South Florida Blooms! \(^o^)/

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Another gorgeous one, Robert. 'Duke' likes to bloom late, doesn't it? Mine is just starting to open its flowers. Your ring is awesome, and you can't help but like that pretty girl off to the sides. Ah, I should have remembered that HB is much bigger than SP. Awesome.

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Clare glad you like it..
Using mylar underneath and feeding with the hormone "BudXL" will cause the flowers on the duke to turn purple and bleach out from the middle..

Mow the lawn today and ran over many flowers on the grass so i said hey lets make another ring..
Reds are so hard to shoot so i lowered the lighting to match colors..
Not my best work but didn't want to waste flowers..
The Miami Magenta with it's strong strawberry smell..
~enjoy~

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awe, I try to stay away from hormones if I can. I am liable to screw things up if I starting tinkering like you mad scientists! LOL!

You shoot reds beautifully. That is so cool with the fire thrower in the middle. That is a work of art! I'd love to have that on my wall. Maybe you should start framing these pics and selling them for a living, Robert!

When I get some time this winter, I'm going to want to upload many pictures to the PlantFiles, and many of them will be yours. You'll have to dmail me with your last name so I can give you proper credit. I'll consult you before I start that project:-)

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Clare..
No problem Clare sent you dmail..

I posted some bug problems on another forum...
Some user didn't know if Katydids were bad or good..
So here is some pictures that will answer that..

I think it was shadow (user) who posted about Katydids good or bad..
See for yourself..
Took me awhile to find one and capture it..

Went back into the house to get my camera and when i return he/she must have met their maker or makers..
The only thing i saw was part of his wing blowing down the deck..
:)
There are 3 kinds of creatures living under my pool deck, 1 of them eats flowers

the other two love big bugs so i am guessing it was one of them since they were on my pool deck at the time..

The only way to capture them on film is to use telephoto lens or wait until night when they can't move..

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

Awesome shots man!
They can move at night.
Just grab one and see. ;^P

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

They sure look healthy...guess they keep busy patroling the plumerias for intruders. Great free "help". I really miss seeing the critters we used to have around here years ago.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Robert, you have the most beautiful creatures hanging out at your house (with the exception of the Katydids, of course). Great pictures as always. You are a sly dog though! I did not know that you had those beautiful variegated plumies. My hat is off to you! My one variegated one has an inflo! I am really excited about it and hope I can get it to bloom for me this winter with a little help:-) I had always thought that the variegated ones would yield white flowers until I saw this picture.

Very nice Clare indeed..
Whats the flowers smell like?
I see you got her next to the wall where the heat will keep her warm at night..
Oh and i have many thai plumies variegated and very rare stuff..
All the rain has rob me this year of many many flowers so i didn't post any pics of them..
Only 10% of my plumies bloom this year mostly locals since they are hardy to begin with..

BTW
Where is Doc these days?
I thought he get a kick out this ring..

Lurking heh...
Busy as a beaver during a flood with school
Getting caught up after a 3 week bout of asthma sheesh....
I went to Cape May NJ to fish for a few days in the ocean air.
Asthma cleared up immediately
1/2 way home my chest started tightening again.
The air in Philadelphia is poison to me im convinced.
Looking to move to the coast now. x^P

Love the magnolia, stunning!!

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Ouch Mike you do need to move bud for your health sake...
Live near the coast like you said...
Sitting in a heated Jacuzzi does that help?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Robert,

I just moved that variegated one against the house for that reason. I think it is probably the warmest spot in the yard. That first picture is not mine but belongs to a Pals member named Anucha. I should have mentioned that when I posted it. Mine is the second picture and has not bloomed before but has an inflo now. I'll let you know on fragrance when it blooms.

So sorry about all the rain you are getting and have gotten. I've had a bloom of about 20%, which is still kind of low. I haven't crunched the numbers so it could be 30%, but I didn't fertilize as much as I should have this summer. I have so many inflo's coming in now. I am worried that I won't get to see them all bloom since I don't have a greenhouse this year. I did buy some plastic so I may rig up some covering to help trap heat. My Grove Farm is opening today for the first time. I'll post some pics again soon.

Our dear friend Kukiat is very busy but doing well. Thailand is receiving a record amount of rain, and I am very concerned about flooding in many areas of Thailand. I am praying that Kukiat's lands are spared. That Magnolia ring is awesome, and I love the graphics in the corners.

Michael, you need to move...yesterday, Bud!

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

I planted 100 thai seeds 8 days ago and the the new seed plugs i am testing rock..
So far the only seeds to germinate are in the new plugs versus coco (coir mix),rock wool,soil/perlite..
I don't know what is in these plugs that the hydro guys gave me to test..
They gave me 100 plugs in a large plastic bag and 10% of them just broke into pieces but there is something
in them for sure..
They also gave me 3 plastic trays with clear plastic lids which have a high ceiling so you don't have to take out the seedling until it is at least 10" high...
Seeds germinated in the shade with a average temp of 82 degrees and humidity around 60%.
The lids fog up and contain more humidity due to wet plugs..
It should be noted that the water i used to make them wet contain my special mix however the same water was used in all types of mediums as i mention so something in the plugs is reacting with my mixture for sure..
I will get more details on these wonderful plugs...
The other mediums were tested with (Messenger Seed treatment,GB Acid,Phyto Seeder,Humic Acid, and Supernatural Seed Treatment).
No other additive was used in the new plugs only my mixture in my water which came from the rain and the ph level kept at 6.2.
I also added Hydro Farm water treament to keep the rain water from spoiling which uses good bacteria to fight off any bad..
It should be noted that i had a 5 gallon bucket of old rain water that had tapoles swiming in it and the sides were green and black so i drop 15mils of HydroFarm into it and the next day the water was clear and the tapoles were still swiming so it is safe to use for sure..

Clare for every foot away from your house you lose 1 degree of temp..
I finish conducting my test on temps i mention in another post..
I will post results when i go thru all my pics and notes..
Just a short note tho...
The soil in the black plastic pots are 4-6 degrees hotter at night then the clay pots when there is a layer of rocks (lava, pea, asphalt) on top of soil..
All soils were tested and the hottest came from a mixture of coco and fir bark..
It doesn't matter if you use rocks on the clay pots the black plastic pots are the hottest at night..
The rocks slow down heat loss and water evaporation..
I know you hate rocks but in winter they can be your best friend..
The same pots tested aka (2 black plastic pots with rocks on top of soil) were place in 2 different spots on my wooden pool deck. One pot was place next to my wall of my house and the other 6 feet away..
The pot next to the house was 5-6 degrees warmer in the soil then the one away from the house..
The first 10" to 12" of your plumie is the warmest at night, after that no matter how tall she is the temp is constant which will be a cooler temp by 6-11 degrees based on the outside temp..
Like i said i have many pics with all temps display with a laser gun..
There is also a way to change (raise) the outside temp by adding one and/or two things to the test..
Good Night all!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Robert as usual..some very helpful info..thanks so much...Bob

Robert are those the plugs that look like brownies? I have some cuttings in them...... wait and see.
Maybe we can call them Magic Brownies if they work so well!? LOL

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

What if you used those smooth black river rocks (only in the winter)? They should really hold the heat.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Amazing info, Robert...wow!

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awesome, Robert! Thanks for your research and for sharing your findings! Very interesting indeed! I've been meaning to get one of those laser guns:-) They sound like fun! I did go ahead and buy a different portable greenhouse yesterday so I could see all my inflo's bloom. I didn't want to take a chance that all my inflo's would fall off in December or January when it starts to get cold here. That is good to know that the ones against the house are toasty warm. I have a thermometer there, and it always reads way above the outside air temp. That aluminum siding probably helps keep the first foot even toastier. I look forward to reading more results of your tests.

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Hetty i have a few that look like brownies lol..
I like the idea that we should called them brownies :)
Here are a few shots of the seedlings..
Not the best shots but i didn't feel like taking more shots of seeds :)
In these shots you can see that the seeds explode and rip apart the plugs :O
I have 4 trays of seeds i just planted and this tray had the new plugs the hydro guys gave me..
As you can also see the rock wool has nothing yet..
So they say pictures are worth a thousand words..

I have seen inflos turn into branches and never flower..
They start off like a normal inflo but before she can produce any flowers they change
their mind and become a branch..
In this case she did both at the same time..
Look more closely and they can get 5 toes too at the bottom of the bract :)

I spent hundreds of dollars this year just to see how fast i can make a plumie flower..
Using Brads wonderful seeds from OZ land and some from Suki i spent lots of $$$$ on top notch nutrients just to prove a point that garbage in and garbage out means alot in the plumie world..

Some of you might remember these pics but for you who do not know here are my seedlings on May 1 2006 taken with my phone cam..

I will take another pic of this seedling because it is producing flowers big time under a 1,000 watt metal halide and a 1,000 High Pressure Sodium system...
This is not the only seedling to flower i got 6 more just like her and a 7th seedling produce a false inflo but that is my fault because i was out of town and she got ignored..

Here is the seedling with the f-inflo the picture was taken on Dec 18 2006 notice the false inflo..

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awesome job there, Robert! I too got quite a few false inflo's on my seedlings last summer. I'm not sure that it can be avoided, but perhaps it can if the seedlings are fed to a great extent. You sure got some great results. I bet they are loving that 1000 watt metal halide and 1000 high pressure sodium system. Wow! Your electric bill must be really high, dude! There is no way I could afford to have that here, but I wish that I could. Congrats and keep up the good work and show us pictures this May at one year old.

I have a few more seedlings about to bloom in the greenhouse, which formed inflo's late in the summer. I've been really bad about fertilizing and will consider this a wake-up call to do better this coming growing season. I just ordered some dried chicken manure for an area where I want to eventually sink plumerias after I plant tomatoes there this summer. Of course, I would love all my plumies to flower every year, but I am a little hesitant in feedling them too much because my growing space is so limited. I would actually like to keep them dwarfed in containers for as long as possible if I can. I'm going to have to do the root pruning thing at some point in the near future.

Great job and great pics as usual! Thanks for sharing them! They are just breath-taking. That Golden Ray is particularly stunning. And, you sly dog, I didn't know you had Golden Pagoda. She's a beauty. I just noticed that she looks a bit like a Thai one called "#4437," also known as "Sheer Beauty." Have you seen that one? Here is Kukiat's picture below. Any Idea what variety name is closest to this plant. It is an inherited plant. It has been in my Grandmothers yard since the late 70's and when she died and we sold the house I took a cutting. It has been tricky to grow as it is more prone to rot over the winter and I attribute this to lack of cold hardyness. I winter them in garage without dirt and do not water over winter. It has a light scent of roses with a hint of fruitiness. I think she may have brought it back from Hawaii as I know she went there in 1975'ish.

FYI reading your diary and looking at all the posted pics has become addictive. I wasted my entire evening and even more of my only morning off looking at it all. LOL I have thoroughly enjoyed it and look foward to following the conversation. Keep up the great work with the pic's and I love the rings Idea ( are they the syrofoam rings or do you have some type of bowl or vase under there?). I also worry about those exotic lizards, I know my friends in Orlando have lots of wierd lizards in their yard and they eat all the other smaller green anole lizards. Take care and thanks!!
I have a few pictures of my flowers in my back yard on my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/srbowers66

srbowers, your pink flower is gorgeous. I'm sure it is an unnamed/unregistered hybrid seedling as most plumerias coming out of Hawaii are. Very few are named and registered varieties, and I don't recognize yours. There are thousands upon thousands of unnamed unregistered plumerias out there. It is beautiful though. The plumie rings are usually made of ceramic or china. See this link: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/662463/ Also see this link about identification: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/687547/

Reading Robert's threads are certainly time well-spent so you shouldn't feel like it has been wasted time!

Edited to add: Sharon, I went to that link that you provided but only saw one tiny picture of you in front of some plumerias. When you click on pictures, it takes you to a sign-on page. There is so much going on with that link; it is hard to navigate. Please feel free to upload your plumeria pictures on a new thread so we all can see.
