This was on the side of the road at the entrance to a farm. What a beautiful Autumn display!
What's Growing - Part 10
Wow! And again I say, Wow! Those are fantastic pictures! My goodness!
Thanks nap...but I can't take the credit. Maine is beautiful especially at this time of the year. We saw a lot of out of state cars, "Leaf Peepers" are out in full force! I can't blame them...I live here and still think it's an awesome sight!!!
gee, too bad I'm allergic to gorgeous views, I'd snap it up in a minute. that library is a gem. is it very old?
Pixie - Those are wonderful pictures - what a place to live - and what a nice drive that must have been!! K
Gram ~ Not a library....I goofed! It's actually a church as my DH had to pointed out. Can you tell I haven't gone in a while? LOL
The St. Barnabas Episcopal Church was built in 1903 with stones taken from the nearby Androscoggin River.
Like I said, I have a "thing" for stone structures so I must have a library picture some where!
I was over at the bulb forum and someone had a link for heirloom lilies, so naturally I had to check it out. Well im here to tell you (especially Dahlia Al) YOU should check out this site out if you like Old Fashion Flowers! It even gives the date to when the flower was first started....1665, 1895, 1903 ect... that's impressive! Here it is... http://www.oldhousegardens.com
pixie, i've seen libraries in old churches, so that works.
al, that hydrangea must make a gorgeous bouquet.
does anybody grow astrantia? there's a thread on the perennials forum. I looked it up and I love it! hardy to z4, pinks, white, purples, long bloom time. guess it's more common in UK. they have lots of them at Big Dipper..very pretty, too.

Al, that's a beautiful hydrangea. To me that's the color a hydrangea should be. I'll bet it dries beautifully. You do dry them, don't you? I didn't have many blooms on mine, but they are dried and in a vase in front of me right now.
Al, don't waste them. Just cut them off when they're done and break off the leaves and stick them in a vase - no water. They'll air-dry all by themselves. At least try it this year. Otherwise, I'll come and get them myself!
Nancy - hop in your canoe and make the trip Marquette and Joliet style I say, bringing back heaps of flowers from strange western plants.
Isn't that funny gram...I was thinking that I would love to give that plant a try. I was checking to see what seed was available out there.
Hi everyone.... I had school last night and when I came home at 11:30 I was so tired I turned on the computer and the fell asleep with the laptop on my stomach... I woke up around 4 am and all I could feel was this heat in my stomach... I was still loged in DG....
I don't have long shots of my yard that I really like but I will post so you guys can see how much grass I have to dig up next year... I have big dreams... ask Gram... she is helping me with the design.... I have a list of plants that keeps growing... and growing... just 25 roses so far... but how about all the lavender, dahlias, cosmos, marigolds (yes, I love marigolds... this year I want to find the ivory color ones...) zinnias...
Laura gave me sedum and I split into 3 plants... veronica, ferns, a bleeding heart, hostas...
I have foxglove, white datura (just getting seeds for a purple datura from someone on DG - very nice woman!!!)....
these are just some of the roses I want....
this is my favorite indoor plant, that I am afraid to repot... it's 4 years old, have never been repotted... I can't really see the pot... and since it blooms all the time I have no courage to repot this plant... it's actually 2 plants that desperatly need a bigger vase... they come out every spring and come inside every winter... and they love me even when I neglect the poor things...
Ok, everyone, this is my "garden" well, I consider the beggining of it... I have tons of grass to get rid of ... I am happy to do it... I keep dreaming of things I can do to make it origianl... I have a baseball post and basket - that we never will use... the electrical cable is right on the top ... so I plan to remove the basket and do something to hang plants there and make it original...
So, here are the pictures... some are back from summer and spring... some are now...
this is the front of the house
under the tree I have datura, pink cone flowers, daisies, foxglove, liatris, hostas, impaitients, begonias, and some other things... and even lavender... some should not be there...
the 2 bottom pictures are the very front of my property... I moved some marigolds there so it looks cherfull... I aslo have lillies panted in thre... is very sunny part of the yard...
a closer view on the front...

Kassia,
Thank you for sharing all the pictures of your gardens. It's no wonder that you're exhausted! That looks like a lot of work.
Sorry to be offering advice on topic long abandoned...but I thought that this might help Kayellen in her quest to grow roses...I did something a bit different with some roses last winter...they were planted between 4ft high wall and house which cut down on wind exposure, but I wrapped them in burlap, and then (here's the unconventional part), put a cage around them to keep the deer away and for extra protection, I fastened some heavy guage plastic to the sides of the cage. The cage was made of chicken wire and slightly higher than the rose itself. The plastic was fastened with a staple gun and I pinned the cage to the ground with landscape staples. This reduced the wind exposure further and the wall radiated heat and light colored house reflected heat. Those roses had buds in March in their little micro climate.
Lily - I just gave up on the idea of growing roses....but come spring, I may change my mind and give it a try. I do a burlap cage for my magnolia (which is about 5 foot tall and 4 foot wide) to protect it from some of the wind and it is doing great. Thank you for the information - maybe I'll just start with one or two roses next year and see how it goes. K
I have over 250 roses. About half are the new Knock out Rose.
Even if you have never liked or thought of having roses this is a MUST!!
It has a grey/blue/green leaf (lovely color) and actually does better in the shade or partial shade. It also blooms well in full sun!! Is free of disease, and black spot. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SPRAY!! People come from all over to check out my yard which is in full bloom now!! As the roses love the cool spring and fall wet weather and really put on a fantastic display! That is a reason in it self to have roses. They flower when most other things are dying down.
My suggestion is to go to Lowes or Home depot now as they are selling out their roses for the year. They are half price and if you plant now they will have a great start in the spring.
They need no protection and nothing to do til spring. At which time you can prune out the dead canes and just watch it grow!!
