Are you supposed to bring stuff? Plants? I am starting from a sorriful point now. Not this year, damage and gophers and rabbits and damping off, caleche, calcium soil, blah blah. I just want to feel the love of the dgers and make world peace. The crown please.
3rd Annual SO CAL RU MAY 19, 07
You CAN bring stuff, but you don't have to! It's just that everyone has been so generous the past two years and I was hoping to be able to contribute this year. Our garden is all new, and I'm a beginner on top of that. Feel the love, hellnzn11!
Donna, I forgot to say I am available to help - let me know if there is something I can do.
Kathleen
I`m fillin ya sista.
hellnzn11....just out of curiosity, why is your member name "zone11" if you live in Zone 8 ???
Sunset zone 11, USDA zone 8b. You know the sunset zones are more accurate here.
My DH never goes to round-ups with me. He might like to when he has more time. Great idea . . never thought of using the tape on him . . . it usually isn't an issue.
lol Do you stay all day, start to finish?
Hi there Dawn,
Yes, we do stay all day...you don't want to leave after meeting all these wonderful people!! Don has a lovely ranch and setting for our gathering. Besides chatting, eating and trading plants, you will want to wander around the immediate area and enjoy their gardens too. His home overlooks the horse paddocks and corrals and sometimes we can see some of the horses being trained and even being bathed. It is a full day for sure and when it's time to leave, you will be looking forward to the next event to come. lol
Regarding your DH coming...many people come alone, but some do bring their spouses and they generally just talk with other spouses or other gardeners. It's also a time to just watch all the goings on too. I think it just depends on what your spouse is like...outgoing or quiet. lol
Kaperc (Kathleen), glad to see you can make it again. Thanks for your offer to help. I'll let you know, ok?
Donna
thanks all.
I ditch the DH. He can hardly tell a daffodil from a dandylion. I bring the DD instead. She promptly ditches me for Elliot's winning ways. Lol. Horses are always high on a teenage girl's favorite things list.
kaperk, no joke on the frost. This was a gorgeous blooming brug just the week before. Pitiful isn't it! Notice the very tender leopard plant beneath it that is just fine. Go figure. It looked worse-I had already stripped all of the dead passion vines from the fences. I hope zoztropz (Mark) fared better than I.

Yep, frogs, looks similar to some of ours - most obvious our Tipu tree, but it was due to lose its leaves anyway. Passion vine, epis, plumerias, even a couple of natives bit the dust, not to mention the banana, of course. One of my potted guavas will recover, I think. Pipes froze, too. :-(
My DH will probably come again, especially if there are any ponders there - he's finally discovered a garden passion. :-)
Kathleen
handmade tortillas! yum!
Harold , drag my friend Marie Ortiz with you from AZ.
Great Idea, Harold.
I bought my ticket to San Diego yesterday....my granddaughter (ezlivin) will meet me...then I will fly to Nashville to start my annual visit "Back East". Jo
Tortillas would be great on the grill. Corn or flour?
They could even be filled with some of the wonderful salad mixes that always show up, or cheese, or...
....or chocolate! er.....why not? Jo
I make this cool jello salad that people always ask me to make, it isn`t mexican though. It has a cheesecake kind of topping on it and it is supposed to have sharp chedder , just a bit, graded on it, but I don`t usually put it on, though it tastes great, people look twice.
Okay, bringing a Fiesta Salad.
sherry
Everybody is going to make a salad or bring corn, it`s a plant thing. lol
Speaking of Foods!:
Why not try like this Mexican Lasagna which put some corn or flour tortillas of each layers. Nice spice taco seasons in hamburger. put meat bottom of 9 x 13 inches baking dish. Then layer of your choice of tortillas. Each layers meats, refried bean and some ricottia cheese then alot of cheese on top. foil cover. Preheat 375 degrees for 45 min. or until it bubbly on top. Remove foil wrap and cook another 10 min. to melt cheese.
Also if you like put your own dip in this food: sour cream, avocados, tomatoes and some your favorites dips.

lol Mam.begging your pardon, so you must not know Jamie Mac., If he is in town, tell him I love him.
Of course, Jo, how could I forget CHOCOLATE? lol
For first-timers, chocolate is one of the standard menu items. :-) Jo gets dangerous if we skimp!
G-R-R-R......(sound I make when I go too long with out chocolates) LOL Jo
Jo, What day do you come in to town? We should do some more of that "high quality" shopping LOL!
I love it that the AZ people are coming because I talk to them often. Especially Marie Ortiz

Janet....I'll be in on Thursday (I think!)...nope....make that Wed....all the cheap flights were taken so I had to fly on Wed. So....I will be FREE Thursday and Friday!! Don't you work now? We really should get something nice for Pam and Don from the high class store we like so well....hehehehe
Jo
It is a date!! I should have Thursday or Friday off I will let you know which!
Janice
Okey! I'll bring an extra $5.00 *shopping money* with me....that should include my half of the lunch too....LOL
Now everyone will really think we are CHEAP!! Jo
No, It's not cheap cost more! lol....
I`m lost
I'm thinking "Karen's Triple Chocolate Brownies" will make the 6 hour drive ok. Other than that, I'm probably an "I'll bring chips" candidate. LOL
K
Ok don`t let me be the 5th wheel, I don`t know anything, so you tell me what I need to bring or who I give money to for a gift, if thats how we do it. I am green and this is my first year here in July. If I knew more I could help but I think I`ll watch and learn this year. Does everyone bring a gift for Dr. Don or do people pitch in? I am trying to get some more of the Sw gardeners to come. Do people like a lot of things like fattening stuff, desert and stuff, what kinds of things go over big, what flops?
I guess I got ya'll befuddled with my jokes to Frogs! Year before last she picked me up at my granddaughters house and we went "shopping"....we ended up going to the Dollar Store....and having lunch at a fast food place....Big Spenders. huh? LOL
I usually take a gift (something I made) to Don and Pam. Jo
thanks, you sound like my kind of peeps. lol You ate before you went to eat at the round up?
How's a batch of homemade refried beans sound to you all?!!??! I made some last night and the family raved so thought it would be a nice side to the carne asada.
Donna, if you need anything now, let me know. How about that food thread?
Weeg, you are going now?
Sound good for homemade refried beans...
Anna
