I DID count Dave. I didn't count you.
Aw, Al, I am kidding ! Of course I counted you. And Dave.
That's...um...a lovely picture, Al.
What's Growing - Part 10
OK. Even though we officially cancelled winter this year - it looks like it is coming anyway. So what the heck are we going to take pictures of to post? Obviously Al is struggling with the question already.
That's a really nice picture, Al! Love the flower. Could you put it on a white background, please?
Well, here's something a little different. As you can read, I decided to see what grew out of the birdeed my careless sparrows let fall to the ground.
I don't have any idea what it is. Maybe someone else will know.
Nancy, Great idea. Don't know what they are but they're pretty and the seed is cheap.
Nancy - I would think that is a type of sunflower, but most of the sunflowers the chipmunks plant from birdfood looks more normal to me.
I'll work on your pic for you, that is the good view btw.
Al ! It reminds me of sweet pea's or monks hood
Al, that really is pretty with the white background, don't you think?
It ocurred to me to read the seed bag, and sure enough it says what's inside.
white millet
red millet
canary seed
guizotia
abyssinica/niger
fine sunflower chips
for the winter we could lurk on one of the warm weather forums and steal pics ;0))
or we'll just have to be content with talk about what we're planning for spring. and pics of winters landscapes
OR...we could join Al and post pics of silk flowers and/or plastic toys
what did you guys do last winter?
pix, my other clematis on that obelisk is dry, yellow and disgusting. this one has a flower bud on it. it is supposed to be a rebloomer, but I guess nobody told it when LOL
gram ~a girl~
here's a little cup of posies left in my fairy garden
Yankee,
Those tomatoes look good. Do you grow basil to go with them?
You bet! I have green and purple opal basil. The tomatoes are sauce tomatoes. I didn't get a single eating tomato other then cherry sized tomatoes all year! Sigh.
ok, some more purple...
about the 15 contributors to this thread.... you guys seem to be a pretty regular group of friends talking for a long time... maybe that's why so many people look only.... but I am bratt and I know Gram because of mini roses and so I feel like I can just come in... this way I don't bother only Gram and Laura with my millions of questions...
I have some questions for you guys:
Dahlias - just now mine are really nice... they all were gifts from friends that came from Home Depot... now if I really want some fancy ones, do I start from seeds??
Gladiolas - I digg them up, what do I do now?
Do I just cut the black eye susans, daisy, pink cone flowers, or do I let them dry and dye completly? If i save the seeds do wait until april to plant it directly on the ground or do I have to start them in the house?
ok... enough questions!!!!
thanks
Kassia,
That's beautiful! I love the pinks and purples. What kind of rose is the delicate pink one toward the bottom left? And the darker pink single?
Loretta
Kassia -

How do you think we all became friends??? And for any lurkers out there - YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME!!!
Kassia,
I was referring to the first of your 3 collages--the pink roses. I looked at some of your rose threads--so many beautiful ones. Yours too, Gram.
Lurkers - yeah - join us. We get tired of teasing Al about his fake flowers. We need somene else to tease. Especially since it will be winter soon and we will all have to post pictures of fake flowers and plastic bugs to keep in pratice.
Absolutely! The more the merrier! More photos. More laughs. More friends!
Oh, and Kassia, for years I have just left the dead coneflowers and black-eyed susans lay on the ground. (I've pulled the seed heads off and thrown away the sticks.) And they always come back faithfully by themselves. This year I'm going to try starting some in the house too because I want to give some seedlings away next year to a charitable organization. There are threads about it, but Anita knows quite alot about winter-sowing, right Anita?
And Al is the local dahlia expert so let's wait for his answer to that question.
I have a few glads, but Scarlet777 is the one with those answers. I leave mine in the ground because they're right against the house. This keeps them a little warmer, I guess.

Kassia - I'm fairly new here and new to any serious kind of gardening. Love your collages; your flowers are lovely. Now I have a "dumb" question. In your first collage, left side, the lavender flower - my first thought was that it looked like a clubhead cover (golf); what is that?
K
Yes Nancy - I've found the wintersown bug. I love it and it saves me lots of money. For anyone interested..they all start seeing more activity now that the prep season is upon us.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/coldsow/all/ - This is located here on Dave's
http://www.wintersown.org/ - a great reference site
Kassia - get in here! And anyone else out there lurking. We aren't even remotely exclusive and besides that - I think many of us got to know each other via this thread during the summer of 06.
Pixie - I got a big surprise in my mail on Saturday! Thank you. Now what shall I send you?
Me too!!! Thank you so much!! I can't wait for January!!!!! That's when I start wintersowing!
Hi everyone, I've been lurking all summer. I enjoy gardening ,but I am just getting used to having a computer and do not have a digital camera as yet. I have enjoyed reading your posts which have given me more knowledge. Your photos are fabulous . I find you this forum to be very friendly and you have had me lol many times. Al, I had lacy leaves also this summer ,like those you posted on 23rd. Had a bad hail storm in July here and all my canna and host leaves had holes in them but they still bloomed. I like to garden to bring in birds and butterflies.I Have a question for nap. I have glads next to foundation on south side of house. Would they be OK there?
Hi 1tjl - and welcome. I have a question on glads also. I planted 75 corms LATE this summer (thought I had 60, but they multiplied in the bags). They did not bloom. Are they going to be any good for next year? I dug one up and it has the orginal corm with another stuck to it's side...do I keep both? I'd appreciate any help. Thank you. K
I've never grown anything from seeds....sounds like a good winter project.
Welcome 1tjl! You don't have to post pics to join in!
Anita
See, now all the lurkers are going to come... it takes a bratt to do this... lol... and I aggree... you guys have made my days many times with your posts...
Kayleen, that's a purple liatris... I just used the macro on my camera to get just a section of the plant... I love really close shots that shows details... and it still blooming because I planted so late in July... I am glad I did... now if I can just time them I can have it for a long time... I love those plants...
Anita, I saw that site on wintersow... and I want to do it... I have been saving some seeds and I have some seeds from Brazil that I could not get them started at all... next February I am going to get a heating mat for those but in June or July I want to plants from Brazil direclty outside and see how they do it... I am collecting milk gallons and chinese food plastic containers already... I just have to think where in my yard I am going to do that...
I think you will enjoy it. I gave me something to do in the middle of winter that had to do with gardening. Plus growing from seed is alot cheaper than buying plants from the nursery in the spring. You also have a larger choice of plants to choose from.
Kassia aka Brat,
Coneflower seeds i collect once the entire head has blackened and dried out. Echinancea will germinate better if they have a couple months below freezing. I let them dry out and put them in plastics bags and then they are stored in my unheated garage. Rudbeckia don't benefit as much, any of those could be started early inside or outside later. Echinacea will not flower the first year so starting them early is not really a benefit. Rudbeckia(Black Eyed Susans) will flower earlier from starting them earlier.
Kind of had this feeling someone had been watching me all summer!
15(16 with YankeeCat) isn't bad for a thread, I know of forums with less than that.
Dahlias - I have been happy ordering from Dan's and Aztec, this is one of the better links
http://www.dahlias.net/dbiglist.htm
This is my reseeding cosmos corner bed - past it's prime now.
I'll have to get scarlet here to answer the glads questions, but I suspect they will be okay, tjl. I guess your winters are similar, possibly warmer than mine, so next to the foundation is probably safe. Say a little prayer over them. Works for me.
