What's Growing - Part 10

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

It's me! I'm the one in Depew who likes coral! That is very pretty, really. And I love blue, so this is my lucky day.

I also like my lavendar perfection.

Very nice Nancy! That is a big poofy flower alright.

old business: gramagirl - I would move and or divide your asters in the spring. I did some of mine this spring and they didn't slow down at all.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Kayellen,
Your spot might be a little borderline for most roses. I remembered this old thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/14649/
There is also a link in that thread that may be useful.
Dave

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Kay, Dave's right. Your zone makes roses a challenge, but not impossible. However, most need at least 6 hours of sun a day. If you're determined to try a rose there, I would ask over in the rose forum. there are several folks who have wonderful rose gardens in your zone and colder who may have suggestions for a shadier spot. If I were you, I would look for something else that would be happier in that location.

Dave and Gram - Thank you......I appreciate the honesty. Dave, I will check out that site for possibilities.

I could already see the rose I wanted in that spot - I can change the place, but not the zone. Soooo, I'll just have to start "seeing" something else there. I really don't like to push the zone on plants and put them where they'd rather not be. Just makes it hard on them and me.

Again, thank you, I'll think of something. K

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Kay, pushing the zone is really not the problem. you just have to be careful to pick something hardy, but there are plenty of roses that will grow to z4 and even 3. it's the lack of sun that concerns me more. if you have a spot that gets at least 6 hours of sun a day we can find you a nice red rose :0)

I have a mini in my garden that should be hardy in z5, it's probably 2 1/2' tall, 2' wide, a nice clear red, blossoms are small but it's covered almost all summer. here's a pic I took 2 days ago. I've never had a disease problem with it. 'Red Sunblaze'

I mentioned Knock Out. a very popular shrub, tough, hardy, disease resistent, easy to find

RUBY MEIDILAND is another shrub with those same characteristics...here's a link

Trumpeter is a z4 hardy, relatively trouble-free floribunda

Hi Gram - Ok, the adult kicked in and I'm over my disappointment. I'm going to time the sun in different spots. My husband says that we get 6 hours of sun on the west side of same building, but we can also get some nasty winds out of the west. The south side of my house has some nice shade trees - very much appreciated in the summer - but plays havoc with flowers.
Same with the east.

There are so many wonderful plants out there that I'm sure I will find something equally beautiful if a rose won't fit.

You are so appreciated. Many thanks for your time. I'm checking out the sites from you and Dave tonight.

I love it, what's it's name. looks like a double flower. big plant, too. tell me more, tell me more!

btw, those mums are gorgeous. the purple one is absolutely packed with blooms. couldn't ask for better than that. I've never been a big fan of white flowers, but i'm liking them better all the time. that white mum is a beauty.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I only paid $2.99...they had dark pink, light pink, and what looked like a white. I believe it is 'Elsie Purnell' but not positive as it has no tag. This is where I found the closest picture. Tell me if if you think it looks like this. http://www.baumschulen-biermann.de/shop/index.php?cat=KAT0151&product=B14930085
BTW..mailed out seeds to you yesterday.

Great pics, as usual.

Al - I thought you weren't going to post pictures of the silk flowers anymore???

One of my mums is really kicking now - I'll have to get a shot of it when I'm home [I'm at work]. Otherwise, my yard is really starting to wind down. Very sad. The only bright spot is soon I can plant my bulbs and garlic and then before I know it, I can start wintersowing!! I still can't believe it's almost October!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Anita ~ please post your mum when you get a chance. My pink one is all in bloom but the other 3 are just starting. Daylily "Autum Blaze" still has a few more buds on it, and one more bud on "Please Say Yes" otherwise I have cosmo's, pansies, coneflowers, sunflowers and an aster blooming.
BTW..mailed out seeds to you yesterday too.

Woohoo!! Now where's that mail man???

Does anyone want some 4'oclock seeds? I'll also have Butterfly Weed and I always have tons of Rose of Sharon. I have a few Balloon Flower [blue] seeds and I can always harvest some Moss Rose.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha Ha Ha! Anita, I think I stuck 4 o'Clock seeds in your batch! But I did send you some daylily seeds too.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I would like some 4 o'clock seeds if they're still being offered. I was given a few babies this year but they didn't make it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave...I think Anita can help you out! LOL I gave mine all away but I do have Red Lupine seeds, yellow single Hollyhocks and black single HH, Columbine (woodside strain), pink mallow, allium, and various daylily seeds. If you are interested in any, d-mail me your address and what you want..Lupine's, HH, or all?

BTW...once you grow some 4 o'Clocks you will never have to look for seeds again. My Grandfather had them the entire length of the driveway when I was a kid. Every fall he had me out there gathering seeds to plant them again the following spring. They were there until the year my Grandmother died, then he stopped gathering and planting. I do it now, in memory of them. (just realized this should be on the musing forum! Sorry I rambled!!)

You got it Dave - I'll send some out to you. ;-)

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

playing catchup here..just finished work

Al..thx for the aster info, I'll wait for spring to divide/move

Kay, there's lots of wonderful things you can grow, but if you love roses, find your sunniest spot and give one a try. they can be very rewarding.

Anita..it is NOT almost October...take that back!

Pix, that could very well be your calluna. I just got a little book published in the UK and there is nothing even close in there. whatever the name, it's a beauty. most of them have pretty tiny flowers. they make a show because they have a LOT of them. that is very, very pretty. enjoy! I've had mine for a year and a half and none of them are that big.

Anita & Pixie, Thanks so much. Pixie you have D-mail.

Gram, I love your new sign-off. Tired of people being confused?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Ok Gram - sorry - it's almost the end of September.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Well it may be the end of Sept. but it felt more like Nov. this morning! Did anyone get frost? 75% of Maine got frost last night, and it snowed on top of Mt. Washington on Wed. Night and it dropped to 22 degrees! It was in the 30's around here last night.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Cold here, but no frost. It's 47 right now.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Same here on Long Island. I needed a jacket this morning.

Wellington, OH

Today I stopped at the nursery just to check if their perennials were on sale. Should not have done that - absolutely not. Bought 4 mini stellas and 3 branford ferns on sale (also veronica speedwell) - 10 percent off. Anyway, the owner told me that there is now a red mini stella, but that it is very expensive. Said he was going to wait a couple of years for the price to go down. Bet that is going to be a cutie. K

E-mailed Dan's Dahlia and he is sending me a catalog. Figure I have a while to make a decision on that.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Should be able to pick 'one' out of there.

I'm in to summer reruns, but new photos

Oranges and Lemons gaillardia still looking good.

What pretty anemone, Al. What kind are they? My anemone serenade have been blooming for about a week. I planted them behind the lavender to hide them from the deer.

Let you know. Just know you can't stand the suspense :0

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

took some time off from work today to plant some stuff (got some dwarf conifers for my heather garden so I'm working on those first). 12-hour days are seriously cutting into my gardening time. I can check in here once in a while on a break, but that doesn't get anything done outside. just finished mulching my little abies koreana and the rain started.

New York aster 'Wood's Purple' is in full bloom now. the pink one is just getting started

gram ~a girl~

ps wasn't so much that I was tired of people getting confused, but a couple folks had taken to calling me 'gramps' and it was my own fault for picking this screen name

Thumbnail by grampapa
Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Al, Are your's anemone elegans? I have them and your's looked the same.Mine have been large and blooming profusely for about a month
I think its a great late summer/fall bloomer.
My anemone sylvestri (sp?) is so lame by comparison. I was enticed because it blooms winter & fall but unexciting X 2 is still unexciting.
I wonder how much these experiences vary, garden by garden.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

You know I'm not sure, it was bought at a backyard sale. I think it said japanese anenome. We do have some windflowers that are so so.

grammergirl - we can still call you gramps right. Your aster looks good, I am wondering what my 'Alert' is, I bought 3 of them and 2 are lavender and the other one is purple.

Kay - I'm fine - good try. I still have a few to open here yet.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Al, you can call me anything you want, but I might not answer LOL

my clematis 'Dr Ruppel', that I planted spring '05 and gave up on this year (I mean there was not a speck of green showing above ground), and then it came up again this August, is growing by leaps & bounds. there are 5 decent vines 3 1/2 - 4' high on the trellis. it's a type 2 that blooms on new & old wood, so I'll bet it'll put on a decent show for me next spring. can't wait to see it.

gram ~a girl~and sticking to it~

Gram,
The clematis getting going now is odd, isn't it? Mine is turn an unfavorable yellow color and looking pretty sad. I really want to cut it back but am afraid to as it's getting pretty cold here fast. Your Aster is amazing! Thats so full and perfectly shaped, it should be used in a sale catalog for plants.

Beachwood, OH

Did you know this forum is open to all - members and non-members alike? I just found that out.
If there is no red asterisk on the big page, it means the forum is open to the whole internet.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, alyrics, this may not be such good news for you then. Even if it were only open to subscribing members, there would still be many thousands of people who'd have access to it. If you only counted the States in the Northeast, there would be a couple of thousand people. But if you consider that everyone...Northeast or otherwise... United States or anywhere...who has paid the membership fee, has access to these pages, then the number of potential eyes who could read your words, skyrockets.

Perhaps only 15 people contribute to this thread. At this time, though there have been about 150 posts, there have been over 800 views. There are plenty of lurkers.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Al, Most of these anemones are japanese except multifilda and sylvestris.

Yes alrycs its out on the internet. So you shouldn't post things you don't want others to know. Not a huge deal but I don't post info about my kids. The address exchange may not be the smartest thing either.

The fact that I'm a struggleing gardener with a corny sense of humor, well that's pretty much common knowledge anyway.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Quoting:
Perhaps only 15 people contribute to this thread

Don't exclude Dave now - that should be 16

People actually look at this - I better straighten up my act.
