First bloom on the Tiger Lillys..
What's Growing, Part 2
pixie, The DL you mentioned above looking like a star gazer lilly, 'Does' look a lot like a stargazer lilly.
I was hoping to take some pics this weekend, but the angels are very busy with their bowling tournament!! Kept me up most of the night! The rain, which is welcomed, is still coming down, so pics will have to wait.
Anita
Stella D'Oro wouldn't be common if it wasn't great!
I was hoping to take pictures today but the poring rain last night knocked everything down, I have 8 bonica roses along the road and they had been putting on quite a show. Now the are kind of floppy. Nice thing about these shrub roses is they bounce back and keep blooming. (Iris, they are kind of the Stella D'Oro of the rose world)
IRIS,
Is it Knutia in that pic?
Ness;-)
Iris, I would love some sundrops. Thank you. Let me get you postage. My guess is it would be best to wait til fall.
Dave
Sarahskeeper,
I planted Malva 'Zebrina' 2 years ago, but I think I may have lost it this past winter.
I love the daylily, mine are slowly coming to life, one by one. I actually perfer to take my pictures on overcast days, the colors are much more vibrant.
Iris, I love morning glories, wild or otherwise. I have 4 dogs, we built them a fenced in area off our back deck, and I "decorate" the fence every year with different color combos of morning glories. I love the rose campion and the other flower looks like scabosia maybe?
This is "Pink Pixie" at least thats what the tag says. It is a gift for my 46 B.day and of course I would love it with a name like that!!
SK, The Stella D Ora's sure do spread don't they?? I love how it looks at the bottom of your mailbox! I seperated one clump last year because it wasn't blooming, There a ton of off-shoots in that clump, This year I got about 15-20 new clumps from it loaded with buds!!!
Dave47, Would love to see the roses when it's a good time for taking a pic of them. I'll be happy to send you some sundrops, I move things here all summer long, And have never really lost anything by doing that, So if you want the sundrops now, Thats fine If you want to wait till fall, Thats fine too, I'll leave it up to you, If you want any now, I have a few that have buds but haven't bloomed yet, Just let me know. D-mail me your addy when your ready.
pixie, With Some plants, Especially DL's, It's like you just can't capture the true beauty on a picture, I think what you did get is really nice though!
SK, I just love the Malva 'Zebrina's!! I think they ar soo colorfull and pretty!!
SK, Was that last one a smaller sized DL or large sized?
Sarahskeeper, do your hen and chicks bloom for you? My mother had the most awesome display and hers always bloomed!
nessiegirl, Yes it is Knutia , Thankyou for thinking of the name!!
pixie, I agree, The best time to take pics ( Especially of DL's) are overcast days or early mornings. I love morning glories too, And Moonflowers! Your Pink Pixie bloom is soo pretty!! What a nice Gift! The un-named flower does look like scabiosa, But it is Knutia.
SK, Love the shoes!!!
Here's a pic of one of todays water lily blooms.
Iris Yes the last DL pic (the wet one) is a smaller than usual flower. Near the bottom of my favorites list but it is earlier than most so I keep it.
The Zebrina are very photogenic. If you have a macro lens, give it a try.
Pixie, I have had those Hens & Chicks for 50 years, my first perennials. They have never bloomed, BUT I think two of them are going to this year. They are stretching their neck in preparation. I wonder what the color will be. All this rain has made them very big and now a bonus of flowers, I hope.

Iris,
Love that water lily! Knutia...never heard of it, but it does look like something I have in my garden. It had a different name tag though and it was more a marroon color. I bought it a few summers ago, however it didn't seem to come back this year.
bigcityal,
I just planted one this spring, if mine looks anything like yours I'll be very happy with my purchase!
SK, I unfortunately don't have a macro lens, but, My cam seems to get in pretty close sometimes, Sure looks like the last pic you took was up close and personal, Very Nice!!!
Pixie, I wonder what plant you had that looked like Knutia., I know that the pin cushion (sp) flower looks a lot like it. ..Maine gets pretty cold, Do you end up losing a lot of your plants through the seasons?
bigcityal, That Burgundy color on that gailllardia really stands out! Nice pic of it too!
Iris,
I've been fairly lucky with most of my perennials, some only last a few years, others ive had 7-20 years. Mock orange, lilacs, lupines, hollyhocks, asiatic and oriental lilies, moonkshood, vinca, spiderwort, astibile, jacobs ladder, forget-me-nots, lily of the valley, pincushion, yarrow, scabosia, blue sea holly(strange plant), avens geum, clematis, bellflowers, primrose, iris, tulips, aster, liatris, coneflower, and mallow. I have good luck with all of these and dayliles of course! I collect lilies in general....asiatic, oriental, and daylilies.
Pixie, I'm happy for you that most of your perenials make it, It's seems it would be kind of tough for them in a climate thats so cold in winter, But, Sounds like they do good! I pretty much have most of the plants that you do, minus the , aven geum, And bellflower, What kind of asters do you have? Have you had any problems with the lily beetle where you are???
Iris,
Your zone is not much different than mine, actually just about the same. My cousin lives in Manchester, Conn. and I spent many school vactions there so I am familar with the climate. The only difference that I could tell is you don't get the artic wind coming out of Canada as often as we seem to. Thats the crap that gives a wind chill factor of -20 to -50 below sometimes and makes me want to go to Florida for the winter!
Lily Beetles...last year I was "new" to them and they pretty much won the battle. I had lilies w/no leaves and very few flowers, and nothing seemed to work! This past winter I read up on them and was a bit more prepared. I started watching for them as soon as my lilies popped through the ground. I faithfully go out EVERY morning and check everyone of my lily plants for beetles or the larve and have hand-picked them off. Have not had to use chemicals yet this year and I seem to be winning, but I find the larve gross!!! I have purple lilies, white, red, yellow, orange, gold, light pink, dark pink, med. pink, rust, spotted, bi-tones and one that is a tri-colored with a 10 inch bloom.
Do you have problem with the Lily Beetle too? How about the rose bugs? They seem to not be satisfied with the roses this year....they are on my iris's too!!
I only have one aster right now, it is a dark pink one sitting in front of the "pixie lamp post", I moved my purple one last year and I don't think it made it through the winter. Shouldn't of moved it!!
Do you have "Monkshood"? I just aquired it last summer and I love it, very different shaped flower and I love the deep blueish purple and white color.
I just bought 2 new coneflowers: "Harvest Moon" and "Sunset" along with a "Verbascum Carribean Crush" and a "Mallow Marina" I hope they do well here.
By any chance do you collect Iris's? Or is that your real name or just or DG name? Besides lilies, I collect pixie's, fairies, what ever you want to call them.
OK. I'm off to check for lily beetles, be back a bit later.
Have a great day! Celeste
thanks Al! Its a beautiful day here in Maine....I lucked out!!
Love Malva Zebrina. I love the way they come up last after every other plant, then grow so fast you can't believe it. These little tiny seedlings all over. Then they bloom till frost.
I just found my Malva Zebrina..yea! it didn't die after all!!!! Sarahskeeper, you were right it just re-seeded it's self!
Great iris, Pixie!
