Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks

I'm sure I'll have Chimacum Topaz next year to try that.

I haven't been able to post a pic since earlier also

Hey Al, at least now we know your sweet BigCityDog has a face :-)

here's my 'what's blooming' from yesterday'. that spider is about 2" long and 1 of many in my pool. there were a ton of the wolf spiders (still are), but I don't know what this one is

So many great pictures, so little time to respond. Couldn't get on DG last night.
Anita, great mantis pic!!
Al, I really like Alma!
Everyone, great pictures!

My newest glitch is my computer stopped downloading from my camera. I checked all connections-- no idea why its happening.

Perennial sunflower, anemone, rudbeckia, dahlia (not Al's), chocolate eupatorium, roses and zinnia are still doing well. Use your imagination.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram ~ Im going to guess here....
Aster, Wiegelia, hens& chicks, fushia(sp),strawbwrry candy, and many beautiful roses. Am I any where near right? LOL Great pictures, except for the spider. YUK!!! I would not be in that pool if you paid me!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Pix...you get the prize (don't know what the prize is, but it's NOT the spider). hasn't been near warm enough to swim so I've been leaving the spiders in peace..they drown anyway. the hens & chicks have got their regular color back. in the heat they bleach out and get pale green.

I got that pic to post but haven't been able to do any since.

hey, pixie, how's your brother doin'?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram , Thanks for asking about him..he's doing much better. no longer has to wear the sling but still has to wear the "bra" until everything is healed. It's a slow process when your almost 60! He's not as pretty color wise as he was, its almost all faded now. But it still hurts to cough or laugh hard and he won't be skiing or dancing anytime soon! He did go back to work and is thankful for that, he was bored silly at home and tired of reading books.
He still needs help w/making the bed, laudry ect. but can cook again and I'm always up for eating.(grin)
BTW, Wiegelia is one of my favorites, I had one but it had a run-in w/the mower.

Wellington, OH

Hi - I kinda' like the spider picture - he looks neat surrounded by all that blue.

Pixie - I'm glad your brother is doing well --

Question - anybody, everybody - If you could buy only one rose and one dahlia, what would they be?

Thanks, K

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Kayellen, Not sure which I would choose but I'd be pretty bummed.

Wellington, OH

Dave - that's not one of the choices - bummed is a given :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Kayellen ~ I'd ask Al about the dahlia and gram about the rose.

Gram - I don't mind the spider. As a funny side note; I was talking to a lady while working last week and a bat was flying around during the day and landed on her house, I went up by it to check it out and she just about passed out. The aster is nice.

Kay - 1 dahlia - I guess I started out with 1. You would want one that blooms a lot then, this thread had a lot of those in it.

Pixie - is that like Ox eye daisy or boltonia?

Pixie - here is my Autumn Joy sedum

Not the greatest photo of Lilac Time, but I could either get the color close or have it in focus.

Al ~ I think it's this: http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/55247/
It sure looks like it. What do you think?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You went for color...and what a beautiful color it is!

Wellington, OH

Al - that is absolutely gorgeous. I went to the site you recommended - got 50 names that I'm in the process of looking up. But can any of them be better than this one? K

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

K - let me know if you have any questions about any of them.

Pixie - I need to check my wildflower book - I'll get back to you on that.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Pix - that's it. I was wrong - ox eye is a type of heliopsis wildflower(all yellow)

One common problem newbies have with dahlias is they are not prepared to stake them as well as they need to be. I use rebar and 1" wood stakes.
Because you never know when one will get to be 88" tall(for now) Ferncliff Copper

Oh, geez, I've looked at all of them (well, not all were listed in plant files).

Cactus, semi-cactus, decorative, decorative formal - I think I got that pretty much figured out by now.

Al, I do have a question about flower size - Bodacious and Bablon Rose say 8-10 inch flower - is that big a flower going to bow its' head?

At the moment I'm leaning toward Haley Jane, Lavid, Edinburg, Park Princess, Sweet Dreams and Lilac Time. Do these sound good?

And I love the white one, Karras 150.

What is rebar?

K

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

K - no, the big ones stay upright pretty well as long as they are tied up and the whole branch doesn't break with too many flowers.
rebar is covered in this thread
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/559258/

You know I have Karras150 and am not overly excited about it. There are many whites, you really need to pick the style you like.

I don't have all of those on your list(otherwise they would be in PF)

Dan's has a nice site to look through
http://www.dansdahlias.com/

anyone else betting she buys more than 1 for next year**he he he**

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Al,
That was evil. I went to that site and now I want more and I'm not even successful at storing them!!! I bet that was an evil "he he he" too.
I looked at 39 pages worth, couldn't pick just one but i could pick just 2. I can picture theses 2 planted together for a combo. http://www.dansdahlias.com/product_details.php?category_id=0&page=9&item_id=102 with http://www.dansdahlias.com/product_details.php?category_id=0&page=16&item_id=184

I bet it was evil too, Pixie - but he's probably right :)

Ok, then, I have heard of rebar. We just had a footer and concrete floor put down for a new garage. The guys cut holes in my lawn - asked husband what happened - he said that the men had cut rebar there (with a torch or something, I think). We have lots of green fence posts - 4 foot and up - I'm thinking that would work. Maybe too tall. I'll make it work.

Al, please give me the name of a nice white dahlia. I CANNOT do any more looking. I've already used up 2 weeks of my computer time. Please?

I'm saving Dan's dahlia site for tomorrow.

Al, thank you so very much - I really appreciate your help. K

Kay, I keep trying to post a nice picture of a beautiful white dahlia, but the powers-that-be won't let me. I'll try it in Dmail.

Thanks, Nancy. Seems to be some problems in posting pictures right now.

K

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nancy - that must be the same one in your collage you didn't list ;)~

Kay -I like this one of Pooch's
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=2664378
I have extra white ones also if you wanted any next spring.

Pixie - I am familiar with Eveline(actually it was in a Walmart combo last spring) I have one similar and nice also. The Juuls one is nice.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

No, but I think I may have gotten over the photo-posting problem. So trying again.

(Darn, it didn't work again. But I did get to send it to Kay in Dmail.)

Kay, I'm wandering in here kind of late. You're looking for a rose? Gonna have to pinpoint it a lot more than that. Where would you be planting it? How many hours of sun? what kind of exposure? what zone are you in?

then, what are you looking for in a rose? color, fragrance? rebloom? How large would you expect it to get? are you willing to fuss with it or do you want something you can put in the ground and leave alone?

Wellington, OH

Gram: You're a sweetie to take the time, but I just have to get off this computer or my husband is going to come in here with a butcher knife. I'll get back to you tomorrow. The one answer for sure is that I want it to be as easy to take care of as possible. I'll think about those questions while I sleep.

A big thank you. K

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Kayellen, I would suggest a climber, rambler or a shrub. They are much easier to care for and give much more bang for the buck. They have ones that bloom heavily and often which I would choose over some gorgeous roses that only bloom in June. Some of these will take a bit of shade too.
As I have mentioned before, I have these and don't spray them and some of my shrub roses are near the curb and get hit by the snowplow with ice, salt & sand & still thrive.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Exactly what I was thinking Dave. Probably a shrub. a lot of climbers and ramblers can be a pain and tough to winter over, or disease prone. depends on what you choose. and some of them are once bloomers. also you have to have the space.

the knockout series have an excellent rep for disease resistance and are coming out in a lot of new colors. a 3x3' or so shrub. also very easy to find because they are so popular. the original is red, Jackson & Perkins now has Rainbow that a coral/yellow blend, there's pink, and blushing knockout that's a pale pink. plus there are some of the older shrubs Bonica is very nice, J&P also has several colors of Fairy roses

if you are looking for something with a more traditional rose form (that looks more like a hybrid tea bloom but without the constant spraying and problems), there may be a floribunda that will suit you. I'll wait to hear from Kay today before going any further.

Wellington, OH

Dave and Gram - Thank you - I'd say you're right on track.

Gram, to answer some of your questions:

Planting where? next to a building that is natural wood color but looks a little yellow to me.

Hours of sun? I think 4 or 5 in spring and summer. Less this time of year.

Kind of exposure? It will be facing east - on a south corner. Protected from the west (building) and since it's on the southern end of the building, I should think somewhat protected from the north.

Zone ? 5 and I cannot tell if it's a or b.

How large? Well, I don't know. I would say no smaller than 2' and no taller than maybe 4' or so - actually, that wouldn't matter. Can get as wide as it wants to.

Rebloom? Oh, yes.

Fragrance? Don't care.

Color? Red - a nice clear red. Not bluish or blackish or purplish. A Christmas red? I think lighter colors will blend into the building.

No, I don't want to fuss with it a lot....I could handle a little fussing. But mainly I would like to think that it will grow on its own without me hovering over it too much.

Thank you, thank you. I really appreciate the help. K

Wellington, OH

Al - I went to the wedsite (the one with the white dahlia). Is that a Christine's White? It is really beautiful. And, yes, I would love one of your whites for my garden - but you must let me repay you for it in some way. I don't have any "named" plants to trade - I never kept their names.

Don's is a great website. I'm going back there when I more time to browse.

Thank you so much for your help. K

Oops - Dan's

Is what one Christine's White?

You can always just pay the postage - not too bad really.

BTW - I was at the arboretum where they developed the knockout series last year(Boerner)

Someone in Depew likes coral I heard.
