Texas Roundup - 4/29/06 HEAD COUNT!

This is very exciting. We should expect that since there are a couple months left we might end up picking up over 100 people for this roundup.

Let's decide on the park! That's really all that is left that NEEDS to get done right now so I can reserve it. Unless anyone requests otherwise, I'm going to reserve Central Park.

dave

I called the city and Central Park is taken for April 29th, but they highly recommended Southwood Park. They said it was very nice and is the largest of all the pavilions they have, and has the same cost. It handles up to 300 people, has a kitchen, bathrooms, playground, etc.

So, that's our pavilion. I'll go down this week and reserve it.

Awesome! The Quality Suites is just up the road, about 2 minutes away. They had rooms yesterday, anyway. :-) A non-smoking room with two beds and a sofa was $90. I booked through www.travelocity.com, but I'm sure pretty much any travel site will work just as well.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

That sounds like fantastic facilities! The excitement is starting to set in...
:-)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! that is just great, all the facilities and lots of space, we are going to have a wonderful time.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, the problem will be getting people to leave, lol.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

DH and I will be there, but we'll be staying with Blue Eyes. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Blue Eyes.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

(Ya'll are killin' me here! Oh woe is me! However!...I expect LOTS of pics and reports! Have a blast! Ain't many things better than a DG RoundUp!)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Your welcome, welcome, welcome silverfluter! I am so looking forward to having houseguests and to meeting everyone at the roundup. This will be so much fun!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Posie4U and I, also Sedrick and her friend, have booked at the Fairfield Marriott. One of our rooms is two queen size beds for $67.50 using AAA membership. I don't know just how far it is from the park, but hey it's College Station not Dallas; everything is nearby! LOL!!
Still looking for a place to meet for breakfast on Sat. morning about 8am. Anyone been there and can recommend one?? Or maybe we can do the Continental breakfast at the hotels and meet at Starbucks...or as my DH calls it Fourbucks!! LOL!

Edited to say the Fairfield is NOT the place I wanted to stay. I wouldn't feel good recommending it either. I changed and we are now at the Comfort Inn nearer the park and the hotel is only a year old! Here is the link to the new place. http://www.comfortsuites-collegestation.com/custom/photos.php Also, we are staying Sat. night now.

I'm planning to come barring any health type problems in the family (DH's health is not always good). So just Saturday, the two of us, assuming all goes well for us. Never been to a DG swap, much less a RU! Sounds exciting!
Updating: I'm bringing a friend (my "gardening" sister!) Sheila, who doesn't even own a computer. So 3 coming counting me. Thank you!

Shoe......Hop a bus and join us!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Sheila...(I've been telling tales lately about my bus trips to my Daughter! Could be fun!)

However, I guess I'll rely on your pictures! Am rooting you folks ever onward. You'll love it! (Besides, from what I hear, people at DG Roundups...if they see Dave, they're supposed to pinch him...it's a secret DG handshake!) :>) Like I said, I'll be waiting for pictures! *grinnin'

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I haven't lived here long, but I do know there is an IHOP close to campus. Also Country Kettle. As for quainter places, I'll ask around at the lab today and see what people recommend.

:) Kim

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

As for breakfast:

I really like blue baker for pasteries, breakfast sandwichs, and bagels. IHOP tends to be really busy. I think Luby's may have a breakfast buffet on the weekend, and I am sure that Golden Corral does. Many of the mexican resturants here also serve breakfast.

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Shoe, I am so glad to hear about that "secret handshake" for Dave! Too bad we didn't know it when we met him last summer in San Antonio (at the San Antonio Nursery Date): http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/522260/ .

Dave, not to worry. We're real scared of Trish, so we'll be sure to be careful! ;-)

Now see? If every member would pitch in a dollar or two, we could have a DG airbus, which could go pick up Shoe, Jo, etc, etc...

My stomach is getting ready for breakfast!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I will be going down to College Station this Sunday it so happens! My DH has a meeting of the minds down there that day, so I am going to tag along, and look around while he is in the meeting that evening. I will definately check out the park and the hotel locations too. We should be there in time for lunch, then goof off until his meeting at 5pm.

Crossville, TN

Shoe...if you'll go, I'll go!! Jo

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

RRunner..now they're talking IHOP and Country Kettle...yummy, eh!

As much as I'd love it, I'm sure I will be tied up with farm/g-house/sales stuff here (plus family might be gone then so I'll be solo-ing it here).

I'm really excited about this Round Up though. I think it'll be a great one! Like I said, TAKE PICS and please share! Ya'll are gonna love it!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Add two more - Sharon and Chris. Have no idea if it will be a day trip, or if we will spend a night at this point.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

hmmmmm- been offline for a couple of days, so I'm getting caught up.

I'm not sure which to comment on first...telling the ladies to kindly *not* be pinching my husband (*grin*), or wondering why Maggie would be "real scared" of little me????????

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL

It's cause maggiemoo has met you and saw the fire in your eyes. :-) (grin)

Anyway, I reserved and paid for the park yesterday! It's officially our's for April 29th. I need to be there at 8:00am to check in and the roundup can begin directly after that. We have the park until closing time at 1:00am.

dave

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

So it sounds like we have a definite meeting place then???? Which park?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Nifty, I am transplanting door prizes this weekend!
Now lets get down to the real buisness, swapping!

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Who's going to start the I Have/I Want thread for the RU? I am rooting cuttings and potting rhizomes and divisions, but I'd love to know who wants what.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Oooh! Good idea. I have some Amaryllis bulbs 1 1/2 years old started from seeds to trade!!!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Aw, Trish, just kidding. Mostly I was trying to scare the others away from doing great bodily harm to your guy. ;-)

Woohoo! We've got a park!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Ladyborg,
Dave said in a previous thread he was going this week to reserve Southwood Park.

Quoting:

Now we can really get excited!!!!!!!!.........Whoo woo!!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Just an update! The park WAS reserved- all ours :)

As for food- as a treat for everyone, Dave and I decided to have a lunch catered in. Certainly we're still going to need snacks and refreshments, so I'll be posting a call for that next week- be thinking!!

Door prizes are coming great! Don't forget to email me if you are willing to donate something!

Whoooohoooo :)

Trish

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Lord willing and the creeks don't rise .. it's Southwood Park for April 29th!!

Maggiemoo .. I am so lookin' forward to this. Will be my very 1st Round Up. And, from the sound of things .. it will be in true Texas style, no doubt. I tell ya, I'm getting 'goose-pimply' in my wrinkles!!

Dave/Trish .. will we need to be prepared to make donations? Are we 'required' to bring stuff to 'trade'? What if we don't have anything to 'trade'?

Also .. we're thinking about bringing the RV and setting-up in the general area, instead of flying in - to better enable our visiting some other family and folk, on the way down & back .. and, that are within a couple of hours driving time (after the business formalities are tended to).

I'll check the Good Sam Campgrnd guide, etc. - but, if there is anyone that may can/will recommend a good campground nearby - we'd appreciate any info!

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow, Magpye, this will be your first RU?! I'm so glad that you're making it ours, then! Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you're required to bring plants to swap. A Roundup is a gathering of DG friends, most of whom have only met through our keyboards. It's just that when you get a bunch of gardeners together, swapping is a natural. Just concentrate on getting yourselves down safely, I'm so excited to get to meet you!

Sigh! I wish htop could make it!

Trish, wow, you and Dave sure know how to spoil us! Looking forward to the snacks and refreshments list, and any way we can help you guys.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave and Trish, thank you for doing all those things for us.
Do I understand correctly that you are going to buy lunch for all of us?
How much is our share of the pavillion rental?
I am not sure that I understood your intentions correctly.
Josephine.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Before you finalize on your caterer, Dave, take Trish out to Junik's in Wellborn, (It's about 5 miles from Southwood Park.) Great BBQ sandwitch. Go down Rock Prarie, take a left onto Wellborn Rd, and then keep a watch on the left for Junik's.
Bob

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

That's correct!!! The pavilion and lunch is taken care of (either by DG or perhaps a sponsor).

Magpye- no plants are expected. Good thing, as Dave and I have absolutely nothing to share :)

Bob- thanks for the recomendation. We'll do our best to check it out.....having just moved here, we'll be depending on recomendations from the locals before we make a final decision.

Trish

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Trish and Dave, that is so generous of you!
Thank you both very very much, the two of you are sweethearts to do this.
Josephine.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Wonderful, we have a park/meeting site.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

And let's not forget lunch!!! We can bring snacks for the rest of the time. Woo Woo! Come on April!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Trish and Dave, thanks in advance for lunch. It's much appreciated, and I look forward to meeting you. These RU's are better than all the holidays rolled up together.

Mary Lee

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I went to College Station this weekend and I am very pleased with the park Dave has selected for us. It is close to parking, only about 50 foot to the shelter from the parking, and on a flat surface!!! There is a jungle jim mickey D's type setup for the kids, and a volleyball net for the young at heart. It is just off of Hwy 6 and away from the college traffic. Good job Dave!
