Who's got the biggest?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think Royal Hilo is leading the pack on size.

Beautiful bed, good job.

Louisville, KY

Bad seed are you sure this is Royal Hilo? I have not grown it personally yet but from what I could tell it was a green leaf form with red and white streaked stems? Yours looks a lot darker in the leaves like fontenesii. I would like to see more pics of it if you have closer views of the stems and leaves would be great I have something similar to what it being called Royal hilo these are new hybrids out of Hawaii tons of new forms will be on the market in years to come from what I have seen they are extremely interesting.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks guys. :)

Brian, I would not swear to anything. I got them from a friend/grower. They were sold to her as Royal Hilo. I think at one point she did question if others called them Red Stem. I'll probably have to wait until tomorrow to get pics as it is getting dark here. The stems are not nearly as dark as any Fontanesii that I have grown. I wil get you pics though!

I can't wait to see some of the newer forms! I'd like to find some totally different than what I have though. ;)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I took some pics and will download them in a bit. The kids and the pool are calling. LOL There are streaks on the stems and the stems are a burgundy red color with lighter streaks on them. I don't know if this source is reliable or not as I know nothing about them, but mine look like these, with less prominent streaks. http://www.centralfloridafarms.com/colo-royalhilo.htm I also noticed the leaves are sort of blotchy sort of like Chicago Harlequin if that helps any.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Well all the heat has finally started the A. macro shooting up.
Guess it's been doing roots all Summer.
We've finally broken 30" on a leaf.
Not too bad for bare root Winter storage and still in a pot.

Hey Michelle...lol you can say my name, its ok...

It was me that sent Michelle the Royal Hilo, I got them as tissue culture plants from Agristarts...so if you think they are reliable, then that info might help. I have to go look at my stems too, but like Michelle, mine are growing way faster in the size of the leave than any of the other varieties. I really like it a lot. It definitely is not the red stemmed, that I grew as well-the difference between them is very obvious once they mature. I will also post some pics tommorrow-where it is grown-geographically, as well as sun/shade may affect the coloration of the stems to some degree, so it will be nice to have pics of both of ours.

Louisville, KY

I plan to keep my part of the contest going on till Oct 15 sounds good to me we usually dont have frost up north till at the end of Oct.
For me I am looking to see the largest leaf on a Colocasia or Alocasia in both warmer and colder zones I will probably give out two rewards one for the tropical grower and one for the colder grower zone 7 and up.

As for zone5 growing elephant ears my reports on Colocasia pink china has said it will survive zone 5 winters with a good mulching so maybe one to try AuntB

Not really part of the contest but I would like to see the largest of each plant I plan to put my largest black magic nancys revenge and others up as they get larger. Some of these forms are just smaller growers and could never win but it would be interesting to see how well they can be grown.

Athens, OH

Brian-
Sounds like a plan. I personally would like to see large Hilo Beauty and cuprea.

I'll end the

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well,I guess when the trunks get bigger the leaves seem to get smaller.
About 3ft of trunk,2 ft of stems, and 21/2 ft of leaves.

I was confused on the Royal Hilo/Hilo Beauty. Want both, now. I'll attach a pic of what I know Hilo Beauty to be (from last year). Thanks for the China Pink zone tip, Brian. By the way, like your website....

OMG Don that trunk is about the size of my leg. What, do you have the pot buried in the ground? Also the leaves are huge. What is the name of it?

The one you have growing in the GH is a real pretty thing.

That alocasia looks to be the hybrid Portdora .

Here are mine from a few years back they are monsters now.

Nice little plants LOL.

Your "vision" is obviously distorted. LOL

Okay, here is a pic of the Royal Hilo Stem just taken. The ones I took last night were too blurry.

I found this dirty little three foot tall orphan and she agreed to stand in my picture. ;)

That one is really pretty. so if you are in OH does that mean it takes your cold? Wonder if it would take my heat?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sadly, I have to dig them all up and bring them all in! They should over winter for you. In the high heat they might need more water and possibly even some shading. I'll turn that question over to Brian or someone else. I'm only an expert in my own yard usually and my yard is new to me this year. LOL

Not an ear and not really a tropical but you have to add these to your tropical beds. These are super easy from seed.

Hibiscus Manihot.

Isn't the sky beautiful? We had some nice storms last night and today it is clear and the humidity has dropped. Looks like my ears will get another 165 gallons of rain water from my barrels. :) I have not used anything on my ears this year other than rain water and rabbit poo. They probably had Osmocote in their original gallon pots and the did get hose water then.

That is beautiful also. I will have to add that one to my wish list along with the royal hilo

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

If you mean the Manihot, remind me later and I will save you seeds. :)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Badseed, I thought I saw hibiscus in your tropical bed! (okay, I'll trade the amorph for the orphan lol, she looks like she's got a momma somewhere, cutie).. thanks for posting the pic, rabbit poo and rain water, huh? My BF's ex has rabbits, maybe this time, I could get some good "poo" from her!!!

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

cool thank you so much. I have a list of stuff I have on this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/630017/ if you want to trade for anything I have.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Bonnie! I guess I'll have to fess up and admit the dirty two year old is mine. She is such a riot and as you can see a messy eater and drinker! She has quite a vocabulary and attitude being the youngest of six girls. Life is short! I let mine live it up and get dirty. :)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That's great, dirt helps build the immune system.. Little girls that like to get dirty grow up and have gardens...Bless her, all of them! Think she has an attitude, now, wait till she's NOT the youngest! lol, I just love kids, specially when they aren't mine!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Boy, Badseed, I bet you did not say that with your first!!!!! LIVE IT UP AND GET DIRTY! Sure, I bet the kid lived in the bathtub for his first 5 years...LOL

Hap

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey Hap! Actually I did! Much to the angst and disgust of my 70 ish MIL who thought they should sit around in patent leather shoes, wearing hose with ruffled rumps on them! LOL I have six daughters that are happy to roll in the mud like little pigs or dress to go out for an occasion. :) I have proof! http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/69548/

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Good for you. Dirt never killed me and was in enough of it for any medical trial. It rounds you out!! LOL

That pix was priceless.

I see you beat me to it, Michelle! well, great minds work alike...

Hey sista! Meant to say up above, "I got your back". LOL My post was a "need to know" post. LOL

The pics I took last night actually showed the streaking better with a flash in the dark but they were blurry.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

here is a picture of one that is out in full sun ( 9-10 hrs/day) You can see that the stalk, while still having the striping, is less purple, but the stem is massive in comparison

And I forgot my leaf! LOL

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

lol I have been meaning to write you!

Heres a picture of the one in full sun, I think its safe to say that the amt of sun it gets definitely affects the color

How freaky is that green stem!?! Mine are in the middle of the front yard in full blazing sun all day long. There is one huge difference. Mine have lots of other plants in front of them and the stems are shaded.
