Morning Glories 2006 #7

Beautiful photos, the depth of field is remarkable especially under fairly low light conditions. Congrats!

arlen - yes,the rust seems to have a partcular appetite for many plants with Ipomoea hederacea in them...apparently Natures way of keeping the plants in balance...

The spores from the rust can multiply in the soil and can even get transported on seeds...best to discard any soil from 'innoculated' containers and remove affected plant parts asap...

Your photos are (as usual) very clearly focused and show fine detail...>exemplary(!)...

Thanks Joseph and Ron,

Joseph, I've found that I get good DOF results on the close-ups by stopping down (f8) and using the flash. The flash also really picks up (or exaggerates!) the sparkle on the surface of some flowers, http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/125104/, and the shine on others.... http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2729874

Ron, the rust is everywhere around here! When I visited the local I. hederacea stands this weekend, I was amazed at how the rust had consumed them. I didn't see any on my first plants in the cooler weather. Is there anything one can use to control it this time of the year....I'd like to figure out a cultural method for a consistent second crop if I could. Is it specific to Ipomoea?

Arlan

Arlan,

Thanks for the info on attaining the impeccable depth of field. I will have to play with my film camera settings and see what happens.

I contacted a plant pathologist at U. of Delaware, and he stated the rust is maintained in pine trees and unfortunately for us it lives on our JMGs as a secondary host.

Pretty tough to get rid of the pine trees....guess I'll learn to live with it.. Thanks - Arlan

Ukigumo, such a pretty! found this one blooming on my east fence yesterday morning

Ukigomo is very reminiscent of Blue Silk, very nice!

I thought I would post a few of my MG's for this year. I received from generous DG'ers about 32 or so different JMG seeds which I carefully kept separated and marked and then set them all out together and totally got them mixed up. So now when I collect seeds this year, I don't know what I have. :(

Anyway, I have some fantastic blooms.

Hi Susan,

They are all very beautiful and unique each in their own way. I would be interested in trading for #1 if it makes seeds for you. Thanks for posting the pictures!

My Chameleon

Started out as blue silk now its pink silk!!

Two colors for the price of admission wow!

I have a Blue Silk that volunteered in the garden from last year's seed bank and its flowers have a nice wide band of white around the edge of the corolla; I like it very much. I hope it makes a few seeds for me to try next year.

Ronnie - The 'pink' is probably from the cooler weather...

Here is a photo where the large 'umbrella' type of outdoor laundry hanger is used for an Ipomoea tricolor Blue Star MG trellis with excellent results >looks like a real MG tree(!)..

Looks somewhat like a datura with upward facing flowers...large sturdy beach or table umbrellas can also be used...or a similar structure could be made from wood or pipeing...extra tiers could also be added on top...

The large tub around the base is sunk and has the bottom removed...this type of design frees up ground space and no need to worry about the lower leaves falling off...

I've seen people add hanging baskets and lines from the outer ends of the ribs attached to the ground for a MG maypole(!) effect...

Ron

P.S. - Reminiscent of the old cereal commercial >"I want my Maypole"...

P.P.S.. - the clothespin bag is still visible on the front left of the 'laundry hanger'...

Gravity won - Emma's Yagurama is puddling on the ground. What a great idea for giving a vine altitude! Thanks, Ron.

Thanx Joseph. I was shocked when I saw the star shaped petals this am.
1st time I've seen that on my flowers.

My plants are like dancers putting on a show. The last act is about over and then it`s curtains for the morning glories and hardy tropicals...and I will then take a long winters nap.

Not! I`ll be doing a major clean up,collecting seeds, digging up stuff that needs stored, mulching, then planting bulbs, reorganizing flower beds and it never ends. :)
