November BINGO, let the game begin!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

No, actually the 11:20 photo and the ones following are of 'Buckeye Boysenberry'. That wasn't another call, just me taking advantage of an opportunity to yak a little more about Buckeyes....

That closeup shot of 'Buckeye Evermore Freckles' is wonderful! My plant came from the Violet Gallery. :-)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

You can Yak LOL all you want Critter.I am enjoying and appreciate all the added information. And I agree with Janet,,my addiction is growing worse.I want them ALL!!! Another Beauty unfortunately not on my card : )

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

This is no mere competition- cedarnest and I have challenged each other to the death...or something like that. lol

She's a beauty...and she's on my card!!!! Whoo hoo!! I have a whopping SEVEN now!!! haha!!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL CJ. I keep picturing both of us poised over our keyboards...,ready to strike ....waiting for the next call while Critter is sitting in the background saying " Now you girls settle down or I will get out the wet noodle" : )

(Zone 1)

Not on my card, I'm still at 9.

The foliage on that 'Buckeye Boysenberry' is absolutely beautiful! I had no idea that any AV's had foliage that colorful and pretty!

I want one of those too! LOL. Now, I see why everyone gets so attached to these plants ... so many different leaf types, colors, flowers, ... Awesome!

And, again, Critter: Thanks for your knowledge! There's so much to know about AV's - I never knew how much! My brain is so bad about retaining info the older I get, so I'm very happy to have found the DG website and all you smart people!

Lin

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

lol Nah, cedar...I have a one-year old who'd never let me get away with that. I check intermittently but sometimes I get lucky, especially if I'm already chatting my head off somewhere. This morning when critter had just called was actually my first time on the computer today. ; )

Speaking of my one-year old, he just took the world's shortest nap. I'm so bummed...I was ready to hit the sack myself!! lol

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Same here..minus the one year old. LOL I check when I think about it and so far I have been pretty lucky with the timing : ) Good thing too because It doesn't look like I will have a bingo this game before anyone : ( I still have alot to go on my card and I think a few must be getting really close.

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

How many do you have?

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Everyone has been rather quiet about how many they need etc. I am having so much fun with the thread, it really doesn't matter if I Bingo or not...and of course as you know from the last game...LUCK is NOT my middle name...LOL

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

lol I knew I was doing bad, but then maureen posted she had ten and I figure some people might have even more and then boy, oh boy...I must have the least of everyone here. hahaha Prolly every last one is on my list. ; ) Haven't looked for sure yet, though. ; )

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I am afraid to tell how many I have or need yet.I don't want to jinx myself.LOL I am sorta like you Janet in my Luck with these Bingo games. I really do enjoy playing though : )

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Well, I'll jump in to say I only have a measly 7! I really suck at this game~lol. I was close on the very first one (for me...about three games ago, I guess) but the last two I've never even been in the running.

whaaaaa

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Planti, I'll be your friend. ; )

So cedar, what's going to happen when you win TWO boxes?? lol Make sure you tell critter NO REPEAT LEAVES. lol jk

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

ROFLMBO @CJ You know... the last game I only needed 1 for I think the last 7 calls and I still never won. It's still fun playing though anyway.Oh...now you got me thinking tho ; )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Are we having fun yet? LOL ;-)

The next call is a micro-mini that I got from the Violet Gallery, but it's no longer on their web site, and it's not in FC. I googled, and found one by that name at Lyndon Lyons, and I'll bet it's the same one... LL describes the blooms as "cupped" where I would term them "bell," and they don't use the term "micro-mini," but I think I'm going to say that it's possible to match this one to its description.

Anyway, how cute are these blooms??!? This plant is no more than an inch and a half across...

I had to show you this leaf baby.... teensy!

Childs Play??

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I have that and I love it so I sure hope I got it right : )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, you did! I'm glad somebody has it, as I'd love to know how you grow it... Mine got stressed and suckered like crazy, and those little leaf babies suckered in turn. I've got a couple of little suckers growing now in my leaf containers (with vented lids), and they seem to appreciate the extra humidity... any tips would be appreciated!

Do you have a photo of yours to share?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL I had little suckers all over too!! Is that a trait of this particular plant I wonder??.I had it bloom beautifully only once and I just loved it.Practically needed a magnifying glass to see the blooms though. Not near as pretty as yours Critter. It wasn't no bigger than 2 inches across if that. I had it domed before it began to sucker horribly.I became so frustrated I finally gave it to my mom.She seems to have a gift with them. She keeps all her minis in a terrarium and has really good luck with them that way.I will check to see how it is doing and have her snap a pic to bring back on Thanksgiving.Come to think of it I think I will ask her to bring a few leaves back too so I can share : )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm starting to think that a terrarium is the way to go with a few varieties... 'Winnie the Pooh' and 'Midget Gumdrop' are two more varieties that sucker nonstop unless I have them growing in a closed leaf tray.

My poor 'Child's Play' only looked that good for a short while after I bought it... it actually grew into a totem pole shape with a zillion suckers, took a while before any of the suckers got big enough that I had even a chance of separating them. I'm not sure I'm cut out to take care of micro-minis... but they sure are adorable.

(Zone 1)

See .... I didn't even know there was such a thing as a micro mini AV .... so much to learn here!

That is one cute little plant! And you mentioned growing the little ones in terrariums .... I love terrariums, have had a few over the years .... something more for me to think about .... a terrarium with just little AV's!

This one is not on my card. boo hoo

Somebody should be hollerin "Bingo" soon!

Lin

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Whoa...I was thinking the same thing...I didn't know av's could be micro minis. Must be for the indoor gardnener with no room for any more plants. hahaha

Doesn't sound like one I'd want. So, uh...what does a sucker look like??? lol I have in mind a leaf growing little burr pins (those things that stick to your socks whenever you go walking in a meadow). hahaha

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

A sucker is a tiny new "crown" that forms along the stem, often at the base of a leaf. In this photo of 'Rob's Cherry Soda', look where the leaf at the bottom of the photo meets the base of the plant, and you'll see what looks like a tiny new plant forming... That's a sucker. Nothing burrrrrry about it, LOL.

I have a terrible time with suckers especially on noids.I wonder why that is? Sometimes I don't mind them on named avs because I kind of look at them as an "instant" new baby plant. But when they get out of hand and all I get are suckers and no blooms it really upsets me : (

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yeah, I often let a sucker grow if I don't have a backup plantlet started... You can pop them off when they're very small using a pencil tip or toothpick (depending on plant size). Too many suckers does drain the plant's bloom-ability.

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

That looks cool! lol So if you pop them off when they're small, can you still root them and start a new plant?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, but if they're very tiny, it's hard to get them going. Looking at that picture, I think I'd wait until that sucker is at least twice that size before removing it to root. It's a toss-up, because you don't want the sucker to distort the shape of the mother plant's crown too much, either. If the sucker has a couple of extra leaves (especially tiny ones) toward its base, you can remove those to make more of a "stub" to stick down into the potting mix. As with leaves or with re-rooting crowns, a higher humidity environment helps keep the sucker crisp until it forms good roots. Rob's has a tutorial on their site about re-rooting crowns, and those directions apply to little suckers too.

I'm sure there are other threads or links with better discussions on rooting from suckers, as that's how chimeras are propagated. I think the biggest trick to it is managing to remove the sucker without crunching too many leaves on the mother plant -- if you lose the sucker, it's not such a big deal, but if you mess up your mother plant you're likely to wish you'd popped that sucker off while it was tiny! Oh, and the other thing is that sometimes two small leaves will form where a bud is forming... you can't tell it's a sucker and not a flower for sure until you see more than two leaves.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, time for a "night owl" call, and then I'm going to bed. I'm trying to unwind a little after a flurry of typing and ordering when I discovered that VanEngelen finally posted sale prices on their bulbs!

This one is a beauty that just stops people in their tracks when they enter the room.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Gorgeous baby! And I have it on my card! Yehhhh Ü

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes it is a beauty! I went to be about thirty minutes before she called it...I started to ask if she was still awake, thought she might do a late night one...I have that one too. I bet some people are really close to bingo! Maybe today or tomorrow...it is a rainy day here....not very pretty, but I guess we do need the rain..have a great day everyone!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, it's 'Rebel's Splatter Kake' -- another quick ID! :-)

I have one pot of leaf babies for 'Rebel's Splatter Kake'... I can see I will need to put down another leaf this winter!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)
