it looks like you've got that new kind of 'trailing ghost' dahlia LOL at least they didn't rot
send out a call for the Uber Tuber
Stephen, you must be made of pretty tough stuff to be out ice fishing in -3 wind chill and you can still say you had fun. good for you!
Hurray! It's up to 40 here today and still climbing :0) I'd forgotten what it was like. I'm looking forward to going out for the mail.
Ah, yes. The days when it was pleasant to get the mail....
Pix, it looks like your new dahlia vine is blooming a rose! LOL

I almost got snookered. There is a new web site in the area, sponsored by the local newspaper. It has a lot to offer, including unlimited photo storage. I actually read the 'terms & conditions' this time. In small print it says that all entries become the property of the newspaper. Duhh, I don't think so.
Steve, it's based in Plymouth, Wickedlocal.com
Andy P
Snookered. That's a good word! Glad you didn't get snookered.
This is a family site, ya know?
snooker is/was a game like pool? and to be snookered was to be taken in by what we would call a "pool shark" ??? Is this true?
meant to also say that it is really unfair that such a clause is not made to be printed in large print. Maybe you should take out an ad [just a small one] and point it out? Some folks might not want pictures of their families belonging to a newspaper.

Blooms, I was tempted to sign up just to post a warning but how long do you think that would stay.
If anyone outside of the area wishes to do so, www.wickedlocalspotted.com is the site. be sure to use false info to sign up.
I will put the word out on our private city site. They love trash like this. lol. (done ~ http://www.inbrockton.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5759 )
Snookered, lol. the word just came to me in stead of those 4 letter ones.

You chose your word well, Andy. "Snookered" is a perfectly good word.
We are officially into mud season here. The ground is frozen but the top inch thaws in the day. With all the rain we had last week that means mud.
It got up to 48 F yesterday, warm enough to give Sarah a badly needed bath. We do this outdoors on the lawn. I hook the hose up to the bathroom sink for warm water. It's done in 8 minutes.
Yesterdays problem was I couldn't let her run after. She usually dances and runs a few laps around the yard after she gets toweled off. So after her reward for being a good girl, we came in. Then she wanted to play inside. Still damp.
Andy P
She looks so happy andy.lol . Hope to get picture's of the cape cod canel. The ice flow is unreal.
Keep the camera with you, Steve. I don't think anyone has posted Cape Cod ice flows, yet.
Yea, Sarah is always happy when the bath is OVER, lol.
Andy P
I was flabberghasted and chagrinned to see snookered on this thread. I'm flummoxed!
Blooms, can you do word origin on these too. I really liked that.
Dave, Chagrined is derived from a French word meaning saddened. Flummoxed is something I've heard on old western movies.
It's all ephemeral.
Andy P
Pixie - I've been a little bamboozelded lately.
Looks like your dahlias got a little warm and wanted to grow, looks bad but it's better than rotting or drying out. If you do have a cooler spot (40-50) you should move them there. You can cut back the shoots to a few inches first. I also put a cover of newspaper or something to keep the light out some too.
Al, I kind of look at it this way.....I didn't kill them yet!
Andy, is that a smelly sock in Sarah's mouth?
It was clean when I gave it to her. lol. She has all sorts of toys but an old sock is still her favorite. They get mangled pretty quick in winter.
I recently put my office chair at the kitchen table where I use the laptop. This chair has wheels, she brings the sock and pulls me around the room.
Andy P
Ha! I'd love to see that Andy. I've grown so fond of dogs! I used to be a serious cat person, but my DBF is allergic to cats. So I've been won over by dogs. Nothing cuter...or more disgusting at the same time than a dog (no details since it's suppertime)!
AHHHH, Dog Germs........
Andy, I've lurked on your threads but I had to come out of hiding to say how wonderful your photos are and I can really relate to the sock thing. My labbie loves my socks. He will flip the lid on the hamper to pull out a sock. As Boo said they can be oh so cute and oh so yuck!!
Boo? Is that how you pronounce it? I always imagined it rhyming with Postum, for no particular reason.
xxxx, Carrie
Boo is correct. We named Boojum the puppy after a tree and a snark (Louis Carrol). And we liked Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird.
Is the JUM silent? (I like Boo Radley too.)
Dave
No it's a 2 syllable name, Boo-jum. I'm bad with names of characters in books but Boo Radley stuck. I was going to say, I can't remember the girl's name but then I remembered Scout. Is that right?
Yup. That's right. Scout.
Andy, I also would love to see Sarah pulling you around on your wheelie chair! My dog only chews my socks while I'm putting them on my feet. He has no interest if they're lying around on the floor. Once my foot is in the sock, he stops chewing. I don't get it. Ya gotta ask him. Probably the grossest thing he does, is bring all his bones, treats, soggy toys from outside, into my bed. I have to sweep it out every night. Eeeew!
Harper
Boojum the dog has a game with me. For years when I come downstairs he runs over and growls at me, then runs to his food bowl to finish his kibble. Somewhere along the way he decided I could eat the stuff and he can't shake it. But now we use it to our advantage. When my DBF is in a hurry to leave (and of course Boojum goes to work with him) and Boojum has been nibbling at his breakfast, my BF calls me to come down and speed things up. Works like a charm. This week I was on vacation, so one day I slept late and when I opened the refrigerator after they were gone, there was his bowl full of kibble.
Cute doggie stories. We have 2 very old cats so we are putting off a dog for now. My 7 yr. old loves dos so much that it's just a matter of time before we get one.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all-time favorite books & movies. Great morality story. Do you know what now-famous actor played Boo Radley?
Was it a young Dennis Hopper?
No
Oh! Robert Duvall. Great role for a great actor.
Sarah only plays with 'her' socks. She might nibble on mine as I put them on but...
She never grabs any sock unless I deliberately give it to her. Then it's hers untill it gets shredded ~ 5 minutes to 5 days.
Except for greeting guests, she has the manners of a well behaved child.
Andy P
You got it! I have another good trivia question from that book. Jeb & Scout's friend (the other boy) is based on what real life friend of the author?
This is from my DBF-Truman Capote. I remember their friendship from the movie Capote.
Another little trivia question. What other novels did Harper Lee author?
Got us there.
This is all I could come up with:
In 1957 Miss Lee submitted the manuscript of her novel to the J. B. Lippincott Company. She was told that her novel consisted of a series of short stories strung together, and she was urged to rewrite it. For the next two and a half years she reworked the manuscript with the help of her editor, Tay Hohoff, and in 1960 TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD was published, her only published book. In 1961 she had two articles published: "Love - In Other Words" in Vogue, and "Christmas To Me" in McCall's. "Christmas To Me" is the story of Harper Lee receiving the gift of a year's time for writing from friends. "When Children Discover America" was published in McCall's in 1965.
And this:
A few years ago, when a 35th anniversary edition of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD was being prepared, a publisher asked her to write an introduction for the book. She wrote, "Please spare 'Mockingbird' an Introduction

Yep, the answer is none. One great book and done. How amazing is that.
and to stay out of the public spot-light.
It is amazing isn't it? I remember reading a John Steinbeck novel and loving it so much that I devoured all his other books. But with Harper there were no other books to read. She did it once and boy, did she do it right!!
