here's one of our friends, kind of a pool mascot, we call her Shelby. the little one is T.J. (turtle Jr.). probably should have saved this for when when I ran out of flowers, but I'm using it for filler
What's Growing - Part 11
Anita - you stole one of my flowers already and stuck it in your vase huh? I do like you arrangement there. I wait until a frost to lift them, you can cover them to prolong there life too. It's looking bad for the end of the week here. The seed dahlias had big tubers for me.
Dave - no I don't make cards. I was just organizing my photos - talk about a junk drawer.
Gram - stockpiling turtle photos now.
Thanks everyone - the gnome I made in ceramics a few years back. I don't think he has too many years left. I'm almost afraid to move him.
So, what's this??? Dave??? Pictures????
Well, gosh Dave, those were really nice. Now was that so hard? if we could just get you to identify the pretty flowers (hee, hee)
Kass, the turtles have a pretty nice home there. and they are much livelier looking than my turtles lol
My Dave`````what long arms you have. Looks good! What do the deer all eat there on you?
Sharp pictures Kassia
Dave ~ Your Toad lily is wonderful! How much sun does it get? I have mine 4 years and still only get 2 flowers. What am I doing wrong?
Dave is that T. Miyazaki?
I have to look this up. some of the species produce flowers all along the branch at each leaf petiole, then others - like Tojen only have flowers on the tip of the stem, and sometimes clusters branching out from the side.
I just got in from the backyard. I don't get back there much anymore because the days are shorter and I'm gone most of the daylight hours. But I wanted a record of what's still out at this time of year.....not much, I'll tell ya'. But a few things still look nice. The yellow one is my birdseed flower. The dahlias dominate, but two are still non'bloomers. Looks like any day now. The little wildflower seed packet I planted for Hannah (next door neighbor) is what you see behind the dahlia. Then there's Dooley. He's eighteen years old and a very happy cat.
Nap ~ I love that deep crimson dahlia! Thats just gorgeous!!! I can't believe Dooley is 18...he looks maybe 5. You must of given him a nice life with a lot of love and care for him to live so long. They are just like another kid aren't they?
me, too on the crimson dahlia and Dooley :-) pretty kitty...give him a scratch behind the ears for me
now that I've decided to enter the exciting world of dahlias, how the heck do I decide where to start......Al, Nancy, anybody....HELP! are any of them easier to grow or bloom than any others or do I just pick what's pretty (aren't they all) and give it a whirl? do you usually get them to bloom first year from seed? I'm thinking smaller investment if I screw up.
now look at this thing...rhinoceros trying to escape from China or a fungus amongus...you decide
gram
I vote for the rhino!!
I like banana chips, or at least I did......don't think i'll ever look at them the same though.
sounds to me like you all have been eating them!
I think Anita's jealous because we didn't save her any ;0)
you bet - I love psychedlic
Al - another question about dahlias....sorry. Sometimes I see them at the nursery that are already started in the spring. I've never noticed if they are just the short ones or if they also have the bigger ones too. Do you know? Would that be a good way to go? Or is planting from a tuber better? I assume that if I order from Dan's that I will be sent a tuber? Oops, more that 1 question - maybe you could just take your pick :)
Kay
Didn't mean to ask, "Do you know?" Of course you do.
Kay - the cultivars you see in the nursery you would need to know to tell the height, or you can go by the tag - sometimes not so accurate. Tubers will be cheaper even with shipping - yes you would get tubers from Dan's - they pare them down a lot better than me - looks like a sweet potato with a pinky.
Thanks!!! I've chosen a few that I want to order.
Not fair.
my, that is gorgeous, Al. do you cover them? is that the same one Nancy had in her collage earlier?
Dooley wants you all to know he loves the compliments. He said to tell you he keeps his youthful appearance by eating right and working out. He loved the ear-scratches, gram, and he said yes, he absolutely is like one of our kids, pixie.
Al, the dahlia on the bottom left is Pooch's 'chimacum topaz' and it has been the earliest and most constant blooming dahlia I have. The dark red one is Cornel, and here's a better picture of it. The top left is Orange Snooker and I like it a lot. I love the color of yours too, Al.
Gram, I got my dahlias from DG'ers who had leftovers after their trades, and offered them up for postage. Watch the dahlia forum in the spring. I didn't get any from Al, but it sounds like he'd send you some. He's a pretty nice guy.
Pixie, I like that Double Click cosmos! Is that the only color it grows?
