We had sweetshops on every corner and a place called Mal's where you could get an awful-awful (some amazing amount of ice cream as I remember).
Daily Musings - Page 7
Oh my gosh, a lot of shows I never heard of and now sweetshops!
For ice cream, we had Newt's Cafe. If it was your B'day, you could treat everyone in your class to an ice cream cone instead of rhe box of Slo-pokes I chose because they lasted so long. Plus, we got to walk from the school to Newt's.
I remember the 5¢ ice cream come, 35¢ Saturday matinée movie with cartoons and a short, even real penny candy stores.
There was this guy in basic training from Pennsylvania that looked very familiar. It turned out that he was a regular on American Bandstand. Small world.
Hey, is it cold enough for you? ? ?
Andy P
TOO COLD! Polar Bears & Eskimo kinda cold!!
YA, really cold here. And the wind is getting worse. It sez it feels like -5, but it's definitely lower.
What was the guy's first name from AB, do you remember? I watched religiously. We still have maple creamies right near me that sell for a quarter at the sugarhouse!! When I was first here (1970's -80's) there was a drive-in movie 5 minutes from here but now it's a farmer's market. But there's still one in operation about 35 minutes away.
Small world! Cool.
Cold here! One more nasty night! Now I need to run out and get the mail that got here earlier.
We still have a drive-in movie here too. I have taken every one of my kids and hope to take the GC too!
I still remember the A & W Rootbeer place where they served you on the side of your car and were on rollerskates when they did!
We had A&W in the next town, plus a drive-in and a small zoo. I miss the zoo still even tho it had tiny inhumane cages. You could feed the elephant and they had alligators, buffalo and monkeys, a lion, snakes and baboon. The park across the road had the neatest merry go round. you could sit or stand on the rail seat, grab the upright posts and pull on them so it sort of rocked back and forth. It was so cool!!
Boo, that was over 40 years ago and only for basic training. Sorry I don't remember the American Bandstand dancer's name.
The local drive-ins are now a Wal-Mart and an 'Over 55' condo complex.
Do you remember the price of the original McDonald's hamburger?
Andy P
I remember Chiclets! I remember get Smart with Don Adams and Barbara Felton. I remember 14 cent twinkies, and a B righams ice cream cone was 23 cents. Batman! Bam! Pow!
And Al, my daughter was just diagnosed with celiac disease, no more gluten, no flour, no bread, no cookies, except yours! Thanks! And I wintersowed your Helenium.
xxx, Carrie
Carrie - you're welcome. That batch of cookies lasted about 3 hours ;)
I have something related to celiac's and have been wheatless and dairy free for about 2 years. I eat a lot of dark chocolate (too much but hey I can only eat 2 desserts!) D-mail me if she needs help, Carrie.
Andy, I'm thinking McD's cheeseburger's were .15? not sure about the regular hamburgers. Before they opened the first McD's in Buffalo, we had a Mr. S down the street from my high school with the exact same menu & prices. we could actually afford to go out and eat lunch.
Gram, that's about right.
Well this is where I bail out .
