San Antonio area Plant Swap -part II - Oct 14-15

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahh ok . . . that sounds pretty good . . . when is the best time of year to trim them? Jan. - Feb. like most other trees?

Oh and thanks :) That pic was one the better ones of about 20 I took . . . lol

This little black & blue one was sure pretty, but between the wind blowing and him crawling half way inside the flowers . . . he was hard to get a good photo of.

Very pretty gold and black butterfly.
You can trim the tree after it looses the leaves.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok good deal . . . Thanks Josephine

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

From what I was reading about the snout butterflies, the mass migration is the result of the drought, which killed off most of the parasites that usually keep those butterflies in check in South Texas. Then the snout population exploded south of our area and they started flying northward. But I haven't a clue why the yellow and white ones are more numerous now. Nada, you have Monarchs there already? Any Monarch caterpillars? I've only seen Queen caterpillars on the milkweeds so far.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I don't have any milkweeds. one plant I haven't gotten to grow yet. only have seeds.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I keep finding those striped yellow/black cats on my potted parsley plant on the back porch. I can't tell if they're monarch cats or not...but they smell awful....lol

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

TX T, Your dove may have had a jolt of electricity if you have wires close. I don't think it would be west nile with missing feathers. Could be a cat too, they are pretty slow to react.
I love the Desert Willow, I need to add that to my list for the Dallas swap coming up.
Great pictures.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

oooo...thank you Josephine, you are truly a sweetheart yourself.. :)
I've also got a lovely rock rose bush....do they grow well from cuttings?

Thats probably true about the poor dove, Sheila....I can't imagine...it didn't have blood on it anywhere...and it couldn't walk....but all of its feathers were off of its chest...? Just a sad situation...it literally fell out of the sky almost at my feet....and we indeed live near one of those huge electric towers.. I was peeking out the back door watching these men waaaaay up there working on the lines....which is exactly where my roosting pair of red tail hawks stay each night.. lol

Those are funny look'n Red Tail'd Hawks up there TxT . . . lol

jus fun'n ya . . . great pic actually. I painted billboards for several years, so I'm not afraid of heights at all, but I don't do electricity!!! So better them than me up there.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...is that little itty bitty person actually you, GD?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol yeah that's me up there on the cat walk . . . if you look closely you can see my stuff on the opposite side. I had just finished painting the side I'm on and had moved my stage and paint around to the other side. You can also see my 'pull rope' hang'n down the other side over there. :D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...I've seen that sign...its in New Braunfels...isn't it?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol yeah . . . if it's still there . . . that was several years ago. It may have changed copy by now, but yeah it was right in the parking lot of that shop'n center on the left as you head north thru NB :D

If anyone happens to have any of the following especially the "Hoya curtissii" I would love you to bring at least a cutting to the RU. I found an Hoya curtissii I wanted... it was 25.00!... And of course they don't have any little starter pots of it.

Hoya curtissii
oscalaria deltoides or lampranthus
pencil euphorbia
proboscidea
kalanchoe
gibbaeum fisoides
sedum nussbaumerianum
cordyline red sensation
Aeonium
euphorbia lectea crestata
crassula rupestris
lophocereus schottii
rex begonia escargot
other rex begonias
iresene chicken gizzard

thanks. Just found my old wish list .... plants I haven't found yet.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

The proboscidea...is that the wild Devil's Claw? I found some seeds for that one...probably the P. louisianica.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

yes. it is also called unicorn plant sometimes.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I could bring you some of those seeds when I come up there, then.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

thanks that would be great.

Wimberley, TX(Zone 8a)

Nada, I have quite a few plants to bring to the RU, and some may be on your list....I don't know the botanical names of EVERYTHING I've got! I DO have kalanchoe, of which I'll be bringing some. I've been doing gardening projects for other people lately, but this weekend I plan on doing some more propagating and I should know soon what all I'll have. I'll post them later, when I know!

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

cool thanks.. just let me know if there is anything from my list you want... I haven't propergated before so I need all the time I can get to work on it. *g

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

wow....where did everyone go?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey everyone,

Just returned from Mississippi Late last night about 10pm and then picked up Tanya my DW, at the Airport 2 hrs. later 1200am. We stayed up late looking at pictures and talking about her trip. For those I haven't shared with, Tanya went to SRI Lanka for a humanitarian trip with the Suenomy (spelling?) Victums. She had a great time and met lots of wonderful people. The kiddos were with my parents while DW was oversees, hence my trip to retrieve them and bring them home.

short post, need to keep moving to keep up with all the activity in DG. Will post again later.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Glad that your DW made it back safely and is back at home, Calvin... :)
I reckon that all of those tsunami victims are still needing alot of comforting and aid work. What a giving heart your DW must have.... :) Hope your plants were ok while ya'll were away, lol......

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Txt thanks for the thoguhts. DW was really uplifted but is suffering from a little jet lag. I lost 6 solar flare tomatoes and 1 scented geranium. That was it. Great out come considering no rain.

calvin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well...thats good.........I've got some scented geraniums myself...lemon, nutmeg and rose/lemon.......wonderful scents!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi TxTurqoize I would love to trade you for some cuttings of the scented geraniums, is there anything that you are looking for ? Rita.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

For anyone wanting to make a test trip out my way..... Our housing area is having a community garage sale this sat. d-mail me if you want directions. Plus there is a thing called Boerne trade days downtown where lots of vendors come and sell all kinds of stuff, from food to plants, to clothes, to handmade furniture. Would make a great day trip for someone wanting to see the country and maybe get a few good deals.

nada

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Rita....Do scented geraniums take to cuttings easily? I haven't tried yet...but I definitely will.....I'll put your name on my list as a reminder for me to try, lol. I can't think of anything that I'm really trying to find right now..except a 15' oak tree for the back yard, lol.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

txt.. I have at least two different kinds of small oaks growing. I saw them the other day. Both are about 2 foot high right now.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Really, Nada? I wish I could plant an oak youngling about that size, but like I told GD....I can barely dig a hole large enough to fit a coffee can, much less a hole that would accommodate a much larger tree, lol. As you know, since you are a bit close to me...the soil here is comprised mostly of clay and rock....and incredibly difficult to dig....

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

15' oak tree, hmmmm that should be easy! How else have you been propogating the geraniums, many years since I had them , I think it was the hard wood that was used in the cuttings. Rita.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

if it doesn't get much bigger,,,, it is exactly the size of a small coffee can hole.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, the geraniums are in pots....NOT in the ground.......And unless I can rent a sod cutter....there is no getting a shovel even 5 inches into my backyard.....It actually takes me a couple of days to dig a hole large enough for a gallon size pot............well, ok...maybe not a FEW days...but it does take a long while, lol.... plus, it seems that alot of building material is right under the bermuda grass, i.e. concrete, sand, limestone....as well as the native rocks and hard clay.

Wimberley, TX(Zone 8a)

TxT, If you've got the time, you could plant an acorn! Those are easy to plant around here!!
Propagating scented geraniums is easy. I just take a good looking tip cutting several inches long, remove the lower growth (at least 2 leaf nodes), trim off any blooms, be sure to leave at least 2 leaf nodes above the soil, put it in a pot (w/soil!), and keep moist. I've got a fair amount of rose scented geraniums to bring to the RU.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

mmm...I just love them, dogmansis.....and there are so many different varieties....I've got one of my lemon ones suffering with scale right now....so I may try to take a healthy cutting and try again with new soil....I seem to have ALOT of problems with scale on a few of my plants and one of my tall cacti, which is actually infested with it. Frustrating and I'm not sure what to do at this point, since I detest poisons... :p

Bump

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Everybody, I have a favor to ask, and it is that since it hasn't been decided whether we will have the swap on Saturday the 14th or Sunday the 15th,
could we please have it on Sunday?
I have just discovered that I have a class on Saturday the 14th, so if it works out for everyone Sunday would be better for me.
However, I don't want to inconvenience anyone, so if that doesn't work, I will just have to figure out how to get the plants down there to all of you.
Sorry that this came up, please let me know.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Sunday is fine with me . . . hope it works out for everyone else too. :)

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Sunday is fine with me but I think the girl from houston needed sat (sorry still getting names and towns figured out)
