Announcing a rework of the forums, and Home Talk!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

nice word pictures you two! mel, i already started the thread in this forum about skip to new, going to make my second post there now...

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I am not complaining nor am I trying to start trouble. I am just expressing my concern here: I just hope we don't get too big and lose that feeling of community and family. At the "other place" I never felt at home or much closeness.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I can understand your concerns, berrygirl. I had the same concerns after I had joined this wonderful little website, then it began to grow in leaps and bounds. I was afraid it would not be the same, and of course, it wasn't. I think we'll all just find our 'neighborhoods' which are towns within a city. There are corners of DG I seldom visit, only stumbling into them by accident from time to time, but when I do, I'm always made welcome. I think there will still be that core of comradery, no matter how big the site gets. Dave will keep building our neighborhoods, but we'll be welcome all over town.

Phoenix, MD(Zone 7a)

Weez what a wonderful way of putting it!!!!

Even more user friendly now. Love all the new forums. This is absolutely wonderful. I am thrilled. Thank you.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Would it be at all possible to wrap the text of the tabs so that ones like Garden Talk, Garden Watchdog,Garden Bookworm, and Garden Terms were two lines and the tabs a bit narrower?

Adding that extra tab makes the screen too wide for my 17 inch monitor, and I have to scroll back and forth. Especially in plantfiles. I have to scroll from the left to right to see the details and compare them to the pictures.

Edited to correct a spelling error.

Dave,
I'm not sure if I like the change yet or not as I REALLY hate change but the one thing that I don't like is that I can't find the Dirt Cheap thread. Has it been eliminated?

Dave,

The NEW and IMPROVED site looks awsome...Thanks for taking the time to make it alittle easier to find things....although i thought the previous was good...now it will be harder for me to get my butt up away from daves....heheheheh

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

There's now Trash to Treasure and Frugal Living...2 forums for this type of topic...(heh, heh...already been looking for them too!)

Here's another mental picture...Weeze is standing by the big picture window smoothing the front of her party dress....I'm lighting candles and putting out more napkins..don't want to sit, as I have a dress with those crunchy can-cans that I hated as a kid...and Dave is on his tricycle making loops from the driveway into the street watching for cars to arrive...(with his John Deere hat on)

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I hate change too.....usually, that is.

But I love the changes here. I have yet to find anything I don't like.

Thank you for the improvements!

Best,
nap

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

tattoo21_338, "Dirt Cheap" is still there, but it's now been renamed as "Frugal Living" (a little more straightforward and self-explanatory ;o)

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I like the stars and asterisks. Nice to follow. DonnaS

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I noticed quite a few of the new forums have had no activity on them yet. I know it's early and new and we're all getting our bearings here. Just wondering will any new forums be pulled due to lack of interest/participation?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

This is a different model than how we've created forums in the past. It's more the "build it and they will come" versus "add it on request" approach.

Given the different approach, I think Dave will be willing to give these new forums some time to get up to speed. But we suspect these new forums are on topics that are relevant to many of our current members, too. I'd expect to see our current membership helping generate momentum and enthuasiasm within the forums that reflect areas of personal interest to each of us.

Thanks Terry!

I was in chat for awhile. Did I miss a surprise?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Very interesting, dave. Looks like lots of room for growth! It's gonna be fun to go exploring, but time needs to be added to my day ..... :)

Gourd is the margin 'expander' I think - perhaps the zone could be taken out of ur location as it's also added below ur location?

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Yup weez, right after you left.

You have Dmail!

OOo... I was in the chatroom too but didn't hear what you're talking about. me too me too!

Okay, I said I love it a few message up. I've changed my mind. It takes entirely too much of my time to explore, read, respond, and, before I go on to another forum, there's an answer to one I just responded to and I have to go back to that one. The one that is especially bad about taking up all my time (and possibly money in the future with all the great ideas) is the Garden Tour forum. Entirely too inticing. How am I supposed to work with all this going on?!? lol

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL we need you to work on those extra day time hours Dave :-)

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I have one suggestion. With the names of the forums being different lengths the stars are kind of overwhelming and scattered around the page.
What if the stars and asterisks were put into separate columns before the names of the forums.
With the forum names being typed letters it wouldn't be so noticable that they did not all end in a certain place.
Just a suggestion, and not sure whether it has been addressed by someone else above or not since it is such a long thread and I just glanced at it.
Have no idea how much trouble this would be to change since it is probably already sorted by alphabet.

Dave, I love the changes and find it *very* user friendly and easy to navigate around. This is the only site I've found to be so accomodating. Thanks for all your hard work and effort to please us all. :)

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

Elaine,
I'm really really glad it is working well for you, I did wonder about that.

MG, he just needs to work on the "hours" thing. LOL Not enough of em. ;)

*No Doubt!!*

rotflol do you have dust *elephants*? mine are just dust rats. For now! but with all these forums they will soon be dust-hippos

You are the MAN, Dave! Thank you for all you do for us.

I think I've found my home in the Fragrant Gardening Forum, lol. As it looks, we just may take popularity over the Brug Forum, this is all so exciting!

I'm still hoping we can have state specific forums, it would be so much easier to meet neighbors, plan get-togethers and swaps. (The Round-up forum is too busy in season.)
I still can't believe I've met some of my best pals right here :)

Thanks again,
Vi

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I really like the stars showing the forums with new messages and having the forums listed alphabetically. And I LOVE being able to watch a forum just by clicking the top!! My "skip to new" isn't always working either. I'm looking forward to the "more hours in the day" patch, Dave. Do you think you could get it done, say, by the end of March? LOL

~ Marylyn

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

How about this? A "more hours in the day" forum, when you go in there you are transported to a netherworld where the time/space continuum is altered only as you wish it to be. Neither time nor space are ever a problem for you, never mind the continuum!

How about it Dave?
:-)

Yeah Dave, you've managed everything else! Why not?

Central, WI(Zone 4a)

I would definitely be interested in a More Hours in a Day Forum,,,,sign me up,,,LOL

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Dave, I really like Windy's suggestion about placing the stars in front of the forum. It would tidy it up considerably, and make it easier and faster to know where you want to go.

Much like the 'yes/no' column in front of the threads within a forum.

maggiemoo, I'll try to have that ready by the first day of this coming April.

nap: that's already done. :)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes you are becoming #1. I know of several that have left the competitors site including me. I love DG and I love the changes. I've only been here a few months but I feel at home. I still have alot of exploring to do and I'm really looking forward to it. :)

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I only got part way through this thread before I had to leave the computer , but I saw someone who reported a glitch with the "Skip to new" skipping all the way now to the new message area. I also experienced that yesterday and thought maybe it was fixed, but it JUST happened to me on the Coffee and ... thread for Wednesday. Hope that can be fixed.

Otherwise, I like the changes. Thanks, Dave.

Dave,

As in April Fool's?? LOL

Okay Dave, I'll be holding my breath waiting for that forum on April 1st!
