Bird Forum

Interesting. What else would I have talked about in a wildlife forum other than birds?

edited to add... I avoided the wildlife forums for a very long time and have only recently looked sporadically.

I was thinking a wild bird forum would enable those of us who feed and watch birds in our own backyards a place to discuss it and post pictures. I also feed and enjoy squirrels, though I know there are those who don't like them in their gardens. I have to hope people would not write about ways of killing them or any other of Gods' creatures. First thing every morning, a flock of at least fifty grackles flies in to my feeders for first choice of the food offerings. I find them annoying but beautiful, and I don't chase them away....they eat what they want and fly off and then I usually add a little more and all the rest of the birds arrive to eat. I feel if you don't want all the birds to eat, maybe you shouldn't be putting out birdfood at all. I vote AYE for a wildbird forum.

Well come on y'all, can we not clearly see that we are as colorful and diverse as the birds we discuss and not take anything personal? Opinions are all like armpits, we all have them, and some of them kinda stink a little. Furthermore, so does our sweet little baby's behind before it is washed by a loving, caring parent. Exactly why I suggested a mature adminship.

I still don't think this particular fuss is really about the birds at all, but more about how some individuals hold and share their passion for them. We are gardeners first and formost.. That is what has initially brought us all together, or hasn't it? Let's continue to keep the main thing the main thing (gardening). After it all settles some very interrested parties will still be standing, and some will be restored even better than before.... I trust those who were lost will return again then too :-).

Pardon my graphics, but all life comes by some sort of passion with a little or a lot of friction.. and that is the same friction it is sustained by, and the longevity it holds in doing so.

I think it is worth it all the more!

Aye!

Well, I finally just found this thread.

I would LOVE to see a Bird Forum. I am very new to bird watching and would love to have a reference and discussion forum to learn about all the different birds here in the U.S. I think that is what a lot of folks would like.

I think it is ashame that this has turned into such debate due to a few folks who seem to think the best way to get their point across is to cause trouble on an innocent forum towards folks who just love birds and want to share their photos and stories. And that's exactly how I see it just reading the posts here.

Personally, I think the BIGGEST threat to birds and all wildlife are humans. With all the progress and development here in this fine country, I see wildlife declining in numbers due to the fact that their habitats are being destroyed forever!

Hey Stella, maybe we really need a forum on how to erradicate the Human Species. That might save all the birds that you are so passionately concerned about.

Just my two cents worth.

I say let's give a new Bird Forum a try here on DG!

I popped over her when I heard there was goign to be a bird forum. I too would like to see a Bird Watching forum. We have two sections over on Tinkers forums and if click on the little show topics link and click all you will see all kinds of discussions.

Those of us there are hemeholics, and gardeners but appreciate all the different types of wildlife. Yes, everybody is going to have those creatures they like or dislike, but the whole idea is just sharing pics and information with the biggest thing showing respect for our fellow man regardles s of out personal feelings on a particluar species.

One of the neatest things to watch, was a link to a live cam that was up in an Eagle's nest. You got to watch the egss, and the babies being born.

I have a small fainte d yellow bird that been in my yard now for several weeks, flying in and out through a crack in the door of my greenhouse. I have no idea what it is, never seen such a specie s here. It would be nice to be able to post a pic and get an id on it and some of the many other birds flying around.

Once a year I get this massive migration of birds. Have no idea what they are, just know they are black. They come by the hundreds and land all in our trees here. As they are coming in to rest, they sort of black out the sky. A very interesting sight to see for the few hour s they are here.

I think one of the biggest chuckles I got was when someone shared a picture of a Momma duck and her chicks that came from who know s where and decided to cros s a busy main street and held up traffic.

I had a huge and a mean huge Owl that started hanging out in one of my trees at night. Scared the daylights out of me the first night it flew in. Now I know there are different kinds of owls. It would be nice to post pics for identification and a bit of knowledge.

To me, these are the type of things that a Bird Watching forum is all about. Show pics of your favorite birds. Get info on iding birds. Discuss methods of bird watching and some of the best places and times to do it. West Nile Virus was very prevelant here. Discussions on what to watch for, how to handle any birds you see that might be affected and preventative methods. This are some things that make a good bird watching forum.

Came back to edit to say that here on Dave's there are thousand s of members from all over the world. I think it would fasinating and very educational to se e what birds live in backyards around the world.

Thank you starlight for that link, I looked at several bird threads and what an absolute pleasure it was to get an insight into how others see and are bemused by their birds. I am sat here with a huge grin on my face after viewing many wonderful threads, some made me break out in laughter. A sure therapy for those who need a little uplift in their lives.

I got to these two and just couldn't help laughing!

Please humor me here in demonstrating still another of the many ways to utilize Dave's quote commands:

Starlight, Your whole post was the very kind and kindness I invision seeing in a Birdwatching Forum...Yet for brevity sake, (y'all get my drift...) I am looking forward to reading more as we continue to discover critters all around us and in our gardens.
(Of course we have already been posting similar to this spirit in the Butterfly and Hummer Forum, hehe) The BF&H Forum has been a wonderful thing.. I can't say enough about how that has assisted me personally, and so many others as well. Don't want to gush, ok? LOL

Dear Janet~ I am tempted to quote the entire post you last entered!

It is you who had me sitting here the same as you described there....chain reaction, lol. Very cute mental picture of you in fromt of your monitor all happy, and stress floating away and high into the wind..

Portable Laptop Computer..................................$1000.00
Subscription to Dave's Garden Web........................$15.00
The look on Janets face reading a "wonderful thread" in the DG Web Forum........Priceless!

Yes, most of you know how to use the quote command that is most fruitful for all million the readers. I am tempted to mention how I agree wholeheartedly with so many of the peaceful "Ayes" we have here, but I also know we may not always agree on particular details. Honestly, from what I have experienced, looking for agreement when interacting with others is a sure way to set a standard hard (even impossible) to live by without sparking a powder keg.

There is such a great thing in apreciating and respecting/listening/reading someone's post who has a different fingerprint, bloodtype, or dna! We can however all agree on essentials and let the non-essential take a back seat. I never wish to exalt my opinion over another fellow gardener. People generally don't even care how much I know, until they know how much I care anyway.... that is so fine with me, rather not blame anyone for how I choose to be effected:-S.

Honored to be among you all here, through thick or thin!!

Just a thought here....if it's not possible to have a "formal" wild birdwatching forum then perhaps a sticky thread at the top of wildlife where those who have been/are rehabbers could post links and info on careing for sick or injured birds. Also what to do when a nestling or fledgling is found. Many times folks will "rescue" a young bird not realizing that in fact the mom/dad is still watching over it and feeding it. The sticky would also be a good idea if Dave sees fit to allow us a "formal" wild birdwatching forum.

Ginger,
I just posted here with such a link--with information on caring for birds, including information regarding nestlings and fledglings, written by a licensed rehabilitator. :) Apparently it was deemed self-promoting (since I wrote it and put it on a website?), and it was deleted. I'm hoping it was an error on someone's part.

Debnes_dfw_tx's,

You did good Marilyn! Always fun to learn something new...lol....

Well, this was an interesting and educational thread. It showed me that the HOSP problems are still alive and well on DG and that it continues to be a minefield. At the same time, I was struck by the fact that a huge majority want the forum for the stated purpose - enjoying birds - while a huge minority (one person?) wants to use it as a stage to promote their agenda (not that this is inherently bad, either).

I'm going to go with the majority here and, I'm sorry Stelco, but there will be no discussion allowed about "controlling" species in the bird watching forum. This will be carefully monitored and strong consequences will be given to members who break the rules. Discussion of culling birds will have to take place in Garden Foes or other places, but Bird Watching will be free of that stuff.

I'll create the forum in a few moments. I'm sure it'll be fine once people realize how strict we're going to enforce the forum.

Dave
