San Antonio area Plant Swap -part II - Oct 14-15

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Cool cabinets ya got there TxT :)

I have another plant that grows wild out here that I *think* we just ID'd as - Clematis drummondii - aka Old Man's Beard. It's in seedhead stage now, so if anyone wants some seeds from this one, let me know.

Here's the Detail page for Species Clematis, Drummond's Clematis, Virgin Bower Vine

I posted a few more pics (and close-ups) on the ID thread here - http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/644562/

I would love some seeds, please?
Josephine.

I'm reeaal familiar with that fuzzy stuff. We grew up with it down home and use to pick tufts and stick em' behind our ears and around our head to get instant hair. lol...Sure made a mud pie look real neat too...lol :)

lol TxT . . . why am I not surprised about that :))

Ok Josephine, no problem on the seeds. Is there anything I need to do with them?

Also, can ya'll confirm the ID on this one? Is the one we've narrowed it down to correct?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

It sure looks similar to htop's photos, GD....but some of those other photos posted by other folks on plantfiles don't look like our particular fuzzy vine. Hmmm....must be what it is tho, I reckon.

lol @ not bein' surprised... what? I bet you did it too...lol :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh...and hey...I had my big black fuzzy bug ID'd as a Beelzebub Bee-Eater...lol..what a name..! Sort of an interesting little critter tho....

I've seen a few of those around here... never had a camera when I saw them though.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah I saw that over on BugFiles . . . I'm guessing by the name that these guys eat honey bees? I may have to stop be'n nice to them if that's the case.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

GD,....I'd like a seed or two from the clematis as well....please sir,...if you have enough!
I've not seen one before....I 've got a few of the clematis pitcherii (purple leatherflower) growin' and would be tickled to have one of these!
Thanks!

Does anybody have any experience or knowledge with geminating seed from a Black Tupelo or Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica)? I've several on our property....and one of my smaller ones bore fruit this year....I'd like to try & get some babies started.......I've tried in the past with no success....
I've stratified in the fridge.....placed 'em directly in my growin' beds....scarified....I haven't found the key yet! Hopefully,...some one may know what the trick is! Thanks! Lee

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

No problem Lee . . . the seeds seem pretty plentiful on this one. I'm not sure what to do with them after I collect them (other than put them in a bag and save them) but I'm sure someone here will know :D

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Lee, are the seeds very hard? If they are, this treatment works for many of the hard coated seeds. Pour boiling water over them and let then soak in it for 24 to 48 hours, however long it takes for them to plump up. Then plant the normal way. I have tried it with hard coated seeds and it works really well, they germinate fast.
Josephine.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes Josephine,...the drupes are similar to the way a peach is configured...that being,...a fleshy soft outer body,...with a hard (seed) exo/shell with the soft seed within.....the squirrels love them and cut a hole in one end like they do a hickory nut....(after the outer flesh has
decayed away). The hard shell case is what I cut a little opening into....with a file or dremel tool....like you do with a coral bean or canna seed....that hard of a shell.
I've not used the boiling water treatment....but I'm about to give it my first try! I sure would like to get some Black Tupelo babies goin'! :~)
Thanks Josephine! I'll let you know how things go!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Is it possible to just take a nail file to it and file the shell down? I did this with my moonvine seeds and was able to get 100% germination out of every seed I scored . I just filed on both ends of the seed until I filed through the outer shell. Then soaked for 24 hrs. and planted.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Calvin,...yeah,...I've tried that with no success with the Tupelo seeds.
Going to try boiling water bath per Josephine's suggestion....some seeds simply require a relatively longer time to germinate....like the clematis can be....the Tupelo might just be one of 'em!

GD - I've been tryin' to find info on storing clematis seed....seems that keeping in a dry ziplock - in the fridge should be ok - the seeds should be planted ASAP to benefit from the winter chill...also expect a possible 8 - 10 months (256 days for C. drummondii according to Brian Collingwood)
Since I've not been successful creating a hyperlink so far - just google "clematis from seed" and you'll find the site - (same name)
Very interesting reading with a germination rate chart for many diff. clematis including C. drummondii Lee

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok Lee, thanks for the info. I'll get a bag full today so we'll have plenty to expirememt with. I'm pretty sure these are ready to harvest, because when I was taking the photos of the plant a few days ago, the wind was up and there were lots of the seeds blowing off with the breeze.

My vine is FULL - as you can see in the photo- so I'll bring enough for anyone that wants them. :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

hey guys,

Sitting in the school library btwn classes and thought i would jump on and ask if ya'll are willing to take lab with me? Greenhouse lab projects start today! yeeepeee :)

We are getting to care for and multiply poinsettias and mums. Don;t know all the paticulars, but grade for lab is dependent on success rate of harvest and health of plants. I think I am going to get a lab partner but either way I thought maybe I would try and include My friends. Anyone up for lab class.

There is already , according to professor, spider mites infestation in greenhouse, so care and control is up to us the students, I can only be here at school on tues. and thurs. so my time is really limited, bummer.........:(

I thought about getting an spray bottle and mixing a vinegar or soap & water solution to try and deter to mites. not sure if this a good treatment or not?

Any way any takers. Success will be for all's glory and intrigue. the plants will be sold for hooliday cheer and a small boost to the horticultue department.

Calvin, the only thing I can say is, vinegar kills insects, but it also kills plants, I don't know how strong a solution would have to be before it would kill the plant, but I would avoid it. The soap solution works on a lot of insects and doesn't hurt the plants, so i would go with that one.

what school is this?

that's an awefully far way to go to water some plants! *g

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I know but I really hve no choice. My instructor knows I commute but can not help me in the assignment. I did get a partner, who lives in S. Austin, 30 Minutes away, and she says she is at school all the time. Between the two of us I am sure the MuMs and pionsettias will be fine. Our grade depends on it. It is nice having the opportunity to have access to a greenhouse. I am able bring some of my own plants over to it if I want and there is space. I wish San Antonio had a Ag. School. with FFA inthe high schools you would think that UTSA could make some money by starting a Agriculture school. I would go there instead of commuting 1 hr. one way trip. 2-3 times a week.

calvin

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I can understand that completely. I would love to take some ag type classes. I have taken a few continuatng education classes but there just isn't much in the plant/landscaping area.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

How neat, Calvin...Texas State is my old haunting ground. I earned my bachelor's degree in Fine Arts there in '89. :) *Ahhh, ole Sewell Park and the San Marcos river* :) I use to hang out around the fisheries with a good book....lol.. :)

I've actually been rolling around the idea of pursuing an education and license in landscaping myself... sounds interesting, from what one of my part time employees tells me...who also works for a landscaping company.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Yaaay....I have my first Pride of Barbados bloom.. :) Plus a little fence lizard was caught hanging around and bein' nosy.. :) Can ya'll see the baby lynx spider in the middle of my bloom? (Off to work...catch ya later) :)
