Plant it in your shoe.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I saw a pic of this last Fall and have been itching to try it.
Hens & Chicks in an old pair of sneakers.
I removed the padded insole and tung, punched a few holes in the bottom and sides then filled them up.
They should fill in by mid-Summer, I hope, LOL.
What other plants could be done like this, any ideas?

Try various sedum.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I did this last year, and they overwintered great. Had many compliments on them. My neighbor used a worn out pair of husbands farm work shoes, and they look great.

I've had these for years ... I need to put a few more hens in them ...

And those were Who's????
;)

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

To tell you the truth, I bought them a thrift shop ... excellent places for finding stuff like that. $1 a pair. I used them for mowing and gardening for a while, then changed them into planters. I think they're so earthy looking ..... :-)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, they are. When I return in a week or so I'll plant some sneakers and post picture too. I too purchased mine in thrift store just to plant.
There's a pair of LARGE mens red and black sneakers just laying in the alley next door. I'm afraid to get those and plant them for fear it might upset someone. They appeared right after I first saw Andy's shoes.

Think I'd mentioned on another thread, some time back .. that I'd planned to do the same thing: jes haint got around to doin' it, yet ..

Andy P .. your 'planted' worn-out walking shoes, are absolutely adorable.

I wonder if that's how 'planter warts' came about -?- (heehee)

Do you think pansies or violas would work?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I've seen some planted with thyme, a small sign stuck in it that said, "Don't run out of thyme."

Elizabethton (Stoney, TN(Zone 6b)

Beaker, I think violas would be nice. Pansies might get too leggy.

Don't run out of thyme ... good one!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, I finally planted the ones I had been saving.
This one has a red impatient.
And yes, they are high heeled sneakers!

Where did you find those high-heeled sneaks? I love those (for a planter, not for wearing -- ouch!).

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

At Goodwill, LOL. I knew imediately what I wanted to do with them.

Ack, look at this retro pair...Do these scream for plants, or what??

I don't know how to spell the sound I want to make, it's something like eeewwww and yuck! Thanks for sharing, gardenwife. :-)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, those are definately planters.
I don't understand mmoos response, I find them very whimsical my self as does Granny Lois, ("dave's mom") Andy and others.
Sidney

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

I think maggiemoo may be referring to their 'lack of popularity' by todays standards .. for choice foot wear - - and, not their use as a planter, Sidney ...

And if so; can't say that I blame her none either!! E-u, ugh, yuck, and as my gwandy-yunkins say: "GWOSS" .. heehee ..

Sidney, I am anxious to see the red impatient fill out in the red Hi-Sneak....
My Hens and Chicks are doing very well, I think the Monsoon helped them. LOL

I saw a pic of old Cowboy boots make into a bird house recently.

I saw that too, will be looking for some BIG yard sate boots.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. Magpye is right, I was talking about those shoes as footwear. :-)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Okey Dokey, sorry for not understanding. They are definately planters.

Here are my Sneakers one month later, resting next to the 'Gutter Gargoyle' after more rain.
Note, I added a Hen in the toe.
Little Chicks should be coming soon. Here chick, chick, chick....

Love the shoes, and the gutter gargoyle is to die for!

Those hens and chicks look awfully happy!

Finger Lakes, NY(Zone 6a)

I can't find the picture, but a friend gave me hens and chicks in a pair of children's pink ballet slippers a few years ago. They were great. They lasted 3 years, overwintering in my garage. The leather finally disintegrated and I planted the chicks in another gift from her. She was so creative with the slippers, I wanted to use her next gift with a little creativity.

Update time.
Sidney, how are those red high heels doing?
My sneakers this morning, little chicks are visible. The Hens have grown a lot, too.

I didn't realize those grew so quickly, Andy.

I saw a perfectly awful pair of high-heeled, cowhide-patterned, fake-hide clogs at the thrift shop. Howie really dislikes the whole shoe planter thing, so I didn't subject him to them. They would have been great for planters, though, plenty of room for soil. One of the clerks and I kidded around about cow-related plants that could go in them: milkweed, cowpeas, cowslip, etc.

How about cow's udder? http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/60534/index.html

I planted a friend's old workboots. He helped me build the garden. He also built the chair trellis out of apple tree branches

I saw annuals planted in old purses at a garden and antique store.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Welllll, I'll be! ..
It only makes sense, tho' ..
Afterall, we've got the hats and shoes sprouting - why not the handbags & purses!
I'm definitely gonna make plans to hit the local thrift stores next trip into town!

Thanks so much .. for the wonderful inspiration, KatieLovesDogs ...

Hey...I do have an old straw-like fiber purse that would make a kind of neat planter outside.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Do any of you guys remember the old (dressy) patent leather stiff-hinged purses?

Bet those old BIG'uns would make for some dandy and 'sturdy' decorative plant pots.

- Magpye

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Plus, purses would make great hanging baskets. I can envision several on a fence together.

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Now you have me thinking..LOL

I have several old purses..Hmmmmmmmmm

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

How about on an old door, hanging on the doorknob? Or on a front door instead of a wreath?

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Like on this? I put this door up a few weeks ago..the sign on the door says "it's sweet as clover when friends are over"
and the sign in the ground..says.."under construction...coming soon"
This is the garden area I plan to work on this weekend..I have more plants to go in there..
I have a lilac coloured purse I used for my daughter's wedding 24 years ago..can't part with it..so I think I will put it to good use..I've seldom used it since.
LOL
