Guys, Brug is short for Brugmansia, a type of datura, the kind that makes a small tree and the flowers hang upside down, and it comes in many colors

Well, I had never heard that term before either, and it does sound very strange the first time you hear it.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Take a peek at some photos that I took today. I've had yellow butterflies swarming around my salvias all day....some white ones too....just gorgeous.... :)

Yeah I'm with ya there Frost . . . I had not heard that before myself.

Very nice shot Txt . . . did ya'll get a chance to check out my butterfly pics from a few days ago? I had a ton of'um out here this week . . . yellow, white and those pretty black ones with colored spots. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/631775/

I just came in from mow'n/shred'n . . . so I needa shower and a snack, but when I get done I'll tell ya'll how you folks have really messed up my mow'n out here . . . I feel terrible if I mow over ANYTHING out here anymore . . . lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lolol....I'm just as bad, GD....tho I move crickets and grassyhoppers out of the way... :D

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey I weedeated the front of my lawn (house) by the street but did NOT distroy the orange daisy I have there.. And when I mowed my little lawn... I had to go around the bee (something).. (purple flowers... stalk. ) and another flower I still have to ask about.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

ok that's not the flower... although I don't know what it is either *giggle

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol Nada...

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

and I even PLANTED that one! *giggle I know.. I bought it and planted it. But I either didn't get a tag... lost the tag..... threw out the tag..... or someone or something took the tag.....

And since my mind is about as long as a worm... I have no idea what it is! *giggle

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol....yeah, my name tags sort of disappear on me...either that, or the scorpions are draggin' em away to get back at me for relocating all of them.. lol.. ;)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Nada, the plant in your picture is a Columbine.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

did ya'll know frostweed is a dict. of plants? so far she has managed to tell me nearly every one! *giggle

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I just love Texas Native plants and I study them a lot, but I sure don't know everything.
Just glad to be of help.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

hey.. I'm glad too... now if you wanna know anything about mainframe compluters... I have all that stuff in MY head!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol @ ya'll . . . Crickets & Grasshoppers ?? Those don't get out of the way on their own? They do around here . . . or else . . . lol

I've been very careful here lately to avoid as many of those Cardinal's Feathers as I can. And trust me . . . there are literality hundreds of them on this 6 acres out here. And now I'm try'n to watch out for about 10 more things too . . . thanks to ya'll . . . lol
Of course most are pretty wildflowers that I enjoy anyway. But until recently my dislike for grass burs outweighed the majority of other things growing out in the fields. Now I find my self thinking . . . ok there's not any grass burs by that one . . . I can mow around it and come back with the weed whacker and trim the coastal that's shooting up around there. Good thing my Kubota handles so good, I'd be sore after two rounds out there. . . . lol

Nice TxT . . . I see ya posted a few more flutterby pics :) And that's a neat look'n Columbine ya have there Nada . . . Glad we've got Frostweed to help us greenhornz out around here ;)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol....I know how ya feel, GD....and tho I always wanted to live in the country on a fair amount of acreage....having to be selective during a mow-down would be tough on the old senses...lol You're the one who keeps finding these wonderful and brilliant little flowers...! lol.. :D

Ohhh..I was going to ask ya'll.....ok, so I went and popped open a real dried out orchid tree seed pod. They almost took my eye out as it threw em all over the place, lol. I've got them soaking in a cup of water on the back porch until tomorrow. My question is, are they SUPPOSE to look like corn nuts? Or hominy for that matter? lol... :D Goodness...I mean these babies have swelled up! Someone let me know.....lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

ummm yeah but yeah but yeah but . . . I'm also the one that has to mow around here . . . what's a guy ta do? lol

Corn nuts? lol . . . well that's one way to describe them huh? I do think that's normal, but I've never seen this particular type seed. However, most the seeds I soak do swell up after they've had a chance to soak up some h2O :D

Here's a pic of a Red BoP seed after soaking in a damp paper towel for a week or so. It started out hard and a little flatter. The moisture made it soft and it sprouted the root about 4-5 days after it got all swollen up like yours :D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

oops . . . here's the pic

hey ya'll just went on break at work. I got some seeds for Pride of Barbados today, while out on patrol, I noticed the PofB had their seed pods all nice and dark and sounding like a babies rattle. So, as you can guess I put the pods in my pocket. these are the reddish orange and yellow variety. mor orangy than red though, at least I think so. still would like some esparanzas too. looking and waiting for the ones around where I work to set their pods and turn dark.

take care going to surf the plant files,

calvin

Calvin

I just harvested esperanza seed--mine is yellow not the orange variety. I have lots if you'd like me to put some in the mail, LMK.

My chocolate flower is putting out seeds. I usually just let it completely reseed where it is but if someone is interested in some of the seed let me know and I can bag it up.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Nada, could you save some for me, Please?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

certainly. be very happy to do so.... I just love these flowers... they take a licking and keep on ticking! *giggle and smell so nice while doing it.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, you are a sweetheart.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

calvin, I've actually have some BoP seeds soaking as well as the orchid tree seeds. Mine are the yellow versions listed as a "Texas Bird of Paradise." I'm just real anxious to see what they're going to do.

that is soooo pretty

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Nada.. :)

Josephine, I noticed that you have a Rattle bush, Sesbania drummondii on your list. I don't know if you remember but you helped ID mine some time ago...and at this point its now over 6' tall..lol. I'll have to take a photo of it....you can almost hear it growing! lol It hasn't put any seeds out yet...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh! that is so neat, I love the rattle bush, ours froze to the ground last winter, but it is up to about 5 feet from the roots, I think it is a lovely small tree.
Congratulations.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm not sure what a chocolate flower looks (or smell) like . . . . guess I'll have to look'um up. When's Dave gonna add a Click'n Sniff section to PlantFiles? :D

Same with a Rattle bush . . . how big do those get? I've got a spot that I'm need'n a mini shade tree . . . something that won't get over 6' to 7' tall but can handle lots of heat and sun to shade a bed on the west side of my house.

I had a palm (Pygmey Date) there but it was getting too large and over flowing into the walk way too far, so I transplanted it to the back yard. It's doing great, but now everything in that bed is take'n a beat'n from the afternoon sun.

lol @ the plant sniffin....now thats a idea!

This rattle bush that came up wild in my back garden...reminds me of a cross between a norfolk pine and a mesquite, GD....lol..if you can imagine that. Not much shade at all....real lanky and ...well...just sort of odd lookin'. It has little yellow blooms all over it....and quite honestly, I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps it might be a moisture stealer....I mean, this thing is growing by the day....I've never seen anything like it! It seems to handle that daily bake-a-thon back there...but it seems to get huffy and close its leaves up early in the day if it needs water. It closes up at night anyway...But I love the fact that it decided to show itself off in my garden.... :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

hey Txt I didn't realize the BOP was so light in colr and solid in color very pretty. Good Luck with the germination. Any seeds left over and I will take some. lol

Frostweed, you are a gift to the gardening world-- thank you in advance.

everyone, you guys and gals have so much to offer in the field of expertise and plants and, i know, so much more. It is really overwhelming and encouraging. I am being forced to keep up with the developing backyard to try and make room new family members (plants thant is). I am having trouble keeping up with the posts, lists, and everyones lives.....heheheeee

I LOVE This Daves Garden and Community Friends.!
