My foreign-born friend at work was sneaking out for a couple of minutes, and secretly told me "cover me up". She meant "cover for me".
Do you have a favorite quote or saying?
lol... good one!!!!
Bluegrass Mom, Thanks for adding some Southern wisdom to our forum. I love the one about the wet mule. Never heard that before.
My DFIL favorite saying:
" If brains were dynamite he wouldn't have enough to blow a dust speck away."
Working with the public I always had to be cheerful and polite, however the customers weren't always the same way. After one particular man left, I looked at my boss and asked " Is it just me, or did he have the personality of a dead frog?" I really don't know where that came from but my boss had tears coming down her face she was laughing so hard. When she finally caught her breath she told me she had just been thinking that he was an "old toad". Great minds think a like! (another good saying)
brings to mind.
"He musta forgot his stupid sign."
"I'm with Stupid-> "
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how'd you like the play?"
I garden, therefore I am...
LOL @ Blooms...never heard that one before!
Amongst my group of friends it is something we say when one of us has gone thru a littany of 'what is gone wrong with his/her life. ...
It's a quick sort of 'things could be worse' and a giggle to break the mood. We like our truths with a sprinkle of irony.
I had to copy some of these. They're great. My favorite gardening quote so far is:
"I used to love my garden
but now my love is dead
for I found a Bachelor's Button
in Black Eyed Susan's bed."
Harper
another one that came to mind.......
" Of all the things i've lost..I miss my mind the most."
it's a tie: "this too shall pass" & "appearances are deceiving"
My DD favorite one:
"life isn't measured by the number of breath's we take, but by the moments that take our breath away"
that's a nice one pix. I tend toward the cynical. got a button for Christmas that says
As soon as you make something idiot proof someone will make a better idiot.
LOL Gram, but oh so true!
Hi everyone,
I have only posted three or so times in a year, but only because I don't get to the computer regularly. I do love the posts though and can't pass this thread up. This is from my Grandmother, currently 92. I remember this said all the time as a child. I think it was a substitute for a long sigh.
Oh Dear,
Bread and beer
If I were rich
I wouldn't be here
Lynne
"This too shall pass" has been very helpful to me in tough times. Because it is true.
Another one I love is long and I don't know it all, but it begins:
"when they came for the Jews, I did nothing because I wasn't a jew......."
I know I've heard that, Dave, but can't recall it all. I wish you could find the rest of it.
Dave-I hope you don't mind. Do you have a favorite variation?
The version inscribed at the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston, Massachusetts reads:
They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
yes, that's the one I remember. thanks for finding it for us.
~Blooms
Thank you from me too, diggerette.
There are some wonderful sayings here! I am really looking forward to more. Here are some of my favorites:
Recently read on a bumper sticker and now my "girls club" new motto:
I am still hot; just now it comes in flashes!
Found looking for something to engrave on a business card holder celebrate my SIL's Real Estate License:
A house is made of walls and beams; a home is made of love and dreams
My favorite is stolen from one of the designers on Trading Spaces (a southern saying, I believe):
Build a bridge and get over it.
Al, so you've heard that one? I see you like to let Susan sleep around. My Susan's going to have a pretty frisky summer this year too.
I love that 'idiot' one Gram. That reminds me of my refridgerator magnet that has a quote from Einstein:
"Only two things are infinite: The Universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
Irishbelle, I like 'build a bridge and get over it.' Another one I like is: "God willing, and the creek don't rise"
Harper
Dave & diggerette, thanks for that. that is something that we all should always remember.
I totally agree Gram.
Loge40....I loved that *long sigh* saying!!
I love Mark Twain and his lack of prejudice and incredible wit.
I have no race prejudices, and I think I have no color prejudices or caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. Indeed I know it. I can stand any society. All that I care to know is that a man is a human being--that is enough for me; he can't be any worse. Mark Twain
Every man is in his own person the whole human race, with not a detail lacking. I am the whole human race without a detail lacking; I have studied the human race with diligence and strong interest all these years in my own person; in myself I find in big or little proportion every quality and every defect that is findable in the mass of the race. I knew I should not find in any philosophy a single thought which had not passed through my own head, nor a single thought which had not passed through the heads of millions and millions of men before I was born; ...What a coward every man is! and how surely he will find it out if he will just let other people alone and sit down and examine himself. The human race is a race of cowards; and I am not only marching in that procession but carrying a banner.
- Mark Twain in Eruption
PKG Thanks for bringing up Twain. Here are more:
"Always do right. That will gratify some of the people, and astonish the rest."
"When in doubt, tell the truth."
"It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt."
"Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century."
"Often it does seem a pity that Noah and his party did not miss the boat."
Diggerrette, Thank you for straightening out the quote I couldn't remember!
You're welcome. It's a powerful message, I'm glad Dave brought it to mind.
Whoa - now this is scary. I visited the Twain house on Saturday! Attached is a picture of the house. Twain loved cats and there are several Twain quotes about cats:
If a man could be crossed with a cat, it would improve man, but deteriorate the cat.
And this one from Puddin'head Wilson - A home without a cat--and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat--may be a perfect home, perhaps, but how can it prove title?
Quote from my girlfriend's bumper sticker. Labor Movement - The people who brought you the weekend.
We can agree Twain was great. Another one I love, I'll have to paraphrase:
"When I was 14 I realized my father didn't know anything. When I was 18, I was surprised how much he learned in 4 years."
Yep. Gotta love Mark Twain.
I don't know who to attribute these to, but my husband says:
"Hoisted by his own pitard"
Wait. there's another one. Argh! I forget. I'll have to get back to you on that one.
Harper
The quote is from Hamlet.
If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
~ Mother Teresa
Thanks Yankee Cat. I should know that. I'm sure DH does.
I like the Mother Teresa one! So true! That's like what Mark Twain was saying...
Harper
Uhhh... What's a pitard?
Yankee, that's a great Momma T quote.
The most common quote attributed to her, wasn't hers. It was something they found on her wall and assumed she created:
People are unreasonable,
illogical, and self-centered,
LOVE THEM ANYWAY
If you do good, people will
accuse you of selfish,
ulterior motives,
DO GOOD ANYWAY
If you are successful, you win
false friends and true enemies,
SUCCEED ANYWAY
The good you do will
be forgotten tomorrow,
DO GOOD ANYWAY
Honesty and frankness
make you vulnerable,
BE HONEST AND FRANK ANYWAY
What you spent years building
may be destroyed overnight,
BUILD ANYWAY
People really need help but
may attack you if you help them,
HELP PEOPLE ANYWAY
Give the world the best you
have and you'll get kicked
in the teeth,
GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU'VE GOT ANYWAY.
I keep this one over my desk
From Wikipedia:
A petard was a medieval small bomb used to blow up gates and walls when breaching fortifications.
