San Antonio area Plant Swap -part II - Oct 14-15
Sounds like a plan...Nada......Everyone could bring a potluck meal...or we could all just donate to chip in for Rudys, etc....for those comin a long way. One foldin' chair, (check) :) Personally, I'm up for a Sunday...but as ya say, we'll see as the time gets closer.... Perhaps others can bring something for several door prizes? Bird houses, feeders, pots, etc? Some of GD's extra Spansh Moss? lol :D
Sounds good Nada . . . nice way to keep things straight too . . . I'll get my list organized and post it on the "People and Plants" thread soon.
:O TxT . . . I was gonna keep that a secret and surprise everyone with a bag of moss balls . . . lol
lol..didn't mean to let the "moss out of the bag." lol... :D Alright, I'm goin' to work..!
Got it the dates are on the calender. Couldn't decide which day to write on so wrote on both. HEHEHEHE The DW is going to think I am going on a camping trip. Plan to bring my fmaily if that is okay???
I wold suggest everyone pitch in for rudies. We don't want coolers for food and drinks and such taking up room for plants and goodies. Just a thought, I realize those coming from afar will have coolers to save money on travel expenses. I know my DW and I do.
check back later
calvin
Family is fine with me.. There is lot of room for kids to play.
I figured I would have tea, water and lemonade/koolaid available. It isn't hard to do and I usually have it around anyway. If you want something else. bring.
Nada, do you have some white datura already growing in pots or wild?
wild but it will be dead by oct. I will get some of the seeds from it and plant them.
I will also have seeds. Sometimes this one doesn't like to be replanted.

Ohhh....ok.....a few seeds would be great...if the replant doesn't take...
Anyone like Bulbine? I was digging up a couple of pieces that reached out and rooted themselves near my plant and thought about the swap.
I LOVE Bulbine... I'm afraid to plant it. Mine has been sitting on the steps in it's original pot since April and I have NEVER watered it (of course it has gotten the little bit of rain we have had). It is still going strong. Looks great and has flowers on it all the time.
I'm afraid if I plant it...... it will die.
Yeah I've got several. One that has been in my herb garden for about 6 weeks and several more that I put out more recently. Some are in full blaze'n sun and a couple in partial shade. They're all do'n fine so far.
This is my first year with these, so I'm still try'n to figure out what they like the best. The one that's been here the longest seems to be settled in nicely. It took it about 4 weeks to put out new blooms, but once it started . . . they just keep come'n and are all standing up reach'n for the sky.
The others that have only been out about 4 weeks are just starting to get fresh blooms on them and I'm hope'n they'll be like the first.
You should be safe to plant yours Nada . . . give it a whirl . . . if it don't make it, I'm sure Linda will bring ya another one. :D
Hi everybody have never been to a plant swap so this sounds like fun, do many people come. I could come up with Daturas Brugmansias and Cannas. Rita.
It all depends Rita. looks like so far we have about 8 w/ family (that I know of) but some may not say or know till we are closer to the actual date. Looking at other swaps that seems to be the norm.
Spring RU had a lot more that 8 people--try 38 or 48. Everybody doesn't post.
cool. be fun to have that many people around here.
Gd, could ya post a photo of your bulbine? I'm not familiar with it...or what the blooms look like...tho it sounds familiar.
Howdy Rita, come on in and grab a chair... :) And just to let ya know, we're takin' a collection up for GD...since he's too bashful to let anyone know that he collects rocks...absolutely loves em'... ;D
I think alot of interest is out there to attend the SA RU. I reckon more people will get more interested as the date gets closer, like Nada said.
I would love to go, especially to visit any place in Boerne! I love it in that town. But it will be late in my pregnancy, not sure I'll want to be out waddling around. Bwahahaha. =) I'd be one of those "decides-at-last-minute" folks. But could have some potted spider plants for indoors and some Mexican petunia 'katie' transplants as well. That's about it.
you shouldn't let a little thing like being preg stop you from coming! Teach your baby early about plants!
lol.....a "kindergardener" hehe.....
LOL!!!! That is sooooo cute TxT!
hehe...I couldn't resist, Tir_ :D
Hmmm...very interesting..! It almost looks like wild onion or garlic...the leaves I mean...are they hollow? Are they native to Texas, ya think?
And yeah...I'll take some hot tea...thanks.. :D
lol @ hot tea . . . not you silly woman . . . I was offer'n your audience another round :P lol
No they're not hollow . . . they're more like a mini Aleo Vera type leave w/o the stickers. Not sure where they're from, but I do beleive they are in the Succulent family. I think there may be some better images of these in the PlantFiles section. And of course all the basic info too . . . I looked them up once about a month ago and remember see'n a few pics.
Ohhhh.....well ya know...I did stand-up in another life...lol....(No, not really....) :D
Say, do ya think you could get a cutting or two out of the bulbine? Very pretty...and I do believe I saw it at Rainbow...the name is familiar...
lol @ stand up . . . I'm not EVEN gonna ask which other life that was :D
Ummmm . . . I think ya have to get these by seperating it from the roots. There's not really a place to get a cutting from, unless that flower stem would take root?
I bought a few and there were a couple of plants in each pot, so I divided them and kinda spaced them out a bit when I planted them. I'm sure they'll grow more and I may be able to get some from these by the time the meet gets here. Don't let me forget :D
Ohhh...ok...well...thats alright...lol, like I have the room....! But honestly, by the time the swaparoo gets here...I'm going to really have to get that new bed created....lol Sides', I'll pick one up at Rainbow in the upcoming weeks and find a wee spot for it.... I'm just all excited about it and thinkin' anyone, anywhere can bring me a cutting or plant...and I can give them a cutting or plant right back at em'...lol Neat concept.... If I start askin' people to get me a cutting from a toothpick...just bring me my ice tea....thats all that I ask.. :D
lol TxT . . . yeah I'm with ya . . . this should be a good time . . . poor Nada don't know what she's in for (inviting us over) now does she :))
I think Bulbine might be an African plant...adapts well here because it can take the heat and everything. Anyway, I potted up the two pieces that had rooted to the side and I'll bring them with me next October, somebody will probably take them. Are we allowed to bring a friend to this?
Yeah I think I recall reading something about that also Linda. And as far as I know . . . friends are welcome. :)
Here's the same Bulbine as shown above and how it's doing now that it's had time to get established in it's new home :D
Notice how many blooms it has now compared to 5-6 weeks ago when it was first planted. This one gets sun from daylight till about noonish.
Ah yes...I remember reading that on the label at Rainbow....that they were from Africa.....I'd still love to get one tho....My palm is from Madagascar...so I'm not a native snob... lol.. :D
Yes you can bring friends, family and the pet gerbil if you need to. *giggle
I was talking to the owner of one of the nurseries here the other day and she told me to remind her closer to the date of the swap but that she would look into doing something for us. That is part of what I like about small towns.. you get to KNOW the people.
I try to get as many natives as I can but if it will take the heat of texas without me having to baby it everyday... it is a plant for me!
Thats true for me too...Nada....I know that most of my plants are endemic to Texas.....but just about any low-water plant will thrive here...tho not ALL...
I'm with ya on the small towns. I grew up in a little town where everyone pretty much knew each other and on Friday nights, the neighborhoods were empty because of the high school football game at the stadium, lol.
The nursery tours sound fun... I'm always interested in finding new ones that I'll go to again....tho I'm pretty dedicated to Rainbow. But the way that you described these 2 nurseries, they seem interesting.. :)
Ask Calvin. he came up and I took him to them. Had a great afternoon shopping and talking.
Ok . . . slap me on the back of the head and call me silly . . . but what in the heck is a Brug?
lolol GD....:D
Ya see...I was wonderin that too...lol
