I trsut that we are keeping Anne and Ann sorted out above. Maybe we should use initials or something as I'm sure that I've been referred to as Anne a couple of times, but then I'm not always quite sure with the volume of messages. As for me, I totally missed anything above that might have suggested that we not post pics. (And I probably would have ignored it anyway). LOL
In regard to other threads, you might want to check out one on the Hosta forum about posting our own pictures (of ourselves). Not too many have complied, but a few that are known to this thread have. Me - I gave a link to a pic.
I also just started a thread about whether or not to cover up our hostas with leaves. Not much commentary yet.
I'm gonna ask, but haven't yet figured out where, about bringing in my Hibiscus which winters inside. It's in the bathtub now as I've sprayed it thoroughly with the shower and I'm trying to get the pot clean. Last winter I battled aphids all winter long even after I got more toxic spray than soap and water and I'd like to avoid a recurrance this year if I can. It's way too big for me to be carting around very much. Maybe you gobs can tell me where best to ask that (or give me the answer).
Gotta go rescue what I can from the garden before tonight's frost.
Ann (the one with NO e) ;-)
Coffee and...Part 42...! :-D
Ann (with no e LOL) You might want to check the stats on the hibiscus variety you have. Here in WI, there are several cultivars that are hardy in our zone (4b-5a). Any boy do I know what you're talking about getting 'bugs' indoors coming in with pots in fall. Last year it was spider mites and fruit flies (or fungus gnats). They drove me NUTS!! (Not that I have very far to go. hehe)
~julie~
Oh Julie i knew you did not mean anyone in particular just thought for downloading the page I would be supportive in the no picture decision!
LOL
:-)))))
Since I have joined DG a year ago last June, I have posted in owls and as some of you know I still do. I have used Darius's thread about "grand mother's Apron" to tell my story about her, if you are intersted in reading it please find her thread, I loved writing it I also it it into my blog
Maria
Maria...I don't have a lot of time to go hunting threads. (Actually, I *purposely* don't go into forums where someone's thread is posted in order to find it. If I did, I'd *never* get back *here*! LOL)
Could you post a link please, I'd *love* to read the story.
~julie~
Quixk question, a friend in another forum, her daughter found some pine nuts and with them her hands are coated in pine sap. How do you get it off. She has tried every soap in her house.
LOL...I *know* that feeling *very* well!
Dawn dishwashing liquid works the best for me. I used to use 'Irish Spring' bath soap...and Ajax dishwashing soap. Now Dawn is my pick.
~julie~
(LIVES in PINEY woods~)
Okay does it come out of clothes or should she just chalk them up to play wear now?? Poor little thing, she is just covered in it. Mom gave her a bath with witch hazel and that managed to get it out of her hair. She is sending DH up to the store for some Dawn dishwashing soap.
Dont know if you all have ever heard of liquid gloves. Well so far its helping keep the sap from transferring to mom. Going to buy me a case for when we move, I am sure I will have clay stained hands there.
Thanks Julie
Carat, Eucalyptus oil will do it - without hurting the skin. I had to get the stuff out of my dogs coats on a regular basis - we had pines at the bottom of the yard. You will smell of cold cure for a whilr though!!!
Two Annes , even if they are spelt different and two Carols, both with no 'e' gosh this is getting confusing! To add to the confusion my middle name is Anne too, so its no good using that. I'll just have to continue being the English Carol, or the Xmas one if you prefer. (Birthday is Christmas day, hence the name)
Carol
(the UK one)
Julie, if you want to read it go do Darius's mail and look under her threads she started it wwill be under 'Grandma's Apron' this is the only way I know how to get it to you, sorry, but be warned it is very, very long.
Maria
Aria, is this it?

Hi there you gabby GOBs, I read a bunch this morning, then went to town and we have a new thread with something like 45 posts! Julie, when you started this I bet you never throught the coffee klatch would grow like some out of control invasive weed. Just think what's gonna happen when we all quit gardening for the winter and have time to talk!!!
My Monarda (bee balm) is out in full sun in a very hot dry climate and it blooms it's head off and has grown so much that it has smothered out my purple coneflower. They looked good together while there was still some space between them, alas, I should have moved the coneflower last fall. I saw it briefly last spring but I'm sure it is history now.
Well, my plan for the flower bed I was working on yesterday changed today with the chance meeting of another gardener in town who asked me if I wanted 4 climbing roses she is rescuing from somebody's soon to be remodeled yard. They were going to be thrown away! She decided to rescue them not knowing what she would do with them and then I came up the stairs when she was going down. I have no idea at this point what colors they are but that's ok. I'm giving her a box of iris I dug out.
Carat, tell her to use some terpentine on the pine sap. Otherwise it will have to wear off.
Somebody was mentioning the store that is "restructuring" and showing the long time employees the door. A few years ago Wells Fargo Bank bought another banking company which included one of our local banks (in a town with only 4) and replaced all the employees with imports from California. Big, big mistake. Most of the locals just started banking elsewhere and WF found itself with a money loosing situation, and eventually sold the building and property to one of the local banks. They sure didn't make any friends around here.
When I was in town today (dental cleaning) I went thrift store shopping and came out with a lot of stuff. 2 large plastic bowl shaped planters that look like terra cotta, 35 cents each, a roll of green wire edging that I will cut into small pieces and make support rings for floppy plants, 95 cents, a like new t-shirt with cats on it for a friend for $2.50, a classical CD for about $2, and a couple of other misc things. Thrift stores are so much fun.
Have a great evening everyone.
Yasmeer, yes it is, thank you, still so not know how to do this though many have tried to tell me but I forget , using it so seldom
Maria
I love the thrift stores too and when I am in Chicago, my DD and I have a ball and find a lot of STUFF....Here they are all Expensive. What gives......The dollar stores are cheaper and the stuff is new. Where are their heads??????
Off to some more lurking...late kids..
Hap
Thrift stores are the best! Before ebay I used to buy stuff in there you would not belies how valueablethey are to day, my children have some of very beautiful antique pieces, of old glass, p0ttery and funiture, My daughter wanted a hoosier cabinet I found onee for $15.00 in perfect condition. that was in the 70's
Maria
Hey, GOB's and Gobettes.. AND Robert!
I'm back after 4 days away and missed two whole threads! (I'll catch up on them later.)
Didn't find a property to buy, and came home to find a rent increase from my landlord, effective Jan.1. Guess I will be moving! (His increase is because of heating costs, but my social security check didn't increase due to increased heating costs.)
I'll post later or tomorrow after I have rested and caught up on 251 emails and 96 threads "watched" LOL.
My best deal was at a restaurant supply house. (I'm a chef and was looking for equipment) I strolled back to the "small wares" such as tongs, little dishes, forks, spoon,..etc. In looking in a box of stainless steel flatware, something shone like it shouldn't. I check it out and found a STERLING SILVER. I marched up to the counter and asked how much the box was....for some reason he was not pleased with me and gave me a rediculous price of $.50 a piece. (The box should have not been more than $2.00.) I said OK, went back to the back of the store, emptied out the box on the floor and and picked out 23 pieces of beautiful silver.
Ha Ha, good for you, Happy, what a find!
Edited to day welcome you back, Darius! Wow, that's a lot of email, lucky you. Too bad you could not find a place, and on top of it land lord decided to up the rent
Maria

Happy that is awesome. And its a nice pattern to boot.
Darius, welcome home. Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for. But did you get the second opinion you were trying for??
Mary, it seems as though everytime I walk away for what I think is just a moment, I come back and I am reading 20 minutes of back posts so its not just you. Thanks for the terpentine suggestion. Mom got an aweful lot of it off but Jade says her hands are still icky feeling.
Thrift stores here suck. Everything is so overpriced and most of it is in bad shape.
Re pine sap - was it Carat? You can use mineral spirits if you have it around (also called Varsol) or nicer on the hands would be one of the citrus hand cleaners that you find for cleaning auto grease off hands. Stores that sell car supplies should have something like that. Or what my dad always used - DL Hand cleaner.
Welcome back Darius. Sorry about the rent increase. Good luck as you decide where to move.
Hap - what a great buy!
Julie, I have no idea what sort of Hibiscus it is. My former next-door neighbour gave me a cutting - probably 10 years ago. I've always kept it inside in the winter. But now it's as tall as I am even though I cut it back regularly. We'll hope for the best. Last winter was the only winter I had problems with it.
Ann
Good-nite Jon-Boy.......
Casey, when I get pine sap on my hands while working outdoors, I just pick up a hand full of dirt...rub it into the sticky spots then wash it off when I come in. I do use a nail brush, hot water, and some elbow grease. I feel sorry for poor little Jade. :-) She must have really gotten into a mess of fresh pine stuff.
Mary...when I started this thread (s) a long ago...I *never* expected it go past session #2! LOL Much less *42*! But I love meeting and greeting so many wonderful people...I feel like we've created our own little 'town' here.
Ooops! I hear CSI (Vegas) music coming on...that one's my favorite.
Bye for now! :-D
~julie~
Ann, thanks, I have some mineral spirits here. Mom may come by tomorrow and get some if she still needs it. Mom emailed me a picture, poor thing is red from all the scrubbing.
Just ordered Pizza. Meat lover's and Cheese lover's and an extra order of cinnamon stick for those with a sweet tooth. I let you all know when it gets here.
Oh let me know for sure but only for the cinnamon sticks I love those with that icing--- sadly not on my diet
Everyone has been busy today ! Glad to see you all
Anne
Magoobu, these are on your diet. Fat free. Trust me.
Julie, that was a good one tonight on CSI, don't you think?
Carat want some of those cinnamon sticks, thank you
Maria
Googone works on any kind of sticky residue, and wouldn't be so hard on tender hands....and it doesn't smell like cough medicine. Not too pricey either.
Only peeking in for a minutes, will write more in the morning.
Wow, almost 45 minutes and nobody has posted! Probably 6 more will while I'm typing this.
Carat, thanks for asking, but unless some of your sewing machines are antiques, I doubt you'll have a bobbin that will fit mine. Mine is an old Davis treadle machine that was probably manufactured in the late 1800's to very early 1900's. I posted a picture of it way back in one of the past incarnations of this thread.
M5 thanks for the offer to keep an eye out for the right size bobbin. With a few people looking there's a much better chance that one might materialize eventually. I've been getting the feeling that the 36mm ones are pretty rare.
Welcome back, darius. Sorry that you didn't come back with good news and found more bad news when you got home. Seems like something's got to break SOMETIME for you!
Hi Maria. Glad you're feeling better and have finally been getting some rest.
I'm waiting for a call from a supposed customer who's been e-mailing me since yesterday evening about a rush order for something from my website. I had it all set up for her, but then she balked at paying a whole $1.95 to register a credit card with paypal. Now she has my home phone number and I'm wondering if we're going to get a phone call at 1 AM since she's out on the west coast. RRRRrrrr retail! I have a magnet in my store that says "Show me someone with a deep loathing for all mankind and I'll show you someone who works in retail" I really don't want to be a pain, but I just can't help remarking on a couple of recent posts about the little businesses with the personal touch. You probably didn't even think about it, but I sure noticed the bits about "hadn't been there in a couple of years" etc. Geez guys, how do you expect us little guys to survive if you only drop in on the rare occasion? I often get the same thing from customers. They tell me how they bought their first radio control car from me fifteen years ago and how we helped them out a lot ----- right after telling me how they just bought their newest one on the internet for less than I pay wholesale. Sorry! I just couldn't keep all that inside at the moment.
Okay, hadn't intended to go on a rant. On to better things. Fall foliage. It doesn't seem to be in the cards for a spectacular year, but it's still pretty and the Fall woods still smell just as good to me. We were planning to take a ride up the Mohawk Trail, but it looks like it's going to be lousy weather all weekend, so maybe not.
DH cooked most of supper this evening ---- a turkey breast with bread stuffing, but he was sniffling so hard by the time we got home that the rest of the preparations fell to me. Help yourselves to turkey, stuffing, and gravy (afraid we used up the veggies).
Good luck with the puppy training, bal. Kittens are soooo much easier. They may try to eat the kitty litter the first time, but they usually teach themselves right after that.
This household is doing its share in the "fat cat" department. My black cat kind of "drapes" over most of whatever chair she's in and I think she's given up all thought of grooming anything after about her mid-point. We also have one named "Slim" who was a starving stray and now seems intent on entering the Goodyear Blimp lookalike contest sometime in the near future.
Who was it that mentioned a "brain store"? I think this model is about due for a trade-in.
Oh yeah, I just remembered the bit about the dreaded self portrait photo. Not me! I am definitely not photogenic. If you take a look at the old family photos here you'll see what I mean. See that moccasin toe peeking out from behind the biggest tree in the area? Yup, that's me at the ripe old age of 14. Cameras anywhere in my vicinity tend to arouse my natural burrowing instinct.
Enough blather for now. Goodnight everybody.
Good Grief Charlie Brown ! So many posts and so little time. Mineral spirits (paint thinner) work on pitch and is easier to wash off. Good luck, hope Jade is OK with all the scrubbing.
Welcome home Darius, the rent increase sucks ! Hope a new and better home is in the very near future.
All day was spent in doing 3 more sections of fence. Have to put an additional slat between each pair of boards to keep the little tyke in. Two more and our side is finished. Imari still hasn't figured out the potty requirements, but she's a smart little cookie. 9 hrs of cutting, hauling, digging, nailing and fitting left me pooped. Sweet dreamseveryone+++.
Love those pictures so sweet!
Off to bed sorry not to catch up sooo tired!
Anne
Sweet dreams all!!!
Don't know for sure about Pitch, but THE BEST way to get rid of tar is BUTTER! Just cream some butter into the tar, and it easily creams and can be washed away with soap & water. Works on tar spots on your car, too.
McCool, I do understand what you mean with it being hard for the little guy with some of us only visiting every couple of years, but its about a 6 hour drive from here and with family medical issues it was unavoidable. He has since gone mail order with dry ice so I do order quite a bit now. I am with you on the camera shy thing. When going through photo's at my parents house even DH noticed that my pile was a fraction to everyone elses, guess it has been an issue my whole life. Thanks for the turkey and gravy over mashed potatoes. Yummmmyyyyyy.......
Wouldn't haven't eaten so much pizza earlier if I had known that was coming. LOL
Meezer thanks, the googone worked and we now have a sap free Jade. Still a little red from all the scrubbing but I think she will be just fine.
Thanks all
Lordy, Lordy, you guys are wordy!! I thought I was keeping up here, but I didn't sign on for 2 hours and almost another thread has been used up.
Darius, THAT REALLY SUCKS!! A rent increase because of heating costs, and your heater isn't even vented! Come on now. Sounds like you deserve a better land lord than that. Hope your search comes up pay dirt. Someone surely appreciates a good renter.
I love the green house thingies. I want a permanent one, but DH hasn't been convinced yet. I have a small one which has 4 shelves, covered in plastic, and it does okay, but only for a small amount of seed trays. Okay, step up the campaign for a greenhouse.
Bal, those doggies have their own schedule. When I was training Mr. B., I took him out about every hour. It didn't take long for him to get the idea of where he was supposed to go. How old is the new fur kid? I took on a 14 month old Jack Russell several years ago who had been raised in a kennel. I wanted a house dog, so dedicated every waking moment to house training her. She never got the hang of it. So I think if you start young enough, it comes pretty easily.
Don't mean to slight anybody, but this body is telling me it is bed time.
As to the photo thread, I will be willing to post my pic, but with the warning "View at your own risk". I'm not a photogenic person, so every pic I have of me is sort of stilted, sober, and that is not the way I am in actual life.
Didn't sleep well last night, so I hope to make up for it tonight.
Good night all, fuzzy dreams to you.
Night, JohnBoy.
LOL...it looks like the traffic we've generated today might just be telling us we're going to have to have a new thread by tomorrow morning. (Thank goodness there's a 'Night Owl' thread to catch you 'up all nighters'. LOL)
Maria...yessireebob! I just have to have my daily 'fix' of crime solving. :-D If it's not CSI during prime time, it's Cold Case Files after the news. :-}
Glad Jade got fixed up, Casey. (And Darius...I *knew* that trick with butter! I sat here all evening trying to remember what it was that my Mom used to use. CRISCO!!! Geez! It worked real well getting the grease out of my dad's cotton khaki work clothes. Don't try it on any with polyester, tho. OH boy! What a mess!)
Welcome home Darius...sorry about the bad news with the rent increase. I have to agree with Robert (love those puppy shots!) had to say...maybe there's a better (and cheaper!) place in your near future.
Sheila...looks like that "S" word may be showing its ugly face around our area over the weekend...better get it ALL wrapped up tomorrow!
It's been a bad night for angina for me tonight. I may need to go see the doc in the morning. Right now, I'm headed to bed. If I'm late (or don't show up in the morning, don't worry!!) and if the thread (like a diaper LOL) needs 'changing'...Darius you're in charge!
See y'all tomorrow!
Have a great night...and rest well,
~julie~
Good night all,
Maria
LOL, was the last one to say good night, so let me be the first one to say good morning every body and how are you?
Maria
Morning Maria! I was just thinking of you as I had a caramel apple for breakfast. LOL My mom brought me one last night and it didnt sound good, so I had it this morning after my usual peanutbutter/toast stuff. It was the fruit part of my meal!!
The TV chest that I have been drooling over is on sale - so guess what I am doing??? YUP- buying it! DH put up a little stink, but couldn't say toooo much as he just bought himself a new chain saw. He told me it was for both of us - I used the same line back at him!
Chilly morning here- 35 deg. I set off the wood stove, so I am toasty - actually a little warm!! But I am sitting on the heating pad too!
My plan for today (after I get myself the tv stand) is to did up the remaining geraniums- probably 15 of them left. Then pack away 3 huge clumps of dahlia tubers. I still have two daylilies to get in the ground- shame on me!
Welcome back Darius- let's here all the wild things you did while you were absent for 4 days. Sorry about the increase in rent tho - bummer. We went to get diesel last night and it was 3.44 - yikes- my pension went up 3% and the increase in medical will be more, so I am going in the hole. grrrrr
My stomach growled , so I had two pieces of toast with apricot marmelade and two cupsof tea, oh and OJ with my med.
Could not sleep worth a hootlast night, every sooften had to cough but a so much better.
Did anyone see on the news about Taunton, MA and its dam? that is about ten miles from here and where my daughter teaches, but everything was closed for fear the dam will not hold up, so far so good. It is a very old dam, probably should have been
reinforced some time ago.
Maria
