Rain Rain Go Away! Come Back When I Call You!
======================================
The everyday early morning and late night showers are playing havoc on my blooms
but i manage to get some of them on 35mm last week..
Have many more pics on the way...
Again i will use a outside link because i don't want the forum
to paste it's "Hey your stealing this pic" banner all over it..
The pics are 200kb plus so modems beware..

This "Daisy Wilcox" almost looks fake blame the auto focus!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/daisy.wilcox.jpg

You can see what the rain does on my "Hilo Beauty", poor flowers!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/hilo.beauty.jpg

One of my favs the "Pani Vine" she smells like mens cologne/musk
but my neighbors wife says it smells like the perfume "Memorable"
by avon i can not confirm this tho!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/pani.vine.jpg
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/pani.vine2.jpg
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/pani.vine3.jpg

Another shot of the "Rosy Posy" at sunset which shows off
her hues of orange! She smells like a hint of rose with
a strong breeze of slice peaches!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/rosy.posy.sunset.jpg

Another fav of mine and she is local "South Florida Gold" or
"KeyWest Yellow".It looks like the "Aztec Gold" however the local names
have been around long before the registered aztec gold.
She produces x-large leafs and a very sweet pungent smell
of peaches. This plumie responds well to strong fertilizers
and she had in one season 8 feet of new growth before the
hurricanes cut her down.Lessons i learn from her?
Too much growth and the trunk grows stretch marks and
8 feet of green growth is not strong enough against high winds
or strong enough to hold the x-large leafs and hugh inflos.
As you can see in one of the pics she already has 3-4 feet of
new growth this season. In January she was nothing but a stump!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.gold.jpg
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.gold2.jpg
The mother tree [R.I.P] from which this plumie came from is also gone.
Wilma not only took her out of the ground but threw her down the
street.Neighbors ran her over many times, too lazy to go around her.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/mother.tree2.jpg

Another local plumie we call "South Florida Pink" or "Flamigo Pink".
One of great plumies i ever seen for many reasons.
She is always the first plumie to bloom (late winter).
Sometimes she will spit out inflos before any leaves arrive.
She is a prolific bloomer non stop all thru spring, summer
and fall. She produces many seedpods almost every branch.
She never needs any care whatsoever nothing at all.
She is a dominate plumie if you plant her inches away from
another type of plumie most likely she will wrap her roots
around it and cause the next inflos to look like her.
This has happen to me twice.. I say twice because i didn't
believe it happen the first time hehe!
She smells like a soft rose mix with a splash of baby powder!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.pink1.jpg
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.pink2.jpg

This is the "Strawberry Loops" plumie which smells fruity to me.
She is a good bloomer with many small flowers on the inflo.
The color is very vibrant and pictures don't do her justice but
this picture is very very close to her looks.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/strawberry.loops.jpg

Thee tops IMHO in fragrance, the "Vera Cruz Rose".
I have several of these and one was destroyed and the other was
cut in half by hurricanes. This is another cutting i bought recently
and she rewarded me with her blooms. The smell is outstanding
and she smells just like a rose not a slight hint of rose but
the full smell of a rose and with your eyes close you could never
tell the difference between the two!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/vera.cruz.rose.jpg

The "Wave Rage" plumie with her distinct looks.
I don't know her smell, all i can say it's that typical pani smell that you
can't really place yet. She is sensitive to alot of rain and will drop all of her
flowers so i try to protect her when i can!

I am in love with the 2 shots of the pinks!!
Flamingo pink you say?
The 2 pics are different, 1 is half white the other full pink.
I have many pinks and those are 2 killers buddy!
Heres Paulas Slaughter Pink today,
She gave me 3 whites after I brought her inside,
The following blooms resumed Pink once I moved her outside again.

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

OOps I forgot the pic LOL!!
Here she is.

Glad you like it..
There are 10 trees in my neighborhood all of them came from my yard :)
I had one tree growing on top of a big coral rock with no dirt just like a orchid
and she was 9 feet tall..
The problem with her? She was a easy target for the hurricanes because she had no
strong support, she was growing on top of the ground..
My tree is 20 years old and when i move to a new house 5 years ago i cut the top of the tree off with a chainsaw and took it with me..
I spilt it up and gave the neighbors nice small trees..
So i basically stuck a 12 foot cutting in the ground 2 feet deep and very woody i might add with no sap whatsoever.I have read that there is a max size for cuttings 8 feet i think but believe me when i say hogwash..

Here is the 12 foot cutting 1 year later (2002) after i cut her off the mother tree!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.pink3.jpg

Here is the shot of her base as proof she is indeed a 12 foot branch stuck in the ground.
As you can see the old remains of several branches and notice how woody she is indicating a very old tree!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/florida.pink-bark.jpg

Here is one just for you..
This is a branch that was rip off from Hurricane Katrina last year and i stuck her in the ground and she bloom rather quickly before winter dormacy.
This is a 500kb picture sorry but i compress it really good but, i guess the closeup
of a pink flower tends to be very large. This is nice closeup of her strong built inflo
and you can see why she blooms many flowers thru-out the year!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.pink4.jpg

PS
If you want a piece of her send me a email with info and i will send her to you.
I don't need anything in return i am glad to spread a native plumie to other members.

Nice pic of the SP and btw this plumie i have does the very same thing..
I need to take shots of her white flowers mix with her natural pink some time..
One more note on her flowers the texture is very soft delicate type but for some reason
when you stick her in a bowl of water with other good plumies she will last longer then
most of them..

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Wow! Fantastic pictures and descriptions! I'm so sorry about your hurricane damage, but I am so glad that you have recovered nicely from it. That mother tree was amazing. We were theorizing over at Pals that Aztec Gold and Key West Yellow are the same flower genetically -- perhaps someone registered the local name as Aztec Gold or perhaps AG is a seedling of KWY. It would be hard to know for sure. There is also a theory that there are two Aztec Gold's being circulated under that same name -- one that grows in a prostrate manner with droopy branches and one that grows erect. Again, one could be a seedling, and there is no way to know without DNA testing, I guess.

Your pictures are all wonderful. Thanks for sharing them. I see somebody has been shopping at Tropic Nature! LOL! So have I. I too have the Strawberry Loops and Wave Rage and can't wait for them to bloom. I also have a Fiesta Rainbow and Pink Widow from Suki that I would love to see bloom one of these days. I got my grafted Vera Cruz Rose from Florida Colors recently. A friend had given me a cutting of that one to root, and it took about a year to root or rather rot. That was before I knew about heating mats and bottom heat.

That is amazing about your 12-foot rooted tree! Awesome!

By the way, you can choose not to have that copyright mark placed on your pictures. Just go to the blue tab above that says "My Info," then to to "Manage Your Preferences," then go to "Copyrights," and then select "No Method."

lopaka..just great pics..would love and come see them in person some time....just wonderful...thank you..Bob

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thank you Clare for the info i was more concern about the server load being that these are big pics and if i need to post these on another forum i can hotlink off my servers and not this forum..
I don't see any FAQ on what the max size and dimensions are for uploading images..
===============================
As for the Aztec Gold i have that plant too and the only difference i see is the size of the flower.. The Florida Gold has a bigger flower and stronger smell but this could be that the Gold is a older tree. The gold does grows wide and sometimes droopy but you have to train her with regular pruneing like i did with the mother tree..
The gold likes to put out branches under the prune cuts and this is why she may droop..
You just have to have the courage to cut off the new growth and keep her reaching for the sky..
The yellow that sue70 is selling is from a very old tree..
I have seen this tree and she is 40 feet tall and very old..
The flowers on my tree range from 4 to 6.5 inches which is why she is so pungent.
The bigger the flower the more potent and sweeter they become..
You can not walk by this tree without burying your face in her blooms..
Many peeps sell plumies on ebay and they all say their plumies smell good..
They are correct they do smell good but most of them can't hold a candle to
the Florida Gold or Vera Cruz Rose. These two plumies are so intoxicating
that all of you should add them to your collection if you haven't done so already.

Here's another fact on her!
I don't know if it was this forum or another one but, i posted the story about the hurricane destroying my Gold and i had 30+ large cuttings that i gave away to my neighbors and the rest of them i threw in my carport.Hurricane Wilma eye came right over my house in Oct 2005 before that was Katrina's eye which wasnt too bad compare to wilma..
Anyways 2 weeks ago i was cleaning out the carport and to my surprise i found 3 cuttings buried under what was my wooden fence.
All 3 cuttings had 5-6 new leaves and one of them even had a small inflo with 2 flowers on it..
The cuttings were shrivel as you may know from being out so long but to survive and grow it was a nice surprise.

Thank you Bob glad you like them..
I have many many more types of plumies i have yet to photograph.
I can not even walk in my backyard anymore now that they are all growing like weeds..

Hi Lopaka! I'm not sure what the max picture size is, but I've never had trouble loading a picture here at Dave's. I would bet that, if you tried to load a really large size pic, the system would tell you that it was too large when you go to preview it. It might even just automatically resize the largest ones. Anyway, links are fine too so whatever is easiest for you. Links are nice because you can post all your pictures in one post whereas, when you upload to Dave's, you can only upload one picture per post.

Thanks for all the info. on Aztec Gold and Florida Gold. That is good to know! A 40-foot tall tree sounds amazing. I'm glad that some of your Gold cuttings survived in your carport. These are amazing trees, aren't they? I can't wait to see all photos that you have yet to take. I hope hurricane season goes smoothly for you and all other Floridians this year.

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thank you Clare..
I don't think i can handle losing 30% of my plumie collection again..
I gave up on collecting exotic and fragrant orchids because wilma took
and left no trace of 42 orchids i had..
You can't replace orchids that are 10-15 years old..

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Ok i was ask to repost some pics i uploaded on another forum..

This is the "Scott Pratt" and the "Rosy Posy".
The scott i bought off Suki and the Rosy i bought of Brad.
The scott has a spicy smell to it but i didn't buy it for the smell i think the
picture tells it all.The rosy has a light rose/peaches smell to it and she has
good texture on the flower. The scott wants to grow wide and the rosy wants to
reach for the sky.The rosy is a fast grower and she has oval-oblong leaves while
the scott has linear-oblong leaves. The rosy is a hybrid from the land of OZ so if you
want one you will need to see Brad.Once again my pics will be mostly wallpaper size!

Yikes don't like the resize of my pic so here is the 1024 version which IMHO is much better.

Here is another shot of the "Rosy Posy".
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/just_rosy2.jpg
The rosy seems to glow in the dark and i tried to capture
that effect in this shot..
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/glow.dark2.jpg

Here is a family shot..
Looking from left to right is the "Scott Pratt" on bottom is the
"Rosy Posy" all the way to the right is orphan who lost her name
after hurricane wilma.I believe she might be a piece of the "Wave Rage".
The top is native plumie i found growing wild by a lake near my house.
She has very light light pani smell to be honest my grass has more smell
then her.I grab her because of her colors as you can see and she is a prolific
bloomer and she likes to spit out seed pods. This plumie i found growing on
top of a rock with very little soil visible so i just grab the rock too and brought her home.

(Zone 11)

Hi lopaka, great pictures and info! I was wondering if the Key West Yellow came from ebayer Sue70? I recieved a couple cuttings from her that she calls Key Largo Yellow.
They have yet to bloom for me but they are supposed to have a great fragrance and large flowers. I also have a Aztec Gold from ebayer 1000 Blooms that has also not flowered yet.
It will be interesting to compare the two...

This message was edited Jul 6, 2006 7:14 PM

1000blooms would be me.... LOL

(Zone 11)

Dutchlady1,
I would like to thank you for sending a very healthy plant as well as a nice mystery cutting.
Both are doing well, and I hope the Aztec Gold will bloom for me this year...

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Awesome pictures, Robert! Your backyard is fantastic!

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Dave my Gold is just that, mines!
I have 2 trees as you see from my pictures..
I have many trees in my yard not cuttings..
Plumies trees have always been in our homes over the years..
My dad planted 4 plumies in our old yard in the late 50's so by the time i was born
i had trees to play in :)

Sue70 gets her from a private resident who has a 35+ foot tree..
It is a old tree and i have a hugh cutting from it also thanks to the storms..
The flower as she claims is very big and the smell is awesome..
Sue calls it keywest yellow because she really doesn't know what it is..
The plumie is register as the Aztec Gold in some parts of the country..
This plumie was always called South Florida Gold and the folks in the keys
call it Keywest Yellow. The oldest and largest plumeria trees in the USA are in
South Florida. From my own eyes and from what my dad as told me Coral Gables,
Fort Lauderdale, and KeyWest have the biggest trees..
Keywest was just about destroyed by a Category 5 Hurricane in 1935 then they had
many hits from other ones like Betsy,Donna,Andrew, and Wilma.
I'm guessing that many plumie trees met their fate by one of those storms..
I use to know where 4 hugh plumie trees were but since Andrew they are no longer
there..

Sorry for the history lesson :)
The Florida native plumies that i have or had in my yard are the gold and pink you see here..
I also have the rainbow, miami red, bayshore white, hollywood yellow and a grainy purple/lavender that smells sweet. There are 3 others that are on the next street which i do not have in my yard..
===================================================
If Dutchlady sold you a AG you can bet you got a winner and it should be just like the one
Sue70 sold you..
The story says it all look at sue's cutting..
They are hugh almost like small trees so you can bet they are coming from a HUGH
mother and she is very old..
The leaves are the biggest i ever seen on any plumie and last year one of my cutting from
my tree spit out a seedpod before she even had a single leaf!
I have a picture of it because i thought that was so neat..
====================================================
On a different note..
The 12 foot cutting shown here of my pink tree..
Today she spit out 3 tiny seedpods talk about a furtile tree..
It would seem the older the tree the more furtile they become..
=====================================================
Clare that's the side of my house the backyard is much more dense with all kinds of plants..
I do not kid when i say i can no longer walk thru it because the plumies are throwing out leaves everywhere so i will be busy this week moving things around..
======================================================
Right now i am having a battle with reptiles of all types..
There is a exotic reptile warehouse not too far from me and many reptiles have escape from there..
Today i saw 5 15" shiny blue reptiles with green tails..
Darn things look like a over size skink or a monitor..
I saw some of my seedlings with big bite marks in them and my Pikake's are getting
torn up along with my jasmines, ylang ylang tree, michelia champaca, and the michelia alba.Tonight i was inspecting my night blooming jasmine trees when i saw 6 to 8 small green iguanas sleeping in there.I was so mad i put on some gloves and sprayed them with Ortho insect killer and it knock them out and i grab everyone of them and threw them in a 5 gallon bucket..
So any suggestions on what to do with them?
Here are my 3 choices:

A) Use double sided tape and ahere them to my driveway and watch the BlueJays or Mocking Birds or even better the big white ibis peck at them.

B) Drive down the street and release them in a neighbors yard who has 8 big Hibicus trees in his yard.No one likes him anyways ;=/

C) Take them to a field and release them..

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Robert--put them in the freezer and do us all a favor. Iguanas are officially an exotic, invasive nuisance in Florida now and I have been reading reports that talks are going on about how to possibly exterminate them since they are harming the flower and fruit industries, not to mention the havoc they wreak on gardeners.

Brad

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Oh, my, gosh. If you are going to kill them, please do it in a humane way:-(

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Welcome to another edition of "Diary of a Mad Plumerian"

To all who are concern with the reptiles from "He..double toothpicks".
Problem was taking care of by the process of the food chain...
I kept the 6 baby Iguanas in a 5 gallon bucket until i could find a way
to dispose of them but to my surprise mother nature took care of the problem.
I kept the bucket on my wooden deck and i guess it was in plain site of most
birds plus bright green Iguanas against a bright orange bucket must have help
too.
Anyways as i was walking in the backyard i notice this hugh bird flying out of
the bucket. The bird was a Red Shouldered Hawk so i ran inside and got my
new digital camera which i have not fiquired out yet and took these pics..
Excuse the quality but you can not get too close to a Red Hawk because their
vision is very good and they will fly off long before you get within range of
your digital camera.I was lucky enough to catch him swallowing the last reptile.
I bet it felt like Thanksgiving for him..

..more plumie pics being uploaded shortly!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Too bad for the iguana's but ya can't blame the hawk for not passing up a free buffet.

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

**NOTE**
All these pics were shot with a digital camera at super high quality settings.
I have compress them and resize them as much as possible but the camera allows
for full manual control plus macros. The pictures what i beleieve have capture
full vivid true colors of the flowers at the time i took the shot. The color of the
flowers changes thruout the day and according to the wheather plus sky reflection
has alot to do with it.With that said true color pictures will always be hugh in
size unless you degrade the shot with alot of compression. Most of the pics are
1024 x 768 and 250kb or greater so if you have a slow connection please be
patient.Don't know if anyone wants to use my pics but i made these for a friend
who wants them as a desktop wallpaper. You are all free to use them anyway you like
as long as you give credit.I hope you all enjoy them as much as i do.
Thanks to all of you for inspiring me to go out and finally buy a digital camera.
============================================================

Ok i got my new Cannon 7.1 camera and the rain is still falling for days now..
The flowers are falling off the inflos quicker then i can take a picure of them..
On my first post i showed you the "Florida Pink" now a few days later and with
my new cam have a look at what the rain has done..
Here is the link from my first post:
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/south.florida.pink1.jpg
Now here is the pic from today with new camera (i told you she was furtile):
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0004.jpg

I have some new pics but, before i post them in a few minutes here are some more
pics from the links above only this time in digital eye candy format.
These pictures are true to color at the time i took them. The conditions that
these plumies grow in is a Heat index of 100+,a UV index of 10+,a daytime temp of
90+ degrees everyday, and the relative humidity of 80+ degrees. It has been raining
everyday for the last week. That might be too much info lol but for some of the
plumie guru's on here i thought you might want to know the conditions and how they
effect the color of the flowers. The hilo beauty and scott pratt were much darker
in color but have change to what you see here.

Here is the "King Kalakaua"
I guess she is also known as the Miniature White. The flowers are about
1.5 to 2.0 inches. The flowers have a very good keeping quality they seem
to stay on the inflo for quite awhile. The flower has a spiral effect when
blooming and some say she has a very strong gardenia smell. The smell to me
is a mild gardenia at best but that could be she is still young as a plant.
Some plumies don't reach their full fragrance until they got a few years under
them and considering they been fed well.I notice a visitor in the picture but
did not see him while i was taking the shot. Can you spot him?
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0011.jpg

Here is the "Ryann Chelsey"
I am really liking this plumie she is very showie and what wonderful blooms she
produces. The petals are wide and overlapping and she has a very nice sweet
fragrance of peach mix with other sweet smells. In the pic you can see she also
changes colors from pink to a final white. The flowers are about 3 inches across.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0010.jpg

Here is the "Miami Crimson"
This is another native red which really has no name.I gave it this name because on
the pantone color scale Crimson is the closest color she comes to.
She also fades to a dark pink mix with crimson and the center is solid crimson
with no hint of any yellow or orange band. This is not the "Keywest Red" or the
"Miami Red" they are much darker in red and the Keywest Red has a yellow band in
the middle. This cutting came off a 20 year old tree. The tree is semi tall but
grows wide also. The flowers are about 2.5 to 3.0 inches. The scent is that of a
dieing Rose smell. When some roses are about to die or almost dead they have a
tainted rose smell and this is what i think she smells like. The smell is not
strong until you put your nose in her.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0012.jpg
Here is a shot of her good looking backside and on some flowers she has a dark
pink color next to those red bands. This flower is 4 days old on the inflo when i
pick it.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060707_0042.jpg

Here is the another unknown her dog tags were lost from the storm.
She was found stuck in my wooden fence and now she has rewarded me with
her beauty.I am open for idea's on this one.I have 2 possible locations
where she came from.I have some thai friends who i traded some plants with
and she could be from there or she came from my uncles ranch in Maui.
The flower is very special she has a silvery side to her flower which makes
it hard for my camera to capture at certain angles.I took 40 pictures of her to
capture her true color and this pic seems to nail it right on the head. The
flower is 4 inches across and her smell is slightly bitter with a hint of fruit.
Something weird about her too is that she only wants to produce 1 flower at a
time. When this flower dies off another one opens up to take her place.I have yet
to see two or more flowers open at the same time.
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0002.jpg
Oh one more thing she has a guardian who's been there for 5 days straight and when
i get close it hides under the leaves.Very slick critter i must say..
Any bug freaks out there who can id this guy?
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0009.jpg

Here is another OZ beauty the "Quandamooka"
She is another semi fast grower and her smell is sweet with a hint of peaches.
Her flowers are 4.0 to 4.5 inches across and she is a proflic bloomer.
She has inflos on every branch and she looks fake from afar. The color is
outstanding and seems to glow in the dark among the other plumies. The picture
was taken in the late afternoon early evening to capture her true color.
Ok this one is for Brad so someone tell him please..
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0042.jpg
The flowers open up fairly quickly too..
Here is the same plumie and this shot was taken at 11:00am of the same day.
Look at the top right flower bud which is not open yet and then look at the other
pic of her shot in the early evening/late afternoon.

I leave you with a shot of one of my Bat plants!
http://www.whitesandsmedia.com/lopaka/20060706_0001.jpg

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

The Bat plant's are way cool. I ordered one one time from Park's. Not knowing what it was supposed to look like as far as foilage, I watched it grow into a nice seedum. I had completely forgot about those until this pic. I'll have to try and find one again.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Very nice plumie pics. Thanks for sharing them.

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

Awesome Quandamooka, Robert! Thanks for sharing! It is nice to see people post the Oz pics, for a change!

Plumiedelphia, PA(Zone 7a)

I cant wait for my Quandamooka to bloom WOO-HOO!!
The iguanas sell for $30.- each up here and sell fast too!
BTW, the tails are delicious I hear. ;^)
Im curious if the super fertile pink is the same one you offered cuttings of?
It would be a perfect seed parent for some of my hybridizations. 8O)

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes Mal it is the same one..
She is one tough plumie..
I rooted a 12' branch that should tell you something..
Just say the word i can cut off a stick for ya..
I have 2 other natives trees i have yet to post pics of..
One has a sweet strawberry smell to it and the mother is a 35' foot tree
so she is old one for sure..
The lizards living in my plumie garden are a concern..
The cuban iguana's are the biggest threat..

Today i manage to capture those elusive blue tail reptiles..
I was told they are eastern green lizards aka Lacerta viridis (Ameiva).
They told me they eat insects and other small reptiles so they are ok..
Today they were very active running around all over the place..
I know this the plumie section but what the heck here they are..

I truley envy you the ameivas
I had many as a younger man as pets
They are terrific!
They get over 20 inches long and will hurt you if they bite when you grab.
Ive seen them tear flesh quite easily.
I fed mine mice lol!
They eat all rodents, quite vicious on the prowl
Thank God they stay small!!
They match us for tenacity and courage when cornered.
They dig, climb, swim, run all as fast as can be.
I absolutely love them!
I collected many monitors too.
No more... they smell up the house when they go poo-poo
I had a 5 foot green iggy that had neat orange stripes, I fed her lots of orange things lol
Oranges, carrots, goldfish etc....
Man I envy you having them Ameivas.
If they bite a plant its because they missed the critter that was on it lol!!
They dont miss often either.
A good size blue will bring upwards of $70.- here, $40.- for a green
I cant say it enough, I LOVE THEM!!! 8^O

Oh I sentch a D-Mail man.. ;^)
The word is word yes yes yes yes
Id be tickled if a big ole blue amieva found his way here too lol!!
Probably a bad idea for customs lol!!
Wed get a cell together. 8^Z
Awesome pics man!!!
The best ive seen of Ameivas.
Thanks!

Ok i took out a ladder and shot these pics today in between all the rain..
These 2 trees are over 14' feet high so i don't see the flowers until they fall off..
They are both local plumies that will see growing in and out of Broward county..

This one is called "Miami Magenta" she smells like strawberries with a hint of musk.
The yellow center appears only on the early stages of the flower then she disappears
into a solid magenta.

These shots are for jungle bob who caught my curiosity when he posted his Pink Wilma.
I did not look at this tree in awhile and thought his pics were from another tree in my neighborhood so i had to get the ole ladder out to check the colors again on my tree..

This tree we call "Lauderdale Lilac" she has a sweet smell fruitty like rasberry/strawberry.
She is from a very old tree that is over 40+ feet and over 60+ years old .
The mother tree is bigger then most oak trees and her trunk is so wide it looks like a
oak..
The top of her is so wide she covers the owners roof completely and parts of the neighbors.
I did not check this tree after wilma but will plan a trip to see her next week and will take shots of her if she is still in one piece..
The mother is only a 20 minute drive from my house so it's a question of making time to see her..

radio beacon towers you see in the distance.

Both are lovely, lovely flowers. I hope that "Lauderdale Lilac" is still there. I think you are right that your pictures of "Lauderdale Lilac" look a lot like Bob's pictures of his. It's hard to say without holding them side by side, but I certainly see similarities.

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

The magenta one looks somewhat like FCN's 'Salsa'(especially the first pic with that contrasting golden-orange center)---- and the second one looks like FCN's 'Miami Rose'. Could this be another example of locals being renamed?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lopaka...wow that does look like mine...i'll share your pics with some friends...thanks so much..i SO appreciate your imputs and those of all the friends here....I think i need to take a trip down your way...if i just head for Davie...will i see all these things...lol

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks all..
Brad you could be right but i can't tell from any of FCN pictures what's what..
Alot of these trees have several names and because alot of these varieties
grow at or near me i should one day catalogue as many i can find for my own
personal logs..
I know where alot of these trees are because i have several lawn guys on my street and i ask them
to look out for the trees when they are out cutting yards..
Just got off work so im tired so i will make this short..

BTW
The magenta is called that because thats the color on the pantone scale she resembles same with the lilac..
She grows in miami and broward county..
This plumie can be seen all over cooper city and davie, they are mostly trees ranging from 15' to 30' in height..
The lilac or what i think some people call miami rose is called lauderdale lilac because the mother is in ft.lauderdale
and she is over 60+ years old and has to be one of the biggest plumie tree i have seen.I do not kid when i say the trunk
is hugh and from what i hear from the lawn guys there is another big momma near her so i am going to make a short trip
to see if they survive wilma..
On a sad note tho the eye of wilma came right over my house and if you drew a NE line from my house to the beach it disects
both of those trees..
I will let you all know and of course will provide pictures and a address for all of you to see them incase you are down here.

Last time i was down that way was in February. I might be in Davie one day, Robert, and maybe you'll have time to visit and show me your garden!. We would definitiely have lots to talk about in the plant department as you like a lot of the same ones I do.

Brad

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

No problem brad and bob but for now i need some time..
I am in the middle of trenching my backyard because wilma knock over one of my coconut trees and in the process tore up the drain field and septic tank..
So now i have this 25 long 8 foot trench in my backyard that has raw sewage flowing in it..
It is not a pretty site next to the plumies and the smell is overwelming so on top of that i got fema officals visiting me often because i am in legal battle with my insurance company because they went chapter 11 on alot of us without paying us..
To top it off we just went thru 2 tropical waves as you know brad so only a few of my plumies are blooming..
Every single plumie has black spots on the leaves...
Southern AG was kind of enough to send me one of the top rated fungicides tested by chase research but it wasn't cheap and i hope the $60 dollars i paid for a small bottle will work..
Bayleton is no longer carried by Home Depot and is getting very hard to find in a retail
store if not impossible..
So now after long talks with a buddy in Southern AG i have access to the pro stuff but i am sure Brad you could get it with no problems..
My buddy told me the owner of exotic plumies buys his stuff there and resells it on their website..
For all you plumie lovers who don't know who chase is here a snip from their website:
================================
Contract research and consulting projects are being conducted on a year-round basis for a wide variety of companies producing materials (pesticides, fertilizers, potting media, media amendments, and seeds) for the ornamentals industry. Areas covered include management of diseases on all types of ornamentals including bedding plants, potted flowers, cut foliage, cut flowers, foliage plants, ground covers, herbs and perennials.

They make a wonderful color chart that show all the fungicides that they tested in the field.
I guess you can say they are the consumer reports for the chemical field..
Here is a link to the chart:
http://www.chaseresearchgardens.com/posters.html
The fungicide i got today is called Eagle so i will let everyone know if it is good..
Here is the link to SouthernAG which has thee best fungicides on the planet among other products..
Anyone can order and they ship fast lol i sound like a sales person..

I get those black spots every summer and finally learned to live with them as Baylton doesn;t stop it. No one seems to know what causes it and many say it is the sun and raindrops. My 'Hurricane' plumie gets it pretty bad--a few others too. I just sprayed the other day for rust as it finally reared its ugly head. it seems to appear quickly. I hate the stuff. Yuk! The Bayelon stinks to high heaven too and the smell lasts out in the garden for a couple fo days. At least the rains stopped long enough to spray. The come back Monday according to the weather reports. My leaves always get ugly during this time of year, on several of my plumies. Oh well.....such is life. If it is';t rust it's the black spots-- if it isn't that its that weird whatever it is that causes the young leaves to get wrinkly and little holes in them. It goes away on its own later in the year usually, but it is also ugly.

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Sup brad,
Well it's not normal for me i don't get them like i have them now :(
It comes from rain at night and mold is causing the leaves to do this..
I also think this is hindering my flowering production because some of my plumies that
should have flowers on them don't..
My Bayleton doesn't smell so i don't know which one you have..
I use the one for turf and grass that way the spill off doesn't kill the grass underneath the plumies..

Hey here is a shot for you buddy..
This first picture i took with my phone cam lol so thats why it looks crappy but it was shot in Mar 5 2006.
These are 30 OZ seedlings which i bought the seeds off you it was that 50 variety pack
back in 2005.
These next 2 shots i took with my new digital cam on the 8th of this month.
I put a spray bottle next to them you so you can see the size difference..
The 2 in front are not sick they have leaves that are much lighter then the rest as this was variety pack.
Here is the pack brad im sure you remember :)

Ok here is the July 8 2006 shots and they already need transplanting again.
This food im using and the combine rains are makeing them explode..

Hey Mal i am going to shoot for monday to get your cutting out..
In the meantime i thought you would like these shots..
My yard has been busy so i took some more shots and thought i share them with you all.

Momma is running around today..
All i can say is, these lizards are real fast and could easily out run you and i if they want..
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/497/dino15sh.jpg
http://img432.imageshack.us/img432/1766/dino28fl.jpg

Speaking of fast this guy in my front yard is pretty fast too..
I could watch this guy all day he/she is a skilled hunter..
I tried to catch him jumping up out of the grass like 2 feet to catch moths flying around..
He or she lies in the grass sometimes and waits for a flying insect to come around and then it leaps up and snags it..
This lizard likes to sit on high ground to over-look his killing zone..
I find it strange that he or she tilts their head back before it strikes out..
I call these next shots!!

Not sure to post these or not but i thought it was kool to see..
This big horse fly kept flying around trying to bite me today while
i was trimming the dead sticks off my plants..
Then after 15 mins i notice the fly was gone and this caught my eye under the leaves i was pruning..

I label these pics "Help Me" like in the old movie "The Fly".

Hey Lopaka
Those are great shots of the lizard!
I noticed you saved teh photos names as 'Jesus'
The common name is 'The Jesus Lizard'
They aquired this name as they can actually run quite a long distance over water
Ive seen them do this, I kept these as pets also.
There is a large green variety of them, totaly cool.
These are one of the nastier dispositioned lizards.
While they run from you, if cornered or caught they bite quite viciously.
I believe 18 inches to be the mature size.
What a really cool friend of the garden they are
Thanks for sharing those Pics, way cool! I saved em all ;^)

The Horse fly demise pic is really kool too.
I love it!! LOL!! serves him right and serves him up LOL!!

Robert,

The only lizards we have here are the little anoles, and I love watching them do "push-ups" on the deck. They are a little "agressive"--at least the newer brownish ones--not the green native ones that can change to brown. I actually have bother species. Anyway, the aggressive ones are a real trip. I watched one hurl himself across my greenhouse one day to catch a bug in mid-air and then land skillfully to enjoy his meal. Another time, I had one attack my toe and bite me--it does't hurt at all--because I stepped beiween him and his potential mate. The funniest. though, is when I was bending down to snatch a dragonfly off a small plumeria for a closer look. I was holding it by the wings gently and admiring his blue tail, when one of these lizards leaped from a nearby plumie and snatched it from my fingers! I was in disbelief! I laughed so hard I was hurting. I tried halfheartedly to grab him as he sat on the ground where he landed-- most skillfully, looking at me defiantly with the insect hanging from his mouth, but he was still too quick. These little guys are absolutely a blast and I wouldn't trade them for anything. The eat bugs and provide lots of entertainment!
