San Antonio area Plant Swap -part II - Oct 14-15

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Calvin,...lol...its got alot of new seed pods all over it...if this germination takes, I'll bring ya a seedling.... :) If not, then you'll get some seeds..lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

hmmmm . . . leave it to TxT to come up with a Mexican Pine . . . lol Sounds interesting but not what I need for the place I mentioned though huh?

I need to find something that has a little bit of a canopy and won't out grow that area. If it weren't for some plumbing down under the bed, my options would be a lot greater, but there's a water main line and a lateral line both where that palm was sit'n. Not to mention the slabs that surround that area.

Maybe I should just make a cactus garden there and not worry about the stuff that can't handle the heat. After all - that IS the kitchen window just above the bed :D lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

GD, cactus gardens are good no? Pretty, easy, low maintenance. not really on the design team for making a place feel.or give the feeking of coolness but great for visual effects.

TxT, Either way is good for me seeedling or seed. Thank you.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Indeed . . . cactus are pretty cool . . . That wasn't my first choice for this particular area, but not a bad option I reckon.

Ya know what Mick Jager says . . . ♪ ya can't always get what'cha want!!! ♫

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

GD, have ya ever heard of a catalpa tree? More of a central or south american tree....My parents bought one at a flea market many years ago....and the leaves are huge! Big ole heart shaped ones...and it puts out little white blooms. The leaves do shed in the fall...after a freeze....but its real shady... It may be too big of a tree for that space tho...now that I'm thinkin' about it... Its a fast grower tho....ya can always xeriscape with agaves, acacias....agaritas...etc. too.. (my favorite!)

lol, alright Calvin....I checked my seeds this am...they're plumper then a dog tick right now.. *blah* :p So I'll let ya know... :)

I just took this photo of my cluster of BoP.....they're really showin' off right now...what with all of the water I've been laying down on em'... Just as I was shooting away with the digi cam.....a whitewing dove sort of fell at the base of the BoP from out of nowhere! It looks sort of puffed up like they do when they don't feel right....and sort of dazed. My red tail hawk pair aren't around...and it was breathing real heavy. Now with no shade....and the sun starting to blaze back there...what should I do??? Leave well enough alone?

I can see it already....my Irish mama will find this to be an extremely bad sign of luck....lol.... but I'm feelin' helpless over here....

Help! What should I do? :o

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

spray some water on it. maybe it got overheated?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmmm....I don't know....but its not that hot yet, Nada...And the ground is wet where I've been watering the flowerbed...so its pretty cool right under him...

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, my poor wee little whitewing just died as I watched...sort of gasping and all... :( Dang...it makes ya think of West Nile disease.... :o *sigh*

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Not sure what to make of your little dove. Do you (or a close neighbor) have a bird bath out? Even if ya don't, I'm sure it knows where to get some water if that's what it needs.

It may have done what that little hummer did out here yesterday and run into a window or something? May just be a little stunned and will come around on it's own. Of course ya could always give it mouth to mouth ;) lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Aww bummer . . . you posted that while I was type'n . . . sorry to hear that . . . maybe it was hit by a car or something?

oh and no I haven't heard of the catalpa tree. I'll have to check them out.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I dunna know, GD....I put my gloves on to bury it...and its little chest was bare of feathers and real bright red? I'm not sure why...... Those dadburn fireants were already closing in... >:( Yeah, thankfully I have a bird bath...which is always busy, being next to the crispy cow pasture...

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Dang that don't sound normal . . . wonder what the signs are for that West Nile stuff? Hope that wasn't what happened.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

GD, here is a pic of my chocolate flowers. They look a little better earlier in the season but the heat makes them a bit scragly

Thumbnail by renatelynne
Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

sorry about the bird :(

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahh ok . . . nice Nada and thanks for share'n the pic . . . but where are all the chocolate bars? Guess you picked and ate them all already huh? lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Neat flowers, Nada......do they really smell like chocolate? Hence the name?

Well, I was right, I just got off of the phone with my mom and now she's thinkin' that all hades and brimstone is going to fall on my wee house...lol
Anytime a bird acts odd around my Mother, its BAD luck...and if one tries to get into the house? Whoa nelly......the world is comin' to an end....'course, she has a twinkle in her eye when she's lettin' ya know... :D

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

hey.. chocolate doesn't stay around my house for very long before it is GONE.

yes they have a chocolate smell.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol . . . well . . . don't tell your mom about my humming bird incident yesterday then TxT

I should have known Nada . . . just like a gal :p lol

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol....she's a wee bit superstitious... :D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Take a look at my little Red Dynamite crepe myrtle....its seem be doing really well in the front...and compliments the white of my limestone house.. :)

Thumbnail by TxTurqoize
San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Indeed that Red sure is pretty and does go well in there. As it turned out that crape I ordered a while back was also a Red Dynamite and it got here a bit wilty from shipping, but it's in a pot now recovering nicely in a semi shady spot. I'll likely plant it in my "knot garden" soon. (I still haven't figured out why they call it a "Knot Garden"?)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol GD....I don't know either....maybe ya could google it?

This little critter has been fluttering about my pink hyssop all day...I can see him out there right now....in the front flowerbed. He's shy tho...everytime I go out there...he flys away...so I took this photo lickety quick... :D

Thumbnail by TxTurqoize
San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol . . . it's been a flutterby day out here too . . . they're cover'n the BoPs again . . . though I haven't got the cam out yet . . . maybe I'll do that before they all get fat and go take a nap :D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol....I wonder why we're seeing em' in such numbers right now? I keep forgetting to set out a dish of sugar water for them to enjoy. :)

Are you seeing those clouds of snout butterflies out at your place? They're sailin' by my window in droves....

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ohh yeah . . . they're thick as thieves out here too . . . So thick ya can stir'um with a stick ;)

So are the white and yellow ones . . . not as thick, but still they're out there in large numbers.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Here too.....they're fluttering all out in the back as well as the front yards....I know the lizards are happy to see em'....lol ;)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

GD, I was thinking that for that spot where you need some light shade, you might try a Dessert Willow, Chilopsis linearis, you can keep it pruned to the size you want and the flowers are really pretty, they look like little orchids, and it is a Texas native, here is the link; http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/265/index.html
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

ooo...good idea, Josephine.....I love my Desert Willow... :)

Thumbnail by TxTurqoize
San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

They take the heat incredibly well also......

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yours is very pretty TXT, mine is a little lighter color, but very neat too.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

ohhh owwww ohhhh I want one of those! Those are pretty!!!!!! *giggle

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

When I go by my confetti lantana bush they just cover the sky. I haven't been putting out sugar water but I have been putting some water on the driveway so they can drink. They seem to LOVE it.

The snout and the white and yellow little butterflies are all on the lantana
The swallowtail, queen, monarch and white and yellow butterlies are all over the butterfly bush. it is just so neat to look at them all. I tried to get a pic of all of them but you can't really see the butterflies..

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We have a lot of swallowtail, both the yellow and the black on our Phlox, the really love it.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

That photo of my Desert Willow was taken in April....notice the incredibly green grass.....but it still has alot of blooms all over it ....I've noticed that alot of landscapers in my area are planting them around new stores like Walgreens, etc.

Yeah, I don't remember seeing quite the "profusion" of flying flowers that we seem to be having this year. I've seen alot of snout butterfly migrations...but the others? Not really....cept' monarchs.. :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahhh yes . . . those are pretty . . . how big do they get? (Desert Willow I mean - not the butterflies :D lol )

The Plant Files pages says:
Height:
6-8 ft. (1.8-2.4 m)
8-10 ft. (2.4-3 m)
10-12 ft. (3-3.6 m)
12-15 ft. (3.6-4.7 m)
15-20 ft. (4.7-6 m)
20-30 ft. (6-9 m)

So which is it? 6-8 ft or 20-30? I'm not sure why there are so many different entries for the same plant? I guess that's based on location?

I've got one little butterfly (not sure what type) hit'n the BoP pretty regular that has a messed up wing, but that's not stop'n him from getting his fair share of nectar ☻

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I have seen ones like that around my place too. don't know what they are either. YET

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I've only seen them about 8' around here, GD...course they were new plantings....Mine is about...hmmm....3' I reckon...I didn't know that they could get THAT big..! It'd be beautiful tho....what with all of those blooms...

Nice photo,..thanks for sharin'... :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

GD, the dessert willow is basically a small tree that can be maintained any size you like by pruning. They actually look better if they are pruned back every year, because that way they dont get all tangled, and produce a lot of flowers. I keep mine to 8 feet and it does great.
