Regular Gas per gallon PART II

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Paid $2.69 tonight. It was $2.73 when we went into town at 2PM.
Coming down!

I got a 3 day delay in my trip to North Carolina for work. I am hoping that will knock it back down to reasonable-er. LOL

Is it true that there are gas shortages? My mom is delaying a visit to Mich because
she's afraid it will be hard to find gas. I saw the post from Florida but no where else.
Are prices up & supplies OK or is there really a country-wide shortage?

Tam

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Are you kidding ? They will never run out with prices this high!
Even back in the 70's, there was never a shortage. As soon as the price went high enough, plenty of gas was around & never heard the word shortage again.
What made stations short of gas this time was people trying to stock up & they made some empty for a time.
My thoughts,
Bernie

Timberlea, NS(Zone 6a)

There's no shortage here; Alberta produces more gas than Canada can use, and they didn't have any production slow-down. But our prices went up anyway!

If one gas station raises its prices, it's gouging; if they all do it, it's business as usual. Tough noogies for us! Grrrr....

Rhonda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Alberta just doesn't have large enough pipes to send a greater volume down south. We were in Alberta three days ago and gas was $1.12 per litre (compared to a high of $1.19 a litre (or $4.00/U.S gallon) in Saskatchewan).

Alberta is going to be soooooooo incredibly wealthy by the time this is over......never mind that the amount of gas in the tar sands exceeds what Saudi Arabia has.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Just found gas at $2.86. Prices are dropping a bit around here.

Deb

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Filled up today, $28+ for 9 gallons.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Here, a station can be fined if they sell below the standard price. If any other businesses would operate that way, it's called price fixing & you go to jail. Looks like OIL COMPANIES rule. Do as they please.
If you look around there are many products, especially in construction & building codes, that do no good but are made out of oil so they are required to be used. Does the word plastic ring a bell ?
Bernie

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

today there was varried prices from 2.80 to 3.09

some gas stations are out of gas here but some are out of the higher ones premmium and super.

there still are a few here that dont have any at all.

the price gouging is a problem here. one station charged 3.75 a half gallon yes you read it right . he is in the process of being fined for this.

its really gotten crazy here and it doesnt look any better.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

filled up (well, almost) at Sam's Club in Amarillo for 274.9 a gallon!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

We had gas for a whole day here, but now it is gone again. I paid 2.77 for mid grade on that day. We are supposed to get more this weekend.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

It's illegal to raise prices on what is already in their tanks at the stations, so I don't know how they are getting away with it. There are a lot of complaints going to the Attorneys General all over the place, so hopefully some action will be taken. Why are the oil companies all recording such huge, unbelievable, in-the-billions of dollars profits if we are so hard up for gas?

BTW, sugarweed, most people in Fayetteville don't buy "on base". Only the military and the civilian employees can do that, or even have access to the base. There are a lot of them, true, but there are more of us not connected to the base that have no access. It's been a "closed base" since 9/11.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

there is no shortage. they are just making more money because they are allowed to, in an effort to reduce use & prevent possible shortage :-(

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Okie Dokey Diane. What is the price there today?
I am headed that way early in the morning.
I really have to watch what I say on this subject, but when a company maintains and repairs a facility, that is a legitimate business expense and if an electric company doesn't do it, it's tatamont to treason. Yet the refineries are being shut down to half the number we had 25 years ago.
I don't like repairing them. Those towers are a long climb straight up for a gal 59 to be making. I worked on one in Philidelphia in 2002.

Filled up at $2.979 last night! Interestingly, many of the pumps had plastic
bags over the nozzle. I noticed someone took off the plastic and pumped
gas. Made me wonder if they lowered the price but didn't want to sell too
much at the reduced amount. (It was about $3.279 the day before).

Tam

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I don't know the current price, Sidney. Sorry. I have been laid up recovering from surgery. I can only sit for a few minutes at a time, and can't drive yet. I have been hearing that it's hovering around $3 or a little less. There was a run on gas right after the hurricane, but that was evidently a bad rumor and ended quickly. I just hate how dishonest "they" are being with us about the supplies available. The Wall Street prices are for futures and have nothing to do with what's available at any given moment.

I hope your trip is a good one and that you will be safe climbing those towers. Sorry I'm not available to be a good hostess this time, but maybe you'll be back again.

BTW, the cuttings look fantastic. When I was working with them, I noticed that one of them was bent and that was causing the top to be so wilt-y, so I cut it off and now have two of that one! They sure are pretty colors.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Glad you like the coleus. I wont be climbing towers this trip.
We are repairing a package boiler at a seed oil place there.
I just thought you might have had a glance at gas prices
Diane, I certainly wouldn't expect you to play hostess even if your surgery wasn't fresh. I didn't even keep your last name or addy, lol.
After I get settled i will d-mail my phone # and you can call if you want.
The last one I couldn't remember I call flame, but growers most likely have a name for it.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Back down this morning. Filled up at $2.76 a gallon! Woohoo!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Well at the Fl/Ga border it was 2.56, But exit 29 is always cheaper. Exit 29, 2.79 Had to fill up. $38. Refill in SC @ 2.88
$31.
Shafted on room for first night $52.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

well, I just figured out what we py for gas here, and this is the norm, no katrina effect

it costs about 3 lira - 2.30 dollars a liter, and i looked it up, there are 3.7842 liters in a gallon, so you multiply 2.30 x 3.7842 an come up with a whoppin 8.70 per gallon......
shoooooooo, forget those road trips im constantly taking....I'm sittin tight.....
I knew it was spendy, cause i'd be filling 20 lira worth (15 dollars) , 50 (38 ollars) lira worth every 3-4 days. and I just went to Izmir, about 260 km from here, and spoent at least 200 lira on gas (153 dollars)

so that is mind boggling, i really didnt think our gas was that expensive, i mean i knew it was epensive, but i guess i never really thought about it in detail......(or compared to the states)

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Wow, that really is mind-boggling. What in the world are these companies thinking?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Whew! If I had to pay $8.70 per gallon, I'd have to quit my job, as just getting here would take about 2/3 of my paycheck!

A few days after Hurricane Katrina the price jumped to $3.29, it's now back down to $2.92.

Queen Creek, AZ(Zone 9a)

As of two days ago, we paid $2.99 per gal. I have a truck that is getting cobwebs on it because we can't afford to drive it. Just to start it up takes about 1/2 a gal. lol Our Mustang gets 28 mpg and thats a little more affordable. Hopefully the prices will come down but I doubt it.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Yeah, funny how fast the prices go up and how slowly they come down.....if they come down.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Arrrrgh!

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

The price was up to 7$/gallon here last week.. When I get a driving license next March I guess we can't afford that much driving anymore, and it makes me sad.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

$2.57 last night. It made a $8.00 difference in a tankfull from the high price a week or so ago. $2.89 was the highest I paid. We are talking a big tank here! One fill was $83.
Suppose it will be back up for Columbus Day ? Seems to top out on a holiday!
Bernie

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

WOW, my most expensive fill-up was $33. At times like this I'm glad to have a relatively efficient car, but even so I'm trying to be more conscious about when, where, and why I'm driving (I guess more for social/environmental/health reasons than money).

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Hah! Just wait until Thanksgiving or Christmas!!!!

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Yeah, funny how prices just happen to go up just before a holiday.

I have a mid-size car that is good on gas, but even so I have carefully planned my routes for years. I even try to plan the time of day for some areas due to traffic issues. Our stop-lights go on forever and that's just more gas.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

I have a 1992 Nissan pickup with the smallest engine ever made. Should be good mileage, and might even be if I lived on flat land. As it is, my tiny engine struggles to get uphill (all there is around here), cutting my gas mileage ridiculously.

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Yeah, darius. Your uphill/downhill is really hard on gas mileage, but where you live has got to be worth it. If it weren't for my kids being here on the sandhills of NC, I would be in the mountains. Love it up there.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yes, I feel it's worth it, just have to be careful about plannng shopping/other trips. I'm 12 miles to a grocery store.

somewhere, PA

well - we're down to $2.839 now. That's down from $3.399 just a week ago.
Tam

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Amazing, GMC just came out with a new Chevy Impala. Has a 330 HP motor & gets 28 miles to the gallon!
Gas milage on cars is apparently regulated by the oil companies.
Anyone remember the VW diesels that got 60+ miles per gallon. They weren't around very long, to good of milage.
Guy I worked with in the sixties invented a carburator & had it installed on a 1 ton ice cream truck. Used LP gas & got over 50 MPG. Tried to register the patend, but got bought out by Standard Oil Co. for $25,000. Gas was a quarter & wages about $2 an hour at that time, so guess what the 25 grand was worth. Never heard of the carb again!
Bernie

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

Why are we not surprised?

Timberlea, NS(Zone 6a)

Geez, Bernie, maybe the "conspiracy theorists" are right; the oil companies DO run the whole dang world! : o

; )

Rhonda

My first new car was a 1982 Toyota Starlit. (Only sold in the US for 3 yrs). It kinda looked like the
Ford Fiesta - seated four and had a hatch w/plenty of room in back. I got 50 MPG on the highway
if I was alone and 45MPG if I had it loaded with four passengers with luggage. It was not safe though -
I sold it when I was in a very low speed accident & the whole front end was squished. I researched its
safety record then and found that it was highly likely that you'd be killed in a 35MPH collision.

The new regulations for required mileage are a joke! its no longer based on weight - but on footprint.
So if a car doesn't meet the mileage requirements, they just make it a bit longer.
Tam

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

They've got us where they want us, don't they? Not much to be done. I've heard that a lot of complaints are being filed against the gas stations and oil companies for gouging. They must have on heck of a lobby going on in halls of government. And when it comes to increased safety built in to cars--the car companies claim that consumers won't pay for it. And all the while they and the oil companies are recording profits through the roof on Wall Street. How dumb do they think we are?

Getting off my soapbox now. Sorry. I'm just tired of being ripped off and then being told it's for my own good. Like, duh!
