This is a continuation of http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/681129/ where the merits of lifting and storing bulbs, corms and tubers are discussed.
I know this gardener who buys new Dahlia seedlings each Spring as bedding flowers. They look fine but are so small compared to what mature plants would be.
Who would not lift and store this Gladiola.

Edited to say: Both of these photos are from "bulbmart" on ebay. I believe they are really called Hirts Gardens. I have ordered many bulbs from them over the last 3 years and always get great service! I usually buy one new lily bulb from them at this time of the year to force it indoors. They wrap it in a heat pack to ship it to me, and usually by Easter I have my own home grown lily blooming!

Here's the one im bidding on now as my "Easter Lily" cross your finger that I win the bid please!
http://cgi.ebay.com/Brasilia-Hybrid-Oriental-Lily-2-Bulbs-Ship-begins-1-07_W0QQitemZ180077119629QQihZ008QQcategoryZ75662QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
that's a beauty, Pix. isn't the shipping high if you only buy one?
Gram, for the 2 glads above I paid $6.40 for S&H and thats for 20 bulbs (bag of 10 each). So if it's only 6.40 for 20 bulbs, I doubt it will be to much for 2 bulbs. At least I hope not.
I calculated $4.80? You might want to look into that first before adding to you bid?
you usually do much better on those eBay things if you win more than one auction and combine them. most sellers will give you a break on shipping.
If they combine w/the glad bulbs I should be alright, if not.......a lesson learned!
Gram, back to your question about the red in my amaryllis photo: that's not how it looks in real life! The actual flower is much deeper, richer. The entire flower has a velvety quality that I couldn't capture. I'm glad you like the photo, but you gotta see the flower!
Andy, those glad photos are beautiful!
Pixie, good luck on your bid.
Harper
Kell, those are beautiful!! What a wonderful plant they are.
Hi everybody!!
Yes, my first Amaryllis ever was a gift from my mother, who told me to throw it away when it was done blooming! My second was a gift from my daughter, who bought it the church youth fair. It never bloomed that year, but I left it outside all summer. I was planning to wash it off and repot it, but I never got around to it. Meanwhile, I asked in the bulb forum what I should do with it and learned that you could get your Amaryllis (hippeaster) to last forever and make babies and so I went and bought about $100 worth of bulbs because it's an INVESTMENT! So far it's been fantastic, although I forget to store them cold enough so they start growing in the dining room under the table. But if they are this beautiful every winter - it's worth $100 every fall! But from now on it's free, free, free!

Hi carrielamont
Can we see a Picture ?
Too dark here now for a decent pic - tomorrow if I get a chance I will. I'll pose them together. [and some of them haven't even met yet!]
Ginger, if you go back a few months I used to be on here all the time. Hi, Ginger. Folks, my Dad's stopped improving, or 'plateaued' (I didn't know that was a verb). We're trying to rustle up some self-pay home care for him - in Santa Fe, NM, not exactly local! Although I have to admit, he's more local than you are! How did you happen to wander on here? (Because there's no Australia forum... ask a stupid question...) For those of you who forgot, or had more interesting things to muse on, my dad had a stroke 11.20.06 which was his 70th birthday. He is (still) totally paralyzed on his right side and seems to have severe cognitive impairment as well.
xxxxx, Carrie
Goodness Carrie, you have your hands full. No wonder we haven't heard much from you! I didn't realize it was so severe, I am so sorry. I hope you find someone for you Dad. That has to be so difficult being on the other side of the U.S. snd trying to find good, honest folks to care for him. Good luck and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Celeste
Sorry to hear about your Dad.
These times are never easy.
We had a high of 25 today, it may get down to 13 tonight. The weather man made me feel really good about this fact. He reminded all the viewers what the temps. were on this day in 2005. -29

Good luck Carrie! Is there a local senior center you could ask for suggestions?
Thanks, Dave! We're looking into everything.

musing, what an evocative word.
Are we supposed to be from the northeast to chime in?
I hadn't realized that.
But there's only a handful of us here in Utah and we don't need or want a forum all our own.
In the fall thur spring our weather and gardening conditions are more like the NE, in the summer when it gets so verrrry hot it's more like the tropics. I choose my plants by their water requirements because that is the one truly important factor in the summer. Any plant labeled "likes full sun" may make it in the shade of my trees.
right now, it is freeezing out there, but we have no snow cover so any time the sun warms me enough I can do surface things. The earth is frozen, but clean up and planning are possible.
Welcome to all the folks from down under. I'm glad to find you here on DG, it is more than interesting to find how others live and garden in their home land. Right now I'm off to find a picture of a red amaryllis in my DDs garden. ~~Blooms
Blooms, you made me go looking for a red Amaryllis pic. The ones I shot last year were disappointing but I managed to clean up this one. Hopefully I'll shoot better ones soon, within a week or so.
It got warm here today, all of 41F. Sarah and I went for a long walk because it's going to get extra cold tomorrow and Friday.
I always liked the word 'musing', I like 'ephemeral' too but that's not important, lol. (Gee, I even spelled it correctly. I love spell-check.)
Andy P
My favorite words are concatenate and contigious. Just thought I would share.
Andy - maybe you can sell some of your photos to the new Gardens.com! Gram, too.
I wonder how much they are going to charge us to renew . . . If they knew how much I love DG - they would charge me more than I can afford. I think that current members should be Grandfathered in at $15 a year! Do I hear a second to the motion?
Nope. I already have mentioned on several threads over the few years I've been a member that I think $15 a year is almost a gift. There are dot coms out there that charge $15 a MONTH. for things no where as good as this.
Sorry about the run on sentence.
Andy here's my one 'close to red' picture of a passion flower.
I think $15 a year is pretty cheap but I wouldn't tell the management that. It would only encourage them to increase it even more.
I'm very frugal, anything over $25 a year may be too much. 4 or 5 free sites could possible fill the gap.
Andy P
Andy, I'm as tight as the next one and danged picky about where I spend my money. $25 might shut out some of our friends tis true and I wouldn't like that to happen. But when I look at the improvements made and the servers hired.... well the money has to come from somewhere.
If all 3 of the partners think this a good idea I tend to go along with them. Dave sure has done good by us so far. This Garden has begat friendships that span the globe. How great is that.
~Blooms
I have no problem raising the price IF it means no advertising.Paying for something and then having advertising also really bugs me. There are major advantages DG has over other sites such as the 'my page', bigger pictures without links and allowing commercial links. It would be hard to say if the new owners would find those options profitable. And this is a business so money will be a factor.
Blooms, I have another 9 or 10 months on my subscription. I'll worry about it then.
We are about to have the coldest weather of the season, are you ready??????
Clean or replace the furnace air filter.
Vacuum under the fins if baseboard hot water heat.
Go around the house and make sure all windows are tightly closed.
Pull window treatments away from radiators.
Pull the shades on every window at night.
The predicted high temp Friday is 8f here with 25 MPH winds.
Get ready.
Andy P
Just heard the same thing for here Andy. said it would be a high of maybe 10 degrees but the wind will make it -10. Yuk! Looks like i'll be staying home friday.....a baking day to help the house stay extra toastie!!
Pixie, I do that too. Bake something and the kitchen warms up, something the furnace can't seem to accomplish.
Hey Andy, Pooch posted something funny
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3119006
I'm thinking of a fruit pie and maybe my not so famous Dublin Stew with dumplings.
BTW, the subscription rate will be $25 per year, but we can extend our current subscriptions at todays rate of $15.
Andy P
HI andy got the kobi fixed today.He.s o. k a little slow'but doing good.
Steve, I thought about him this morning, his big day. Snip, Snip.
I HAVE to go in to the office tomorrow, but I work at home on Friday so I'm going to make a pot of beef stew. Maybe bake some bread, too. Andy, don't tell my DH you're baking a pie. He's been telling me every day this week that it's National Pie Day. Claims it's unpatriotic that I'm not baking a pie. although he did tell me cake would be acceptable LOL
I should renew right away. I know I will anyway. there are so many poorly done web sites. and I agree about the advertising. I've stopped subscribing to magazines that are 75% ads.
Query?? do we really have a National Pie Day ??
Blooms, nah..he was just trying to guilt me into making him a pie. it's been National Pie Day for about the last 6 days LOL
