Mighty Plant....Before and after.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Tomorrow morning I will spray MP all over the place. I will take some before pictures and in one month take after pics for all to see the results. I invite you to join me and do the same.

What is Mighty Plant?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I have taken several "before" pictures. In three weeks I will post the before and the after together, so we can all see results. For now, here is pic of my dwarf poinciana, red, sprayed today with Mighty Plant. I sprayed MP in everything that had not been sprayed the week before with Messenger. Edenbioscience says no need to apply both. One or the other is fine.

Plants sprayed with MP: azaleas, impatiens, all plants in my holding area, young crape myrtles, pavonia hastata, bouganvillea. And I watered my AVs (did not spray) with MP.

I was wondering about AV application.

I don't know if you're supposed to, but I did. I will report in 3 weeks.

Thanks Nery. I looked it up on google maps, it looked like about 5 inches and they didn't show the construction. :-)

ok, let me try again. This is the best I can do, everyone. Since the pictures are not the same size, I don't know if you can really evaluate the progress. short of it is, that tomato grew a lot!

Well, Voss, you have me convinced! But did you give that tomato some fertilizer too? Just wondering?

I did see a science fair project write-up in "Horticulture" magazine where they compared Messenger with "no Messenger" plants after a few weeks and the Messenger plants were definitely bigger and more robust.

What is the difference between Mighty Plant and Messenger? I couldn't find a comparison on the Eden site (although it is probably there).

Thanks for the thread, voss. Very interesting.

tabasco,

hopefully u find what u are looking for in this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/590101/#new

2- 3 weeks ago, i sprayed Messenger on iris that only got leaves on them, no sign of bud at all. i never fertilize. to my total amazement, here is the end result of Messenger spray ....

T, I had added nothing to the tomato but the messenger. However, it would be very naive to attribute all to Messenger. It is Spring, people were more selective and bought stronger varieties to begin with, soils were amended, some people did add other items (fertilizer, epson salts, alfalfa and other meals, etc etc). To really know the extent of Messenger's effect, you would have to do a double blind study.

However, being that gardening is my hobby, I am satisfied with the general statement that is has a positive effect on plants. I have now applied Messenger or MP for the 2nd time. I look forward to this discussion a month from now. By then, I should have a bunch of plants ready to eat my house, lol. My roses, good golly, they are exploding. Even my little $5 reject from walmart is doing fabulous.

Messenger - growth protein
Mighty Plant - fertilizer with a little bit of growth protein.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, not doing a study, but sprayed some tomato seedlings, which were about 2 inches tall last Friday with MP, and after the weekend, they added about an inch in growth. I am a believer. Watch out plants, you are going to get a shot of MP, whether you want it or not!!

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

My test is on 5 geraniums - 2 get messenger, 2 get spray & grow and 1 gets miracle grow.

They are all in the same size pot - were re-potted with the same exact potting soil.

They were bought at Wal-Mart on the same day - same variety and color.

They ALL look the same so far. One application each. But I will see if there is a difference by the middle and the end of summer. I believe that for this test to work, there has to be a case study with the same kind of plants. I'll post the first set of pix tomorrow.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks sterhill. I have a hard time skipping a plant with anything. You are doing us a great public service.

Oh good Sterling, I'll be watching for your results all through the summer.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

sterhill, pretty thoughtful study, look forward to your findings. I'm just happy to spray willy-nilly, lol and hope for the best. so far, so good.

defoecat, I thought the growth on my tomato was pretty amazing too. and it has grown another 2-3 inches tall and wide since I took the "after" pic.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Check out my roses that I have been treating. This was only a small sickly stick when I first started babying it. I wrote a little article about these old roses and stuck it on our website.

thrip, what do you think about alternating Messenger w/ MP every 3 wks?
that rose is absolutely incredible.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

That is exactly what I do, unless I think that things are growing too much which is rarely. Then I use only Messenger

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

So...you apply the spray followed my MP? I just finished spraying this morning..first application.
Rj

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

RJ, in three weeks I will apply the MP. just a few days ago I used messenger.

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

RJ. If you sprayed messenger yesterday, then spray Mighty Plant 3 weeks later, then messeenger again three weeks after the Mighty Plant.......etc.

Sorry if we were confusing.

I will post pix every month or every two weeks if it looks interesting. I will post here when I update my page. This is going to be interesting...

I think I'll go buy some other kind of plant to test it on also.

Sterling

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I just put Messenger on yesterday and it's raining..Will it still work??

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Looks like a cool test Sterling! Can't wait to see what happens. The only confounding problem you might encounter is the different rates of fertility in your products.

Dem: Messenger is rainfast in 30 minutes. So as long as it had at least 30 minutes on the leaves before it rained, you should be fine.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

That's good to know it was on there for hours before the rain started...Thanks for letting me know..

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Robin - please explain:
"The only confounding problem you might encounter is the different rates of fertility in your products." I am not sure what this means...

(Also - the Heaven's Gate Toad is doing wonderfully!)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay..thanks vossner..isn/t might plant the soluable --that you pour on the roots..or (do you mean sprayer hose)

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I think she means you might have a 13-13-13, and a 2-1-2 and then the MP where you'll have a confounded # in your recipe, like 27-40-32.
Thats just myMHO.
Sidney

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

thrip, I hope you will come back and clarify about fertility rates. Don't understand.

About sprayers,

this link has a pic of a 1 gallon sprayer, which is what I use to apply messenger or MP on my outside plants. In this particular link they have it priced at $27 but I bought one similar at walmart for $12. Further down on the same page there is a pic of a hand sprayer, which is what I use for my indoor plants. We bought the hand sprayer 2 years ago, also at WM for about $10. If you have a small garden, the hand sprayer would be enough for indoor/outdoor use.

http://www.planetnatural.com/site/xdpy/sgc/Garden%20Supplies/Sprayers%20&%20Applicators

By using as a root drench, I mean that I don't spray the plant from the top but rather go to the base and apply the product. let it drain out of the hole and presto. I'm done. I only do this with african violets as any kind of spray on the leaves damages the leaves. that is the only reason I do a drench. Otherwise I would spray like the rest of my plants.

Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi sugarweed -

I think you might be right. The different numbers. But for my purposes that's OK. My experiment is for me to see what is the best product to buy. If I get bigger, lusher blooms with any one of these over the other two, then that's where my money will go for my next purchase.

I find it is hard to tell - so many factors in growing plants so if you use the same product on everything how would you know? I do know that when I used Spray 'N Grow on my lilies I got really big strong stems (no staking) and a lot of lilies. That was different from any other product I had used.

This experiment will give me a better idea which product is best for my money. Everyone says their product is best. By the end of the summer I should see some difference and if I don't, then whatever is cheapest gets my dollars next time!

Garden's Alive now also has a harpin product: called Green Guard. http://www.gardensalive.com/product.asp?pn=66484

Monroe, NC(Zone 7b)

Sugar exactly described what I was talking about. If one of your products has a fertilizer ratio of 10-10-10 and another 1-2-20 (made those up), and another has no fertilizer, then you will for sure see growth differences based on just fertility.

But you are right, generally speaking, you just want to figure out what is the best product to use. Then the fertility doesn't matter because it is part of your wholistic equation. Makes sense to me. Make sure that you measure things besides just how big the plants get. Just nitrogen alone with probably cause that. The strength of your lily stems is a great example of things to look for besides just growth. You might also look at the general appearance, disease, bugs, leaf size and color, bloom or fruit, how long does it continue to bloom/.fruit (does it wimp out), and heat tolerance. How well a garden is growing is not always just "bigger is better". Being someone that uses almost all horse manure as my soil applied fertilizer, I appreciate; more compact, healthy growth instead of rank wild growth that you can get from lots of chemical fertilizers.

I love the little heaven's gate toad lily. I have had it for 2 years. I stole a chunk from my brother's garden in Atlanta (he never actually goes in the garden so there was no chance of getting busted). It has taken a while to get established and doesn't have near the vigor of its cousins, but I like it. Very different. I have only seen it for sale at one nursery and that was at the Urban Gardener in Atlanta.

BTW The Garden's Alive product is the same as Messenger. They buy it from us and change the name!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well in my book Garden's Alive has all the trappings of a hold up, but the guns and bandanas tied across their faces. Ortho sells a great 1 gallon sprayer for less than $10 and the smaller one for around $5.
Yesterday I mixed my gallon of Messenger and then started doing cuttings of coleus and impatients. Lo and behold here came a cloud, which when in a drought is great. To spray, or not to spray, well the cloud just barely wet everything, so I sprayed away.

lol sugarweed. I'm not familiar with gardens alive. I just googled for a gallon sprayer and this was the first one with a good enough pic. I did think $27 for a sprayer was kinda steep, but I was only looking for a pic.

$5 for a hand sprayer? I got ripped and you did good, lol.
