Announcing a rework of the forums, and Home Talk!

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

The last 2 days with the reworking of DG, I've got a too wide page on the forum listing pages ........not the message pages. They don't show the whole page at the right side. It will move over with the adjustment bar at the bottom but is it just me?

Mine shows the whole width of the page. IIn fact, I don't even have a bottom scroll bar. Must be your settings.

Indy, I have the same problem. I addressed it earlier in this thread.

Especially in plantfiles, the page is too wide for my 17" monitor, so I have to scroll back and forth to see between the pictures and details. I think adding the extra tab on top made it too wide for us. I had asked Dave up above if it would be possible to make some of the tabs two lines and narrower. For instance, Garden Talk, Garden Watchdog, and all the ones that are two words.

I just tried to 'watch thread' on two different forums, and it did not work. Is it my pc or a glitch?

Hmmm, on my computer, whether on AOL or Internet Explorer, the green stars are still showing up after the forum name, not in front of it. Maybe it's the "old cache" problem again. I'll just wait it out.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've also found the page a bit too wide for my 17" monitor. But there are lots of pages out there now which are deisgned for 19" monitors; so I didn't think too much of it.

Ann

The wide page is a real problem... I knew that when the tabs became too numerous, we would run into this.

BTW - it doesn't have anything to do with your monitor size, but rather the resolution. You can set the resultion to 1024x768 (which is what the majority of folks use) and then the page will fit nicely (even with a smaller monitor!)

Anyway, I need to figure something out with the tab width problem...

A few ideas:

1) As JoanJ mentioned, if you can take the two-word tabs, and make them two-liners, that might help.

2) Shorten the GBW to "Bookworm" and the GWD to "Watchdog" since there's a fair-to-middlin' chance they'll become broader than just gardening topics in the near future.

3) Combine Garden Terms & Botanary into one tab (not sure what to call it, but make it one tab with two links on the main page: one to GT, one to Botanary.

Or....work your usual web magic and come up with something better than any/all of these ;o)

I just wanted to add my "thank you's" for the new home tab. Everything just looks so great, and it's much easier to find things. My first gardening experiences haven't turned out that great, and I've been questioning whether or not I'll even garden this spring. Now, at least I can still come here and still have plenty of other things to "talk" about.

Hey Dave! That worked! I changed the resolution and now everything fits like it should again.

Thanks so much for the tip. It was starting to get very annoying the way it was, but your tip was a great quick fix for me.

Hey, Dave,

I tried the resolution to 1024x768,,,,,,,,,,It made the picture so big that I had no scroll bar on the right at all!....back to 800x 600 pixels.

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

My monitor is set at 1024 x 768, no scroll bar across the bottom here.

Indy, that's interesting, because it made all my stuff smaller. I wonder why the difference?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, shoe!

Still think this *news* is fantastic, and I am spreading the *news* to all of my non-DG friends.

Subtle enough?

A setting of 1024x768 is fine for those with young eyes. I like my print slightly larger.

Just wondering if the difference in resolution and screen size comes in with a normal monitor or a flat one. Mine is a flat one, 17" and factory set to 1024 x 768. I have no scroll bar at the bottom, and the normal scroll bar at the left, and everything fits fine. The size is not made smaller by this resolution.
My old computer was only a 15", and it was a nuisance to have to scroll across. The new one mostly has a good 1" or so at either side until the screen is enlarged with the box at the top right next to the shut-down 'X'.

I did a lot of research before I bought this computer so I got the right thing. The ordinary monitor is measured from corner to corner diagonally, BUT includes the plastic surround, which makes the ACTUAL screen a lot smaller.

The flat LCD monitor is measured also diagonally, BUT it is ONLY the screen that is measured, so a 17" screen WILL be 17". Try it.

Sorry, normal scroll bar at the RIGHT!

What was your previous pixel setting?

I have a 19 inch monitor. Everything else everywhere is fine at 8 00 x 600 pixels.......only the last one inch is missing on forum pages.
