2nd Annual Southern Cal RU, July 8th 2006
hiya sheran,
that's a lot of requests....lol.
As the time gets closer you'll be able to get directions to our ranch as well as find out about food and plant trades right here or in the roundup forum.
best,
don
DrDon,
Just checked out some of your inspiring sculptural work.
The mosaic couch looks like a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the company of other gardeners, especially with a glass of Reisling in hand.
Nice spread that you have down there.
hiya deviant_deziner
Thanks, that means something coming from you. As with all gardens, it's a work in progress, evolving as bizarre materials become available. Hope you can find a way down here to meet the amazing group of diverse gardeners that will be here. It would also be fun to discuss Gaudi, Escher, or just look at an apple tree and think about Cezanne....lol. It looks like this year we'll have greater attendance from Northern California, Arizona, Texas, and elsewhere. I'm contemplating doing a tornado made with pink lawn flamingos and calling it the burbs. If it is somewhat close to completion by the time July rolls around I'm thinking attendee can add a bit of garden gnome, lawn jockey, the grill of a Humvee or other inappropriate flotsam so it can be a community statement of the anti kitsch movement and an endorsement of it's long passed leader Heironymus Bosch...lol.
best,
don
best to you,
don
_THIS year I plan on making it.
Might as well plan on something.
Fat lot of good it usually does.
rephrase that to read:
plans are what one makes while life goes on
Woohoo!
Blooms it would be great to see you!
best,
don
Another RU at your ranch sounds like a lot of fun, drdon. Be sure and let me know the particulars when they are set. Donna and Janice, if you need any help in setting up, let me know.
Thanks,
Chuck
Where is Temecula ? I'm in SF area , but have a sister-in-law and a couple of friends always asking when are you commimg ?
Yes, please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
Tonyjr, Temecula is about an hour south of Ontario down the 15 freeway.. .. Wine country. drdon has an absolutely beautiful setup there, horses, greenhouse...and his home...you have got to see it. Quite impressive. Great people too! I went last year and had a very nice time, it's really nice meeting people you only type to...funny how people don't look anything like you imagined!! Also met a girl there that I went to high school with...she used to live 3 doors down from me. Small world. Maybe I'll bring my Tony Jr!
Blooms turned me on to DrDon's announcement -- she's tentatively planning to postpone her annual spring trip to my house (Orange County, from Moab UT) until late June/July -- so as to be able to attend, with me!
~'spin!~
Drdon,
Is it July yet? LOL
Seriously if there is anything I can do to make the RoundUp in Temecula go smoother, please let me know.
Thanks,
Chuck
July is really only 3 months away well, 3 months and a week.
LOL
Does seem a long waaay away.
'sokay, the better the anticipation.

Has anyone started the food thread yet???? Let me know what I can do to help.
Wooo-Hooo! This sounds so incredible!!! I'm soo looking forward to meeting more crazy DG CA gardeners! And Artisits!!! Wow!
Terese here, Stained Glass, Clay, mosaic and mixed media sculpture (and tatoo) artist gardening bird rescuer here. Can we say "eclectic" ??
Pretty new to DG, just subbed this year. Isn't Temecula mountain-ish? I'm in the Hugh Desert, and it will be nice to get away from the 115 F or so temps (or monsoons and flash floods, as Mother Nature will have it) in July.
DrDon,
Where do I find the pics of your sculptural mosaics and such as mentioned by deviant?! I'd LOVE to see them. I am working on some sculptural effects in my front yard using sections of old steel quonset hut frames as the base, "plans" to add wood, stone, mosaic and vartious pieces of rusted metal.
*dreaming of Escher and Bosch discourse...of dappled light and shadow evoking images of Cezanne, Monet and Van Gogh...of sculptural statements on Kitsch evoking picasso's volkswagon monkey scuplture (can't remember the title..."Baboon and Young", perhaps?) ot Warhol's more blatant statements....thinking of an appropriate (and transportable addition for the piece...*
Hi DW,
I've seen you posting around the forums, but haven't had a chance to say hello yet. So, hello and welcome to this great site.
First of all, if you click on drdons name, it will take you to his home page. If you click on his garden tour diary, you will be able to see lots of his beautiful things. You can also check out the threads he has started and read and see some of the other things he has done. He is a very multi-talented person and very nice and helpful in many ways.
He hosted the RU last year and we had a fabulous time. He and his wife Pam were wonderful hosts, as well as his ranch hands. It was so nice to meet several of the members I haven't met yet. I have hosted 2 very small RU's at my home here in Huntington Beach in the last 3 yrs., so had met a few of them already. The time goes by so fast, with trading plants, talking, eating and just trying to meet everyone.
His home is located in a hot area also, (not mountainous) but a few rolling hills.
Don is very busy right now with ranch stuff, but he should be returning here soon. When the time gets closer, we usually start new threads regarding food and plant trading. I look forward to meeting you and all the other new members that can attend.
Donna
Thanks Donna, let me know what I can do to help.
Thank you, Donna!
I think we ran into each other in chat??? Nice to meetcha! I'm very much looking fwd to this RU, and will be happy to bring food, chairs..whatever I can do to help. Perhaps someday I can host one out here on our 40 acres. I'm geting together seeds for sharing, and propagating lots of Rosemary and flowering things right now, getting spearmint starters and bladderpod from my neighbor, along with some of my wee veggies and it's almost time for Cottonless Cottonwood cuttings. In another month I'll be potting Black Locust suckers.. Hopefully I'll have something to "bring to the table" by July!
Hey, Weegy! See you 2 in chat?! Heading over there, now.
(edited for Black [not honey] Locust, ie False Acacia. Ours have pink and white blooms.)

DW
Welcome to Dave's -Pleased to meet you.
I have family (a brother & sister) in the high desert, I was briefly a Wrightwoodian (2 years - but 3 winters)
I'm about 10 minutes from Don's and although we probably won't hit 115 at the round up it will be hot.
I am so looking forward to this year's RU, can't wait to see people again and meet new ones.
See ya there
Dove
DW, bladderpod? the native plant that has the wonderful pale lavender pods on it in the spring? oh me one, me one please. I see them when we go out to Joshua from Crystalspin's [DD] place in Orange County. They are gorgeous.
I can tell you that Don's roundup last year was absolutely the best! It is so fun to meet people that you've only typed to! Looking forward to seeing and meeting new DG'ers. The drive to Temecula is quite pleasant and Don's home is beautiful. Looking forward to July!
Thanks for the welcome, Dovey, and Blooms I'll try to get a plant started for you, but the transplants are tricky because of their long taproot. I'll see if good neighbor, R, has collected any seeds, otherwise we may have to wait til the seedpods to dry this year. I'll be sure to keep you high on my TODO list! Here's the plantfiles link for the bladderpod:

Is that what you are thinking of?
Terese
Oh yeah, by the way, welcome Terese!
Hey Dove, what's been going on? DH still here with you? Looking forward to the RU!
Thanks, weegy! I lived practically next door to you for over 10 years. Pomona, right near the fairplex. Boy we had a great garden there!
Fairplex, were you in Ganesha? That area still hasn't changed much. Enjoy the LA county fair still and the races still go on there. Can't wait to meet you.
Hi Weegy,
Things are great.
Since M came home we have been busy knocking down walls to remodel the kitchen, living & dining room area into 1 great room. We're not the formal room type.
So yep he's still here and I'm crossing my fingers, knocking on wood and anything else I can thing of to make sure he gets to stay for a good long while.
He's really looking forward to the round-up.
Ya know I haven't thought of Ganesha in years... oh my gosh I loved driving though there, it was so lush.
I hadn't thought of the "Pomona Fair" in ages, remember we used to get free tickets every year at school.
I wonder if they still do that?
Another memory is summer nights driving through the area and smelling the orange blossoms - ahhhh, that was nice.
A little trivia here - Pomona is the goddess presiding over fruit trees.
No more free fair tickets Dove. Pomona is no more fruit country either, as Cucamonga is no longer grape country. Ganesha hasn't changed, the beautiful homes are still on the hills there. We camp up around there at a beautiful campground called East Shores, it overlooks Puddingstone Lake, I know you remember Puddingstone, the next best thing to the beach! We can reminisce at the RU!
oh my gosh Puddingstone!
Totally forgot Puddingstone....
What a blast from the past *L*
I lived just down from Ganesha Hills...on McKinley, between Garey and White. We had a big corner lot with an old orchard house built in 1902. We had orange (valencia), lemon, guava, loquat, fig, tangering, peach and walnut trees, concord and black grapes...a big garden, 250 potted plants on the front porch. It was our "little corner of paradise". We were leasing with an option, but I couldn't manage it, (the purchase) after I lost my husband, Jerry, in 1998.
Puddin' Puddle!!! My daughter and I swam there all summerand my Hubby fished there on his days off and brought me fresh trout for breakfast! Yummi! And the Hot Tubs! And we used to walk to the Fair from our house, and let friends park there to save the cost of parking at the Fairplex. Weren't the free concerts at the Fair, great? *happy sigh* Remembering good ol' days!
And who could forget the Winter Nationals... Va-room...
The hot tubs are for nudists now!
Oh, weegy!
That's the great thing about those hottubs! They're protected on all three sides but the one facing the lake! It's so luxurious to go up at night, take candles, a basket of sexy munchies, a bottle of something sparkling, and your special someone and.....a TOWEL!! *LOL*
And yes, Dovey...Winternationals. We could hear them from the house (as well as the drag boats at Puddinpuddle). We went a few times. I even took my Grama (who lives with me) when she was 85!! She loves the drags!!
wow Id love to go but its on my birthday so I have to see if my family has anything planned but what a fun way to spend a birthday it would be.
Well Steph, just think of it as a REALLY big birthday party. lol We have had several members have their birthdays while attending our RU's and we just help them celebrate.
Since it's your birthday, aren't you supposed to do what "you" want to do anyway. :-) I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you can have at one of these RU's. I have attended 5 RU's,with including the 2 I hosted here at my home and my DH and I even went to the Kentucky RU 3 yrs. ago. We are planning on attending the No. Cal RU on April 29th.
Think hard on it, K?
Donna
We'll sure have some reminiscing to do at the RU huh, DW and Dove!??!?
You bet.... !
I can't wait!!! What fun! I just started about a hundred Aristolochia Elegans I received in trade from calalily. If I can baby these things....might have a few to share!!
Look here:

I think it's soooo cool! *crossing my green fingers*
I just talked to dh and i think im gonna be able to go ... what afun b day it will be.. Its in temecula?
Yeah steph,
You won't be dissapointed I promise. Now, start propagating some of your lovely plants....like your geraniums....hehe
