New Forum Please? "Agastaches & Salvias"

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I have not tried, the plant's still a bit on the small side to take cuttings. But I'm sure I wouldn't be successful, cuttings just aren't my thing. Even though I know all the tricks and theories, whenever I try to do it I can never get anything to root. If it ever blooms and make seeds though I'd be happy to send you some!

Thanks, much! I would take you up on that offer!

Since Chuck had asked about siting of his salvia, this is a great chart:

I have just jump BIG in to growing salvia's, doing butterfly & hummerbird garden on a BIG scale.
Will do trail gardens this season, will see what grows best here in the hot humid south GA.

Due to the lack of water last summer my gardening plans has change a bit. Growing more drought tolerant perennials, wanna be a bit more WATER WISE! And what better plant to grow than salvia's! Also wanna HELP the Monarch out with a Monarch Waystation. more info see www.morachwatch.org

I was think about starting a Agastache/Salvia Secret Trade-Swap.

Would anyone be interested? I would be glad to host one!
Last year I hosted a canna ST and what FUN we all had!!

Whatcha think?

I'd sure be into a seed swap.... and if I have good luck again with wintersowing and/or volunteer seedlings, I'll have extra plants to trade also.

Marilyn can you take cuttings of the ones that are not or seeds for the next season ?

Hebron, KY

Allison,

I don't know how to take cuttings, I have never done that.

Marilyn

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Marilynbeth,
You do want to do this so that you can increase your salvias by many and so that you're not starting over from scratch each season! If you think you'e having fun with salvias now, wait til you start multiplying them and can have tons of them. The propagation forum will tell you all about cuttings. You're gonna have so much fun!

Sherry,

Thanks for the info! If I have to grow them during the Winter (don't have a GH and can't grow them in the basement), then I'll have to pass on it and just buy them each year as I have been doing.

I didn't realize there was a forum on propagation, but I'll check it out.

Think about this

A small co-op purchasing wholesale Agastache & Salvia plugs!
I'll be placing an wholesale order with 2 weeks, but I do not need
all 70 plugs., only needing about 36 of them. Here I can pass the
saving on to you. Plugs start at .77 cent and up, there will be 34 plugs
available out of each tray I order. More details on how you should order later.

I will also be order many other perennials plants for hummer's & butterflies too.
Narrowing down my list, if theres any interest please D-mail me.
I can send you my purchase list & cost prices.

I've never work a co-op but I'm sure if we keep it simple everyone will be happy with there plugs
and the money you'll be saving. If I have 10 or less that interest that would be great!

Let me hear from u!
Thanks
Donna V.

Donna, I would be cautious doing coops on plugs--since they are very small they don't always do well with the extra time in transit and reshipping that happens with a coop. I've never participated in one for plugs, but I know there were a couple coops last year that involved plugs which ended up getting very ugly, and there was at least one other thread (I think on the coop forum) where someone was thinking of doing a coop with plugs and everyone was telling them to reconsider. I think it adds too much additional risk and stress onto the already tough job of being a coop organizer. But a coop on a little bit more fully grown plants would be interesting if there was someone who would offer us a good discount.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mine. Might be best for some DG's within a 200 miles of me!

Marilyn you don't need a lot fo room to save cuttings ! Handmade light stands with inexspensive light doulbe light fixtures from Lowes or HD , Stands bought at reasonable prices , Windows, Clip on Spot grow lights cover a lot of space. Right now our dinning room table is covered with plants, cuttings that were on our screen porch and its been getting cold at night . Hubby cliped and high spectrum grow light up above them on ceiling fan and their real Happy. ,
Take small cuttings of your favorites, or each plant, maybe a couple extras for sharing and trading. We use a soil-less mix that is light and good drainage for inside. Find clean ( bleach soak before use) pots. We use mostly plastic all different sizes , find the sizes that are good for you. We love windowsill shelves. Hubby makes them the whole length of the windows and then puts another over up above ! You don't need a lot of room we had light stands in one bedroom tiny single wide trailer . They can look nice with knick knacks and books, light fixture put under on book shelves and more ! Over in the Home decorating Bettygail posted some pretty pictures of her new light stands made from wood from carpenter ! he had them in her dinning room " fancy", bedroom and more . You can not only enjoy your plants year round but have a head start, have cuttings and plants to share and more !
They root pretty fast so even as they grow in your home in Winter you can take cuttings for more plants to share and trade if you want !
Happy Growing !

And this one......

Hebron, KY

It happened, I think, a couple days before DH took the photos on the 14th, and it still looks this way. More snow is expected tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. We've been in a 'deep freeze' for weeks too. We got 6.5 " of snow, not counting the sleet and ice we got.

Here's another pic that I lighting, I think, looks a little different on the photo he took.

We get snow and then some of it melts with the sun, then we get more snow, then some of it melts and so on, same thing goes on and on. :-((

It looks like a winter wonderland.

Hebron, KY

Yes, it does Fireant. its been that way for days and with more cold temps and snow coming, its not going to be melting anytime soon.

This was also taken on the 14th by DH.

Marilynbeth,
They're all beautiful! Can you tell I never get to see that?! Every time our closest local mountains get snow...that's where I can be found.

You should make your Christmas cards from those shots.

Sherry,

Thanks, but we don't send them out. I used to though.

Here's a pic that DH took just today at 6 pm. Deer were eating birdfood (there are 2 others that aren't in this shot)

This one, also taken today, has alot more sun then the ones taken on the 14. The icy branches had some melting and freezing and have (in person) a different sparkly look. I hope you can see it in the pic. Photo taken at 4:21 pm

Thanks for allowing me to share the pics in this forum, when Allison asked how everyone was, I thought about sharing how things were in my neck of the woods.

Now lets get back to Salvias and Agastaches!

Salvia 'Indigo Spires' with the sun shining on it on 10/10/06 at 3 pm. Agastaches and some other Salvias are in the pic too.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

My largest Indigo Spires was about 4' tall and about 7' wide before being hit by our frost this year. I was out cutting back frost damage today and it's still alive at the bottom. Just as well that it got nipped since I didn't have the heart to cut it back last year and this way it will be "refreshed" for this coming year. We won't be having any more frost, so I can start setting out new salvias this next couple of weeks. I'm excited about adding in some reds that I 've usually stayed away from, can't wait to see how things shape up.

(Zone 9a)

With winter pictures like those you could make up your own Christmas cards every year. It's been three years since I've walked through a snowy place.

Hebron, KY

Wow!

4 feet by 7 feet wide!

I can't get over the 7 feet wide part! I can't even imagine it! Amazing!
