What's Growing - Part 11

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

OMG Gram made a funny!

So you're planting those gateway eupatoriums now huh?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Al, are you trying, in your own subtle way, to tell me it's a bad time to plant eupatorium? I just checked my records...it's actually 'Little Joe', not 'Gateway' (sorry about that). I was going to get some Gateway in the spring, but I picked up Little Joe on sale the end of August.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

No - I was making a gateway drug reference to having more eupatoriums.

Here is Chocolate eupatorium, just a fraction of this plant which isn't fully open yet.

here is that primrose/primula that I mentioned - pretty isn't it.

aaaaahh! I'm a little slow.

love the chocolate..does it get, like, 12' tall? your primrose is gorgeous...does it flower?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

primrose flowers in April and then fades out in the hot weather.

Chocolate is in full shade and is 3' or so - I'm waiting to post a full shot **running out of anything new**

Jeannie Leroux looks the best it has all year.

I was teasing you about the primrose (I'm not quite THAT slow ;-)

Jeannie is really pretty (I mean it, honestly)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

You're starting to catch on in your old age now aren't you.

was this your bee?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

probably one of them.

the problem with old age is that for every new thing I learn I forget 2 others LOL I always hope it's something I don't need, like the conjugation of a French verb, or how to calculate the area under a curve, instead of how to find my way home from work

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Gram and Al, the worse of old age in my opinion is that when I finally got comfortable to be myself, or comfortable on my own skin, I have discovered that is because my skin is loose... lol... oh well,

Gorgeous dahlia... Al, when did you plant that dahlia??? Dahlias are my grandmother's favorite flowers... next year I am going to plant some to honor her... it will be therapeutic for my mom... right now my mom is visiting my grammy and it may be the last time she will see her... so next year, I am going to get as many dahlias as I can so I can distract my mom and at the same time try to connect with even at a deeper level... I love my mom,,, so I will be asking you tons of questions...

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Kassia - you can ask questions, but I really don't know much about your mother ;)

I start my dahlias inside early and then plant them around 5/15, they do flower for 3 months or more.

Gram gets in her car after work 'Now where was I going again?"

kassia, you are too funny

that's nice about the dahlias to honor grammy. I know your mom will miss visiting her, so maybe she can talk to her in your garden among the dahlias. I'm going to give dahlias a try for the first time next year, too, so we'll have the same questions. are you ready, Al?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

watch it or i'll show up at your house :-)~

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I'll look for a car with the left blinker on driving slowly down the middle of the road. (:} ))

Have you thought about where you would have them? If it's a new bed it wouldn't hurt to work it up this fall yet and improve it.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Awww, that's sweet. what a nice invitation :0) do the bigcitykids need an extra gram? I bake a mean cookie.

Springboro, PA(Zone 5a)

Well, this is what is still blooming here in NW Pa. Some of these--the foxglove and the poppy for instance--are just practicing for next year. I have some other roses and mums, speedwell etc. I didn't include but this pretty much covers it.

you've still got a lot of nice color there, early_bloomer. have you had a frost?

Springboro, PA(Zone 5a)

There was a bit of frost on the car one morning last week but that's been it so far. Last year it seemed I was covering things up at night for most of Sept.

EB - nice colors there - well done. I recognize most of those, that red and white one in the second pic is a poppy?

hey I have a picture of a weed ;) I think this is called toad flax? Nice flower

was there a limit on cosmos pics? hope not, this is my favorite coloring

Al, I love those, just like little snapdragons. No limit on the cosmos unless they stop being pretty...don't think that'll happen.

Wellington, OH

Weed looks like snapdragon.

I have never seen a cosmos - well, not that I know of anyway. That one, and a dark pink one that Pixie posted last week, look like watercolor paintings....just beautiful. Kay

bigcityal,
No, that's my Fourth of July climbing rose. It's a favorite of mine. It bloomed like mad during June and July and now has quite a few buds and blooms again. The poppy is top left in the first photo. I have a lot of flowers here that are confused this year and are blooming or getting ready too. The first heavy frost will cure that.

This photo is from back in July.

This is what is growing in my yard today. Sorry that it is a bit out of focus - I'm still learning my way around my new camera. Anyone know what it is?

Gee, Al you are not sure?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Gram, I'm late on the response but you cracked me up.
I have chocolate Eupatorium too. Its quite big. You can use Al's picture for mine. (Yes Gram, I'll get a note)

Early Bloomer: Mabe you should change your name to late bloomer! Very pretty. Lots of color for the middle of October!

Al, A week or2 ago I finally got tiny buds on your dahlias. Than a deer came and gobbled them.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Al, I also got that weed... I had no idea it was a weed... it looked so cute I let it grow...

I will give dahlias a try ... and I am going to have to do the beds next spring... can't fool around anymore...

I love cosmos... did you plant them from seeds??? I am going to buy seeds from http://www.americanmeadows.com ... I feel like buying a pound to make sure I have all kinds and colors....

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I meant to post a picture of the cute weed...

Dave - you can rent my pictures that fine. I actually sell most of mine to Lake House Creations.

I do demand a written apology from the deer!

I did have another one open up -real nice.

Kassia - nice weed!

Al, Do you make cards and invitations too?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Here are a few pics of what is left in my yard. The vase was rotated to allow a view of the different Dahlia's left growing. They were either tubers saved from last year or wintersown this year. I am curious to see how the w/s will grow next year from their tubers and how big the tubers are.

Al - do you wait for the dahlia's to die from a frost before you dig them up?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

duh...here's the pic

BTW...what is the variegated leaf plant at the bottom of the lg. picture? My brother gave me some, but I have never known the name. I stuck it on the side of the house that gets only a few hours of morning sun. Is this correct or should I move it? Any advice would be welcome!

What can take 4 mornings worth a frost and still bloom? Mostly snapdragons, but these were taken this morning.
